Here's how it went The invitation came by phone directly from the president him- self. The visitor was able to com- bine his t;rip to Washington, o.c.: with a hip he was making to deliver a speech in the area. When he arrived at the White House, he was greeted "like a vis- iting ambassador.• An attendant fold him the president was await- ing hbn in the upstairs library and look him fi> the door, which was slightly ajar. . When the visitor entered, the president was sitting on the floor wtth his shoes off watching the late afternoon news. He put on his shoes without embarrassment CUld greeted his visitor wa.a'nly. From that moment on for the next 18 how;s -except when they were sleeping -the visitor was in the company of the presi- dent. .- The first order of business was a two-hour tour of the White House. The president would pause after each room· and talk about its history. Once, standing on the portico at the rear of the White House, the president point- ed out an area where the color • and texture of the grass were clearly different. "That's because we had a tent set up in that spot to conduct peace talks," he explained, He was consummately curious, frequently asking his visi- tor, "What's going on where you are?• in relation to topics that came up during the tour. They were joined at dinner by the president's daughter, who . entertained them afterward with a musical number. The president apologized for the absence of his wife, who was attending a meet- mg in another city. The visitor was a psychiatrist '$29500 complete CaJI Toll Free 888-271-4567 Don'r Delay, Avoid Probate! David Pawlowski Attorney ar Law .. joseph ·n. -bell who was currently treating the president's brother, and the presi· dent asked many questions about the treatment and how he might help. He wanted very much to understand the family aspects of this illness. The president was also keenly interested in the visitor's upcom- fug speech on the nature and treatment of alcoholism and asked if he might take a copy of it to bed with him. After dinner, the president pro· duced two volumes of movie titles and asked his visitor to pick one to · watch before they went to bed. The doctor hied to defer that choice to the president but was told that protocol demanded the visitor do the honors. So he chose, and the two men sat alone in the While House the- ater watchlng a World Wa:r II movie called wThe Enemy Below." The only interruption all evening was a phone call to the doctor. The president's guest slept rest- lessly in the Queen's Bedroom, wluch is next door to the Lincoln Bedroom. "I kept thi.nki.ng," he recalls, "what a singular expen- ence this was: a Navy doctor spending a night in the·home of the commander-in-chief." -The following morning, the president went over his visitor's speech at the bre~ast table. He had read and annotated it and was full of questions. Not once had the viSitor been approached by a political henchman of the president or the subject of money even been mentioned. When the president bade his visitor goodbye after breakfast, he said in his deeply programmed Southern style: "I want once more 'to express my gratitude for what you did for my brother. I didn't th.ink any stranger would or could do that. You see, Doc, that's what one does for his kinfolk." The psychiatrist was Dr. Joseph Pursch, whose pioneering work as nead of the U.S. Navy's Long Beach Alcohol Rehabilitation Hos- pital led to his treatment of Betty Ford, Buzz Aldrin, Sen. Herman Talmadge, Steve Howe and thou- sands of other people suffering from alcoholism -including the presidet\t's brother, Billy Carter. His all-nighter at the White House was Jimmy Carter's way of recog- nizing :Dr. Pursch as "kinfolk." Grant Miller, who started at first as a Lresbrnan, will contribute in a utility role. ' Kiefer said those six games in Janu- ary and February have allowed his club to enter Friday's Newport Elks Thuma- menl opener at home against Santa Ana Valley, well ahead of last year's pace. "It's taken away a lot of the question marks we might have bad going into the season:" Kiefer explained. "Athleti- cally, we're significantly imp1oved; it's just a matter of learning the nuances of the game." Kiefer also believes attitude is a key. "We've got to expect to win this year," Kiefer said. "When I first came here, baseball was just kind of there and you could tell the kids felt that way. But we've done a lot of things to create a special atmosphere and the kids are excited to be together. We have some guys who tasted success in football and the basketball team bdd a good season too We're looking to do the same kinds of Uungs."
