Looking for acceptance
• Musician's hope to
open restawant, nightclub
in Cannery Village binges
onjudges'decision.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
CANNERY VlLLAGE -
Mark Wood has been trying for
almost two years to open a place
where people can come to hear
a little music, get a bite to eat,
maybe have a drink or two.
But the 40-year-old Newport
Beach musician's quest to get a
liquor license for bis place has
been a sobering experience. He
leased the old Cafe Udo site on
30th Street in September 1995,
applied for the license a month
later -and has yet to open
what he has dubbed, the Hide
Out.
"We thought it would take
about three months," he said
with a laugh.
The vice president of the
Newport Elementary PTA has
found himself in the middle of a
crackdown on crime and drunk-
enness in Cannery Village.
Those who live among the vil-
lage's bars, restaurants and
shops say the area can't handle
any more liquor sellers, regard-
less of who those sellers are.
The state department of
Alcoholic Beverage Control first
denied his application after 39
village residents protested.
MARC MARTIN I DAILY PILOT
Mark Wood has been trying for a year and a half to re-open
the old Cafe Udo -as The Hide Out -but has been unable
to acquire a liquor license. ·
Wood then appealed to an
administrative law judge, whose
recommendation will guide the
department in changing or reaf-
firming its denial.
"We feel some closure with
the hearings being over,• Wood
said. •Now we just have to
wa:it."
Officials expect a decision
within about a week, followed
by a 30-day appeal period,
department spokesman Carl
DeWing said. Residents have
said they'll appeal the decision
if it comes down in Wood's favor.
Wood has the city licenses he
needs and is ready to open with-
in weeks if he gets the go-
ahead from the state. "We could
open right now," he said.
He promises a 175-seat place
that would open at 5 p.m., offer-
ing live entertainment and serv-
ing •just marvelous" fish and
pasta recipes. The liquor, he
swears, would be incidental.
•It's not going to be one of
those hopping from place-to-
place type atmospheres," he
said.
The state considers the con-
centration of alcohol licenses in
an area as well as the crime rate
when it rules on liquor license
applications, DeWing said. It
also weighs testimony from resi-
dents and police.
The Newport Beach Police
Department originally protested
Wood's application but said it
would withdraw its protest if be
met certain conditions. Those
conditions, along with those on
the city's licenses, make for a list
of 28 stipulations, Wood said.
For example: He must close
by midnight during the week, 1
a.m . on weekends. He can't
serve liquor in glass containers
larger than 12 ounces. A seC\lri-
ty guard must stand in the park-
ing lot while music p!4ys. The
city can revoke his permits if the
live music can be heard from off
his property.
"They're tough,• Wood said.
HBut we have signed off and
said we will abide by these."
If Wood doesn't get state
approval, he said he likely won't
pursue bis club plans further. He
doesn't want to open without
the license, simply because he
knows he wouldn't cause trou-
ble, he said.
But he remains confident that
he'll win this round.
"We in our hearts know
we're going to open a good
operation," he said. •Tue timing
was just bad."

NEWPORT BBACH -Local

Massage therapists have
banded together in the past to
oppose city regulation.5 and fee
increases.
In 1993, officials restricted
massage businesses to certain
areas in the dty. In 1994, city offi-

massage businesses. In 1996, they
increased the required hours of

adjustments in all dty depart-

That brings costs for individual
therapists to $741 per year and for
massage business operators to
$914 per year. A total of 201 ther-
apists and operators hold city
massage licenses.
City officials increased the fee
to recover 100% of the costs of
licensing -including enforcing
ordinances aimed at prostitution-

minded golfers following their
tee shots were seduced by
sounds of extraordinarily beauti-
ful music. When they looked
across the canyon that borders
the golf course, they saw a
large, enthusiastic group of peo-
ple overflowing a back yard and
making the music. And they
stopped in growing numbers to
watch and listen.

•Mr. Holland's Opus H -last
year's unexpected movie hit
about a gifted and dedicated
music teacher.
Our Mr. Holland is named
Harlan Anderson, and the bash
last summer was a tribute from
dozens of his former students
who gathered at his home to
thank him for the music he gave
to them-music they have car-
ried not only in their hearts but
literally all over the world.
It is some measure of the
respect they hold for him that no
matter their age or stature in
lite, his students still call him
M Mr. A." The party they threw
for him last summer was partly
the result of the movie's mes-
sage and partly the awareness
that Harland Anderson's health
was failing visibly. Seeing and
hearing his students again
would be just what the doctor
might order.
Harlan Anderson had been
diagnosed 12 years earlier -
after retiring as principal of San-
ta Ana High School -with
prostate cancer. He chose not to
have swgery and, ·after a period
of radiation and chemotherapy,
had to give up directing the

