NEWPORT-MESA -Stu-

School officials are taking
steps to make sure the reporting
error, in which the district
underreported such offenses by
almost 300%, does not happen
again, said Mike Murphy, who

said.
By an overwhelrrung ma1onty,
parents voted Tuesday evening to
ask the school board to redraw
the boundaries, poss1bly to go into
effect by fall 2000. Parents also
voted to allow students who are
already enrolled to stay at the
school. Their 5iblirigs, howev~,

As of press time Tuesday, par-

new boundaries would be, but
seemed to be leaning toward

meeting could be heard mutter-

have a 20-to-1 ratio of students to
teachers tn kindergarten or where
to put a soence lab and a com-

will have over the next few years.

After reading the story, students made
their own flat Stanleys and sent them off to

The Stanleys were taken on various
tourist outings, photographed, then sent
back to the children, along with pictures
showing the fun things the paper dolls got
to do. -While students were workmg away in
their classroom, their paper-thin alter egos
got to attend stock car races, bask on beach-
es in Florida and visit castles in England, an
aquarium in Seattle and cl peanut museum
in New Mexico.
Some of the dolls were kind enough to
include maps, T-shirts, ethruc food treats
and national flags for thelJ' earthbound

Early last week, students had a party to
welcome their Stanleys home.
"My aunt knows Thai, so she took my

I l's a dream most boys relish at
one point ln their childhood -
playing for a professional
baseball team.
Dave Dravecky yearned to
make it to the big leagues. ·
He tasted success at various
tunes dwing bis eight-year major
league career. He was an All-Star
and pitched in the playoffs and
World Senes. Life couldn't have
been better for the native of
Youngstown, Ohio.
But when a growth was found
on the upper .)art of his arm,
Dravecky's priorities suddenly
changed. The one tool that got
him to the show was painfully
taken from him when the south-
paw pitcher had his left a.rm
amputated 10 years ago.
uThe initial thought was, 'Why
mer he said. MWhen the doctors
discovered the lwnp in my arm,
they told me I was never going to
pitch again outside or a miracle.
But I did."
Ir you're a sports fan or a
devoutly spiritual person,· the
name Dave Dravecky is vaguely

Dravecky, whose riveting story

Dravecky wouldn't play baseball
again. Doctors told him be would
be lucky to play catch with his

After 50% of his deltoid muscle
was removed, be began strength-
ening his arm. He returned to a
rousing ovation in Candlestick
Park on Aug. 10, 1989, when be
pitched a one-bit shutout over
seven innings. Hts comeback
looked promising.
Five days later, the world ~
an image that is still seared ~
minds of baseball fans. Dravecky
was in the middle of his delivery
against the Montreal Expos in
Olympic Stadium when his arm
snapped in half. Dravecky spi-
raled in pain and fell off the
mound. The tumor was back, and
this time doctors feared it would
spread. They decided to ampu-
tate his arm.
With his career ended by can-
cer, Dravecky struggled with his
identity. He wasn't a star pitcher
anymore. He was a one-armed
father and husband who bad
trouble putting on his pants or a
belt through the loops.

Our next joust with Murphy
was deceptively benign. The pilot
couldn't start the engines of our

a machine to blow air into the
fans. The rest of our flight to Den·

even five minutes early.
The infamous train from the
concourse into the terminal didn't
break down, our luggage was
waiting for us inside and the jit-

on time.
It was dark when the van
dropped us off at our driveway,
but we could clearly see the
large, round, ugly, brown bathtub
on our front lawn. Murphy .
Inside, construction debris was
everywhere. Here a S·gallon
bucket of wall texture, every-

The old, S·gallon toilet from
the master bath sat on the floor of
our bed.room. A new toilet resided
in the living room, destined to be
installed in the powder room we
were carving out of a linen closet.
The only working restroom in
the house was upstairs. Its condi·

Sure. Dogs eat homework and the

But I am a trusting and soft·

delay the work until we left for
California. It would be completed,
our contractor vowed, by the Fri·

