Don't ever accuse the Costa
Mesa City Council of befug par-
ty poopers. Tonight, that crazy
cast of city leaders ~le·
brate St. Patrick's Day by fea-
turing Irish music and folk
dancing before their regular
meeting.
But, "there will be no green
beer,• said City Manager Allan
Roeder. "That's the only thing I
can assure you.•
Mayor Peter Buffa also plans
to hand over the mayor's gavel
to Mayor Pro Tern Gary Mona--
han for the night, because, Buf-
fa said, Monahan's Irish roots
take precedence over 'Suffa's
Italian background.
Meanwhile, residents who
watch the meetjng on cable
television will hear Irish music
during breaks. There also will
be appearances by other guests
of Irish decent.
"Everyo_ne has to wear green
or th0¥ don't get to speak (at
the podium),• Buffa joked.
Roeder says this isn't the first
time City Council members
incorporated a holiday theme at
a meeting. A few years back,
former City Councilman Jay
Humphrey brought fake beards
and Santa. Claus caps for every-
one to wear during the meeting
prior to Christmas.
"We put them on at the end
of the meeting for council com-
ments," said Roeder, explaining
that they didn't want to look sil-
ly during the serious portions of
the meeting.
The council hijinks begin at
6:30 p.m . at City Hall, 77 Fair

0 n June 20, 1970, Dave
Kun5t walked east out of
Waseca, Minn. with his
brother John and one pack mule.
Ahead lay four continents, 13
countries and three oceans. His
web site tells the true story of
becoming t}le Earthwalker.
Reaching New York City, the
brothers toucl)ed the Atlantic '
Ocean. Then they flew across it
to Lisbon , Portugal where they
touched the other side or the
Atlantic and got a new mule.
The KW1Sts would spend the
next couple of years crossing
Europe and penetrating Asia.
Acquaintances they made
along the way ranged from
Princess Grace and the mayor of
Venice to a Yugoslavian farmer
and an lranian camel driver.
Language presented inevitable
problems. But nowhere were the
consequences so djre as in
Afghanlstan.

· An Afghan newspaper ffiis-
takenly printed the brothers
were collecting money for
~CEF. It prompted bandits _to
attack them in the Hindu Kush
Mountains. A gunshot to the
heart killed John, and it would
take Dave's wounds four months
to heal.
After recovery, Kunst contin-
_ued his jowney with another
brother, Pete. Arrivmg in CalC'4t-
ta, India, qave touched the Indi-
an Ocean, flew acrqss it to Perth
and touched the ocean on the
Australian side. Halfway across
the island continent, Pete had to
return to work after a year of
·walking. Dave continued, meet-
ing his future bride on ~ way to
the Pacific coast.,
Kunst touched the Pacific
Ocean in Sydney, flew across it
to Los Angeles and touched it on
this side. Theo he walked from
Newport Beach, his current
home, b~ck to his Waseca, Minn.
starting point.
Kunst's ody~sey CQvered
14.450 miles, wore out 21 pair of
shoes and verified him as the
first hurnan;to walk around the
earth.

NEWPORT BEACH -It came
down to match play for nine
holes, something you would
expect with your father on a
municipal goU course with
nobody around.
But in Sunday's ·case; the nine

gle skin worth $62,000, the dif-
ference between the $150,000
payoff for the chamJ1ion, and the
$88 grand tor the runn~r-up.
Winner Bob Murphy, in the
longest playoff in Senior PGA
Tour history, caused some heart
rates to increase and put New-

Sigel was six strokes down with
eight to play in regulation.
"I was sort of getting dizzy,
going around and arbund and
around,• Sigel said or the nine-
hole playoff, the second longest
in PGA history, trailing only an
11-hole playoff in 1949 between
Cary Middlecoff and Lloyd Man-
grum, who were declared co-
winners at the Motor City Open. '
-
Neither player seemed con-,
cemed about potential darkness.
When Murphy's dramatic putt
ended the third Senior Classic
1 :40 after ESPN's scheduled air
time departure of 4 p.m ., there
was enough light for about
another three holes.
Play would have continued
today had darkness interrupted
the record playoff, which began
at 18, then traced its steps to No.
16 on three different trips, a total
of 27 holes on the day for Murphy
and Sigel. ·
For Murphy it ·was his first vic-
tory on the Senior Tour this year,
the fifth different player to win.
"We were out there so long, I
thought they moved the club~
house," said Murphy, who fought
like a true Irishman, because
Sigel had better distance off the
tee and thus an advantage in the •
playoff.
Murphy has been on the other
end, when a player sinks an
exceptionally long putt for a vic-
tory. •Brian Barnes made one
from 90 feet in the Senior Brltislr-
Open (in 1995)," said Murphy, :
recalling that event's finish at the
third playoff hole.
For Murphy and Sigel it was
their second career playoff
appearance in Senior Tour com-
petition.
Nine holes also seemed like
match play, the format used in
U.S. Amateur play, trophies both
Murphy and Sigel have won in
their careers. Both players are
also form.er Senior Tour Rookies
of the Year.

. Murphy fiipped his putter in the air, knocked
his hat off, then placed his hands on his head after
tnaking his winning putt on a tough, two-tiered ~7th green, Prior to that, there was no room for jok-
ing.
"I'm sort of a businessman when I'm out there,•
~d Murphy, who shot 1-over 72 on the day to fin-
ish the tournament 6-under, after starting the final
round behind one stroke.
For Murphy, it's a victory for more than the PGA
tecord books, but for everyone in the real world
who suffers from arthritis.
Murphy quit playing goU full-time because of
arthritis, but then was coaxed out of the ESPN
broadcast booth by colleague Lee TreVino, wbo
advised 'him to play full-time on the Senior Tour,
wtiich de}.ivers a physical fitness and therapy trail-

Murphy has 11 Senior Tour championships

l 997 earnings with the win, reaching $262,394
(third on the tow's money list). He bas won nearly
