COSTA MESA -Heruy T.
Segerstrom says it's not unusual for
stores to wait several yea.rs for a space
inside South Coast Plaza.
In fact, Hermes, Paris has waited 20
years and will finally open this sum-
mer. The French luxury retailer Will be
featured among 10 ne w stores in the
2.65-million-square-foot shopping
center's 30th Anniversary Collection.
"I th.ink it will be the most signifi-
cant single collection of stores that we
have produced in any year since the
center opened,• Segerstrom said in an
exclusive interview with the Daily
Pilot.
Although Segerstrom, 74, ra.relyl
grants interviews, he was enthusiastic
about South Coast Plaza's 30th
anniversary this year, which coincides
with the opening of the new stores.
The other high-end stores and
eateries coming this year are Lalique,
Mikimoto, Montblanc (Segerstrom
calls them the "Rolls Royce of pens"),
Oilily, Rainforest Cafe, Seeger, Sulka
anq ~abyGap. Meanwhile, the Coach
store will relocate to a larger space.
•South Coast Plaza is well known
in Milan, Paris and London,•
Segerstrom said. "We have some of
the top international retailers
approach us for space."
The reason Hennes waited so lon g
for its location, Segerstrom says, is
because its owners wanted an identi-
fiable storefront with a limestone
entranceway. The tony clothing and
handbag store will occupy a 6, 700-

COSTA MESA -Restaurant
and shop owners wanting liquor
licenses this year will be out of
luck if City Council members
pass a requested resolution.
Council.member Heather
Somers is seeking a resolution
that would ask the Department of
Alcohol Beverage Control to
deny all new liquor license
requests within Costa Mesa and
prohibit transfers of licenses
within the city until 1998.
· After imposing the teruµor ary
moratorium on licenses, Somers'
goal is to have no more than the
307 licenses already in the city,
limiting retailers and restaurant
owners to pW'chase them only
from other Costa Mesa hcensees
"I'm not a teetotaler, but we
need to draw the line some-
where," Somers said. "Licenses
that a.re to be acquired should be
acquired from other licensees
going out pf the city."
Somers said she was con-
cerned wit.1' the number of gaso-
line station markets that receive
conditlonal use alcohol permits.
HKids drive up. fill their car
with gasoline and fill their cooler
with liquor and drive off." Somers
said.
Councl..lmembe1 Joe Erickson
shared Somers' concerns about
irresponsible liquor !>ales, but
said he did not agree with the
resolution
"We should do everything in
our power to shut those guys
down.· Enckson sdld ·A morato-
rium on more transfers of licenses
might perpetuate licenses held
by mespons1ble owners."
Enckson added that passing
the resolution would make
licenses more expensive and that
many restaurants could not sur-
vive without liquor licenses.

JUST A UTru RESPECT l
Students recognize Ha.Jik
Causly, the security guard at
TeWinkle Middle School, as easi-
ly as they do their principal.
More than likely they have had
to report to him for pitking up
trash during lunchtime; talked
with him about their problems; or
simply been yielded by his hand
and a "Hey, hey, heyl Walk.
Walk." as they ran to the .cafete-
ria.
No matter what their contact,
one thing is certain in Causly's
mind: the students respect him.
"See those kids up against the
;wall, H he said, pointing to a
diverse group of adolescents
behind a basketball hoop. "Most
of them are pretty tough. Some of
them are gang members. But
they respect me and I respect
them."
•A;:. long as they abide by the
rules, I don't have a problem with
them," he said.
WALKING THE BEAT
• Causly, of Santa Ana, served as
an officer for the Orange County
Sheriff's Department and as a
guard for private corporations
before he started his job at
TeWmkle in 1990. His training as
an officer helps him to be more in
tune to potential problems, he
said.
"It's a matter of being patient
and being observant," he said,
looking out from beneath his
"SECURITY NMUSD" cap. "I
come in from a different angle
and surprise kids. I den't have a
set thing I do."
And those strategies become
essential for Causly, who not only
makes misbehaving students
sweep the sidewalk and pick up
trash, but also checks kids for
drugs and breaks up fights.