The dreadful mess we came

problem.
When we checked our phone

Alter a half-dozen remarkably

City backs bid to limit access
to tobacco goods at stores
•Group of Estancia
students wins Costa
Mesa council support for
ordiriance k eeping
cigare ttes off. store
counters.
£USE GEf.
COSTA MESA -The youth
group S~ak Out! succeeded in
persuading the City Council to
call for a more business·friendly
ordinance designed to keep
tobacco products out of the
reach of minors.
The group of Estancia High
School teens associated with
Camp Fire Boys and Girls has
been lobbying the city for the
past year for an ordinance that
would require merchants who
sell· tobacco products to move
them out of the reach of chil·
dren. The ordinance is intended
to encourage more interaction
between merchants anti their
customers in the sale of tobacco
products.
The group made an impas-
sioned but unsuccessful bid for
the ord.inaiice in August and re·
approached the council Monday.
In a politically strategic move
and a show of perseverance,
Speak Outl members waited
until Councilwoman Linda
Dixon took office in December
before giving the ordinance
another try,
Their effort paid off, with
Dixon 5\JPP()rting tbe proposal
and Mayor Gary Monahan
reversing his original opposition.
The council directed the oty
attorney to draw up a draft ordl·
nance. It will be reviewed by a
newly formed c-0mtnittee before
it is brought back to the council
for approval. The committee will
. be made up of representatives
from city committees, businesses
and the Costa Mesa Chamber of
Commerce.
·we went out and talked lo
more people, and we realized
what we needed was a more
holistic approach.• said Judy
Valenzuela, the group's adviser.
Monahan initially bad
opposed the ordinance because
as it was written, it would have
been burdensome and punitive
to store owners, he said. Speak
Out! proposed revisions Monday
that would exempt stores and
cigar lounges that rely OJ\ tobac-
co products for the majority of
their business.
Speak Outl member Eva. Var·
ma said the revisions were not a
major compromise on the
group's part. but rather a practi-
cal l~son in how government
worked.
•we are pro-business,• Var-
ma said. ·we never mtended lo
do anything that was going to
hurt businesses in Costa Mesa.•
Vanna said the ordinance
would accomplish what the
group orighullly intended
despjte the proposed reviliom.
Tom Cottom ol Hi-Tune Cel-
lars Smoke Shack spoke aboul
the eco~omtc lmpacts UHi
re tnctions that the pro~
ordmance would place on bis
busmess. However, both he and
Chamber President Ed Fawcett
~ressed a willingn~ to work
witl) Spea)\ Out! on the ordi·
nance to satisfy the ~p's
desires while protecting the
interests of business owners.
Councilman Joe Erickson,
who voted against the first pnr
posal and did not change b.is
position Monday, was pbilo·
sophically opposed to the stu-
dents' efforts. Removmg tempta-
tion does not neces5drily teach a
child responsibility, he said.
•The way to teadl a kid not to ·
do something is not to move it
away, but to tell them it's
WTong," he said.
John and Ernie Feeney also
spoke against the ordinance.
"We are dictating to the busi·
ness comrmmity how and wh~re
they sell a legal product,• Ernie
Feeney said.
She also said she was again.st
•nannyism• and more •big gov·
emment.•
John Feeney, who said he
started smoking at age 13,
added a personal anecdote: •1
ought die of a smoking·related
illness, but it's more likely I'll die
from an overdose of big govern-
ment busybodies,• be said.

Por the past several months,
the association, the 'Library
board of trustees and the Arts
Commission have worked to find
the best place to· relocate the
culpture, said Hallie Strock. the
city's cultural arts coordinator.
After considering several
'sites, the groups chose a small 0
grove of pine trees next to the
main entrance of the Central
Library on Avocado Avenue.
The move, intended to coin-
cide with the 15th anniversary of
the Okazaki relationship this
August, was authorized by May~
or Dennis O'Neil and Acting
City Manager ~pennis D~er,
Strock said.
The concrete for the new
location already has been
poured, and the association has
been collecting donations to cov-
er the $1,000 relocation costs.
But when people started to
get wmd of the plan, at least one
resident who likes the friendship
sculpture decided he didn't want
it to go anywhere.
Tom Hyans, president of the
Central Balboa Homeowners
Association, told the City Coun-
cil lal\t week that he objected to
the move and was prepared to
put up a fight.

The skate park subcommittee
-made up of Commissioners
Marc Franklin, Robin Sinclair and
Donald Pfaff -has been meeting
for several months lo come up
with a solution to the problem.
Though there is a need for skate
parks in the city, so far there's
nowhere to put them.
Four city-owned or leased sites
-West Newport, Grant Howald,
Peninsula Park and Lincoln Ath-
letic Center -were found to be
the best possible locations m a
study by landscape architects
Purkis-Rose Associates.
Steve Rose, a principal in the
firm, spoke Tuesday night about
the success other cities have had
building 'community skate parks.
Strong support for a skate park
in the city did come from a few
parents and a few local skaters
and advocates.
"I don't want us to all just say
we need one, but not here and
district.•
Strock said the groups agreed
the library would be the best
spot because it would be more
visible to children, tounsts and
other people who may not fre-
quent City Hall.
Evarts said the gateway parks
were considered as possible sites
for the sculpture severifi years
ago. But because the statue
would be right on busy Newport
Boulevard, it was deemed too
susceptible to graffiti and would
cause other safety and parking
problems, she said.
The City Council will take up
• the issue next week.
it. •u we make a mistake, we let
people know," be said. "That's my
policy."
Mwphy said the vast·majority or
those students had committed
drug or alcohol offenses, which
means the figure the district gave
to the state is wrong.
Mwphy attributed the discrep-
ancy to 9. misunderstanding about
what constituted a crime.
"I think some schools didn't
realize what the definition or a
crime wai and what had to be
reported, H Mwphy said. "We need
to go through what is and is not a
reportable offense.~
District officials plan to give a

