T he much-anticipated homecoming of
Bruce Fleisher at Newport Beach Country

Fleisher, the Senior PGA Tour's leading mon-

of a severe viral infection that hospitalized him
for four days in February.
After Fleisher's third even$ this s~ason, the
GTE Classic in Lutz, Fla., he came. down with a
virus and needs more time to r~over, tourna-

Williams said. "'That's their No. 1 priority."
Williams said the best part about her job is see~

Don't allow lnteramericana baCk on the field

• lnteramericana Soccer League
(~Banned soccer league seeks
reinstatement,# Feb. 24).
Have I got this right? After a
stabbing at a soccer game, sever·
aJ alcohol-related incidents, vio-
lations of the curfew rules, and
complaints from the neighbor-
hood for littering, you're taking a
poll to see jf the city should allow
this group back, after the city has
banished them?
. DON LEACH I DAILY PILOT
reason for that is the other
leagues have respected the rules,
and you have to do quite a bit to
lose your rights to play soccer.
I just believe we should stay
firm. with the decision that has
been made because I think we
seem today to be bending the
rules for people who break them,
and we can't do that. I think we
have to send a m essage to all
young people that we make these
rules to respect the community.
That you should play within the
hours th.at are kept, that you
shouldn't bring weapons, that
you should not be drittldng.
· H we don't stand firm, we are
going to have mor.e problems lat-
er on. It is sact, because they live
here in our area. But I do think
we should go by what the city
has done, and they should not be
allowed to play here because
they don't respect the rules.
JAMES RICHARDS

My comment on giving the

question of the day is no. I don't
feel they should get.a second

such as Balearic.
These open spaces are for
families, and Costa Mesa resi-
dents must have first access at all
times to these facilities. The
Interamericana Soccer league
does not belong at Baleari~ for
any reason. I have witnessed the
dawn-until-dusk noise pollution
and littering of our park o-q every
Sunday in the past months. Add
to this the unacceptable incidents
and various violations that have
occurred while this group has
used the park, and there is only
one conclusion to be drawn -
absolutely no reinstatement.
ROBERT SPICER
Costa Mesa
I am a 30-year resident here in
the Newport Beach area, and I
would like to make a comment
with regard to the breaking of
the rules for the banned soccer
league.
Why recant, unless you have
some reason for thinking they
will be different? If you had stat-
ed one good reason for thinking
they might not prevent the same
liability, I would suggest a re-
evaluation of the decision. But
based on the article. if the city of
Costa Mesa allows them back, it
would undo all of the good of its
original action.
lnteramertcana Soccer pr~sldent Edgar Vasquez is trying to get back homefleld privileges for his
soccer league ln Costa Mesa.
They have been parking in
Fairview Park and going over to
dilf erent fields at Estancia High
School. They were there this
Sunday, bunches and bunches of
people playing different sports.
So I don't think we should give
these people a seconq chance,
unless they want to be charged
for it.
Given the three serious inci-
dents that happened in a nine-
month period, it does show that
they are not willing to respect
the rules that have been put ,
before them. So I think in order
to be reinstated, we need to con-
tinue to extend this violation for
a longer period, say six more
months. And then reinstate them
on a probationary period of let-
ting them play, say, three games
here in our area and see if they
can keep with the rules. It seems to me these same citi·
zens who were defended the first
time are still entitled to the city's
protection. They did it right the
first time. There was no proba-
tion period. So, what is different?

doing a land office business in
survival ki~. lf Grant Boys is
doing so well, th.ink how similar •
businesses in Idaho are doing.
Idaho is stocked with survivalists,
not to mention retired Los Ange-
les cops who probably thought
the world had .come to an end
when chief of police Daryl Gates
was fired. ·
However, it's not only the strict
survivalists donning their carnou·
flage jackets and checking the
fluid level in their Coleman
lanterns who are bringing big
smiles to Grant Boys. Another
group is making the cash regis·
ters ring -the Y2K people.
We entered the computer age
·during this century -..-1900 to
1999 -so all those zillions of
chips start with the figure 1. Now
all of those chips heve to be con-
verted to have the figure 2 in
place of the 1. U lhls isn't done by
the end of this century, we will
}).ave no food m the supermarkets,
the IRS won't be able to check
our income taxes, and we will
have' no gasoline for our cars. It's
going to be tough, baby. And
that's why the Y2K people are
making the cash registers ring at
Grant Boys as they stock up on
dried figs and bottled water.
However, I'm not about to stock
up on anything. I have a family
history to back my position.
I had an uncle who was a
drinking man. When Prohibition
came, he stocked up on whiskey,
cases and cases of whiskey. Then,
horro~ of horrors, just a few weeks
after Prohibition went into effect,
be up and died His wife, a non-
drinker and member of the

