A 14-year-old Costa Mesa High
School student rolls back her
sleeve to reveal the section of her
ann where she carved a boy's name in the
fiesh with a piece of broken glass.
Sharon Hottman, the girl's probation
office, asks her why she did it.
The girl -passive, sweet-faced and
sullen -replies, •1 just felt like doing it, I
don't know. I didn't even tell him I did it."
"I wouldn't have," Hoffman says. "He
probably would have thought you were
psychotic."
At 41, Hoffman is expertly versed in
every variant of adolescent despair, way-
wardness, and delinquency. Every campus
guard in Newport Beach and Cdsta Mesa
knows her name. So do local police.
The girl with the carved arm has a rus.:
tory with LSD and crystal meth and
recently tried to steal her mother's car. She
is one of 70 Newport-Mesa teenagers on
Hoffman's caseload. Anything from
attempted murder to driving while intoxi-
cated can land you there.
Hoffman's job is to monitor those on the
fringes and, if possible, set them back on
the right track. And during her four yea.rs
with the juvenile division of the Orange
County Probation Department, she has
developed a distinctive style.
"I tend to be confrontational,• she says.
•I just try to get kids to think a little bit
more about the ideas they have in their
heads that are kind of twisted. To put a

She seems quite popular."
Hoffman is a small woman who favors
black cowboy boots and heavy sweat-
shirts. She wears a crucifix around her
neck and chews gum through the day. She
carries a walkie-talkie, pepper spray and
handcuffs. She smiles easily.
Most days she works out of her Santa
Ana office. Once or twice a week, in her
blue 1993 Toyota Corolla, she drives
between local high scbools and homes to
check on her charges.
After meeting a series of probationers at
the Costa Mesa campus, she drives to a
nondescript house on Raleigh Avenue to
meet a 17-year-old girl who is five months
pregnant. The girl is a former heroin
addict whose mother died of an overdose.
Hoffman dons a pair of latex gloves and
searches the girl's room. She finds fighters
in the jewelry box and asks why she keeps
them.
"I don't know,• the girl says.
"I want you to get rid of these lighters
for that baby," Hoffman says. "How can I
allow you to get off probation if you're not
going to school and you haven't taken any
baby classes yet?"
The girl takes out a wind-up toy truck
she bought for the baby. She is proud of
the toy. She sends it rolling across the bed.
Hoffman smiles and praises the effort.
She takes a urine sample from the girl -

COSTA MESA -When lead-

Westin South Coast Plaza, they
a.re likely to elect Thomas
Fuentes to a seventh consecutive
term as the party's chairman.
Though there are no other
robust contenders for the seat,
some GOP officials will use the
opportunity to voice their criti-
cisms of Fuentes' leadership.
Gil Ferguson, a former state
assemblyman from Newport

he hopes to dissuade Fuentes
from his involvement in

JUD DENAUT ..
• Pounding the 88s at 81
I ~
HE IS
Staying in tune with his senior cemer
peers.
LOUNGE LIZARD
Jud Denaut looks straight ahead,
plucking the thick strings of his bass while
a roomful at the Qasis senior center sings
"Me and My Shadow."
The 81-year-old doesn't look at the
sheet music on the piano next to him. He
looks more natural playing his bass, which
stands as tall as be does, than he does
when he's standing alone.
He has had his brushes with fame. He
has appeared on record covers and
worked with the likes of Jimmy Durante
and Fred Asta.ire. Actress Rosanna
Arquette is among his six grandchildren.
But in the past five years, he bas found
fame in a new place: the Oasis senior cen-
ter in Corona del Mar. He plays the piano
in the center's lounge every day and plays
. the bass for the center's weekly sing-a-
longs.
"We call him our lounge ~ard," Oasis
president Norma Gilchrist says.
Denaut recently began making rounds
with Gilchrist to local convalescent homes,
where he plays old tunes for patients.
"You don't hear that music anymore,• he
says.
MUSIC IN HIS BLOOD
Denaut got his staJ1 in music as a
teenager living in Indiana. His aunt and
uncle, both professional musicians, need-
ed a bass player for theit band.
Then 16 and well-versed in the piano,
Denaut set to learning to play the bass.
After just three weeks, he had mastered
the instrument and went on the road with
the band.
He stayed with the music business,
even during World War U, when he played
with the Armed Forces Radio Service
orchestra.
He cites his 14 years as a music director
at Disneyland as the highlight of his
career. There he arranged, conducted and
played bass and formed orchestras for
concerts led by band leaders such as Ben-
ny Goodman and Cab Calloway.
He and his wife of 61 years, Maxine,
now live on Balboa Island.
MULTI-TALENTED
He also painted several years ago, but
he doesn't show too much pride in his
work. l\vo of his paintings, softly colored
street scenes, hang in Gilchhrist's office.
"He never signed any of them,•
Gilchrist says.
"It wasn't that good. baby,• he shoots
back.
Denaut continues his self-deprecating
ways in each of their exchanges.
Gilchrist raves, •Everyone here just
loves him. We don't know what we'd do
without him.•
H e responds sarcastically, •stop, you're
gonna make me cry."
But when he talks about his musical tal-
ent his humble habits change.
"Any run-of-the-mill genius can do it,•
he says with a smile.

