Daily Pilot ·schools
Grades, honors shouldn't outweigh jay of learning
have read the letters m the Pilot
regarding the proJ)OSals to keep
or change the way we honor
aduating seniors. Should one
n be chosen as valedictorian,
r should an appropriate title be
·ven to the school's top echelon?
What if two seniors have all A's,
duding the same nwnber or
onors and Advanced Placement
m:L~:?S? What if the only difference
tween the course load of the two
tudents is that one student too~
ore classes, perhdps in music,
, or journalism? Which SWdent .
hould be ehosen as Valedictorian?
Under our present system, the
tudenl who took fewer classes
ould be our c:hosen one. Also, a
tudent who took honors classes as
freshman and sophomore would
eceive no more credit for those
sses than the student who dJd ,..
ot.
I have read the <lndlogies to
oot races and f09tball gdilles. I'm
ot sure that we should be com-.
· g four years of rigorous acad-
·c work to a minute·long race.
'm even more troubled by, the
mphasls our society is placing on
ades as opposed to learning.
I'm taking classes at Orange
oast College, where one of my
smates, a graduate of UCLA, is
· g to get into medical school.
any med schools have a 3.5 GPA

So, when we make decisions
about who should be honored for
academic excellence, or who
should receive the golden ticket
into a prestigious college or med·
icdl school. I hope the emphasis
we place on grades, or having one
declared winner (i.e., the vciledic·
torian) doesn't distract students
from the ultimate goal of learning.
The cartoon strip "Zits" recent·
ly has been making light of the
issue, wher~ ~ student with a high
GPA tells Jeremy that he can just
buy a term paper off the Internet.
When I g~ to a doctor, l don't
want to think that she sabotaged
fellow students by taking their
notes, or manipulated her class
schedule to be the valedictorian. I
don't want to think that she took
shortcuts m her classes for the sake
of a high grade-point average.
I want someone who really
cares about what I am saying and
treats me like a hwnan being
UlStead of a problem to solve. I
want a doctor who' won't alter my
medical records or the results of a

medical trlal U she thinks it will get
her ahead.·
I want someone wbo wants to
learn for learning's sake, so she
will keep up with medical
advances once she has obtained
her license. I would rather have
someone with compassion over a
class valedictorian who got there'
by hook or by croo~.... · '
So, when our couununity
decides some of th~ issues with
regard to honors classes and acad·
emic awards, let's think abOut the
message we send about the joy 9f
learning. Let's make sure our poli·
cies encourage them to learn at
the highest lev~ that our students
can.

-'I missed some of the school
boa.rd meeting last Tuesday to
attend Newport Harbor High's
Acadenues Night. It was really
enlightening, and I will report on it
soon.
I did meet Norman Wolle, who
is the PTA President of ~bluff
School, which will reopen in Sep.
tember. He said the school is K-6
with a proposed enrollment of 290
students. They already have 120
parents involved, as well as other
volunteers. That is what I call a
committed community.
Eastbluff School was on the
agenda for another reason. The
renovation costs projected by the
architect 90 days ago were $3.4
million .. But COilStruction costs have
gone up exponentially lately, and
may increase as much as 28%·.
I guess I missed the meeting
with the renovation plans, because
as I figure it. at $3.4 million, that
works out to $11,724.00 a student
just to get the doors open. •
By comparison, Davis School,
which houses 657 students, cost
$1.5 million. Rea School. which
houses 421 students, cost $2.4 mil··

Eastbluff School•is being reno·

from the Bonita f'.anyon project.
1bat money, by law, must be used
on the students from that property.
So, it was origtna.lly planned that
Newport Coast School w.ould get
$1 million, Eastbluff would cost
about $3.4 million, and the leftover
$1.6 million would go to Corona

be used for any district project
re!ated to district growth. One
boa.rd member noted that although
some items on the list, such as car·
peting, are absolutely necessary,
maybe other items could wait.
Her concern was that the New·
port Harbor zone needs to open up
Monte Vista School, but if the Ford
Loral money, which should total
$2.4 million, is used for Cd.M's list,
there will be no funds.
It appears to be a valid con-
cern. Heck. I didn't even know
that crupeting was absolutely nee·
essary for sCbools. Apparently, this
issue will be. back in two weeks, so
we'll see if the priorily to open up
a school in the Newport Harbor

football from the early days was
halfback Mel Smalley, a rugged

1948-50.
He only played two minutes
in '48, according to sportswriter
Roel MacMillian, but he went on
to become first string in '49, and,
in time, developed into the
· third-highest scorer in Newport
history. He scored 104 points in
'49, and 30 points in ·so, the
dropoff attributed to injuries.
Few ever knew how much
pain Smalley endured in both
the seasons of 1948 and '49.
One of h1s guttiest
perlormances was m '49 against
Orange, a game Newport won,
41-12.
Orange outweighed Newport
by 30 pounds a man and it kept
tremendous physical pressure on
Smalley ·
In fact, defenders managed to
give him a severe bashlng in the
mouth. We went to the dentisJ
for oral surgery. Sadly, he
suffered Wlth dental problems
for years, despite the repairs.
Even more remarkable was
the fact that Smalley only had

He could out-tox them\ln pass

During his va.rsity grid career,

COSTA MESA -On Feb. 17,
the Orange Coast College
women's basketball team lost a
heartbreaker to Or{lllge Empire
Conference doormat Golden
West, 61-59, bringing about the
realization it was really time to
address the. problems created by
the loss of sophomore starters
Natalie Weeks and. Ani Saraydar-
ian. In essence, without Weeks, a
6-3 center, and Saraydartan, one
of the Pirates' biggest offensive
threats, Orange Coast had to
work on becoming a whole new
team for the playoffs.
L.A. Trade Teclr became the
first playoff victim of the new-look
Pirates Satutday night when host
Orange Coast. behind a career-
bigh 25 points from Sarah Mid-
dlebrooke, rolled to an 67-47 win
COMMUllTY COLLEll HOOPS ' ••
in the opening round of the

•l'his is a completely d.itt~ent

said. ~After the loss to Golden
West, we really turned it around
and found a new way to 'Win. The
upset win over Irvine Valley to
finish conference was a big confi-
dence boost and WA know we can
still beat good teams."
The Techsters (14-14) have had
t,heir own problems this season
with losing .e_layers and were only
able to suit up seven for the ga,me.
With 2:51 left, Trade Tech had its
third player foul out, leaving just
four players on the floor.
The Pirates (26-6). who travel
to No. 7-seeded Santa Barbafa
Wednesday for the second round,
jumped out to a 21-point lead
before cruising into halftime and
letting the Techsters re-enter
striking distance.
But Orange Coast erased any
hope quickly in the second half,
continually building its ead
throughout.
Middlebrooke, 11 of 17 from
the field, also had 12 rebounds.
Freshman guard Erin Tomlin.:
son scored 13 potnts with seven
boards for the Pirates. Michelle
Klytta, n product of Newport Har-
bor High, bit a trio of three-point-
ers in the second hall and finished
with 12 points.
Leah Wilde had 11 points for occ. . .
The victory, which brings the
Pirates to within a game of the
single-season victory record set
during the 1992-1993 season, sets
up a rematch with Santa Barbara,
which fost to OCC, 86-73, Dec. 2.
But that was with Weeks and
Saraydarian still in the lineup.
SWl, Thornton likes their
chances. •Everybody is playing
well," Thornton said. "And we
learned one key thing -. we don't
have to shoot 'the lights out to be
effective. We only shot 33 % to
