COSTA ?v1ESA -Some resi-
dents say they are against the
city's plan to install fencing
around the concrete pillars
placed in the area to reduce
crime.
Resident Maria Alvarez spoke
at Monday's City Council meet-
ing expressing concerns that the
plan would be a hardship on
those who live there.
•1 have 160 signatures of l'esi-
~ents who do not support this,•
she said through an interpreter,
who translated for her and Maria
Rubalcava who also spoke on the
subject. •Thank you for the
thought, but City Council needs
to work with us on problems fac-
ing the community."
Both Alvarez and Rubalcava
said the estimated $8,500 to
install iron fencing and $25,000 to
remove trees could be better
spent on after-school programs
for Children and child care assis-
tance.
The two women were among
about 30 residents who attended
tlie meeting because they felt the
city's efforts to combat crime in
their neighborhood are too
severe. Residents say the fencing
would bqx them in and that cut-
ting the trees would take away
their shade and ruin what little
aesthetics the community has.
The money for the fencing and
the tree removal would come
from Community Development
Block Grant funds. Additionally,
anotiier $17 ,000 in funds would
pay for resurfacing the city-
owned alleyways behind the
Vl.Sta Center Complex.
Lt Alan Kent likened Shalimar
Drive to a dark dungeon that sti-
fles police patrol's efforts to com-
bat crime.
The Police Department's
request to install iron fencing
around the concrete pillars that
already block streets from
through traffic confused residents
and council members. Residents
worried tbe plan would make

too late?
• City officials missed
their chance to object to
plan that will divide Costa
Mesa into two area codes,
say state agency leaders.
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Although
city officials object to a plan to
split the city's area code into both
1-.and 949, their actions may be
too lttle, too late.
Costa Mesa is one of four
Or8le County cities the Califor-
nia -,>\iblic Utilities Commission is
looking to split between two area
codel on Oct. 17. A final decision .
~ 'P made later this month.
OD Monday, City Council
messat>ers will ask the commission
to allow the city to either retain its
71.( fl,88 code, or replace it tom-
pl with 949.
But its efforts come almost two
months after the telecommunica-
tions industry held its meetings in
E lm to discuss boundary
officials at the California
dministration said.
•(Costa Mesa city officials)
were not there to represent them-
selves," said H. Douglas Hescox,
a spokesman for the California
Code Administration, the state
agency charged with holding
bearings on area code changes.
"They could have elected anyone
in the city and they didn't send
anyone. They only decide to par-
ticipate after they don't like the
outcome.·
Mayor Peter Buffa says the city
sent a fax on Nov. 14 that
expressed its preferences, but at
the meeting a fiftb choice was
approved by a vote of 11-2.
Hescox noted that the city's
letter was invalid as the rules
clearly stated voting entities must
be present at the meeting.
"They might have been able
to sway some other cities,· Hes-·
cox said. "You don't know what
would have happened if they had
come."
City officials believed, incor-
rectly it appears, the fax would
count as a vote.

communications director. •They

Don't cry for Newt,
Mt. Rohrabacher
I have always watched with
in~~ when the Daily Pilot
solicits opinions from its read-
ers on questions of public policy'
-especially if they involve poli-tics.
So naturally I was intrigued by
the response to the most recent
question regarding the support of
our local congressmen for the
retention of Newt Gingrich as
speaker of the House of Repre-
sentatives.
Since I'm also an avid reader of ·
the Pilot, I ~ould like to respond
to the same invitation.
My reaction breaks down into
two distinct parts: (1) the deep
feelings expressed by Congress-
man Dana Rohrabacber in this
matter; and (2) whether or not the
re-election of Gingrich serves the
best interests of the Republican
Party, always of deep concern to
me.
I found Rohrabacher's com-·
ments about Gingrich on CNN's
"Crossfire" downright heart-
wannirig. Titls congressman, who
has never been observed weep-
ing over the plight of the have-
nots in our society, admitted the
humility expressed by Gingrich in
his acceptance speech •almost
brought a tear to my eye. He is
the ultimate gentleman."
Dana also said: "The savagery
with which Newt was attacked·
was mind-boggling. Newt made
' minor paperwork mistakes. That
could happen to anyone .... Most
of us .were strengthened when we
saw that our friend and hero was
being attacked.•
Former House Speaker Jim
Wright would be interested in
Dana's choice of words. The cur-
rent "savagery" is a walk in the
park compared to Gingrich's
a~cks that drove Wright out of
office for essentially the same
"minor paperwork mistakes• -
except that Wright profited by a
few hundred dollars, while Gin-
grich picked up some cool mil-
lions. And calling Gingrich "the
ultimate gentleman" is like refer-
ring to Forrest Gump as a brilliant
conversationalist.
Thus we must conclude Con-
gressman Rohrabacher either has
a remarkably sophisticated and
sly sense of humor, is a lousy
judge of character, or isn't very
bright Only the first option
should be acceptable to his con-
stituents, and that might well be a
question the Pilot should offer
next to its readers. Do you think
Dana Robrabacher has a sense of
humor? •
The impact of the votes by
Congressman Christopher Cox
and Rohrabacher for Gingrich is a
whole different matter. At the risk
of being accused of giving advice
to the GOP again, it is my convic-
tion that the Republicans would
have been far better served by
removing Gingrich. And I think
that will become quite clear in the
weeks ahead.
The details of the charges
against him aren't in yet. When
they are made public, he might
very well look.like an even worse
choice than he was before the
charges came up. U the Republi-
cans who voted for him had read
any polls or listened to any politi-
cal drumbeats over the past year,
they should have known that
Gingrich is an albatross around