that's it," said Newport Shores
resident Teri Ashurst. "We need a
place. The time has come, and we
need to find it.·
Paul Schmitt, a Newport Beach
resident and skateboard manu-
facturer, agreed.
"The fact is, we've got to come
up with a solution here,· he said.
HThere is not a safe a n(i legal
place for kids to skateboard in the
city of Newport Beach.·
But the vast majority of the 50
or so people who came to the
meeting, including representa-
tives of the Police Department,
voiced serious concerns about
noise, crime, parking and the idea
of adding to the already heavily
congested West Newport area.
Franklin, who chairs the com-
mittee, said he was encouraged
by the community's general
a cceptance of the sport, which
wasn't necessarily the case at the
Bonita Canyon meetings.
But if the couunittee hears siln-
ilar feedback about the other
potential locations, he said,
"We're going to have to go back
and scratch our heads to figure
out what we can do.•

PCL penCile-d m· for Div. IX
• Proposal calls for PCL to return to
Diyision IX for '99 football playoffs.
BJ\ltm' FJ\UIJCNF.ll
~Piiot
Jbe CIF Southern Section has taken the
first step toward changing a football playoff
system Costa Mesa High Coach Jeny Howell
caUed a bad joke.
A •proposal created by the section's Playoff
Groupings Committee would shift the Pacific
Coast League from Division VI to Division IX
for the 1999 playoffs. The Sea View League
would re.ma.in in Division VI.
The committee will hear apPeaLs April 13,
then submit a final recommendation to the
Southern Section Council before its April 29
. meeting.
All four Newport-Mesa District football
coaches endorsed the changes, which would
essentially restore the postseason picture they
faC#(i from 1994-97.
.".I think it's a pretty good effort by CIF to
get balance in there,· said Howell, an outspo-
k~ critic of a playoff format .which grouped ..
--HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
the PCL with the Sea View last fall. Mesa
drew a first-round playoff date at Sea View co-
champion Irvine, which defeated the Mus-
tangs, 53-35.
"I think (this iecommendation) places us as
well as we could be placed," Howell said.
The plan wo~d group the PCL with the
Freeway, Garden Grove, Orange and Valle
Vista leagues. Joining the Sea View in the
Division VI ~ould be the Century, Empire and
Golden West, as well as the Suburban
League, formerly in Division IX.
La Mirada, a dominant force in the Subur-
ban League throughout the 1990s, has made
five CIF champ1oriship-game appearances in
Division VIIl and Division IX since 1992. The
Matadores were Division IX runners-up last
fall, losing to Suburban League nval Mayfair
in the title game.
"That's a good league,• said Newport Coach
Jeff Brinkley, who played and coached in the
Suburban League at Norwalk High. Ml.a Mira-
da is basically like an Orange County school
and Mayfair is really on the rise athletically.•
Estancia Coach Dave Perkins, whose
Eagles will be joined by Corona d~ Mar in the
PCL next \fall, also wouldn't miss potential
playoff dates against Sea View squads.
"I think. our league can be one of the more
dominant ones in Division IX,• Jerk.ins said.
CdM Coach Dick Freeman said his Sea
Kings will compete well in Division IX~ as they
did with the majority of schools in Division VI.
"We will be OK against schools from the
Orange County leagues, but the other (Valle
Vista) league will be a complete mystery.•
The Valle Vista, expanded to eight schools
last year, consists of Baldwin Park, Bonita,
Covina, Ganesha, Northview, San Dimas,
Sierra Vista ~d South Hills.
The Sub~an League is comprised of
Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, John Glenn, La
Mirada, Mayfair and Norwalk.
The plan calls for the Sunset League to
remain in Division I, but the South Coast
League would drop to Division II. The
reformed Angelus League, including county
parochial powers Mater Dei, Santa Margarita
and Servit~, would also compete in Division I.

