A word of warning, though:
Don't let ~e police hear you.
Even a form of gambling as
seemingly innocuous as the 1997

against the law, a misdemeanor.
But police consider il a low prior-

seems to be complaining.
"We don't have time to quash

Quashing all the basketball

$1,000 pools with 100 partici-

full-time army.
With the NCAA tourney in full
swing and the Oscars just around
the comer, the fever is in the air,
seizing many who have never
seen a roulette wheel or a live
basketball game, and leaving
philosophical types to ponder the
whys of it all.

J.C. HOPPER
He helps the· grieving deal With deB:th
HEIS .
A friendly face on the cusp ol
the herealter.
AIDING TJiE AGGRIEVED
You might think J .C. Hopper
has an utterly grim and thank-
less job. The 25-year·old spends
his days steeped in death, toil-
ing in a clinically white room
among the recently deceased
and the pungent smell of chem-
icals. For thousands of paople
who don't know his name, he
will mark the final stop before
they are consigned to dust.
He likes the work. For the
year and a half he's worked at
Paciiic View Memorial Park in
Corona del Mar, the mortician
has found satisfaction in •help-
ing people grieve."
THE PROCESS
Hopper's work begins soon
after someone dies, when he
·removes the body from the
coroner's office or a home. He
is immaculately groomed and
wears a tie, and part of his job
is to comfort the recently
bereft.
The body then goes to the
"prep room" of the mortuary,
where Hopper lays it out on
one of two white tables and
makes an incision at the neck.
As blQod empties from· the
body through the opened vein,
sluicing down through the
grooves of the table toward a
drain, Hopper injects two and a
half gallons of diluted embalm-
ing fluid into the carotid artery.
This preserves the corpse for
viewing.
Usually the process takes a
couple of hol.trs. Contending
with a dlsease like jaWldice,
which lends the slun a sickly
yellow tint, requires more time.
The cabinets of the prep room
are full of colored dyes inte nd-
ed to restore the skin to a sem-
blance of its natural shade.
Often Hopper will massage
the body's hands until color
comes to them. Sometimes -he
applies a coat of makeup to the
race, though ·he likes to avoid
"that real made-up, cosmetic
look." .
YOU HAVEN'T LOOKED THiS
GOOD IN YEARS
When this grim back-r<>om
business is completed, the
body is dressed, casketed, and
wheeled out to be viewed by
the loved ones. Hopper's tri-
umph comes when they take
hiro aside to say the departed
"hasn't looked this good in
years."
"It lifts you up," he said.
"That will keep me happy for
weeks. I enjoy the fact that I
can do something to make a
person viewable."
Despite his pride in his
work, he dqesn't tall( about it
in certain social situations. "U
l'IJl around a bunch of wise:
crack people, l won't mention
it," he said. "I do try to keep it
low-key." ·
Hoppe~ a Long Beach
native who lives in a company-
provided apartment in Whitti-
er, studied Mortuary Science at
Cypress College alter a coun-
selor suggested the field would
synthesize tus interests in psy-
chology, cosmetology and art.
"It was real natural to me,''
he said. "It felt good. It felt•
comfortable ... I thought about
how you . could help people
with this." ·
At mortuary school Hopper
. met his girlfriend, who is an
embalmer at another Orange
County mortuary. In his spare
time, he plays the piano and
swing-dances
STILlNESS
Though he has become
accustomed to the sight of
corpses, some of them still dis-
turb turn.
Hopper recalled reconstruct-
ing the crushed head of a 4-
year-old boy who died in an
accident about a year ago.
"l think about turn a lot." he
said. "The fact that he has to dle
and he's only 4 years old -it
really hits you heavy in the
heart. Luckily the majority of
the time we get elderly people."
He added, "My ability to
make (the boy) presentable to
his father -that's what makes
it all worthwhile."

