You say Kabbalah, and I say .Qabalah • ••
N o matter how you

to Hermetic instruction.
Here, the term refers to
aspects of Kabbalah studied

comes from Hennes nis-

But following bis links
teaches us other things, too.
Although the Internet bas
few rules, one guideline
carries clout. That's keeping
links updated. 1 Clicking Doug's link to

you to a page boasting 15

all facets of alchemy. It also
notifies you the site has

auto-magically whisked to
the new location. There, you
discover the infounation

the original link?
OK, OK. 1\venty eight
megabytes; that's 28 and six
zeroes. And a byte of digital
information makes a single
letter of the alphabet. That
comes to 28 million charac-
ters of text. Spell Kabbalah

This page is also a mem-

Investigating what that

TUNE IN, NOT UP
,.
While most older consumers rihve grown
up with the notion that an annual tune-up
of a car's engine Is good prevent!Ve
maintenance, very few late-model cars
with engine performance problems can
benefit from a tune-up It may also come
as a surpnse to many that. when a car
does not run well. the solution does not
necessanly rest with having 1t tuned-up.
The reason behind this rests with the fact
that most cars built since 1981 have
computerized fuel and ignition systems.
Thus, the solution to their engine
performance problems Is usually more
complex than simply having a tune-up.
Late-model cars that do not run well
usual[y require soph1st1cated testing
procedures referred to as diagnostic
checkups These checks require the use
of diagnostic instruments by trained
automotive techn!Clans.
HINT: Modern cars require a simple
procedure referred to as a maintenance
tune-up, which basically includes
replacing the spark plugs. air and fuel
filters, and testing the spark plug wires.
as well as visually inspecting various
other components.
New Concepts in Cardiac Care at Hoag DEPRESSING
NEWS
Hoag's cardiac surgical program kicks off its secoqd decade
under the direction of Drs. Aidan Raney, Douglas Zusman and
Colin Joyo with four new concepts in cardiac care now being
perfonned at Hoag Heart Institute. Each represents an Orange
County first, plus new treatment options and benefits for patients.
Recently, Hoag performed Orange County's first keyhole surgery
for aortic valve replacement. Its name reflects the fact that only a
small four-mch incision is required. In the past, traditional ·
surgery involved a long incision that begins at the Adam's apple,
cuts through the nb cage and ends just below the ribs. Besides less
pain, keyhole patients benefit from a shorter hospital stay and a
quicker re,covery.
' In another first, Hoag now performs the Ross procedure designed
especially for younger adults needing valve replacement. Also
known as "the pulmonary switch," doctors remove the dis-eased
aortic valve and replace it with the patient's own pulmonary valve
and then insert a human cyro-preserved valve in the pulmonary
position. This eliminates having to use mechanical devices or
animal tissue valves. The result is a single corrective operation
that does-notrequitt life~ong use l'i!nners or-restri.ctions on
rigorous ~ctivity.
Laser tebhnology is also on the rise, and Hoag is the only local
participant in a national clinical study on transmyocardial
revascularization. An alternative to bypass surgery, this technique
uses lasers to open channels in the heart and improve blood flow. Hoag Heart Institute cardiac .rurgeon.y f)eTform mitral valve repair with viriting DH~.
Hoag also formed an exclusive affiliation with the International
Heart Institute (Illl) to share surgical expertise on complex heart
valve surgery. Access to IHI heart re earcb means Hoag is likely to
continue being the first in Orange County to offer breakthrough
cardiac procedures.
