AVE EASY QUESTIONS
Franco has
constitution
to pass the test
• EOJTOR'S NOTE: Last week, Newport-Mesa
Unified S<hool District board member Judy
Franco proposed a requirement that afl
eighth-grade students pau a test on the U.S.
Constitution We asked her about the land-
mark ~ican document.
Which do you think is the most
important amendment?
I think each and every one of them
is important. l can't pick out JUSt one.
Each is important in its own right.
There has been a need for additional
amendments, and all of those are
important within the time frame they
were ratified.
Which amendments constitute the
Bill of Rights?
The hrst 10. There were actually 12
amendments, but the brM two weren't
ratified.
Is there any amendment you'd pro-
pose if you could?
Not at this point m time. U anything.
I would like those which we hdve, to
be equally enforced for all our people
by the courts.
Have you ever seen the Constitu-
tion?
I've been in Philadelphid, and I've
been to D C .. and yes, I've seen (it).
When was the first time you voted?
I think the first ti.me I could vote
was when Kennedy ran. I had JUSt
become a mother, and l bad an absen-
tee ballot.

An open letter to N rt-Mesa district teachers
I spent a day as a guest 5peak-
er last week at a district
school, and it made me realize
U)at you teachers a.re cheatirig
our students out of some valu-
able lessons. In a nutshell, you
teachers are JUSt too dam nice!
: In most cases, being nice is a
r&lly positive thing. But, some of
your actions are setting our stu-
di'nts up for failure in the work-
place or in their college educa-
tion.
, ln particular, your indulgence
is.making some student behavior
become a· habit and routine. In
my opinion, these habits will
cause the students as many prob-
lems as if they graduate without
the ability to read or perform oth-
er academic skills.
The four traits most desired in
employees, according to a wide
sampling of employers are: hon-
esty, dependability, punctuality
and the ability to work with oth-
ers.
No matter what the job, these
four traits are needed. If students
practice these traits beginning in
kindergarten, they will be quite
proficient by the time they grad-
uate. If they have no practice and
are used to receiving no conse-
quence when they fail to demon-
strate the traits, it will be hard to
break these habits when they
enter college and/or the work
world.
This could lead to chronic
unemployment and a We on the
streets. Or, even worse, a We
with mom and dad.
educate kids to be punctual, you
have to expect them to be at
class on time, every time. That
means students need to be at
their desks with all their supplies
out, ready to start at the time the
bell rings. In elementary scbool,
the students need to be in line,
having already gone to the bath-
room and gotten a drink of water,
when the bell rings.
U students thiJ).k it's enough to
be on the school grounds or at
the classroom door, they will car-
ry that practice Qver to the work-
place until they are fired for their
lack of punctUality.
Don't be nice. Teach them the
consequences' of being late .
Dependability means the stu-
dent should come to school each
and every day, even on the day
that a big assignment is due. ln
real We, an employee can't stay
home for a couple of days when-
ever a project is due. The due
date is the day the project must
be completed, regardless of other
circumstances. Being sick or inef-
ficient doesn't push back the
date.
Students often are in the habit
of whining for an extension, so
they expect each due date to be
continued once or twice. Teach-
ers need to make due dates rea-
sonable, and then stick by such
dates. Courts and newspapers
are sticklers for deadlines.
IDUClllOllLLY
SPlllll&
gay
geiser.:mdoval
This gets some students into
the habit of leaving all the work
to others.
And other students may get
into the habit of completing the
project without the input of
everyone ..
Teachers should assign a pro-
ject coordinator and give that
person the additional responsibil-
ity to report how tasks were
divided, and how group mem-
bers handled their tasks. Rotate
who acts as the coordinator so
everyone has practice at being
the manager.
Remind students that if they
fight in the workplace, they will
be fired immediately at most
businesses. Remind them that
most workplaces will not allow
name-calling or bad language.
School tS not the place to ingrain
these bad habits.
Finally, honesty includes
doing work during work hours.
Otherwise, the employee is steal-
ing his or her employer's time.
1Unespentdaydreaming,talking
to friends and doing personal
tasks is a theft from the employ-
er.
Think about how much time
each student steals from his
school day.
Aie yow students talking
about Friday night instead of lis-
tening to the class discussion? Is
the gossip disturbing those who
are trying to listen to the class
discussion? Aie yow students
working on their homework for
another class?
Don't let them cheat, because
they will get into the habit of
cheating their employer, too.
Keep them honest and on-task
by calling on students at random.
When your pattern ts to always
ask for volunteers, the habit of
the student to cheat you out of
your class time grows exponen-
tially. Students quickly lose
respect for those who let them
cheat.
Most of all, remind them of
the importance of making a good
first impression.
Let them shake your hand and
introduce themselves. Talk about
the importance of paying atten-
tion and adding to the conversa-
tion. Practice every day in class.
So teachers, if you want to

• All-Star basketball was at the

of five South All-Stars players in
double figures as the South

acknowledgment for the top
player on the losing team, room
permitting, of course. Who
knows how many times my
name ended up on the floor or
the editing rooms of newspapers
throughout Orange County.
With the recent Mr. Irrelevant
revelation in mind, I dedicate this
portion of the column to
everyone that has gone through
or is going through tough times
in the world or sports. I'll put the
winning teams at the bottom.
Enjoy!

school of thought. what do you rebid
wath this hand should partner
respond either one sp3de or one no

of gray hairs 1f you simply open the

this hand could play m any of the
three highest-ran)cjng suits or in no

enlisting partner's cooperation in
locating the best spot as lo bid the
fourth suit an lh1s case two clubs.

A -Al this vulnerability part.nu must
have a reasonable hand for the
major-suit takeout, since Nonh is
forcing you to bid at the two-level.
Under the circumstances. your hand
is just good enough lo invne a aamc
by bidding two no trump.

Your leJl-ha.nd opponent's opening

you. What do you biit now?
A • Yes, partner could cooceivably
bold a b.igh hean honor and the
queen of diamonds, making slam a
heavy favorite, but how are you
going lo find out? Unless you have a
clear 81J'Cement how to discover
whether partner has a heart stopper,
we think that a bid of five clubs is
the best way ou t of a difficult situa-
tion. Even that mighl not ma.le.el

TilC bidding has proceeded:

What action do you take?
A· Despite the fact that you have a
mfojmum opening bid, it 1s wrong to
pass. The feet that panner did not
respond in a major makes it likely
that he has some length in clubs.
Therefore. we would rebid the rea·

develops.