. The Davis Cup last hit Newport
Beach in 1977 when America
played South Africa at the New-
port Beach Tennis Club. Protesters
opposed to South African racial
policies crashed the games and
attracted worldwide publicity.
But Stuart has made some pre-
liminary preparations: alerting
the bureau's public relations firm,
assembling volunteers and identi-
fying potential sponsors.
America will match up against
the Netherlands and many say
the victor could go on to win the
Davis Cup. Stuart expects to sell
out his 4,500-capacity dub for all
three days of the event.
Stuart said he's been doing a
lot of "behind-the-scenes" work
-just in case the tournament
lands at his dub. uon Tuesday
things will start happening pretty
fast," be said.
After the location is
annO\mced, Stuart said, Palisades
members get one week to buy
tickets before sales open to the
public. "They're going to find a
lot of new friends then," he joked.

The Southland Ski Server
represents Mark Bixby's per-

the Internet can make the
world a better place, allowing
people to convert ideas into a
reality they share with others.
His "labor of love" provides ski

Sierra. Bixby maintains the site
when he's not providing techni-
cal support for the Coast Com-
munity College District's Infor-

It's a fast-loading, deceptive-
ly simple web page, acclaimed
for its coverage. Despite its
seemingly low-tech appear-
ance, it combines animated
graphics, a political principle
and comprehensive information
for a target audience.
OK. One animated graphic
and one political position -but
a lot of frequently updated
information for ski buffs.
In addition to rate sheets and
trail maps from resorts, Bi:xby's
site offers condition summaries
from contributing areas and
other skiers. Road and weather
reports help set you on the best

As for the politics, the site
advocates the same First

•Courier's victory lifts U.S. past
the Brazilians and into second
round at Newport Beach-based
Palisades Tennis Club April 4-6.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Piiot
NEWPORT BEACH -After days of
anticipation and a weekend of riveting
suspense, you could almost detect a col-
lective sigh of relief shaking the Newport
Beach boundaries Sunday for local tennis
aficionados and those affiliated with the
upcoming Davis Cup at Palisades Tennis
Club, when Jim Courier clinched the first
round for the United States in a pulsating
tiebreak that ended 13-11 in his favor.
Against a piercing Brazilian crowd
and 20-year-old Gustavo Kuerten, Couri-
er won a decisive Davis Cup match for
the third time in his career, defeating
Kuerten, 6-3, 6-2. 5-7, 7-6 (13-11), in
Ribeirao Preto, while perhaps giving
local afternoon ESPN viewers a glimpse
of the future, because the second round

ment is expected· to be played at Pal-
isades April 4-6.
Whether tans here will be as raucous
with horns and party favors as they were
in Brazil over the weekend is unknown,
but following the United States' 3-1 victo-
ry over Brazil, one thing is certain: nck-
ets will be a hot item.
·we had maybe 50 phone calls
(Wednesday) morning for tickets (after
the Daily Pilot broke the story about the
Palisades hosting the Davis Cup),• said
Ken Stuart, Palisades owner and oper,--
tor, who was asked by Davis Cup officiAls
Jan. 27 to reserve the aforementioned
dates for the second round.
An official announcement by the
International Tennis Federation that Pal-
isades Tennis Club will host the second
round against The Netherlands is expect·
ed this week.
The Netherlands defeated Romania,
3-2, after an 0-2 deficit. In one of the most
dramatic wins in Davis Cup history, Jan
Siemerink of The Netherlands beat Adri-
an Voinea, 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6
(10-8), 6-4, in a fourth-round match last-
ing 4:30.
In the decisive match, Paul Haarhuis
\I I '.\ I '\ <, I I I I'
defeated Andrei Pavel in straight sets, as
Holland and the U.S. were the only two
countries to win on the road in the first
round.
It also sounds like a good time to know
a club member, because Stuart, in a ges-
ture of appreciation, will offer a one-
week window for Palisades members to
purchase tickets before they go on Sale to
the public. .
•TIUs thing will sell out so fast, I think
in the first hour all 15,000 seats will be
gone.• said Stuart, referring to three
days' action with an estimated 5,000-seat
capacity at a revamped Palisades Club.
No club official, including Stuart, has
any control over when tickets will go on
sale, or its prices. The ITF will dictate
tickets and its prices.
O.n Wednesd4y, ITF offidall are
expected to send the club general guide-
lines and ticket information, Stuart said.
•So I'll know Wednesday whEhi my
members get that window,• Stuart said.
·1 want my members to know they're
very special, and every day ts geared
toward making members feel sped.al. To
me, this is as special as'it gets.•
The Palisades Club reportedly is
receiving no site fee tor hosting the Davis
Cup, which often pays a compensation to
facilities.
What Stuart reportedly requested in
return from Davis Cup offi.ciAls, instead,
was tor his members to benefit by getting
first crack at tickets.
On Sunday, 15 to 20 members were
glued to the television in the club's new-
ly renovated lounge for the final day ot
Davis Cup action, in which most felt