the neck of the party. Now, by re-
electing him before -the Ethics
Committee report gave them a
legitimate reason for dumping
him, they're stuck with Newt.
As political analyst Robert
Beckel said th~ other day in the
Times: •After the '94 election,
Gingrich knew be was holding
aces and could bet the ranch. But
it's '97 now, and he, better than
anyone, knows he's holding
deuces. And in the world of high-
stakes Washington politics,
deuces ain't gonna rut it."
The other reason the Republi-
cans aren't well-served by return-
ing Gingrich as speaker is the
diluting impact it will have on
their attacks on the personal
problems of President Clinton.
Gingrich will serye as a lightning
rod deflecting the heat from the
president. Taking the moral high
road becomes considerably more
difficult when the Republican,
only thrice-removed from the
presidency, bas been fined and
reprimanded by a 7-1 vote of. a bi-
partisan committee of his peeIS.
Cox made no public statement
regarding his vote for Gingrich
that I could discover, which is one
large reason for his almost sacro-
sanct position among Orange
County congressmen. In a seat
once held by James Utt and with .
associates like Rohrabacher and
Robert Doman, it is possible to .
look statesmanlike --even when
you follow the same hard right
line -simply by keeping your
mouth shut most of the time and
not shouting when you do speak.
Cox does both of these things
extremely well.
So it comes to this. As a
Democr~t. I applaud the votes of
my congressional representatives
for Newt Gingrich -as long as
Clinton and Al Gore don't ever fty
in the same plane. And if I was a
Republican, I'd be mad as hell at
them for putting this straw man
back on the podium.
Meanwhile, Cox and
Rohrabacher -who admire
Newt so lavishly -might want to
study that portion of his accep-
tance speech in which he said: "U
those who are conservative say
that bureaucracy and compulsion
is not the answer, then what are
we going to say to a child born in
a poor neighborhood with a bro-
ken home and no one to help
them rise?"
Now there's something to
weep about, Dana.

Weman 's injuries
caused by slip in rain
An 80-year-old woman who
was found unconscious by the
side of the road Monday in Cos-
ta Mesa appears not to have
been struck by a car and aban;
doned, as authorities originally
suspected.
Mary Danziger, a Pennsylva-
nia woman visiting the city,
apparently slipped in the rain
and fell near Arbor Street and
Monrovia Avenue around 6:35
p.m . Monday, said Costa Mesa
police Sgt. George Yezbick.
Paramedics rushed Danzi~er
to Hoag Memorial Hospital
Presbyterian with a broken arm
after a Good Samaritan found
her, Yezbick said .
The confusion arose when a
doctor said her injuries were too
severe to have been caused by a
fall, and police announced they
were searching for the car that
appeared to have struck her.
But Danziger cleared the
record when she regained con-
sciousness.
#She got caught in the rain so
she figured she'd hustle, and
she slipped and fell and broke
her arm," Yezbick said. ·we
didn't know that until she woke
up."
Danziger also suffered contu-
sions to the right side of her face
and her bead, hip and hands.
She was upgraded from serious
to fair condition Tuesday, a hos-
pital spokesperson said.

Eric Woods ready to take

Friday at Newport Beach CC.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
Eric Woods, once as popular
in Canada as maple syrup,
couldn't stick an entire
weekend at any one stop on the
Canadian Tour last year.
"I was a mess," Woods said.
"It was a miracle breaking 80."
Woods, a two-time Order of
Merit cham}>ion on the
Canadian Tour, missed one cut
in three years, but last year
Woods failed to make a single
cut in seven tournaments.
Now,aftera lwilil)bling
experience, Wooftas a fresh
outlook on golf and is ready for
a big year in 1997.
"I think I've made more
money this year playing golf
than all of last year," said
Woods, who won a Golden State
mini tour event Jan. 13 at
Brookside Golf Course in
Pasadena, pocketing $580.
Woods, a former Corona del
Mar High quarterback who still
shares the school record for
touchdown passes in a season
(12), will be among 74 pros
competing for a piece of the
$100,000 purse Friday and
Saturday in the 23rd annual
Taco Bell Newport Classic
Pro-Am at Newport Beach
Country Club.
For Woods, playing on a
sponsor invitation, it will be his
fourth Newport Classic in six
years. He won the pro-am title
in 1991 with Jim Whitaker, one
of only two back-to-back
amateur winners in Newport
Classic history.
Woods, a pro since 1988, was
the Canadian Tour's leading
money winner in 1993 and '94.
He was also the South America
Tour's leading money winner in
1992, his first of three stints
under the equator.
Woods' career was rattled
when his father, longtime NBCC
member Dick Woods, became ill.
He fell to 44th on the Canadian
Tour money list in 1995, then
didn't earn a dime last year.
But his comeback has already
begun for 1997. "To be honest,
I'm excited about this year," said
Woods, who has been working
on his swing with Kip
Puterbaugh out of Carlsbad.
"I'm playing Golden State
• tours right now to help me find
out where l stand," added
Woods, exempt on both the
Cana(llan and South America
tours because of his past
triumphs.
Woods became heavily
involved in the family business,
Cactus Packaging in Corona del
Mar, after his father's illness,
essent1ally taking it over while
putting his golf career on hold.
•1 spent most of the money I
earned in goU on my lifestyle,•
Woods said. "I have nothing to
show for it except a great time.
But I'm in the work mode now,
and I look at golf differently. I
enjoy the concept of playing
professional golf, but I don't
need to hit every party."

