But Miller is a little more cau-

"Don't talk about that,• Miller
warned Pi.rkel. "That's bad luck.•
Luck has played a large part in
the endeavor, Pi.rkel said.
Their venture began in 1993
when Miller, a marketing consul-

Pirkel about opportunities for
entrepreneurs at the turn of the
century.

night to talk about what kind of

A 2-week visit to Costa Mesa by 16 students
sµows many difference~ between countries
T his is a story that Tom
Clancy should write . There
is just one problem: Tom
Clancy writes fiction, and this is
a true story.
During the early days of
World War Il, a steady stream of
Russian tankers left Long Beach
Harbor bound for Vladivostok,
Siberia, carrying American oil.
From Vladivostok. that oil was
transported by.tank cars over the
nans-Siberlan Railway to the so-
called Eastern Front. where Sovi-·
et Russia and Nazi Germany
!Wyfb
B y the end of. her two-.
week visit to Costa Mesa
High School last week-
end, Sabine Oswald had
decided that the spread of
American culture to her home
country of Austria could have
e.n upside.
•we have so much more
homework,• she complained.
Sabine. one or 16 students
visiting from the village of
Krem, was not alone In her
perception.
•And we can't choose the
subjects we take,• added Dani
Hohenegg.
The amount or homework
was among the minor differ-
ences the students noticed
between their home and
Southern Cahfornia. Others
were more substantial.
•Here everything is so big,•
Michael Zach said. ·Austria is
8 million people in the whole
country. And the drtnlong age.
It is so old here.·
"You can't onent yourself
here.• Daru said. "Everything
looks the same.·
"Most people are so flexible
here,· Kathenne lvenz said.
•And they don't take a week
planning something, they just
do it.•
Dani, the self-described res-
ident radical among the group,
pointed out that people of dlf-
ferent races did not mix very
much and suggested that soci-
ety was segregated.
Sabine disagreed.
"But we have refugees from
Bosnia, but they aren't very
accepted,• she said. "Com-
pared to there, people here are
so tolerant.·
Mention of Bosnia seemed
to bring pause to the group,
hushed for a second by
thoughts of NATO airstrikes on
Serbia. Krem is less than five
hours by car from Belgrade.
And here they were in Costa
Mesa, far from their families as
NATO bombers flew over their
homes.
The unease over war was
particularly j>alpable for Indira
Kadic. Born near Sarajevo, she
and her family fled the Bosnian
war for Austria in 1992. But her
sister still lives in Serbia.
•My father called me last
night because 'we found out
she is OK, and she is in Saraje-
vo,• Kadic said. "For me, I
think it's the only thing they
•can do because it's the only
way to stop them."
were engaged in a life-or--death
s~ggle involving untold thou-
sands of casualties.
To get to Vladivostok from
Long Beach the tankers had to
cross the Sea of Japan. No prob-
lem. Japan was not at war with
anyone. Nor were we. Then
came Pearl Harbor, and we
Americans were at war with
• Japan. However, Russia was not
involved in our war with Japan.
And so the Russian tankers con-
tinued across the Pacific and the
Sea of Japan without interfer-
ence ftom the Japanese.
Then, suddenly, the San Pedro
branch of the Office of Naval
Intelligence, where I was an
investigating officer, received a
report that these Russian tankers
were being stopped by the
Japanese and that the Japanese
were siphoning off one-fourth of
the oil as a kind of tribute for
going through Japanese waters.
Aspiring artists have chance to shine
The trouble with this story, if
true. was that Japan was using
our oil to help them in their war
against us. American oil was

ute for going through the Sea of
Japan. The bartender didn't
know the American seaman. had
never seen him before or since.
This bartender had been a reli-
able source of in.formation in the
past. Howe ver, we knew nothing
of the reliability of the man who
told him the story.
I was asSlgned the case. I
secured the servlces of a man
who spoke Russian. He and I
began to frequent that Long
Beach Harbor bar. Our cover was
that he was an American-born
Russian sympathetic to the Russ-
ian war effort. I was a wealthy
young American with similar
sympathies. and we both worked
at Douglas Aircraft and were in
that bar to show our support for
the Russian war effort by buying
drinks for the Russian seamen
from the tankers. r bought the
drinks, always straight vodka.
He talked to the Russians and
when the evening was over told
me what they said. r found the Russiaris to be
delightful -tough, hard-drink-
ing, young and intensely loyal to
communist Russia, the only life
they had ever known.
They were under strict diso-
pline, which was enforced by a
Communist Party commiSSdr on
each ship. They could go ashore
only in groups of four and talk to
strangers only while in those
groups. They were qwte garru-
lous and would talk about any-
thing -exce_pt their trips to and
from Vladivostok. Of those trips,
they said not a word. Our inves-
tigation went on for two or three
weeks until my stomach was
about to give out and l learned to
hate vodka. Nevertheless, we
continued our efforts to either
prove or disprove the story
Then we received mstructions
from Washington. "Stop the
investigation immediately.•
Whether the story was true or
not, we were to do nothing to
make the Russians unhappy. The
main effort was to defeat Ger-
many. The war in the Pacific
took second billing. and they
didn't want the Russians to find
out that we were investigating
this story. I know this sounds s1l-
ly, but those were the orders
I'll never know whether the
story was true or not. I guess I'll
just have to wait until Tom Clan-
cy writes a book about 1t. But 1t
was quite a story. ·

