NEWPORT BEACH-The start of spring
may be a week away, but a strong storm
front that passed through Orange County
on Monday reminded restdents that winter
ts lingering.
Don't fetch your swimswts just yet. A
storm that swept down the Pacific Coast
from the Gull of Alaska brought whipping
winds and chilly temperatures to the area
early Monday morning. The storm dropped
about .19 of an inch of rain in Newport
Beach, according to the National Weather
Service. The cold weather prompted resi-
dents to bundle up with heavy jackets
before the clouds parted about noon.
•ttardly any rain all year, and I have to
go out like I'm living in Aspen,• said Vir-
ginia Adams, who was camped near the
nonfiction section of a bookstore in Triangle
Square. "It's been freezing. This weather
isn't typical.•
Adams is right. Alter last year's dousing
by the weather phenomenon El Nilio,
another system called La Ntiia is keeping
areas such as Southern California relatively
dry. The feminine sibling of El Niilo is limit-
ing the amount of moisture into the atn10s-
phere and keeping storm tracks farther
north.
While Southern Califonua ts enjoymg
warm weather, places such as Seattle and
Boston are getting pwnmeled by blustery
conditions.
"La Niila produces ocean waters much
colder than those ol El Nmo, • said Mark
Moede, a meteorologist for the Nabonal
Weather Service. "Our predictions have
held up so far. We are crossing our fingers it
will stay the same.•
Moede added the ram totals for most or

mal for the year to date. Last March, the
reservoirs were 100% above normal, he
added.
remodeling the entire interior.
Birtcher will help with the
process from the conceptual
design phase all the way through
cortstruction, with the foundabon
paying for the hard costs, Wren
s~d.
A city building penrut for the
seismic retrofit is expected to be
issued this week.
The renovation, however, ts
not scheduled to start until next
year.
Wren said it is difficult to mea-
sure the value of Birtcher's dona· '

general contractor could make
the project at least 15% cheaper.

The truth is, a committee wouldn't find the

'Tonight's meeting will focus

The others are Grant Howald
Park in Corona del Mar, Lincoln

According to the study, West
Newport Park, at the comer of
West Coast ffighway and
Prospect Avenue, could accom-

skateboard park by eliminating
two handball courts and some
grass a.rep.
It would cost about $167 ,000
to build.
'The existing parking lot
should be enough to handle the

the park's users would be local

Recently the Daily Pilot
published a prize-winning sports
ethics essay by a high school
student who was miffed that her
coach would only allow the very
best athletes to row for the crew
team; and that average athletes
had no chance to compete. She
thought coaches should let
everyone play.
Coach Bill Sumner's emotional
comments at last Thursday's
ceremony to open the new
all-weather track at Corona del

counterpoint to the young lady's
complaint, but his message to
her and all athletes like her did

His message was sunple and It
choked him to deliver it: •Never
listen to people who tell you
something can't be done; listen
only to those who know how to
get things done."
The furthest thing from our
coach's mind was building a
track to enhance his professional
reputation. Certainly it does that.
The track is the finest in the
county and getting it built was
one heck of an accomplishment.
It is a pure symbol of how a
community can accomplish
wonders under the leadet$hip
of one d~termined individual.
And it is. a leadership seed that
is now permanently planted in
'. • the minds of the track and cross
country team members who
gathered around their coach to
cut the ribbon ('Thursday).
That picture did make the
paper and it should hang
permanently on the school house
walls and in the City Council
chamber. Leadership is best
taught by example and in a
world which seems short of good
examples, we dare not ignore
the best ones when they happen.