Fittingly, Courier's victory cable down
to a tiebrea.k in the fourth set, in which
Courier, 26, once the world's top-ranked
singles player, needed five match points
to beat Kuerten, who wouldn't give an
inch until biJ unforced error ended it.
"For these Brazilian players, the Davis
Cup is bigger than any other tourna-
ment," ESPN color commentator Patrick
McEnroe said. "For them, it's bigger than
the French Open and Wimbledon. (In
terms of crowd response), every p0int
they win, it's like th~y've won a tourna-
ment.•
Courier served three aces in the
tiebreak, the last coming at g.9 to give
him a fourth match point.
It was more than the drama ot country
versus country that inspired the crowd,
but solid, strategic tennis by Courier and
Kuerten. Much of the same is expected
here.
"Since the match ended, I've had 10
phone calls already from people about
how to get tickets,• Palisades court direc-
tor Phil Noetzel said.

By Ji m Walters, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -Even the Newport

but it was the Sailors who did
them one better on that score.
Jason Deere earned his third
straight league heavyweight title
while his best friend and fellow
senior, Matt Large, picked up his
second crown by winning the

"I'm kind of proud of
what we did, but I'd be
prouder if we wvn
today."
"I'm pretty satisfied
with everything right
now," Deere said while
still dripping sweat from
the final match of the
meet.
"1bis means a whole
lot to me,• he said. "I was
able to do what I set out to do at
the beginning of the season and
we won a league championship."
Corona del Mar won't have
anybody advancing to CIF this
year, but the Sea Kings have
three wrestlers standing by as
alternates in case a spot opens in
the draw. The Vanguards hit 6 of 8 free

In an interesting scoring twist
the Sailors also gained a share of
their first Sea View League team
championship along with a resur-
rected host Irvine.
Just five short days ago the
Sailors were in despair, thinking
they had lost a chance at a league
title after falling in a battle of
unbeatens with Santa Margarita
in the final dual meet of the sea-
son .
Sophomore Brad Llm stepped
into Large's shoes to claim the
103-pound title this year. The oth-
er Sailor champions included:
119-pound senior Rigo Pinon,
who finished second last season;
senior Emmett Olivera (152); and
surprising sophomore Jeremy
Munoz, whose 31-21 decision in
the 171-pound title match moved
Newport ahead of El Toro in the
team standings and clinched the
Sea View League team champi-
onship.
Fourth-place finishers for CdM
included: Brian Kramer (140);
Sam Lingawi (160); and Scott
Flatten at heavyweight.
Another "local," Newport
Beach's Ryan Best of Santa Mar-
garita High, qualified for CIF with
a runnerup finish at 130.
•I'm disappointed right now,