Corona del Mar
• A CIF Southern Section Division I champion as a
freshman, his high school career didn't last very long .
RIOi.ARD DUNN
IXitPb
I nstead of high school 1111
tennis, Taylor Dent
graduated early. That
is, he'd face opponents like
Thomas Enqvist or Sweden
rather than, say, Woodbridge
High's third singles.
The former Corona del Mar
High standout -who didn't last
long in the CIF Southern Section
ran.ks, one year -accomplished
just about everything a prep
player could in a spring.
As a freshman, Dent struggled
with growth spurts that effected
his knees and hindered his
tennis progress, which had been
brought along slowly by lus
father, Phil, a former Top-10
touring pro.
But by midseason in 1996,
Dent's pains subsided and he
began to.in.fleet tennis torture on
anyone who would dare stand on
the other baseline.
Dent defeated Andrew Park of
San Marino in the CIF individual
singles final to become only the
third freshman in Southern
Section history to win a smgles
title, following Palos Verdes'
Pete Sampras (1987) and Laguna
Beach's Jon Leach (1988).
Speaking of Sampras, some
industry articles published last
year labeled Dent •the next
great American tennis player,•
and •America's best hope for a
Sampras replacement.•
Lofty expectatioris. indeed.
but Dent, who reached the
quarterfinals at the U.S. Open,
French Open and Australian
Open junior championships,
doesn't shy away from
challenges.
Dent, who would be a senior
at CdM this spring if he'd stayed
on a regular pace. graduated
early (from Monte VISta public
school) last year and turned pro
at the U.S. Open in 1998. He left
high school tennis after one year
to devote himself to a year-round
tennis program. managed by lus
father.
"It's still a learning process.·
said Dent, preparing for the
Upton Championships later this
month at Key Biscayne, Fla., an
l.Ulportant stop on the Association
ol Tennis Professionals Tour. •I'm
trying to improve my game bit
by bit to be with the big boys.
•(Tennis) is still fun, but it's a
diffetent sort of fun. There's not
much laughing. You've got to be
serious now ... it's hard to go out
there and play after a loss.•
While Dent, 6-foot-2, 200
pounds, has ta.ken some licks,
the 400th-ranked player on the
ATP Tour has dished out some
mighty blows, like during last
year's Mercedes-Benz Cup at the
Los Angeles Tennis Center
(UCLA) when Dent advanced to
the mainwaw after winning
three qualifying matches.
Dent, who turns 18 on April
24, lost to Enqvist in the first
round or the main draw.
His biggest wm in the pro
ranks was against 45th-rank.ed
Manano Puerta last June at the
Hamlet Cup on Long Island.
"Oh, yeah, there's a real fine
line (between a top-50 player
and a guy ranked in the 400s),"
Dent said. "All the guys are so
good. They're all really close
together.•
Dent, who started tournament
play later in We than most of his
peers, didn't waste much time
rising to the top once he got
serious. He soared to No. 1 in
the nation in the boys 14s and
earned a No. 4 national ranking
in the 16s the following year (at
age 15).
In 1997, Dent reached the
semifinals or the U.S. National
Hardcourt Championships in the
18s (at age 16), losing to the
eventual champion, Rudy Rake.
But. 111 the quarterfinals, Dent
defeated Jeffrey Monison in
what many called one of the
greatest matches in USTA history
at Kalamazoo, Mich., winning
6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).
In the '97 national
championships, Dent was
attempting to become the first
player ever to win USTA national
b.Ues in the 14s, 16s and 18s in
three consecutive years.
Dent's stepbrother, Brett
Hansen-Dent, won a CIF singles
title for Newport Harbor in 1990.
His mother, Bettyann, was also a
form.er touring pro.

offered lhe best chance, since the
opening lead suggested that the
queen of hearts wns badly placed. For
that to succeed. declarer would need
a good dul of luck -1tumJ>' would have to divide evenly and Wc~t would
have 10 have started with no more
than two heAIU.

Sometimes you can gel an accurate
count of the defenders' hands and
plan your line of play accordingly.
Occasionally, you have only an infer-
enual count to guide you.
Note North 's jump to game after
partner had opcncd in third seat and
West had overcalled. The fact that the
North hand had no wasted values in
diamonds suggested that South
would have play for gi:une even with
a light opening bid. ·
The defense had completed its
book. but West was trapped. No mat-
ter which minor suit the defender
played, declarer·~ club loser would
vanish. A club would be into doclar-
er's major tenace. and a diamond
would allow declarer to discard a
club from dummy while ruffin$ in
hand, then making the last four tncks
on a crossruff after cashing the ace of
clubs.
