Ruftled residents
still grumbling
over rumblings
By Philip Bonney, Dai/Y Pilot
· COSTA MESA -College Park residents were still
grumbling Sunday about the loud rumbling coming from
Cirque du Soleil's giant big-top tent, located directly
across the street from, and in plain view of, their homes.
Despite recent efforts of circus organizers to mitigate
the noise, residents say the thunderous sounds that inter-
mittently emanate from the twice-a-night show still rattle
their window panes and frazzle their nerves.
"The show is spectacular, absolutely wonderful, when
you're at the show,• said .College Park resident Karen
Millar, who accepted complimentary tickets from circus
management to see and bear first-hand what the noise
was about.
•At least now I can match the shaking in my house to
a scene in the show," Millar said. "And I still think the~
can tum the volume down without loosing any effective-
ness." -
Cirque du Soleil general manager Vmcent Gagne
promised residents last week that the show would drop
certain sound effects from its finale. He also said that all
shows would start promptly, would have shorter inter-
missions, and would hopefully finish earlier.
College Park residents say they appreciate their con-
cerns have not been ignored, but said the noise, which
lasts sometimes until 11 p.m., is still unbearable .
.. At the very least they have taken responsibility for
the loud noi.se, and they are polite," said Millar's hus-
band, Russell. "They have been willing to negotiate. No
one wants to go to court over this because no one wins in
court," he said.

In the meantime, residents who are still trying to deal
with the circus's latest announcement that it will extend
its stay until mid-April, said Sunday that they will con-

something is done.
And when the show leaves, hopefully it will be forev-

JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT -
·American Airlines flights were
back on schedule here Sunday,
two days after an imminent strike
by the airline's pilots union was
temporarily halted by President
Clinton, an airport spokeswoman
said.
News of the pending strike,
which threatened to ground the
nation's largest domestic air carri-
er, led locally. to µte cancellation
of four inbound flights on Friday,
and one inbound and five out-
bound flights on Saturday, offi-
cials said.
Sinkie shoves off
The famous 700-pound boat
pirate that refused to budge final-
ly did early Saturday, and Sinkie
the stinky sea lion has not been
seen since, a Sheriff's Harbor
Patrol deputy said late Sunday.
Deputy Dawn Arthur said her
office is unaware of Sinkie sight-
ings since her superiors towed the
sea lion's adopted home, a 21-foot
sailboat; to the opposite side of
the Harbor, probably while Sinkie
was"Out catching breakfast.
uon Saturday at 8:16 a.m. the
boat was moved from its mooring
to a mooring across the channel,"
Arthur said. "We felt this was the
safest and most humane way to
solve the problem. He was just
too big for that boat,• she said.
Ironically, Sinkie's Saturday
disappearance occurred 30 days
after he com.niandeered Heidi
Hall's sailboat, and one day after
throngs of reporters asked Harbor
Patrol officials to take them out to
get a closer look at the stubborn
sea manunal.
"Obviously, some passengers
were impacted, but fortunately
~e strike situation was delayed,"
said airport spokeswoman Kath-
leen Campini-Chambers.
"I think passengers coming
through J ohn Wayne Airport were
able to reach their destinations,
and certainly the airport coordi-
nated with American and other
airlines to assist passengers who
were inconvenienced," she said.
Many of the Friday night and
Saturday morning cancellations
were the result of a decision made
by airport officials worried that
American's potentially-grounded
aircraft would take up too much
space, Campini-Chambers said.

"We haven't had any problems
or any calls since then, so I think
the problem's been solved,"
Arthur said.

