cer, an independent soccer league of Latino
players, wants out of the city's penalty box
for a stabbing that occurred at one of its
games in October.
The city revoked the group's permit to
play at Balearic soccer fields after an inves-
tigation into the inC'ldonl.a.nd other serious
violations. Edgar Vdsquez, president of the
league, said the group would like a second
chance.

She may take some classes
next year at OCC to learn to be a
physician's assistant, but she

She does want to have chil-
dren. but the 18-year-old hets
seen too many or her fnends
make the mistake of not waiting
until they're older and more set-
tled.

than 24 hours ago, only yards
from whure she was walking, a
womdn WdS thrown to the groimd
and sexudlly assaulted.
"That is despicable," she said.
"I guess that how:. you, you can

Gwterrez was walking with
her dog, Chavi, on Tu~day morn-
ing near where poltce said the
rape occurred. There are a series
of dirt trdils used primarily by bilc-
ers and Joggers. Although Guiter-
rez walks alone, she trusts her
golden Ldbrador lo fend off any
attackers.
"He Likes to burk a lot, so that
would probably help," she said.
"Whal happened yesterday isn't
gomq to slop me from conung out
here. I will 1usl have my eyes
peeled on anything that moves."
The victim was dragged mto a
thick clump ot grass about 5:30
a .m. Monday when !;he wa~
walking northbound on Placentia
Avenue. The assailant 'Choked her
and then raped her before run-
ning away.
Peggy Toledano, who sits on
the Fairview Park Citizens Advi-
sory Committee, said she always
has her dog by her side when she
goes for her daily walk. She was
stunned when she read m the
newspaper that someone had
been raped in what is con~idcrcd
a relatively safe neighborhood.
HI have never heard of any-
thmg of a comparable nature
since I've lived here,• said the 27-
year resident of Costa Mesa. -nus 1s an awfully safe place to
live. But this type of situation can
happen anywhere at any time.•

shooting as a rerrunder of how
much work still needs to be done in
their neighborhood.

The Shalimar neighborhood in

a cooperative effort by the city,

groups to make the neJghborhood
safer and more Livable. The shoot-

church-sponsored youth centers
and a newly dedicated oty park.
In the face of such progress, the
shooting caused some depression
for neighborhood res1dent Maria
Alvarez, who has worked particu-
