Man g11nned down in brawl
• Morning incident near McFadden square leaves one
man dead and another stabbed.
By Christopher Goffard, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Police
are still struggling to unearth the
details surrounding a fight in a
McFadden Square home Thurs-
day morning that left one New-
port Beach man shot to death
a.µd another seriously stabbed.
Around 10:15 a.m. two men
knocked on the door of 218 21st
Street and confronted the resi-
dent, 26-year-old John Edward
Pavese, authorities said.
A fight ensued, and Pavese
shot one of the men -Ryan
Calvin Kerr, 25, of Newport
Beach -twice in the upper torso
with a .25 caliber semiautomatic
handgun, said Newport Beach
police Sgt. John Desmond.
Other b~ flew wild. one of
them sbattermg the window of a
van parked across the street. The
fight left Pavese with a stab
wound to the torso. He under-
went surgery at UCI Medical
Center in Orange, where he was
listed in guarded condition late
Thursday.
Kerr died at 11 :37 a.m. at
Western Medical Center in Santa
Ana. Police are interviewing the
man who was with Kerr at the
scene but have not released his
name. .
The events leading up to the
attack and the motivation for it
remain a puzzle, but witnesses
painted a vivid picture of its
aftermath.
After being struck by the bul-
lets, Kerr stumbled down 21st
Street while his partner tried to
hold him upright. Witnesses said
Kerr fell on bis face a number of
times as the pair aossed Balboa
Boulevard toward McFadden
Squale. Kerr finally collapsed in
front of Baja Sharkeez Restaurant.
His partner abandoned him,
fleeing in a car that had been
parked in the Square's lot.
Despite a countyw'ide manhunt,
he evaded police for most of the
day. But around 5:30 p.m. a man
claiming to be the fugitive
walked into the police station to
surrender himself.
"Apparently he just showed
up," Desmond said.
Pavese's housemate, Robert
McFarland, 27, was in the house
when the attack occurred. He
said he saw the approaching
men "bl'eeZe by a window in the
side yard" but added, "I didn't
get a good look at them."
McFarland said he fled

knocked again. He said 'Come

silence followed by •a tackling
sound, things falling, commo-

gunfire, McFarland said.
McFarland said he heard
three more gunshots as he fled.

What about "the real

with Walter Brennan. In the
1880s, trail bosses were some-

There was an annual cattle
drive from Abilene to Texas that
cani.ed a large cash prize. The
Michael Jordan of trail bosses
was a man named Joseph
McCoy. One year, as the crowd
waited patiently at the finish
line, a great cheer went up as a
herd appeared on the horizon.
A rider charged out to see
who the apparent winner was
and r;etumed, shouting, "It's
McCoy!" A raucous celebration
ensued But some became suspi-
cious. Even for McCoy, this was
an incredible victory. Soon, a

distance. Again. the rider
charged out to meet them.
Again, he retmned.

What about "Hail to the

origins that reach back to Wash-

President James Polle (1845-
1849) holds one distinction
among U.S. presidents. He was
the shortest by far - 5 feet
nothing and that was probably
cheating. On more than one
occasion, the president and his
wife would enter a crowded

see them.
. This displeased Mrs. Polk
greatly and she came up with a
clever solution.
One hundred and fifty years

even though it was written
because James Polle was too
short to be seen.

The children and staff of
Orange Coast College's Child
Care Center will have to wait an
extra semester to move into their
new child care facility than.ks to
delayed construction work.
The new child care center,
which costs $2.2 million, was sup-
posed to be built by Dec. 27 yet
recent rains and scheduling con-
flicts by Garr Construction has
delayed the completion date by
four months. The new completion
date is April 25.
•They are more than two
months beyond schedule,· said
Gene Farrell, vice chancellor of
Administrative Services for Coast
Community College District.
"This is a larger project than (the
contractor) has done before. They
.have had a hard time getting the
job done."
Farrell added the construction
crew is building an impressive
and detailed facility, but the delay
is an inconvenience for the staff at
the old child care center.
"It is effecting the Child Care
Center because they are badly in
need of better facility conditions,"
he said.