A rctttled Costa Mesa man
apparently lost co,itrol of his
black pickup near Orange Coast
College on Sunday and crashed
through the back of an unoccu-
pied bus stop before overturning
onto the street, police here -said.
· Driver Mark Grossman was
shaken but otherwise unhurt in
the 2:30 p.m. rollove.-, which
occurred near the intersection of
Adams Avenue and Pine Creek
Drive. Grossman told police he
was chasing two people who bad
robbed him moments earlier in a
nearby Albertson's supermarket
parking lot.
"He's claiming he was robbed
by a female armed with pepper
spray,• who then jumped into a
gray Chevrolet Camaro and fled,
Durham said.
"Those aircraft would have
presumably stayed here for an
indefinite period of time, and we
simply don't have the space to
accommodate that." she said.
Aircraft that normally would
have parked at John Wayne
overnight to accommodate pas-
sengers early Saturday were
instead "ferried" to Ontario Air-
port.
When news of Clinton's last-
minute intervention became offi-
cial late Friday, it was too late to
bring the planes back to Orange
Co\J.nty because of a local ordi-
nance restricting flights between
11 p.m. and 1 a.m., Campini-
Chambers said.
•Several witnesses saw the
fight and the accident, and we
have nothing to indicate that
his story is not true," Durham
said. Because police did not see
the chase, Grossman will only
be cited for making an unsafe
tum in an intersection, Durham
said.
'Costa Mesa resldent lmke
Bomer, who was visiting friends
in a nearby apartment complex,
said she heard tires screeching
and then a loud metal-crashing
sound. "Now I know what I
heard," she said after surveying
the scene.

Sunday, American Airlines

~We have ways of telling if

C urrently the entire nation
of Israel is in a state of
shock and mourning. The
people grieve for the 73 young
soldiers who lost their lives in a
tragic helicopter accident, for
their families and friends who
• must grapple with their deaths,
and for the nation's continuing
struggle which has not ceased in
its SO-year history.
The disaster affects almost
every community and city direct-
ly. The soldiers represented
every part of this small country;
kibbutzim, development towns,
the main cities and suburbs.
They also represented the het-
erogeneous population: Ashke-
nazi, Sephardic, North African,
Near Eastern and Bedouin.
In the 48 hours following the
accident, Israelis shed many
tears, rarely stirring from their
television sets and the screening
of funeral clips and personal
interviews. All deeply empathize
with the families who lost loved
ones, and realize it could have
just as easily been their child,
brother, hU.sband or cotlsin.
For better or for worse, the
nation has become quite adept at
dealing with this type of disaster.
Within four hours of the crash,
specialized government teams
were dispersed throughout the •
country to visit families of the
deceased, and delicately inform
th~ about what bad transpired.
The names of the soldiers
would not be released over the
radio or phone lines until after
the immediate family had been
informed. In addition, the lsraeli
Defense Force tried to alleviate
unnecessary fears by calling all
families whose sons were serving

school students whose next •
obligation is the atmy the dis-
tinction becomes even sharper.
This small nation depends
upon its soldiers for survival and
thus must send its most valuable
resource, its youth, off to the bat-
tle lines. The vast majority of
Israelis still feel strongly about
their national duty to serve in
the army, despite recent reports
to the contrary.
On the flip side, however, this
catastrophe has evoked ques-
tions about Israel's mission in
Lebanon. It has once again
raised the possibility of unilateral
withdrawal if a "package deal•
with Syria can be negotiated.
Although Israeli society is
deeply divided among religious,
ethnic and political lines,· in
times of tragedy the ~ple
stand united. Choking with emQ-
tion, Barak discussed the tempo-
rary relinquishing of political
ties.
•tn this bitter hour for the IDF
and state of Israel all disputes
cease: there is no Left and no
Right. There is no coalition and
no oppos1bon. In this bitter day
we are all the Israeli Defense
Force and all of us are the state
of Israel ... •
Why, I ask, does it take a
tragedy of this magnitude for
people to realize they share more
similarities than differences?

An automobile's Ignition wires
should last at least 50,000 miles, but It
Is Important to use proper replacement
wi111s when failure does occur. It
sometimes happens that cars with
computerized on-board systems will
experience unusual performance
problems after new Ignition wires are
Installed, even though the wires check
out fine on an engine analyzer.
Replacement wires may not have the
same built-In resistance value of the
original factory wires. In which case
the electromechanical Interference can
upset the operation of the on-board
computer. Thus, If an automobile
experience unusual performance
problems after the l.nstallatlon of a new
set of Ignition wires, the resistance of
the new wire should be checked
against factory apeclficatlons.