tious, character-building whiskey

in anticipation of Y2K. I may die
the next day.
I'm not going to stock up on
anything. What lam g~ing t& do
is go to Cook's Comer. My rea-
soning is as follows:
On the possibility, however
remote it may be, that the world
is going to come to an end, I sup-
pose it will come by way of some
cosmic catastrophe ~arth ...
quakes, floods, typhoons, melting
of polar icecaps, fires, volcanoes -m other words, nature in
tumult. nus I want to see.
Obviously, the best place from
which to see all'this is the top of
Saddleback Mountain. However,
at age 88, climbing to the top of
Saddleback is simply out of the
question. So I've compromised on
Cook's Comer, which is part of
the way up Saddleback. The view
is good, the chance of hann
rather remote.
There is one small, niggling
problem.
As the whole world knows,
Cook's Comer is a favorite water·
mg hole Qf b*ers. 'Fair enough.
I'll buy a couple of rounds and
should be accepted into their '
ranks. But, even so, there's a bare
possibility that things won't work
out just as I have planned. There
is a possibility, remote though it
may be, that among the other
bikers there may be some Hells
Angels. H so, I hope none of them
remember that I'm the judge who
sent to prison the president of the
San Berdoo Mother Chapter of
the Hell's Angels.
lf that should occur, what
would happen to ine would make
the end of the world seem like a
walk in the park.

W:en former UCLA men's basketball
standout Cameron Dollar was hired as
oach at Southern California College
last9 year, he had to go about recruiting players
with what little time he had. He had heard some
good things about a player who liked to shoot
aroUQd at Compton College named Jabari
Siln.m9ns, so he decided to take a look.
·He did nothing good that day to impress
me,• Dollar said. "But I'd heard good things
about him and decided to keep an eye on him.·
Dollar got a better look while Simmons was
playing summer ball in the Say No Classic and
watched him mature over the course of a few
months. •1t was like he transformed before my
eyes,• Dollar said. •He was in better shape and helped ,... _____ _
his team win. I told him, U

to play.•
Simmons, a senior,
wasn't able to join the
starting lineup until after
the fall semester at sec.
His addition to the team
made a world of difference.
When things appeared
their worst and sec bad
lost five consecutive Golden

and led the Vanguards past Point Loma

Simmons bad 30 points.
Three days later, Simmons bad a team-high
14 points in SCC's 59-58 upset win over then
GSAC front-runner Wesbnont. If that wasn't
enough, he scored a career-high 36 points to
lead sec past eventual conference champion
Azusa Pacific, 84-76, four days after Westmont.
•H was our best talent on the floor,• Doll4r
said. •He knows bow to play at a high level of
ability and he made our team better because of
it. He brought a lot of energy to our oUcnse and
defense, which is where he really goes alter it.•
The Vanguards finished tho regular a.son
with an 83-72 loss to Westmont, but the
Vanguards managed to go 5-4 in thcli final nine
gll.mes of coruerence. Smunons, 'who had
ave1aged close to 20 points per game since ho'd
been a part of the sUirtlng lin up, had 19.

Simmons said. •He was a great player al UCLA
and I knew that if he showed me someUung, 1t

It was a good match and both player and
coach have benefited from it. Simmons has
become a much better player, who couJd
possibly play professional ball, according to
Dollar. In tum, when Dollar was trying very hard
to g~t the Vanguards fired up, it was Simmons
who led by example.
"There was a lot of frustration from our
record,• Simmons said. •But I talked on the
court and kept them going. I knew we were a
better team than we showed.•
Biola ended Southern California College's

Follow the l?lay and bidding of Lhh
deal Lhen decide whether any errors
were made and. if so, by whom?
Nonh-Sou1h were playing five-
card majors. hence 1he one-club
opening bid by North. Thereafter, the
bidding was nonnal and Lhe final
contract was cenainly rea.~onable.
West led the king of dinmonds. East foJlowed with the three as
declarer, one of the world's $1'tal
players, mad4 a routine holdup play,
contrjbutin$ the seven from hnnd.
West continued with a diamond,
taken in dummy. Declarer came to
hand wilh a high club 10 run 1he jack
of he.arts, losing to the king, The dfa.
mond return was trumped in the
closed hand and a low heart from
South fetched the queen. Declarer
won in dummy, drew the las1 trump
and ran the jatlc of spades. That lost
to the klng, but declarer had the rest
of the tricks. • , ·
h might seem that nothing unusual
occurred but, in fact, there were two
major errors. First, declarer could
have assured the contract by rising
with the ace of diamonds at trick one
and then continuing as above. 11)C
holdup ac1ually provided West with
an opportunity to beat the contract.
If West realizes 1hal a diamond
continuation was futile and shifts 10 a
spade, South wi11 rue not laking the
ace at trick one. Whether or 001
dummy's ace of spades is won imme-
diately, West cannot be prevented
from scoring a spade ruff wilh the
queen of heans for a on~trick set.
Try it. In a way, declarer's misplay at
trick one and West's miscue a trick
later restored equity.