Bill Reynolds has
out-recruited "Tark the Shark," ta.ken
his team to the "Sweet 16" in the
NAIA National Tournament and
averaged more than 20 wins a season
-every season -as a walk-on coach.
As the years roll by the accolades
continue to cascade down with each
major milestone. Last season, Reynolds
joined a select group of coaches by
passing the 300-win plateau. He was
also chosen Coach of the Year in the
Golden State Athletic Conference for
an unprecedented fifth time.
While there is plenty of evidence in
the sec record books to document
Reynolds' influence on the game, his
crowning achievement may well be the
numerous former players and assistants
who are scattered throughout the
coaching ranks across Orange County.
"I don't know how much influence I
might have had except to offer another
frame of reference," Reynolds said.
"I'm proud to have even a small part in
their growth."
While Reynolds downplays his role,
he's the only one.
• Larry Hint. the second-year head
man with the Newport Harbor High
boys basketball team is a 1984 sec
grad and was the starting center for
the Vanguards.
"Coach R was the most influential
person in my life, as a coach and part
surrogate father," Hirst said. "I can't
speak for all players, but while you're
there playing you respect his ability for
Xs and Os and for motivation.
"However, I remember thinking if I
ever had the chance I would do things
differently, bu't I do them the same way
-probably even say the same words.
"You don't realize the affect until 5,
10 years later.•
"Larry was there the first year 1
came to SCC," Reynolds said. "He was
a four-year starter.
"No one really wanted him out of
high school, but he had these long
arms and played within his own limits.
He has the mentality of an educator
and coaches are educators. He's a
wonderful success."
Hirst took an unheralded Edison
High boys team to the CIF Southern
Section Finals in 1994 and nearly beat
Mater Dei, which finally pulled out a
five-point win. Edison had to win a
playoff game to earn a wild-card bid
and a spot into the playoffs.
"Mater Dei was No. 3 in the nation
at the time,• Reynolds said. "It was the
closest game Mater Dei had against
any team.
"That speaks a lot for Larry'w ability
to get the most out of his players. J
think we'll hear a lot more from him at
Newport Harbor.•
•Todd Dixon is another favorite.
"He's like a son to us," Reynolds
said. "In the mold of a Larry Hirst. He
grew up with the program.•
A three-year starter with the
Vanguards, Dixon was a two-time
All-GSAC and District 3 pick. After two
years as an sec assistant, he's leading
a resurgent El ToIO High boys team
that's off to a 16-8 start in bis first year
as the head coach.
"When he first came to sec we
basically tried to discourage him from
playing," Reynolds said. "He had been
a backup point guard at Ocean View
who never played. He was 18 or 19,
but looked 14. I thought he was a hi~h
school sophomore.•
Dixon was labeled "can't shoot,
can't dribble." Not ·exactly glowing
praise for the guy who is supposed to
lead the offense. Dixon played on
SCC's JV team (1985-86, the last year
of an SCC JV). He worked his way on
to the varsity the following season and
was a starter by the midway point. In
his second varsity game, Dix.on scored
26 points against Loyola Marymount
during the Llons' Hank Gathers and
Bo Kimble era.
"He's a quiet competitor," Reynolds
said. "If you tell him he ean't do
something, he will prove you wrong.
El Toro has a great find there."
0
Hint's and Dtxon'a teams are
Sea View League rivals. They played
recently for the first time with Newport
winning, 55-52.
"1 coached Todd as a N player and
was an assistant coach when he was on
vamty," Hirst said. "That was a real
tough game. Jt was strange to be
coaching against him. We both do a lot
of the same things, but that's what you
get from Coach R players. He teaches
you to be adaptable."
• John Mounce, another SCC grad,
is an assistant under Hirst, coaching
the Sailor JV. He came out of the Mater
Dei program as a player and an
assistant coach.
"He was not blessed with a lot of
talents, but he was a coach on the floor
even as a player," Reynolds said. "He
became a point guard through attrition
in the eighth game of bis senior year
and led us to the second round in the
1990 NAIA Tournament.•
Mounce was the only player on the
Mater Dei championship team his
senior year who didn't get a
scholarship, but he was also the only
one from the team to still be playing
four years later.
•He was wonderful to have
around," Reynolds said.
• Andre Smith, a former Reynolds'
player and JV coach at Costa Mesa
High, is in his second year at San
Bernardino. ·
"He could flat out shoot the ball
from the perimeter, the baseline,"
Reynolds said. "When we recruited
him, I thought we were barking up the
wrong tree. I didn't think we would get
him."
Reynolds remembers he was sitting
in the basketball office of Fullerton
College waiting for Smith to sign a
letter of intent, but Smith had to take
a phone call first.
"The coach told me later it had been
Jerry Tarkanian," Reynolds said.
"This was during the mid-1980s and
Tarkanian's UNLV teams were at the
top of the national rankings. I didn't
know at the time. J guess I should tell
more recruits about that one."
Smith got off the phone and signed
with sec.
"He said he wanted to play,•
Reynolds said. "He would have had
a chance at a national championship,
but he wasn't sure how much time he
would have seen.
·He's been coaching ever since he
graduated. He was a coach even before
be graduated."
• Roger Holmes is in his third year
with the Marina High boys team who
started the season 14-5.
"Roger the Dodger,• Reynolds said.
"He never played for me, but I wish he
had. He was a Division I player at
Long Beach State until he blew out a
knee.
"He coached with us."
Holmes is also Dixon's
brother-in-law.
"He was the first coach in the Santa
Margarita program,• Reynolds said.
"He's doing an outstanding job with
Marina. He has brought a lot Qf
maturity to the program."
• Mike Murphy is the boys hoops
coach at Sonora High. The Raiders
started the season 16·1 and were the
No. 2 team in Orange County in the
recent polls.