Navajos were stationed in the

The army was having prob-

commands being intercepted by
the Japanese. Commanders came
up with a clever way of using the
Navajo language to send impor-

elaborate system of using Navajo

The U.S. government kept the

He found the organization on the

"It took a long time to get hold

ORONA DEL MAR -Walid Khoury, who
weeks ago predicted the Corona del Mar
h girls soccer team's 1999-2000 season
uld be "the beginning of a dynasty,•
gned as Sea Kings coach Monday, due to
· cts with current club coaching duties.
oury compiled a 16-10-8 record in two
at the helm, including an 11-6-1 record
season. But a rugged Sea View League
schedule produced a combined 5-9-6 mark
and the Sea Kings failed to get at-large invita-
tions to the CIF Southern Section Division IV
playoffs each of the last two campaigns.
Mlt was a tough decision, but CIF rules
don't allow a club coach to coach the same
players in high school and about six or sevep
players from my Slammers Futbol Club wider-
14 team will be going to CdM next year. My
loyalty is to that (club) team. I've had those
girls since they were 11 and they've given me
-everything they've got the last four years.
.. CdM was great. To work two years to
bUUd the foundation, then step down before a
season which I think could be our glory year is
tough. But rules are rules. I guess you can't
have your cake and eat it too.•
CdM will return all but two players from

last year's team and is expected to be bol-
stered by the arrival of the aforementioned
freshmen as it makes its Pacific Coast League
debut.
The Sea Kings were ranked in the CIF Divl-
sion IV Top 10 throughout the recently com-
pleted season, in which they opened 8-0.
. Sophomore goalkeeper Britta Vogele, twice
a first-team all-league selection, is among the
strong nucleus the new coach will inherit.
Freshman Allison Harvey and sophomore
Kate Simon were second-team all-leaguers in
1999.
#It's an ideal situation, H Khoury said of his
successor's good fortWle.
Corona del Mar High Athletics Director
Jerry Jelnick said interested applicants may
contact his office at (949) 515-6058 for details.

• Five-time Olympian was a unique two-sport standout,
and finds herself embroiled in virtual-reality cycling.

ppropriately born n
on the Fourth of
uly, Connie
Paraskevin-Young was as
explosive as a firecracker when
she competed as an Olympic
speed skater and cyclist.
Paraskevin-Young, a two-time
Olympian on the ice during the
1980 and '84 Wmter Games,
made the U.S. Olympic women's
sprint cycling team three times
and captured a bronze medal at
the 1988 Seoul Summer Games.
A Corona del Mar resident,
Paraskevin-Young, who retired
after the 1996 Atlanta Gam~s.
her fifth Olympics, remains
heavily involved in cycling with
her husband, Roger. a former
U.S. cycling team coach.
The two have developed an
onhne, virtual reality simulator,
m which cyclists from around the
world can race each other
through the internet. The
company, called the Shimano
Cyber Cycling Experience, lS
expected to be launched tlus
year.
But long before technology
expanded the cycling trails,
Paraskevin-Young, 37, launched
an unparalleled athletic career
that started with humble
beginnings at age 10 in Detroit,
Mich. That's when Paraskevin-
Young began speed skating and
cycling.
Following her second Wmter
Olympics at Sarajevo,
Yugoslavia, in 1984, she
encountered problems with her
shin muscles and dropped speed
skating, devoting her career to
cycling.
·It's an explosive event, and l
tJunk you need that kind of
personality,• Paraskevin-Young
once said of sprint cycling, in
which she won 11 national
championships.
After winning the bronze in
her first Summer Olympics,
Paraskevin-Young struggled at
the 1992 Barcelona Games, then
briefly retired. •1 took some time
off (following the '92 Games),
and I had never done that in my
life," she said.
With the thought of competing
in one more Olympiad, this time
in her home country, Paraskevin·
Young once again lit the athlebc
fuse and eventually made her
fifth Olympic team in 1996. She
defeated Christine Witty m the
match spnnt finals at the U.S.
CREW
Connie ParaskeVin-Young
cycling trials to earn the team's
berth in Atlanta.
"One thing I've always lll<ed
about match sprint cycling is that
you win or lose under your own
power.• said Paraskevm-Young
a Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame
honoree, celebrating the oncom-
~ millennium.
"Whoever is first to cross the
line -wins. It's not like figure
skating. where you're judged. So
that's very appealing to me, but
that's also why it struck me m
the face (at Barcelona), because
I realized you're not in control.•
Paraskevin-Young was
involved in a controversial call at
the 1992 Games and disquahlled
from the event. But she
rebounded nicely and made a
strong bid for gold in '96
During her Olympic yedJ'S,
Paraskevin-Young would train
locally instead of partiopati.ng
with the U.S. Cycling Federation
in Colorado Springs, Colo Her
husband had also been her
coach since 1981. ;
"11us lS probably the best
place to come and tram.· Roger
Young said. ·we came here from
lndianapohs in 1984 -myself,
Connie and Mark Gorski (the
men's 1984 spnnt gold medalist).
We drove south to find the best
place to train -and that
happened to be here •
So what advice would
Paraskevin-Young gwe to a
begmning cyclist?
•I would tell them to keep
diversity in theu traming by
changmg from hills to Oat
surfaces and by choosing new
routes while still returning to old
favontes, • she said "Make it
challenging and keep it fun!"

