Movies, books
prjorities for
sports agent
• EDrrolt'S NOTE: We asked top
sports agent Leigh Steinberg, who
turns SO Saturday and was honored
with a humanitarian award from
the county's Human Relations Com-
mission on Sunday, a few questions
about money. happiness and hit·
ting the half-<entury mark.
Do you think athletes
make too much money?
If we lived in a utopia,
scboolt~achers, nurses and a
whole series of professionals
ought to be maximally com-
pensated. But that's not the
nature of the free enterpnse
system, which is supply and
demand.
Do you think you make
too much money?
When we reached $1,000
per year,.I thought we made
too much money. All I care
about is having enough mon-
ey to go to the movies and
buy hardcover books at
Barnes & Noble.
Are you a man who has
everything?
I have wonderful wife,
wonderful family, wonderful
friends and wonderful clients,
and that's everything to me.
What's th• one thing you
don't have that you want?
The preservation of the
tropical rain fore st.
There's got to be some-
thing material that you don't
have, but want.
Material thing? What I
asked for my birthday were
white tennis shoes, jogging
shorts and sweatshirts.

Tradition keeps Nick's
Italian Restaurant and Pizza
going strong despite
Harbor Center construction
STORY BY EUSE GEE
PHOTOS BY MARC MAITIN Nick, right, and Joe Fodera have kept their business open duril}g construction at Har-
bor Center in Costa Mesa. Only two other businesses in the center have remained open.
As they've done for the past 31 years, the
Fodera family continues to bake pizzas,
roll meatballs and tew sauces at Nick's
Italian Restaurant and Pizza while bulldoz-
ers tear down buildings and workers lay
down bricks at Harbor Center m Costa
Mesa.
Just as they've done for the last 31 years,
the customers keep conung.
While other tenants have left and the
shopping center has deteriorated around
them, Nick. Lisa, Joe and Jennifer Fodera
have maintained a thriving family business.
The payoff looks like it's right ~round the
comer.
•The construction doesn't bother us
here," said Joe. "We know where it's going.
We have to go through the ugly stage."
As soon as the shopping center is fin-
ished at the end or the year, Nick's Pizza will
move from its stronghold in the back or the
center to a bigger more visible location in
the front.
Joe said not only lS he looking forward to
being able to serve tus loyal customers in a
more spaaous location that will offer patio
dining, but he's also anticipating building ~
new clientele.
•Tue future looks bnght, • Joe said. •rm
happy for the shoppmg center.•
Both Joe, 31, and Nick, 60, expressed
their appreciation for developer Scott Bell
who, they said, Crom the
beginning pledged to
keep the landmark
restaurant in the center.
• 1 got my heart
here," said Nick. •1
remember when I was
younger than my son I
was singing and
screaming in here all
day.•
They've been cunng their
own olives, making their own
anchovies and stewing their
own marinara sauce from
scratch for generations
Joe, who was 2 yedfS old
when his father opened the
restaurant, remembers grow-
ing up behind the counter.
In the 90s business
dropped significantly due to
mismanagement, they said.
Gone were the days when
the center was packed and the
restaurant could sell pizza by
the slices out in the courtyard.
There were many times the
family considered moving, Joe
said. They were about to con-
sider a move to the Mesa
Verde Center when Bell
appeared.
The image .iG not
hard to imagine.
Although most of the
operations have fallen
to Joe, a robust and
jovial Nick still plays an
inte~al part in the
restaurant. He grows
fresh organic vegeta-
bles -dandelions, wild
broccoli, and borani -
at lus ranch in Temecula
for use in the restau-
rant's dishes.
It's those ingredients
and quality dishes that
Construction at Harbor
Center ls expected to last
about a year.
Now they are grateful they
stayed. and are detemuned to
stay open for both their cus-
t ers and employees The
keep the restaurant packed at dinnertime,
despite the chaos outside in the park.mg lot
Homemade ravioli, grilled fish and Futura
Pizza are some of the dishes served.
The Foderas know about constancy.