"I can relate to Murph," Reynolds
said. "l was the 13th guy on a 12·man
team.
"Bless his heart. He was on the team
when I came here. He's a fireplug. He
plays with such competitiveness. The
Sonora team has his quality.
·we're recruiting three of his
players. Murph says they're SCC guys.
That's something all these programs
have in common. We know we will
have some fine basketball players and
fine human beings.·
• Billy Brewer, a former coach at
Costa Mesa High, is now about as
outside of Orange County as you can
get at Brawley High. To put that in
perspective, directions provided in a
CIF directory say take the I· 10 east to
Indio, to Highway 86 and go south 75
miles.
Brewer coached the girls team
before becoming the school's athletic
director this season.
"Another real dynamo," Reynolds
said. "He could take teams with
minimum talent and get the best out
of them.•
• Eibert Davi.a is an assistant coach
with Mike McClusky at Golden West
College.
"He was the No. 2-rated point guard
coming out of Golden West averaging
9.5 assists," Reynolds said. "He's as
quick as they come. We think we run
a little bit now, but it's nothing like we
used to with Elbert."
• owe Marttn, the current assistant
coach with SCC's women's team, got
his coaching start when Reynolds hired
him to lead his sophomore team at
Bolsa Grande High. Martin also played
on the first team Reynolds ever
coached.
"H-e played on my very first team at
La Quinta back in 1963, pre.freshman
ball,• Reynolds said. •He suffered
through my neophyte yea.rs. U I was
smart enough, or experienced enough,
I would have pushed him to go
Division I.
"He was an outstanding player. He
set a single-game scoring record at
Chapman with 39 points in a game.•
• Sherwin Durham. the Vanguard
women's other assistant coach, is
another Bolsa Grande High grad who
played ball for sec.
wHe's probably the most gifted point
guard 1 ever coached," Reynolds said.
"He had an elegance and grace to be a
Division 1 player, but he happened to
be at an NAIA school.
"If his work schedule permitted.
he'd probably be one of our varsity
assistants .•
Durham, who works at the Garden
Grove Boys and Girls Club, is a former
Harlem Globetrotter and member of
Meadowlark Lemon's Shooting Stars.
• Robert "Pepe• Aviles is athletic
director and coach at Whittier Christian
High.
"He was a point guard at the same
time Sherwin was here," Reynolds.
"He was a backup a couple of years
and then started his senior year.
"He's doing an excellent job at
Whittier Christian.•
• Randy McAlllster, who coached
with Hirst at Edison, is coaching in the
Rancho Verde High program in
Moreno Valley.
"Dandy Randy is another fine
player,• Reynolds said. "He could be
coaching varsity, but didn't want to
give up as much of his family life. It
takes a lot of time.
"He has the type of competitiveness
you want to keep around.•
0
lbree othen wbo didn't play or
coach for Reynolds, but still carry an
SCC flavor are Pat Ou1nn. in his
second year with the Woodbridge
High girls after many years at
Saddlebac.k High. Rod Markum at
Capistrano Valley Christian and
Paul Anderson. who was SCC's last
All·American back in 1979-80.
After coaching 20 years at
Saddleback High, Quinn led the
Woodbridge High girls team to the
State Champfonship last season in his
first year at the helm. The Warriors are
again in the top ranks this season at
No. 3 in Orange County.
Markum was in the JV program.
·All of his best buddies were on the
team," Reynolds said. "He hung
around and watched a lot. A true
student of the game.
"His assistant, Mike Henjum, was
a three-year starter for us -two years
All·GSAC."
Anderson graduated from sec the
year before Reynolds came on board,
but he left an indelible mark on the
coach's psyche.
"He was my first introduction to
NAIA basketball, "1 Reyno!~ said. "The
best pl.ayer 1 ever saw. He was a draft
pick of the (then) San Diego Clippers."
Anderson broke an ankle in a
pre-draft NBA camp, ending his
playing career.
"He was a 6-3 guy with great
mobility from Corona del Mar High,•
Reynolds said. "Nonstop motion."
Anderson wasn't recruited out of
high school, spending one year at
Orange Coast College before walking
on at sec where he became a
three·year starter and two-time
All-American second-teamer. He's a
longtime coach. currently at Santiago.
0
"This IUl'e conjured up a lot of
great memories tor me," Reynolds said.
·rm sure there are others out there,
but this covers 90% of them.
"Being a walk-on coach, this could
have been a very difficult situation,
but when you are SUJTOunded by great
people, it's real easy. These young men
are the epitome.
"The best part of the fellows you
have described is I consider them my
friends. I'm not just a mentor, but we're
good tri0J\ds. It's kind of a family affair
at sec.·