• Newport Harbor pwrishes Irvine

Coach Dukus happy in every facet.
By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Following Tuesday's
girls basketball game with Irvine, Newport
Harbor Hi_gh cpach Bob Dukus couldn't find
a thing to complain about.
·we're really right where we need to be,.
Dukus said after his Sailors pulled 11way to a
65-38 victory to run their Sea View League
record to 3-1 (12-8 overall).
MWe've really been focused since the
Woodbridge game," Dukus said. •w e're run-
" ning the floor, passing well. Tm really .enjoy-
ing watching them play.•
Irvine was in ~the game for the first two
possessions, tying the game at 2-2 in the ear-
ly going, but the Sailors went on a 16-0 run to
put the.game away early.
M.E. Clayton and Breanna Badorek both
scored six points during the run. Clayton fin-
ished with a game-high 20 points while
pulling down seven rebounds. Badorek
added 13 points and six boards.
Irvine's only offensive threat in the half,
Myra Hardeman, scored 11 of the Vaqueros'
12 points before heading to the bench with
her fourth foul at the 2:05 mark. Newport
opened a 35-12 lead by intennission and
coasted the rest of ~e way.
MWe did everything we needed to do to
win tonight," Dukus said. MWhen we went to
a zone, we didn't give them any breathing
space at all."
Irvine shot a woeful 34 % from lhe floor for
the game while throwing up enough bricks to
build an annex to the Newport gym.
Every time Irvine see~ poised to get
into an offensive rhythm, Clayton was there
to put in a big bucket.
MM.E. made some clutch shoes," Dukus
said. MI know it sounds funny to say clutch
when we were so far ahead, but she was
making the shots when they were trying to
put something together. It stopped them
cold .·

•Bl Toro's two·g9Al lead too mudl
to overcome in Sea View decision.
I LAJ<E PORBST -Coron.a del Mar High
girls soccer coach Matt Etcllilon looked oaoss
the El Toro High field Tuesday and saw the
lea.JD his Sea King• might become. And,
despite a 2-0 Sea Vlew League loss to the bott
ChArgen, the seven freshmen and one sopbo-
Jnore on the CdM roster saw plenty in the sec-
ond half to help them believe their coach's
vision may soon become a reality.
"We gave the girls three basic instructions
at ha.lttlme, and they came out in the second
half and executed,• said Etchison, whose
youthful squad played the perennially strong
hosts (10-5-4, 2-0-2 in league and ranked
nJnth in Orange County) virtually even the
final 40 minutes. "lt was 0-0 in the second
hall.·
The Sea Kings, however, appeared inti.mi·
dated at the outset, as El Toro thoroughly
dominated the opening halt to protect its
unbeaten league record.
"l talked with ow girls about my concerns
we'd come out fiat, having had a big win over
Newport Harbor (Jan. 16), ~ Etchison said.
"But it took us a while to get sorted out."
Compounding the early struggles for the
Sea Kings, was an efficient and experienced
offensive attack for the hosts, who opened the
scoring fu the 13th minute on funior Me lissa
Dippel's lob shot inside the far back comer.
El Toro, working one-touch passes past
some listless CdM defenders, doubled the
margin in the 32nd minute, when sophomore
Laura Davis one-timed Jamie Doddridge's
superior leave near the left comer to give
CdM goalie Heather Hritz no chance.
ff Obviously, we could have had QlOre inten-
sity. H Etchison said of the opening half. "El
f
Toro is a very organized team and it took
advantage. ffhe Chargers) were young like
we were last year. But they're more experi-
enced now and they showed it."
Though El Toro only has three seniors to
CdM's four, the Charger roster is predomi·
nantly comprised of juniors, with only five
sophomores and no fTeshmen.
"We're young this year, like they were last
year," said Etchison, whose team fell to 7-8-2,
1-2-1.
at El Toro
Hritz finished wi1b five saves, all in the first
half, while El Toro keeper Melody Oerloshon
made the first of her three saves just before
the halftime whistle.
CdM seniors Faith Micliler and Kara Will-
geroth, as well as juniors Jordana Havriluk
and Lindsey Grubbs and freshman Julia Liv-
ingston all created quality scoring chances.
Senior Heather Marshall, Havriluk and
Grubbs also displayed aggressiveness and
skill handling and winning the ball for CdM.
