NEWPORT-MESA -School
board members are heading to
Philadelphia for .another educa-
tional workshop, despite recent
debate over their expenses for a
December convention in San
Jose.
And at least one trustee, Dana
Black, said she cannot justify this
latest trip in light of potential bud-
get cuts.
The Forum for the American
School Superintendent, a 60-
member Danforth organization of
superintendents including Bernd,
will pay for Bemd's and three
trustees' travel, hotel and food
expenses for the meeting. The
Danforth Foundation will cover
the meals for the four remaining
trustees but" won't pick up their
travel arid hotel expenses.

The expenditure of more than
$10,000 du.ring a December
school board conference in San

praise from the community.

and certainly one that involves

Trustee.Serene Stokes said she
thought "the board could learn a
lot about communicating from the
meeting. .
Superintendent Mac Bernd
and school trustees will attend
workshops about public engage-

ference would be beneficial for
board members, but she will not
attend unless she finds a corpo-

decides to finance the trip herself.

Shareholders
holdou~for
a better Offer
• Suspicious about the motives of the two
water districts courting them, Santa Ana
Heights shareholders say they want the
company's worth appraised.
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
SANTA ANA HEIGHTS - "Why would two large
water districts want to pay nearly $5 million for a 72-
year-old water company?• asked several Santa Ana
Heights Water Co. shareholders who gathered
Wednesday to discuss their suitors.
That suspicious.sentiment permeated the gather-
ing of about 350 Santa Heights Water Co. sharehold-
ers who came to discuss
the advantages of selling
their shares to either Mesa
Consolidated or Irvine
Ranch water districts.
In the end, the share-
holders said they're not
ready to sell to anybody
until the small water com-
pany's assets are properly
appraised.
"How do we know (the
company's assets are) not
being undervalued or
overvalued with no
appraisal?" resident Paul
Manderino asked Mesa'$
General Manager Karl
Kemp.
Kemp admitted that
Mesa Consolidated had
not formally appraised the
company's assets, but instead based its offer on an
earlier bid by Irvine Ranch.
The meeting was organized by the Santa Ana
Heights Redevelopment Agency Advisory Commit-
tee so that shareholders could discuss the competing
offers. But Irvine Ranch and Santa Ana Heights rep-
resentatives refused to attend because they felt Mesa
was involved in setting up the meeting.
Many shareholders chided their own board mem-
bers for not sho~g up.

Mustangs blistered the nets at a

But it was Mesa's inability to
stop Rosary's penetrating guards,
as well as keep the Royals' tall and
physical front-court players off the

Robin Davie's game
has the gambler's
combination of going

L ast week, I had the
opportunity to attend a
slide presentation given by
former two-time BOC sallor
Robin Davie at my yacht club.
Though born-and-bread a
dinghy sailor, I was interested to
see what inspired this man to get
into a boat and sail around the
world by himself.
I understand the lure ol the
open sea. I can understand the
need to travel around the world. I
can even understand the desire
_to_ compete .in one of the )YOrld's.
most extreme sporting events.
But if you've ever seen video
from one of these trips, you'll
• know why I choose to sail in

In the past, I have caught
glimpses of the BOC Challenge

Then there's that loss of We
thing. No Ufejacket, no Ufeline;
both interfere with the
movement around the boat. And
your connection to the mainland
is through your GPS -no such
tblng as a crash boat out there.
My thought -cl.early, these
people are nuts.
Spending weeks at a time
alone, catching mjnjmaJ sleep,
braving intense stonns.
Looking closer at race footage,
I saw pitching seas, broken span
and sailori clinging to their boats
while they awaited rescue teams
-reinforcing my decision not to •
be the first A.mericanJ~eln
the race.
So I figured that I'd live
vicariously through Robin Davie.
Davie, a stocky,
average-heightman, began bis
presentation with an introduction
to his endeavors.

apomor, Davie took it upon
bimMlf to raise the approximate
$50,000 that it would take to
begin hil campaign.
He wu able to purchase a
boat from the on.set from monies
saved up from bis time working
in the Falklands. He named the
boat Cornwall after his homeland
and drove it on a trailer to
anywhere he thought a large
crowd might gather.
He drove to malls and county
fairs and flea markets, literally .
everywhere he could.
He sold T-shirts and posters of
the boat at these events, raising
money in small increments. He
even sold postcards, which be
had patrons address to
themselves dr friends and family,
and then ,gave back to him:
The idea was that he would
mail these postcards jusfoefore
he set out on the final leg plthe
race. He sold more than 2,500.

