itator from the Human Relations Council
of Orange County said Thursday.
But students and parents were quick
to say there is no overt racial tension at
the school, which is about 75% white and
about 20% Latino.
"I think students have a lot of work to
do,· said Renee Rodriguez, who led sev-
eral forums Wednesday and Thursday as
part of the school's third annual Unity
Week celebration.
Some Latino students at the school do
not feel completely accepted, and stereo-
types exist on both sides, Rodrigue'z
added.
•1 think if there is a problem, it's all

school's student representative on the
Newport-:Mesa school board.
But Craig also said that, though he
thinks the majority of students are toler-

races and cultures do not mix much at the
school. •u the question is, Do we interact as

Started by parents at Ensign Interme-

series of forums, speeches and salsa par-

She was fU'St called to the school last

was, they all were on the saill0 weekend.
"Since the film hadn't screened any-
where yet, I wanted to go to all of
them,· he said ·
So Fraser, "Next Time" composer
James S. Mullhollan Jr., and the film's
producer, Mark Vega, packed up their
gear and headed to Los Angeles to start
their long journey.
It was just the beginning of a whirl-
wind tour of festivals across the country.
The film was a success at the 280-
seat theater in Hollywood on that Friday
night in August. With but a few hours to
revel in their achievement, they·flew to
San Francisco on Saturday morning,
drove to Sonoma, and showed the film
at that film festival.

Fraser's trip was just beginning.
"Since we had premiered in both
New York and I.:.A., • Fraser said, "it
opened it up to any other festivals that
wanted it. And that's when a whole
series of f~vals came in a row, starting
with the Kudzu Film Festival in Athens,
Ga. So I said, 'Let's go,' and I did about
8,000 miles including <>ne plane bight."
After three red-eyes in a row, driving
and schmoozing, Fraser left for the sec-
ond leg of the journey, this time solo, in
his truck/van conversion.
"Ai. soon as these dates came up, I
bad· to IJlake them all fit because there
was only one copy of the film,• Fraser
said. His inheritance money had run,out
after making the film~ and the cost of
copying a feature-length film can run
into the millions, which wasn't in his
meager budget.
From his home base in Long Beach,
he traveled from Athens to New
Orleans to Marco lslaild. Fla., where the
film arrived a day late.
•1t was scary,• he said. "I couldn't
decide il I was going to cany the film, or
U l was going to tend it overnight."
Going with the latter, he arrived ln
Florida expecting to find the film bad

"Sure enough, 1 arrived and the film
hadn't, thanks to UPS," he said. "I pan-
icked, but luckily it got there (one hourj
before it screened.•
Washing his· hands of that fiasco,
Fraser was off to festivals in North
Hampton, Mass., Chicago and St. Louis.
Fraser also sent the film to the Ohio
Internatiqnal Film Festival, but he didn't
accompany it. .
•Tue trip was crazy. J would crash out
behind a truck stop," he said, "only to
wake up the next morning to hit the
road again. It was like a dream, because
I didn't have time to sit and think about
what was happening. The movie was
playing in an hour, so I of course had to
worry about that, then I would have a Q
and A afterward, and then go some-
where else to do it all over. It was like a
wave that kept going until I got home."
Fraser and his film received acco-
lades everywhere they went.
"The reception was tremendous.
Everywhere the film played, people
really .responded to it in a different way.
"It's an issue-oriented piece, and for
some people that doesn't work. It's not
what some consider a 'date-night'
movie.·
Some audiences classify the film as a
play that was filmed because it ta1ces
place in one location.
"If audiences can watch two people

responses about Goldberg warn
traders about his activity and
promise to press charges against
him. '
"I don't IQiow if he realizes it,

Said another alleged victim: "I

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. These are
common issues for families
searching (and soul searching) to
make the best choice of care for their
elderly love one. Many get
frustrated that when they choose a
large facility and give up some of the
personal touch. Others choose a
small home and give up the
confidence inspired by a
professional care management team.
DON'T PEAR 1HE WRONG

COSTA MESA -The
California Integrated Waste
Management Board has rec-
ognized the city for exceed-
ing the state requirement to
reduce the amount of
garbage going lo landfills.
The Integrated Waste
Man~gement Act, otherwise
known as Assembly Bill 939,
was e nacted in 1990 and
requires cities to divert 50~ ..
of their waste from landfills
by 2000. Costa Mesa has
complied with the interim
diversion rate of 25% for the
year 1995,
The Waste Board verified
Costa Mesa's recycling rates
for 1995 and 1996 and rec-
ognized it for mee ting the
25% goal. Failure to comply
with th~ law means a city
could face fines of up to
$10,000 per day.
The city continues to get
closer to the 50% goal In
1998, the city's trash
haulers' diversion rates
ranged from 23% to more
than 40%, for an overall
compliance rate of 33%.
When combined with the
Sanitary Distnct's rate, the
city's overall compliance
rate is 40%.
The state board did not
hnish anal~ing Costa
Mesa's statistics until now I
because there is a lapse in
time before cities are
required to report them
According to a review of 273
cities this year, 56 have met
or surpassed the 50% mark
for 2000. The waste board
expects to complete the
review of 53 1 cities and
counties later this year.

