FIVE EASY QUESTIONS
JUSTIN WARREN I OAA.V PILOT
Spreading the
light of day from
a street corner
• EDrr<>l''S NOTE; As he sat at the corner of
Newport Boulevard and 19th Street, we asked
David Wlkox. 48, why he spends his days dis-
playing signs to passing motorists. He was on day
five of a 40-day stretch at the spot and has been
displaying his signs for 12 years.
Why do you sit out here 1
There's a lot of reasons I'm here. I'm
kind of putting the light of day on things.
The focus is on how to believe, not what
to believe. I'm not doing anything par-
ents shouldn't be doing. Teaching
responsibility is simple a responsibility.
It's a shame that a lot of parents aren't
doing this.
How do you choose where to sit?
1lus is the ~t intersection in
Orange Coune, '& · find the gateways.
When (people are] on the freeways is
about the onlr time they do any intro-
spective thinkirig.
What reaction do you get?
I don't have an expectation to change
anybody's mind. I don't expect to be
liked. Most people don't even like them-
selves. I get people screaming, •Get a
life!"
How do you decide what your signs
will look like?
It has to be read by people turning
that comer. I mAke a new one every day.
I say the S4Ine things over 'and over. My
favorite sign is, "Why am I asking your
quesb~nr
How do you support yourself?
I don't need money. Peopl put me up

of 2,100 students. It was touted
as a "school within a school"
concept.
Four of the Academies focus
on a thematic approach to learn·
ing, with all classes emphasizing
a group of subjects. There are
about 100 students in each one.
Every Advanced Placement and
Honors class is open to every
student. whether or not they are
in an academy. About 1/3 of the
freshmen choose not to enroll in
an academy. Next year, zero
perlod will be available for Aca·
Oemic Decathlon, Mock 1\ial,
and Model United Nations, so
that those will not conllict with
academy classes. As I advanced
around the room to hear each
pitch, each one emphasized the
need to have the student pick
the academy they wanted to
attend. The parents should not
make the decision.
Harbor High IS on a modified
block schedule, so that on Mon·
day students dttend all six of
tbeLT classes. On Tuesday and
Thursday they attend three
classes for longer periods. On
Wednesday and Friday they
~end the other three. Ideally,
the academy classes are sched·
uJed on either the A or B block
day, so that field trips or other
special activities can take place
on the Academy Day.
The oldest of the academies is
the Da Vmei Academy. It focus-
es on math and science and is in
its fourth year. Each year these
students will take classes that are
not normally thought of as math
and science·onented.
The Shakespeare Academy is
in its first year. Its focUs Is music,
art and drama. Its biggest sell·
ing point is that the student will
be with people who have a pas·
sion for the arts, including the
teachers, and many of the
asStgnments focus on that pas·
sion In this academy, a student
lS still required to take math and
science.
The Magellan Academy is in
its third year, and focuses on
social soence, liberal arts and
international relations. Students
in this academy take psychology
and sociology. These are not AP
classes, however, and do not
replace those classes at the col·
lege level.
The Franklin Academy is in
its first year with a focus on busi·
• ·: IML1mtR.
COllAMllA• .... , ...
ness, computers and commu.n.ica·
ti.on. Students take Web page
• design, job shadow in the com·
munity and <;reate a business
with a product to sell, at least in
theory. By using power point or
video presentations, a student
could do one project and get
credit in English, history and
computer class. Students had
just completed a three·minute
video, which they had edited.
Field trips included trips to the
Pacific Stock Exchange, Chiat
Day Advertising Agency, and the
Museum of Computer Science.
After listening to all of the
presentations, I wanted to attend
every academy. Therein lies the
possible problem. What do stu·
dents do if they are interested in
all of the areas emphasized by
the four academies? By picking
one area at such a young age, is
the student precluding himself
from finding other areas of inter·
est? U I were in charge, I would
have all freslunen and sopho·
mores in college take a variety of
classes before declaring a major,
so the idea of committing to a
field at such a young age bothers
me. Obviously, the kids at Har·
bor High love it, though. l also
don't understand how they can
take these courses and still fit in
all of the courses necessary for
UC requirements.

T ed Newland, one Iii
of America's most
remarkable water
polo coaches, is thought
of by many as the 20th Century
standard for disopline in
coaching.
For 43 years, Newland has
accentuated his poolSlde style
onto hundreds of aquatic
athletes, launching water polo
p rograms at Newport Harbor
(1959) and Corona de! Mar high
schools, then turrung UCI mto
an NCAA DiVIsion l power and,
later, becoming the U.S. national
coach.
Newland is dnven,
cantankerous, militant, a father
figure, a teacher, a tactician,
and, perhaps above all.
respected.
•t'm a mean ass: Newland
said. ·1 believe· in a lot of
self-disopline and self-
moti.vation and try to achieve."
Newland is a rare breed in
today's standards of college
coaching, having dodged Title
DC bullets and persevered when
the University of California
system pulled the plug on hls
men's polo program, which
captured three NCAA DiV1Slon I
championships but never had
its own pool.
Until a few months ago.
• 1 finally got my own pool
after all these years, so I figured
I'd stick around for at least a
couple more years,• said
Newland, who spent decades
scrounging for pool nrne and
often found his program low on
the pecking order for prime-time
access. ·u was gettmg uglier and
uglier to get pool time. I'd get
pushed around everywhere. No
one else had to do that. There's
no way I could've kept gomg on
like that. It's like a football coach
with no held to work on. I
honestly believe (at UCI) we
would've won at least one and
maybe two more NCAA
championships if we had our
own pool."
While Newland's Anteater
squads would travel to every
practice (CdM, Newport Harbor
and Irvine's Heritage Park were
familiar sites), the 33-year UCI
polo coach conducts poolside
business in a wheelchair to save
his legs from standing for so
many hours.
•w e also work out every