Estancia visits La Quinta in first
r round of CIF Playoffs Friday, to
Coach Rich Boyce's chagrin.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
Cl!RRfl'OS -Estancia High coach Rich
Boyce didn't need to look far to find those
empathetic toward his three-time Pacific
Coast League champions' first-round
road assignment at La Quinta, when the
CIF Southern Section m -A boys ~ket
ball playoff pairings were announced
Sunday at the section office.
Non other .thaii second-year La Quinta
Coach Craig Snider came forth with con-dolen~. after a 21-member committee
weighed several criteria and
awarded Friday's 7:30 p .m . home
game to his Garden Grove League cham-
' pions. •1n were EstanC:ia, I'd be upset, too,·
said Snider, who forecasted before the
pairings that his team would have to play
a wild-card game Wednesday to earn the
right to play Estancia on the Eagles' floor.

Pacifica Coach Bob Becker,
whose Mariners split with La

an 80-51 triumph to open the sec-

given the home game to
Estancia.

only three of its final five.

in Ill-A last week, was consistently
ranked in the division's top 10. La Quinta
was not.

Boyce said he could not find sufficient
rationale for the road assignment.
"I talked to Ray Plutko (pairings com-
mittee chairman and a former Southern
Section Commissioner) and he told me
some of the criteria they used,• Boyce
said. "But I think we had the edge in all
but one of those.•
Section Commissioner Dean Crowley
said the committee applied similar crite·

assigning home games, including:

teams did not meet. •
which it fell, 60-28.
•League finish -Both won outright
titles with two league losses.
•Strength against common opponents
· Laguna Beach was the lone common
foe. La Quinta beat the Artists, 58-38, the
third game of the season. Estancia split
with Laguna, a 50-41 first-round road
date and a 66-45 home loss Wednesday
night.
•strength of schedule -Estancia's
nonleague victin}.s include Southern Sec-
tion playoff teams Newport Har\)or
(twice), Edison, Esperanza and Orange.
La Quinta had nonleague wins over play-
off teams Bell Gardens and Laguna
Beach.
•Year-end momentum -La Quinta
Crowley also said La Quinta Athletic
Director. Jim Peny, a member of the com-
mittee, would have been disqualified
from participating in any debate involv-
ing his own school.
"I feel it should have been our home
game,• Boyce said. "Even if we win. we
host a quarterfinal game at an alternate
site (likely against Region II top seed

played our last home game this year.

Playoffs at Ocean View
'
• Sailors' first postseason in
three years starts off with
rematch against Seahawks,
who won by 14 in prior clash.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
CERRITOS -A Newport Harbor
High team that has already surpassed
some preseason predictions, will take to
the road Friday against Ocean View in
hopes of begipning an extended run
through the CIF Southern Section 11-A
boys basketball playoffs.
The Sailors (15-11), who knocked off
El Toro in a third-place Sea View
League playoff game Saturday, earned
the No. 5 seeding in one of the 32-team
bracket's four eight-team regionals,
when pairings were announced Sun-
day at the section office.
Golden West League runner-up
Ocean View (19-6), ranked ninth in ll-A
last week, is the No. 4 seed in the
regional, made up of eight of the 11
Orange County teams in the division
field.
Friday's first-round affair, which tips
off at 7:30 p.m., is a rematch of a Jan. 4
nonleague meeting won by Ocean
View, 53-39, at the Seahawks' gym.
Friday's winner would likely face
regional top-seed Sonora (23-3, seeded
r ~ .... ii
! ·!::~:
third in the division and ranked third in
the county) in Tuesday's second.round.
The Raiders, coached by Corona del
Mar High grad Mike Murphy, host Gar-
den Grove (11-15) Friday.
Newport Coach Larry Hirst. who
could not be reached for comment Sun-
day, will count on a Sailor squad that
handled El Toro Saturday, 63-47, to
show up, rather than the squad that
was blown out, 66-31, by the same
Chargers Friday night.
The Sailors, picked by the Daily Pilot
to finish fifth in the Sea View League,
are making their first postseason
appearance since 1994. They are also
bidding for their first playoff triumph
since 1992.
Though Ocean View won the first
meeting, the Tars, playing without 6-
foot-5 senior Danny Pulido (on a
recruiting visit at the time to Oregon,
where be will play football as a colle-
gian) led late in the third quarter.
The all-Orange County regional,
which includes three Golden West
League representatives, reflects the
first-year format adopted by the South-
ern Section to regionalize enrollment-
based divisions in order to decrease
transportation costs.
Artesia (25-2), is the top seed in the
division, while Dominguez of Compton
