1\yo woIDen,
two stories,

D uring my youth -the
1920s -women were
second-class citizens.
Three professions were open to
them: nurses, schoolteachers
and librarians. That was all. Men
froze women-out of an other pro-
fessions. For example:
When my Aunt Charlotte
went to medical school during
the 1880s, she spent four long,
lonely years in isolation. Durlng
those four years not one male
fellow· student spoke a single,
solitary word to her. I always
thought Aunt Charlotte was kind
of grouchy. Now I understand
why ..
A half century later, things in
the professions were improving,
at least in law school. When I
went to law school during the
1930s, we had a woman in our
law school -a single, solitary
woman. However, we spoke to
her. We were afraid not to. She
was an Olympic shotput champi-
on.
Even back in the 1920s, a few
women bucked the tide in the
business world. In Balboa, we
had two -Mabel Hodgkinson
and Madame LaRue. Each
owned and operated her own
business.
Mabel Hodgkinson owned a
dress shop on Main Street in the
block between the Pavilion and
Bay Avenue. She was the moth-
er of Chief of Police Rowland
Hodgkinson. She and her son
operated a small hamburger
joint on Main Street.
Then, when her son became
chief of police she opened a
dress shop.
She called her shop
•Hodge's" because Hodgkinson
was too long. However, when
she married a man named Hom,
I notice she didn't change the
name to •Hom'1." I guess she
bad come to like •Hodge's.•
Mabel was a breezy, outgo-
ing, self-assured woman who
had the respect of all the male
business owners on Main Street.
Madame LaRue wa.s a little
more controversial
Madame LaRue owned and
operated the Balboa Theatre on
Main Street, a ramshackle, two-
story, frame building that must
have been a fire trap. Her real
name was Osgood. Just how she
became LaRue I do not know
nor do I wish to speculate.

Whether the current batch of

Joe Cordaro, a spokesperson

it is illegal to bury the animals

said Newport Beach lifeguards
did not call him before burying
the bodies, thereby foreclosing

"The officials there are

COSTA MESA -Residents
who stood up against the city's
proposal to fence portions of the
Shalimar Drive area were vindi-
cated Monday night ymen City
Council members vafed instead to
clean up apartment buildings and
build a new park.
More than a dozen smiling res-
. idents gathered outside City
Council chambers following the
decision that proposes spending
federal grant money to purchase
and demolish. one dilapidated
apartment building to build d
community park.
A portion of the grant money,
which must be used to target
blighted areas and benefit low
income res1dents, would be used
to hire a full-time code enforce-
ment officer.
Residents say they need some-
one who will inspect bwldmgs
and cite owners whose properties
and buildings are magnets for rats
and are ill-maintained.
ln January. residents told City
Council members that $8,500 in
grant money earmarked for fenc-
ing in their neighborhood would
be better spent on cleaning it up
and helping the children.
Altogether the co~cil mem-
bers approved the reallocation of
$868,000 in grant funds that
include $153,000 toward engi-
neering costs for the downtown .
community center and about
$413,000 to repair sidewalks.
City Council members also
approved new city fees including
a $2 increase for a photo identifi-
cation card at the job center and a
$30 decrease for false alarm calls.
The community center will
now charge a $75 rental fee for its
second stage. The new lees
include recreational fees, building
permit fees and public service

NEWPORT BEACH -Ronald S. Rubi-

the government again -at least for now.
Rubino has signed on for a three-
month stint as financial consultant for the
Orange County 'n'ansportation Authority,
developing a financial study for the
agency.
Rubino, a Newport Beach resident, has
been a controversial figure since his
indictment in 1995 for allegedly helping
former neasurer Robert L. Citron divert
$93 million ln interest earnings from a
county-run invesbnent pool. A jury dead-
locked on \he question of his guilt, and
Rubino later pleaded •no contest" to a
misdemeanor charge to avoid jail time.
Under the plea agreement, Rubino was
sentenced to 100 houn of comm.unity ser-

Armed robber escapes

A robber struck a Costa Mesa

with nearly $200 in cash after
threatening a clerk at gunpoint.
A man walked into the lobby
of La Quinta Inn at 1555 South

The man approached a clerk,
placed a grocery bag on the
counter, and demanded cash as
he pulled a chrome-colored .38
revolver from his sweater, Boylan
said.
The gunman emptied the reg-

down on the floor. He emptied
the clerk's rear pocket, making
off with $190 in all, Boylan said.

After yesterday's snow, the

pinnacles and mow-covered

We're at the bottom of Anvers
Island (64-50 south, 63-30 west)
and crunching our way out of
Port Lockroy, after visiting the
two keepers of the British
research base.
Ice scratches past the hull. A
big thud and a shudder is felt as
Polar Mist smacks a bergie bit -
an iceberg chunk -the size of a
washing machine.
Last night we were in a clear
anchorage, this morning we
awoke surrounded by ice. All

GRANTMANSHIP TRAINING
Orange Coast College offers a
week-long Grantmanship l\"ain-
ing Program from Feb. 24-28 at
OCC's Sailing Center, 1801 W.
Coast Highway, Newport Beach.
Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to
minutes with shotgun-like
reports that echoed across the
bay. The huge glacier had a
crevasse along its top, which had
grown since we arrived.
While we poured water into
Polar Mist's tanks, there was a
deafening roar .. The entire right
face of the glacier calved ott,
sending hundreds of tons of ice
thundering down, falling verti-
cally like a dynamited high-rise.
Plumes of spray shot high into
the air and a five-foot wave
pushed out toward us. Nearby
roe.ks and an undulating carpet
of tee kept the impact to a deep
roll.
During the past few days we
visited two research bases, the
Port Lockroy and Gonzales
Vldela, manned by Chileans.
Both are uninsulated huts built
on small granite islands. These
rock piles are also home to large
colonies of Gentoo penguins.
Brad Avery
Staff of

and how
they cope
in such iso-

did not
delve into
the politics
of how they
came to receive their assign-

Under the Antarctic treaty,
man cannot interfere with·
nature. So the hundreds of nest-
ing penguins at the bases are in
charge. It is difficult to walk any-
where without stepping on a
penguin. its nest, or slimy guano.
The smell staggers you before
you even reach shore.
Our first attempt to land was
rebuffed by dozens of birds pro-
tecting their chicks. After our
visits it became clear·to us that
the rank of Antarctic dangers are
as follows: 4. Sinking in a gale;
3. Palling in a c:revasse; 2. Leop-

shot, we're just standing there -
we can't even proceed," Cordaro
said. "However, if the beaches
alert us to the fact, we can keep an
eye on it, and it we see a pattern
developing, we can launch an

we're going to tolerate anyone

really hard to prosecute."