I'm still waiting for the movie to .end Anp.exatiOn gets
closer tO · r.eality T he stampede was an
essential part of old cow-
boy movies. The old band
said the herd was restless.
Sure enough, something
happened, and the herd took
off. The leading man, William S.
Hart, Hoot Gibson or Tom Mix,
finally got the herd turned
a.r:oUJ'}d so it was running in a
circle. Ip the meantime, the
.hero's best friend went down in
the middle of the rushing catUe
and was trampled to death. .
Well, people stampede, too. I
was once trampled by a herd of
people.
It was on the ~land of Saipan
during World War II. Iwo Jima
had not as yet been taken.
Almost every nightJapanese
planes from Iwo came down
and bombed us.
When the air raid siien went
off you climbed out of your cot
and went into your slit trench.
Mine bad been chopped out of

shorter than I, my feet stuck out
of the end of the trench. Big
deal. We didn't really worry
about getting hit by a bomb.
The odsfs were against it. We
did worry about all those
jagged pieces of anti-aircraft
shells that came thudding
down. Most of all, I worried
about the eight-hole latrine
about 12 feet from my slit
trench. U a bomb hit thpt
latrine, I was in serious trouble.
So, like that herd of catUe in
the movies, everyone was a ht·
tle nervous about air raids.
On this particular night, we
were watching a movie, "Lau·

That did it. All of a sudden,
for no other reason than that
yell, the enlisted men in the
back of the crowd were on their

sound. Ifi an instant, the rest of
the enlisted men were running,
too.
We officers down m front

•Los Amigos squeezes the
Eagles dry with four in the sixth,
two in the seventh in Estancia's
final tuneup before Pacific Coast
League play, starting Friday.
By Roger Carlson, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Estancia High's
Eagles learned a lesson which goes far
beyond baseball Monday afternoon. Lack
of communication will get you, .virtually
every time. You can count on it.
In a game which had no physical
errors on either side, Los Amigos High's
Lf)bos took advantage of multiple mental
errors by the Eagles.to pull out a 6-1 non-
league victory on the Eagles' diamond.
They virtually squeezed the Eagles
dry with four runs~ the sixth and two in
the seventh to overcome a . 1-0 Estancia
lead which had been produced by Mario
Romo, who ~tretched a single into a dou-
-ble, took third on an infield out, then
raced home when the ball squirted some
15 feet away from the catcher.
The toss back to the pitcher. covering
caught Romo's b~et and the Eagles
had broken into the ;;coring column in the
bottom of the fourth.
There were few other scoring opportu-
nities for Estancia after leaving the sacks
loaded in the first inning when Los Ami-
gos starter Adam· Schaeffer induced a 6-
4-3 double play to end ~e early_uprising.
Aside from Romo's leg-double in the
fourth, only an infield hit by Dave
Chavero in the fifth inning, a liner off
Schaeffer's knee (which KO'd the Los
Amigos starter) would break up an other-
wise evenUess offense.
The real noise for Estancia was with
the Eagles' defense, which sell-destruct-
ed with the assistance of the Lobos, who
squeezed every drop from the Eagles'
collective body. •
A high bouncer by Gre~ Madrid got it
started, a bunt single followed, then Chris
Charles doubled to left to tie·the game at
1-1.
What wa5 to follow would be three
straight squeeze plays, each scoring a run
on pit~es Estancia Coach Paul 'Iroxel
had called for pitchouts.
l"roxel's "pitchouts, • however, never
materialized as the Eagles not only
served up the fat pitch. but then could not
react well to the play.
Estancia, 1-4. entered on a high note,
with only the la4 of starter Tom Zenus
(be went the distance on Saturday) giving
way to an attack which 'Iroxel felt was
"ready" as they gird for Pacific Coast
League play, which begins Friday.
One· of 1i'oxel's true needs entering the
season was behind the plate and with a
C,hristmas special being • played out in
March in the presence of junior Victor
Garcia behind the plate. Thoxel was all
smiles.going in.
"There's no doubt," said Troxel, •Vic-
tor is as good as defensive catcher as I've
ever. had." Garcia just recently enrolled
at Estancia, having emigrated from Mex-
ico. . '
The coach would not got that far out
on the limb offensively, but the scorebook
summed up Thoxel's position there, as
well, with Garcia in the No. 4 slot
And Garcia did not disappoint defen-
sively, showing pure confidence and
savvy on every pitch, as if he had been
with the Eagles for years. '
Offensively he was 0 for 2 with a walk,
flying out to left and third.
And for much of the game starter
Steve Wilson showed some ma1or stndes
••
in the right direction. -
"He just needs some confidence," said
noxel of his big left-hander who ha6
trimmed what had been at one time an
awkward delivery mto a far stronger
stance.
"Over there in the bullpen he's like
Sandy Koufax." said Thoxel.
Koufax, however, aside from other
dSSets. usually got the message, and on
Uus day, that's where the Eagles were
hurt to the quick m several areas.