showing official clips from the
race and pictures he himseU had

Fpm 'Absol$ly

"A~te Power' is Clint
Eastwood's latest movie thriller,
which he not only stars in, but
produced and directed us well.
Unfortunately for~
•Absolute Power" is absolutely
disappointing.
The film is about a master
thief who, while making the
heist of a lifetime, witnesses a
man and younger woman
engaged in
sexual fore-
play that gets
rough, then
turns deadly.
The rest
of the plot
involves the
murder cover
up and
attempt to
eliminate
Richard Brunette Eastwood, while
Eastwood
clttempts to keep from being
eliminated, and the police try to
figure out what's happening.
With a stellar cast including
Eastwood, Gene Haclanan, Ed
Harris, Scott Glenn and Judy
Oa:VIS, COllpled with Eastwood's
recent movie succes5es, I
apected a"thrilling, tense
drama. What I got was a mildly
entertaining film that misses its
mark on many occasions and
bas several •yeah right's"
(where you see something then
say to yourself, "yeah, right, like
that's the way it would have
happened"). What works best in
the film, and ls the most inter-

The latest motion picture
from producer1director/actor
Clint Eastwood, "Absolute
Power," is a crime classic. It's
the kind of movie that was
made when the major studios
dominated film: crisp profession~
al.ism; superior script, editing
and cast; meticuloµs production
values.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21 , 1997
It also bas warmth.-a
WJ.ique quality Butwood seems
able to end.ow ln bis work no
matter what the character or
theme. Like Clark Gable, be
seems to have appeal for both
men and women.
As an enduring {aftd endear-
ing) rogue, be seems comfort-
able with his aging, whi~
seems to be a maturing. His
magnetism has not diminished.
He uses it to give dimension to
Luthet Whitney, the role h e's
playing.
In •Absolute Power,•
Eastwood is a legendary art
thief about to retire alter one
final heist. His target is a fabu-
lous collection of an American·
icon (played by E.G. Marshall).
The jewels and a cache of
money are in a vault secreted
behind a two-way mirror.
As be is about to vamoose,
the very· young wife of the icon
enters ...
with a lover.
After the
lovemaking
turns nasty,
the woman
is killed.
Luther

rified from
the vault. He
gets away,
but the hunt
is on.
Like the
~ high-quality production
values, the cast is fine. Besides
Marshall, Jt indudes Ed Hanis,
Lama Lipney, Judy Davis and
Gene Hackman (a little out of
control) ..
One of the movie's pluses is
the set dressings, which
eilhance the ambience of the
film. Well-paced but not frenet-
ic, "Absolute Power's" action
keeps the viewer absorbed.
There's a minimum. of blood
and mayhem, but there's
enough danger to satisfy all
fans of this geme. It's probably
carping to mention that the
lovemaking (a misnomer, if
ever there was. one) scene goes
on too long, as does the chase
through the woods, but they
don't spoil the fun.
•Absolute Power• is excel-

The Mesa will celebrate its
50th anniversary in 1998, and

Hank Panian, a member of the
Costa Mesa Historical Society.
The theater is housed in a large
building coated in dingy red-
and-white paint, with architec-
ture that gives a faint hint of the
th~ter's better days. Older,
brown seats are mixed with
newer ones; faded carpet run-
ners decorate the aisles. And of
course, there's that unique odor
that assaults the nostrils.
But the Mesa has a dedicated
crew of about six employees
who are trying to keep the the-

pooled about $50 of their own

Tony and Betty Scaccia, a

Costa Mesa woman has am;assed antiques, toy
treasures, Jaumpe dolls and much more
By Nancy Cheever, Daily Pilot
W alldng into Tracey
Oorame's Costa Mesa
apartment is like walk-
ing into a countty cottage.
Antique furniture, dolls, big
teddy bears and four black and
white cats adom the quaint resi-
dence subtly accentuating her
many collections.
Dorame, 34, likes to surround
herself with the collections,
which make up the backdrop of
her living room.
Along with her older collec-
tions she buys toys, dolls and
other treasures that are still on
the market and may one day be
valuable, like a •Toy Story• doll
that is no longer made and
Disney record albums.
"Collections are not as special
or unii{ue as they used to be,•
she said, referring to bow popu-

A Brooklyn, N. Y. native,
Dorame said she found most of
the oollectibles ,back East, where
the history ii greater than
California's and the antiques cost
much lea.
Dorame insists collecting is
not an obsession, but a petsonal
hobby that evokes fond cbild-
bood memories.
•1 lived in the neighborhood

to her kitcben,
•1 like to look at pretty things

talgia of it," she said.
She also collects McDonald's
"Happy Meal• toys, plastic baby
toys, female figurines and
Playmobile toys.
Dorame's favorite collection is
a set of Klumpe dolls (pro-

ent occupation, bobby or

Tracey Dorame collects just about anything interesting.
Her 5-year-old daughter
plays with the doll and toy col-
lections, which will one day be
hers.
•When I'm gone, 1 want my
daughter to have those thiiigs, •
she said. "She will thank me
later. A lot of stuff you throw
away. I wished I had saved a lot
of my (dolls and toys)."
She said she won't pay $500
for a lunch box. but she would
spend the family grocery money
if she found a Klumpe.
•Tf l have $100 in my pocket

Although Dora.me cherishes
her collections, it wouldn't be
the end of the world if tomorrow
they were gone. •u I could save my family
and my cats, that's all that mat-
ters,• she said. •Things are