•Don't worry, I'm still here,· Nick says to
them ·we don't go nowhere.•
"We'll be here another 20 years." Joe

"Ultimately) cheaters are the ones who get cheated
S ome Newport Harbor High
students are tired of 411 of
the cheating that is going ~>n the~. We know it is happen-
ing at every school. Apparently,
programmable calculators are
very fine storage bins for test
information, and you don't even
have to pull up your sleeve.
Of course, test information
storage methods, whether they
are on a water bottle or in a cal-
culator, don't work as well on the
AP tests, SAT college entrance
exams, or SAT-9 tests. So, once
again, the students that cheat are
the ones who ultimately get
cheated. ·
I just wish parents and teach-
ers would be a little more vigi-
lant. I also suggest an anony-
mous cheater reporting box be
placed at each school. It will lead
to a lot of innocents being report-
ed, but the thought that a stu-
dent might be •narced off" might

or teachers believe that they
have to portray our nation's
heroes as perfect with only good
intentions.
It makes kids, who know that
they make mistakes, think they
can never rise to that level. It is
also a mistake to exclude from
heroism those who were not our
country's leaders.
Some of my favorite heroes
don't have names in the history
books; they only have the faces
that my imagination gives them.
My favorites are those who were
willing to face terrible adversity
to do what was right for their
family. Many of those persons

year's track season. One parent
told me the reason that the CdM

that you get what you expect in
public schools.
CdM parents aren't willing to
setUe for second-best, so they
lobby the School Board, they
solicit businesses, ~d they reach
into their own pockets. It took a
lot of pockets to come up with
the funds for the track, arid a lot
of vigilance to make it appear on
time.
It gave the students the ulti~

"lt's the challenge to be
competitive," said Millard
"It's helping kids, it's the
camaraderie, it's raising hell with
them, it's teaching baseball ... the

young, even when you lose some
of the battles.•
With a Manne Corps-Jeswt

toughness required and hitting is
such a tough thing to do. And of
course, the name of the game is

you're in the game."
Millard's Journey from college

Partner opens the b1dd1ng with one
no trump. Whnt do you bid now?
A -You certainly want to be m
eame. However, your ruffing value
m spades suggests thaL. if partner. has a four-card or longer heart suit,
the suit contract should prove superi·
or. 'aid two clubs to check on
majors. Proceed to four heans if
partner shows a heart suit: to three
no trump if North cannol cooperate.
Q 2 -Neither vulnerable,' as South
you hold:
• JO 3 1:7 8 4 o J 9 8 3 • A K·to 6 3 Partner opens the bidding wit.h one •
no trump. What do you respond?
A -This is not a question of whether
partner has minimum or maximum
no trump, regardless of r.our range,
but whether the clubs will produce
five tricks. Since there is no way of
finding out for sure. Ulke your
-chances by jumping to the no-trump
game.

?
What do you bid now?
A -You have a balanced. minimum
opening bid with no particular fea·
ture you need to reveal to partner
now. Since East's double has
relie\fed you of the responsibility to
make a rebid, a pass is clear cut.
Q 4 -Neither vulnerable. as South

Of two hearts promises a SIX-Card

Goldwyn: "Include us out!" Even if
you play that a raise 10 rhrce dia-.

sounds ns if it does. 'Therefore. bid
two hearts. but two no trump is also
acceptable.

? What do you bid now?
A -You have a powerful hand, bul
have no idea in what strain or at
what level you belong. The possible
misfit should convince you to take it
·slowly. Rebid one spade. Should
panner pass, it is extremely doubtful
you have missed game.
Q 6 -Both vulnerable, as South you

•K83 1:7 A9743 0 4 •K873
The bidding has proceeded: NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST

What do you bid now?
A -You have a preuy fair hand. but
not enough to guarantee an I I-trick
contraet, and you surely do not want
to bypass three no trump. which
could be your only makable game.
Taking these factors intD considera-
tion, a raise to three clubs is ade-
quate.