LOSING THAT
OLD SPARK
According to tests, mistimed
Ignition and Improperly gapped or
defective spark plugs cause a
significant decrease in automobile
fuel efficiency. Tests conducted In
automotive laboratories indicate
that the loss In fuel economy
resulting from out-of-specification
tune-up factors, such as worn spark
plu_gs and Incorrect __timing
adjustments, range from 9% to
12%. It should be noted that~
tests were conducted with 6-and 8-
cyllnder engines. Fuel efficiency
losses due to worn plugs and bad
timing In 4-cytinder engines Is even
greater (14% to 25%) due to the
fact that a bad s park plug in a
smaller engine wastes a greater
peroentage of fuel than one In a
larger engine. These differences
aside, the clear conclusion Is that
maximum fuel economy can be
attained by keeping the timing set
to specification and keeping the
spark plugs In top-notch condition.
HI~ Fuel economy declines long
before a car begins to show a
reduction In pelformance.
A MATTER OF
TIMING BELT OR
CHAIN
A rough Idle may stem from
damage to the tlmlng belt or chain,
which may show symptoms of an
unusual slapplng or metallic noise.
This noise from Inside the timing
belt or chain cover usually means
that a loose chain or belt Is s!applng
against the cover. The result Is an
alteration In valve timing, which
causes the engine to Idle roughly. A
problem with the timing belt or
chain can alao be Identified with the
use of a timing llght aimed at the
timing pulley. If the timing martcs
appear to jump around, the chain or
belt Is likely bad. The solution to this
problem usually rests with the
replacement of the belt or chain.
In any case, manufacturers
recommend that timing pelts be

Estancia High's

keeping up with the
'90%' factor, much to
the liking of their

Sorce, in his second year as

has guided his charges.to a 15-2
overall, 2-0 Pacific Coast League
start. Last season's squad went
18-2 on the way to a tie for the
PCL crown with Laguna Hills.
That's a winning percentage just
·a tad shy of 90%.
The team's start is all the more
remarkable when you realize the

games .all of last season.

• tnvading Biola tags
Southern California
College with a 64-53
defeat, dropping the
Vanguards to 13-6.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
COSTA tvfESA-It was a tough
week for the Southern Calif omia
College men's basketball team
which dropped a two-point deci-
sion at Azusa Pacific Tuesday and
then fell again Saturday, 64-53, to
visiting Biola .
"I was hoping to be better than
0-2, • said SCC Coach Bill
Reynolds of bis team's start in
Golden State Athletic Conference
play .
"But there's not a weak sister
in the GSAC, • he said. "There
are no gimmes. We have to play
harder and shoot more efficiently.
"Of course, neither team was
shooting really well and I'd like to
attribute that to the defense.•
The Vanguards ( 13-6 overall)
shot only 40% from the floor, con-
necting on 21 of 53 attempts. Bio·
la (16-1 overall, 2-0 in the GS.AC)
bit the shots when it needed to,
but the Eagles were only 46%
from the floor (26 of 56). Both
teams were 4 of 13 from three-
point land.
"We missed some easy shots in
key spots,• Reynolds said. "We
self-destructed in a few ways, but
that was in part to their defense.•
In a low-scoring, but very
physical first half, the two teams
were tied 12-12 with 8:02 left. sec managed Qnly two free
throws over the next 5 1/2 min·
utes as Biola opened a 20-14 lead.
-BILL REYNOLDS • Adam pzierzynski scored
layup and completed a three-
point play at 2:31 to end the
drought and cut the lead to three.
Ozierzynski, who led all scorers
with 22 points, had a three-point
attempt lip out at the buzzer as
Biola went in up 24-20 at the half.
The Vanguards pulled to with-
in 25-24 on a Rod Scheuerman
jumper just three minutes into the
second half, but Biola broke away
with a 14-2 run to open a 42-26
lead with 13:15 left. John Flo-
rance, who scored -19 points for
Biola, had three treys in the run.
The Vanguards chipped away
at the lead, cutting the margin
back to seven, 51-44, on a
Ozierzynski steal· and layup at
6:16, but Biola shut the door with
a 10-0 run.
"The game with Azusa was
pretty tough and it seemed like
we lost a little emotion (Satur·
day),• Reynolds said. "I think we
played hard, but we just don't
have much to show for it.•

instead finds itself on top of the

Following Saturday's uninspir·

but with 3:42 left Biola (1-15 over-

the game, trailing 50-44.
Alana Kempton, who scored a