He didn't want his former

so the virtual open house be and

instead, a retreat for Mr. A. Only
after seeing "Mr. Holland's

a fine Corona del Mar pianist
named Sheri Morrison-Finnegan
-track him down.
"He was so excited," recalls
Morrison-Finnegan. "He said to
me, 'Bring back my kids', and
more than 40 of them came. He
sat in a chair and slipped right
into his old role of directing the
music. And there were so many
fine musicians to direct."
Most of them had once
belonged to a group at Santa
Ana High called Debutantes
and Esquires that had been
formed in the 1940s but was
moribund when Harlan arrived
on the scene. He got there by
indirection. He had enlisted in

After World Warn, he earned
an masters degree in music

at Occidental College, where he
met and married Louise. He was
teaching sixth grade in Santa
Ana when the high school prin-
cipal noticed his music back-

need in that area. The rest -as
bis students would happily testi-
fy -is history.
For more than a decade after
he took over, ma.king the Debu-
tantes and Esquires was the
thing to do at Santa Ana High,
hotter -several of his students
assured me -even than foot-
ball. (Diane Keaton was one of
the early members of the
group.)
"He was more than a
teacher," one of them recalled.
"He was a mentor to us. But not
our best friend. He was always a
professional, very much respect-
ed. He was our example of what
to strive for. H
When he left music tea~g
to finish his educational career
as principal of Santa Ana High,
Harlan continued to give private
lessons and direct his church
choirs -and that's how he met
Michel Bell, who is stopping the
show nightly at the Ahmanson
Theater singing "01' Man Riv-
er" in Showboat.
Bell, newly moved to Santa
Ana, had beard about Harlan
and was quickly accepted for
his choir. When he told Harlan
two years later that be was
going to New York to audition
for "Porgy and Bess," Bell won-
dered aloud if his voice )Vas
good enough -and Harlan
assured him it was.
Three weeks ago, Michel
Bell, told about Harlan's fragile
health, arranged for Harlan and
Louise and their entire family -
including two sons, a daugbtat -
and their spouses (but not the
seven grandchildren) -to lee •
Showboat matinee from the 18C-
ond row. Harlan, says bis wile,
"was like a little kid. Beside
himself. Couldn't wait.•
The family hired a limousiP'!,
partied all the way to Los Ang&-
ie5, and half-carried Harlan into
tlie theater. When Michel Bell
reprised "01' Man River•, be
sang it directly to Harlan. When
he took his curtain call, he
walked to the edge of the stage
and applauded Harlan. Then be
met and visited with Harlan
after the show and, says Louise,
"Harlan went home with a real
smile we hadn't seen for
awhile."
1Wo days later, Harlan
Anderson died in his sleep.
His students provided a cor-
nucopia of magnificent choral
music at his funeral. Then, at
the end of the service, all the
former Debutantes and Esquires
were invited to come forward
and sing their signature song, "I
Believe.·
Mil's a hard song without a
director," says Sheri Morrison-
Finnegan, "but we instinctively
positioned ourselves. He would
have been very proud."
She paused. "You know,
there's a piece of Harlan every
time I sit down to the piano. And
the same thing is true when any
one of bis students perf onns."
Michel Bell would agree. H~
wrote in Harlan's Showboat pro-

Artists (7-15, 2-7) cling to their upset hopes.
•Laguna ~ach has been known to upset a few
tea.ms and 1 told our girls if they weren't ready to
play, it could happen again,• Kirby explained. ·we
were up, 24-18, at half, but I thought they had out-
played us.•
The Eagles put together second-quarter runs of
8-2 and 6-0, however, to earn the Ullennission edge,
then answered four straight points by the Artists to
open the third with a 12-0 run to all but salt away the
triwnph.
Five different players scored dunng the last out-
burst, which included a three-pomt play by Jill
Black and a three-pointer by Vivi Rodriguez.
Laguna Beach, coached by former CdM High
boys assistant Greg Marshall, strung together nine
unanswered points in the fourth penod to pull to
within 40-33. But Black made four foul shots and
Megan McCartin, perhaps the hosts' unsung hero,
drained two more from the line in the final 1 :04 to
put the Eagles with.in a Thursday victory over Uni-
versity of a runner-up finish behind two-ti.me cham-
pion Laguna Hills.
McCartin finished with six points and five
rebounds, but ran the offense effectively and
defended tenaciously against Artists' leading scorer
April Chambers.
Chambers tied her twin sister Chrissy with a
game-high 12 pqints, but made just 5 of 22 field-goal
attempts.
Jennifer McCartin, whose return seven games
ago has coincided -not so coincidentally -with
the Eagles resurgence, matched Black (9 of 11 at the
line) for team-high scoring honors with t 1 points,
while Rodrlguez added nine.
Estancia made 17 of 22 foul shots.