Many answered they felt com-

while in class, but one they left,
they formed into cliques and did
not mix with each other.
"There are no borders in this
school,• said Junior Eddie Rios,
~esttitirtg to tbe multiraoal group
he was eating lunch with.
But he added that ·racial slurs
were nQl unheard of.
•Someone called me a stupid

The city stalf has developed
dnd analyzed. three alternatives.
The one with the most effects

from Orange Avenue to Irvine
Avenue The median would pre-
vent vehicles from turning left
directly into the driveways of
busmesses, and would instead

also said h~ has sometimes felt
uncomfortable fn Newport

friends.
Craig added that he thinks stu-
dents at Newport Harbor are
more tolerant than at Corona del
Mar High School, which has a
much less dive~e student poiJula-
tion and which Craig used to
attend. ·
"They don't mix as much as we
would like them to," said Angela
Newman, the school's only
African American teachet. "But
the question that comes to my
mind is, is it economic? ls. it geo-
Jt also would result in the loss
of 99 parking spaces and 34,500
square feet of private property,
the most of the three alternatives.
However, the alternative provides
the most landscaping for the
street, which could lose between
31,500 square feet to 41 ,700
square feet of landscaping
because of the project.
A second alternative does not
have raised medians at all, and a
third altematJve incorporates
some raised medians. Both of
those alternatives would result in
less Joss of parking spaces, land-
scaping and private property.
Staff is recommending a bal-
ance between the ~ternatives,
incorporating the landscaping of
the first alternative with the low
effect on private property of the
other two.
After the public hearings,
$400,000 would be needed to
design the prOJect and study its
effects on the environment.

Pair attorney Mark Kemple
said Judge Robert Thomas' deci-
sion abbut the court costs was fair
and reasonable.
"The judge awarded us every
penny incurred in connection
with the intervenets' depositions
and costs,• he said.
The women's attorney, Richard
Spix, said that although he would
have liked a "giant goose egg" -
a ruling requ.irtng Brown and
Lusk to pay nothing -he was
pleased the two will pay only
10% of the total court costs.
According to the judge's order,
•The settlement agreement pro-
vided that each side was to bear
its own costs and fees. This provi-
sion of the settlement agreement
covers all costs and fees up to the
time that the settlement was
placed on the record."

her Latino students have said
they feel "picked on• because of
their race.
"But others say no, they don't
feel like that at all,• she said. "It's
deeper than just a racial problem.
I think it's a cop-out to say it's
. racial. I'm not saying there's no
racism, but I think it's so much
more cultural than it is racist."
Students, parents and teachers

the need to keep talking.

Spix said he is encouraged by
the most recent development.
"I can tell you in one of their
briefs, the fair's attorneys estimat-
ed their time spent from June 8
forward was $60,000," he said.
The latest ruling was a good
sign that his clients' share of the
attorneys fees will be less than
that, he said.

Spi:x has characterized the
fair's attempt to collect the fees as
a tool of intimidation.
Kemple said the fair just wants
litigation to stop.
The next briefing will be in
May. The judge will render bis
decision about attorneys fees
after that.

So after family commitments
pro;;fpted her 1995 resignation,
following six remarkably
successful seasons as Newport
Harbor High girls basketball
coach. it wasn't long before the
daughter of Basketball Hall of
Farner Ralph Miller was once
again patrolling the sideline,
passing on the fundamentals
learned at the knee of the
college coaching legend.
She spent the 1996-97 season
as a volunteer assistant at
Concordia University, before
founding the California
Academy of Women's Basketball
in March of '97.
The nonprofit club program
-a virtual oxymoron in the
exploitation-ridden world of
elite competition for prospectiye
college players -provided
Jakosky the ideal opportunity to
wedge her passion for coaching
between the demands or bemg
a full-time mother to the three
children she bore while coaching
at Newport.
Currently preparing to lead
the Academy's three 10-player
teams into their third club
season, Jakosky relishes the role
of refining the on-and off-court
acumen of her players (grades
9-12). many of.whom will land
college scholarships.
•My focus is to help as many
players as we can every year,~
said Jakosky. believed to be the
only woman running a nonprofit
club program in the United
States. The Academy's $80,000
annual budget is subsidized
primarily by corporate sponsors.
·Our mission is to help
players who are athletically
gifted, academically motivated
and economically challenged.
When people hear we're a
nonprofit club, they usually
wonder 'Aie you for real?' But
we do what we say we're going
to do. We had 38 players try out
for our three teams last year and
this year we had 70. •
Skill development is the
primary focus, but winning has
become a byproduct for
Academy teams, who have
drawn players from throughout
Southland, as well as Kansas
and Nevada. Last year's
Academy I team finished runth
among 84 teams at the under-17
national tournament in
Indianapolis.
Success seems to follow the
39-year-old Newport Beach
resident. who played on a state
championship prep basketball
team in Oregon, before
becoming the first Oregon State
University athlete (male or
female) to earn three varsity
letters (basketball volleyball