works at R&R Tobacco in Santa

said the basketball star was defi-

With that encouragement, I
tried the Cheesecake Factory
across the way in Newport Cen-
ter. A source, who wished to
remain anonymous, said Rod-
man had once come in and
almost left because he didn't
want to wait for a table. He
stayed at the urging of his girl-
friend, and had a Bud Ught with
a slice of cheesecake, the source
said.
I was then relegated to trying

had ever seen him.
Then came the last stop,

was closed by late afternoon.
Just when I was sure I'd failed

Thus Top of Nails became the

ULLMAN
UPTO
HIS OLD
TRICKS
Newport Beach's Dave
Ullman appears to be on
his way to Melges honors
at Key West Race Week.
W ith only one day left of
Key West Race Week,
Newport Beach's Dave
Ullman looks to gain himself
another title. The defending
champion of the Melges fleet.
Ullman and crew leads the pack
by five points, just ahead of San
Diego sailor Vtnce Brun.
Ullman leads the 48-boat fleet
with scores of 2, 1, 2, 9, 5, giving
him 18.75 points for the series.
Sporting the biggest class at
Key West, this year's Melges
fleet has been deemed as
extremely competitive and
almost dead-even in talent.
The talent factor has been
further highlighted by the fact
that pro Ken Legler, coach of
national champion Tufts
University, continues to set an
incredibly even course.
Throughout the series, there has
really not been a favored side on
the Division m circle, ma.king
this race a definite test of skill
and boat speed.
This type of course has been
perfect for Ullman, who is
known for his incredible boat
speed. Course length has also
played a big factor, with the
longest course being six legs and
12.4 miles long. Conditions have
been steady as well, with 12-15
knots from the southeast and
moderate chop prevailing.
Other local boats include
Jaime Malm in 12th (19, 7, 26,
11, 14), Dennis Shannon and
Steve Otto in 19th (35, 31, 8, 15,
11) and Bruce Ayres tied for 20th
(45, 9, 23, 14, 12).

Crosby had a vision in the ear-

for professional golfers who didn't
make the cut at the tournament
known today as the AT&T Pebble

By 1975, the Crosby Southern
Clambake was born. Little did the
icon of entertainment know it
would someday grow up to
become the biggest mini tour
event in Southern California with
a $100,000 purse and a Mexican
fast-food chain as its title sponsor.
The Taco Bell Newport Classic

at Newport Beach Country Club
for the 23rd consecutive year, has
changed in name and
stature, but the primary
goal remains intact: To

For the second year
in a row, Newport Clas-
sic officials invited
LPGA pros, beaded by
Cathy Mockett (New-
port Harbor High).
Mockett was the first
woman pro to play in
the event in 1995. "In some cases,"
pro-am chairman Jake Rohrer
said, "the players have been on
the PGA Tour and they're trying
to get back, and other times
they're just starting to climb up
the ladder."
Tom Lehman, the PGA Tour's
Player of the Year last year,
played in the Newport Classic
when he was climbing the ladder,
the last time in 1991.
Steve Jones, last year's U.S.
Open winner, Payne Stewart,
Peter Jacobsen and Fuzzy Zoeller
all rubbed elbows here with ama-
teurs and sponsors before gaining
fame in golf.
This year's Newport Classic is
scheduled to begin today at 1
a.m. with the first tee time.
Seventy-four pro-am teams
will play in the event to raise
funds for Hoag Hospital In the
previous 22 years, $2.1 million
has been raised from the tourna-
ment, including over $1 million
the past four years since Taco Bell
has been the title sponsor.
Last year's donation of

• Kim Saiki, Mockett,
Pearl Sinn and Muffin Spencer-
Devlin are scheduled to play.
Jeff Hart, a PGA Tour player, is
the only golfer (pro or amateur) to
win three Newport Classic pro-
am team titles. He's also the two-
time defending pro-am champ,
having won with Charlie Rogers
in '95 and Rick Godber last year.
"It's a very unusual tourna-
ment, there's not any other like
it," said Karen Whitaker, player
relations chairman. "With both
men and women involved, it
brings in another aspect."
In addition to Mockett, other
local pros competing include Este-·
ban Toledo (Costa Mesa), Eric
Woods (Corona del Mar), Dennis
Paulson ·(Costa Mesa High) and
Kelly Manos (Costa Mesa).
Manos is an assistant pro at
Big Canyon Country Club. Toledo
is fully exempt this year on the
Nike Tour.
Fans are invited to soak in the
action today and Saturday with
free admission both days. The
wooded, par-71 golf course plays
at just under 6,600 yards.