Opening l~ad: Four of •
This looks hkc a simple enough
hand. How would you play it at duplicate? Would yoo adopt lhe same
line at rubber bridge?
The auction was straightforward.
North showed a good, long suit and strong hand with lhe jump rebid in
clubs. South was close to a slam try,
but sellled for the no-trump game
instead.
At duplicate there is no problem.
The chance of a .5-0 club tplic i• about
~ peroent, but If WC$t hll 1ll 1hc clubs
the 5Uit cao be brought m with a
marke\,I finesse for the: len. And even
if Eai;t has all the clubs, the contract
is sttll safe 1f diamonds are 3·2 and
either WI holds UlC ace or hearta or
diamonds can be established without
allowing East 10 aain the lead. All in
nil. 1he con1roc1 will come home 99 times In a hundred, so start clubs
from the top in an efTon to take as
many tricks as possible. However,
rhis i'I the one time in 100 when
everything is wrong and. baning a
major gaffe by the defense, declmr
can come to only ei"1t tricks.
Al rubber bridge. 11 is more impor-
tant to secure u,e;contract than worry
about overtricks. There are four lriclc.s
available in spades and diamonds. so
Sooth needs only five club tricks to
get home. In addition, Bast must be
kept off lead to prevent 1 possibly
fatal lead through the k.ing or hearts.
That can be accomplished easil,Y.
Decllllef' must win the first trick m
dummy and lead a low club, insertin1
the eight from hand if East follows.
At worst, West will win and decllll'Cr
has blown an overtrick or two. At
best, the cards will lie as in the dia-
gram and declarer will land the con-
tract with an overtriclc when the eight
holds the trick.

The bidding:
NORTH EAST SOUfH WEST
•• Pass 10 PHI
3• Pus 3NT Pus .,... Pus
Opening lead: Four of •
This looks like a simple enough
hand. How would yoo play it al
duplicate? Would yoo adopt the same
line at rubber bridge?
'The auction was straightforward.
North showed a good, long suit and
strong hand with lhe jump rebid in
clubs. South was close to a slam try.
bot settled for 1hc no-trump game
instead.
Al duplicate the~ 11 no problem.
The chance or a S-0 club split Is about
4 percent. bot if West has all the clubs
the suit can be brought in with a
marked finesse fOf the ten And ewn
•f East hias all the clubs, the contract
is still safe if diamonds are 3·2 and
either East holds I.he ace of hean.s or
diamonds can be established withoul
allowing East to gain the lead. All in
all. I.he conlroct wlll come home 99
limes in a hundred, so start clubs
from I.he top In an effort to take as
many tricks ns possible. However,
this i~ the one time in 100 when
everything is wrong and, barring a
major gaffe by the defense, declarer
can come to only ei"1t tricks.
At rubber b~ge, 11 is more impor·
tant to secure tfie COOltael than worry
about overtricks. There are four tricks
available in spPdes and diamonds, so
South needs only five club tricks to
get home. In addition, East must be
kept off lead 10 prevent a possibly
facal lead through the king of hearts.
Thal can be accomplished easily.
Declarer must win the first Irick 1n
dummy and lead a low cl ub, insertina
lhe eight from hand if East follows.
At worst. West will win and declarer
has blown an ovcruick or two. At
best. lhe cards will lie as in the dia-
gram and declarer will land lhe con·
tract with an overtrick when the eight
holds the Irick..