Balboa couple collect antique
water droppers, used t;o create ink
in Asian colUltries
Before ballpoint pens, mark-
ers and pendls, people
mixed their own ink and
marked fibrous materials with
laborious strokes of a brush.
Dry ink was mixed with water
to produce a dark liquid suitable
for writing and painting. In Asian
countries, ornate water droppers
were used to get Ole correct
amount of water to mix with the
ink.
Bob and Jane Lewis of Balboa
Island have a collection of the
droppers that were made and
used in Korea, China and Japan.
The couple have been collect-
ing the functional and decora-
tive droppers for 25 years, and

STILL LIFE·GUARDS
Local artist hangs out on 'Baywatch' set to paint
commissioned portrait of show's director
By Nancy Cheever, Dai/}' Pilot
Fine art and babes in swim-
suits are not normally a rec-
ognizable match. But for
Balboa lslaod artist Debra Huse,
the combination works perfectly.
The blond, petite painter was
recently commissioned to do a
large pastel painting of Greg
Bonann, the co-creator and
director of the internatioll4lly
popular television show •eay-
watch."
For three days in November,
Huse perused the "Baywatcb •
set to find the right images for
her painting. Wtth camera in
hand, she was allowed to roam
freely and photograph the actors,
the crew and the director.
•1 bied to stay out of the way
without bugging anyone,• she
said. ·u was really fun. Everyone
was really nice.•
Filmed mostly in Malibu at the
real •Baywatcb" lifeguard head-
quarters, the program -which
features extraordinarily good.-
looking and athletic actors with
the sandy beach backdrop -
was created by Bonano. who
spent most of bis life at the beach
and still lifeguards about once a
month for fun, Huse said.
While visiting Newport Beach,
Bonano saw Huse's "Welcome to
Newport Beach• mural near the
Balboa Peninsula Pavilion depict-
ing the lifeguard tower at 32nd
Street. He was so Inspired by the
image that he called the duunber
of commerce to find out who
painted it.
Huse was invited to Bonann's
Malibu home, where she showed
him some of her previous art-
work. Bonann already has a col-
led:ion ol SO lifeguard-themed
watercolors and aaylk:s, but
none with hlm in it. The idea of
painling Bonann directing the
cast of •eaywatch • was actually

•1 said, 'J-iow about doing a

said. And from there, Huse
began the two-month task of cre-

are cloae-ups of Bonann directing

saw fit.
"It's been a real fun project.•
she said
Since moving to Balboa
Island two years ago, Huse's
paintings have become known
nationwide. People who visit the
island see her work at area gal-
leries and restaurants and then
commission her to paint personal
images and other beach-orient-
ed scenes.
She grew up lndianapolis,
lnd.iana, and at age 10, received
a scholarship to study at a local
art college. She later studied fine
art and graphic design at Indiana
University and moved to South-
ern California after Mishing col-
lege.
She landed a job as an art
director at an advertising agency
and for 10 years now, has been
painting and creating images of
Southern California.
Huse, whose paintings sell for
up to $10,000 apiece, specializes
in custom pastel paintings
reflecting the California and
beach lifestyle. •

Huse shares a Balboa Island
gallery and studio with inventor

lic is welcome to meet and watch
Huse work on the •eaywatch•

Gallery Newman. She said she
hopes to have it done by the first

Russian emigre and Newport Beach bead artist
has world on a string with her intricate work. which
is featured in local galleries and in her homeland
By Cecilia Fannon, Dally Pl/or
Luclmila Nepomrun walks into
the room, opens the lid to a piano
and, standing, knocks out
Mozart's •Rondo Alla 1\lrca"
before sitting down to be inter-
viewed.
Her fingers are exceptionally
agile and expressive as she
speaks in the language of her
native Russia. One can easily
believe that her bands and pierc-
ing blue eyes have made her a
master bead-maker. With the
rapidity of David Copperfield, she
floats ~ piece of white silk onto an
available surface, and conjures
hundreds of pieces of seed-bead
art before your eyes, necklaces
woven from every color of the
rainbow ... more than a quarter-
century of work.

she met her future husband,
Vladimir Nepomnin, a pianist and
composer.
It WAI VladimiJ'5 Aunt Vera
who inspired Ludmlla's Ufelong
passion for beadwork. Vera Kon-

bad accumulated a collection of
beads from all over the world
when she began JMktng copies
of original 18th-century Russian
designs. Ten-year-old Serge, the
Nepomnins' son. took the first
instruction from 'l'fotya (Aunt)
Vera on bead-weaving, passing
his enthusiasm for it on to his
mother.
For two years, Ludmila -wife

her imagination took wing, she

background.
Some pieces, evocatively
named, took two years in their
design and two months in the
rnalciog, such as Elegy, Snow
Maiden (named after a fairy tale)
and Malachite. In the process of
designing, she bas also developed
her own method, moving from 11

•She employs both traditional

"BAFO" (best and final offer),
is the fbst play commissioned by

"BAFO" is a satirical comedy
about w9rkers in the defense
industry whose jobs are threat-

find themselves in a quandary
while trying to justify the project
they come up with to save their
jobs.
The term BAPO, best and final

level.

a very intriguing phrase,• Strelicb

Strelich said the phrase is used

cosmic sense. •u you loot for levels, they are

me is to put in those layers while
preserving the surface luster that
makes you laugh. H I can get peo-
