on to higher education more fre-
quently, and by the year 2040
will riv.al whites as the dominant
ethnic group irJ the county, a
demographits expert told the
Latino Leadership Council on
Tuesday.
Jorge R. Sanchez, the director
of vocational education and insti-
,
tutional research for the Coast
Community College District, also
said the Latino f'.fopulation in
Costa Mesa schools has grown
nearly seven-fold since 1984.
Drawing on statistics fur-
nished by the state Department
of Education, Sanc~z said Lati-
nos comprised 5.7 Yc> of Costa
Mesa's school population in
1984, jumping dramatically to
45% of the population in 1995.
Yet while the number of 1,,,ati-
nos seems to be rising at every
level, Sanchez pointed to striking
disparibes m their populations -
and .their rate of increase -at
different Costa Mesa ·schools.
For example, Wilson Elemen-
tary, Whittier Elementqry and
Pomona Elementary schools
boasted Latino populations of
40% to 45% in 1984. In the fall of
1995, the.populations had mu~h
roomed to 80% or greater at the
three schools. •
That contrasts with Califorrua
Elementary. with a Latino popu-
lation of less than 10% in 1984
and still less than 20% in 1995.
Sanchez said if local Latino

• Problems with Cirque

officials to nix a May visit
from Circus Vargas.
By Susan Deemer, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Complaints
about noise fmm the Cirque du
Soleil is just one reason why Cir-
cus Vargas will not roll its ele-
phants and tigers into the Orange
County Fairgrounds this May.
Circus Vargas representatives
were denied a request to lease an
inside area of the Orange County
Fairgrounds last month because
fairgrounds officials say they are
sensitive to both animal wellare
issues and prior complaints about
the Girque.
"The Cirque parked too close
. to the houses," said Jacquehne
Exposito, marketing director for
Circus Vargas.· "The city doesn't
want a circus either to my knowl-
edge."
It's been 10 years since the cir-
cus brought its act to Costa Mesa,
but fairgrounds officials said the
proposed May 12 lo 14 show
would also be a disruption to the
ongoing weekend swap meet.
"We felt it probably was not
going to be fair to Circus Vargas,
to the neighbors or dnyone else in
tight of the continuing issues wtth
the Cirque,· said Becky Baily-
Findley, fairgrounds general
manager.
City Councilman Joe Erickson
said he was glad to see the fair-
grounds firlally listening to
numero~ complaints from frus-
, trated residents.
"It shows the fair board wants
to be a responsible 'and a good
neighbor," Erickson said.
Resident Chuck ·Huddleston,
whose Princeton Avenue home is
eclipsed by the blue and yellow
big top, believes the fairgrounds
decision was a good one.

As Pnnapal for a Day at the
Costa Mesa school, Weichman
expenenced a welcoming cheer
trom the students and a taste of
what a principal faces on a daily
basis.
Parents and community mem-
bers were offered the principal's
seat for the day at schools through-
out the Newport-Mesa Unified
School District in order to give par-
uopanls a closer look at school ille
and to build a partnership with
local businesses.
Weichman~ who sells hoUlies in
Mesa Verde where the school is
located, volunteered for the one-
day principal position to become
more familiar with the public
school system.
"I'm very impressed because
there are multitudes of computers
m the rooms," said Weichman, a
partner of Real Estaters 'in Costa
Mesa. "The classrooms are in bet-
ter condition then I thought they
were. I'm overwhelmed about the
cleanliness of thiS school. H
Besides a tour of the grounds,
Weichman observed Principal Bar-
bara Harrington talk to a ehild who
was misbehaving and sat in on a
fifth-grade government lesson
dealing with how the U.S. Con-
gress works.
Weichman, who is vice pr_esi-
dent of Mesa Pride, involved in the
Neighbors for Neighbors program
and has been known to dress up as

Newport Beach sports agent

temporary prindpal position at
Corona del Mar High School With
the belp of Principal Don Martin,
agreed that he was impressed with
the faculty, administration and
students.
Steinberg, whose well-known
clients include football greats Troy
Aikman and Steve Young as well
as Olytnpic ~ast Kerri Strug,
helped inte~ew a ,potential coun-

cussing curriculum choices for

career and even signed a few

Steinberg, whose own father was a
principal.
Before eating 'a quick veggie

Encountering students at
TeWinkle confirmed my fears
that little about middle school
has changed.
The students told Assistant
Principal Mike Murphy and
myseU brutal accounts of dirty
words spoken, cuts in the lunch
line and even a11 occasional slap.
To their credit, school admin-
istrators seem to do everything
possible to diffuse the little prob-
lems rising from the students'
adolescent melodrama.
Among some of the school's
ground rules: no makeup, shirts
must be tucked in and under-
wear must be worn but not visi-

ln.....adcUtion to eruorcing the
rules.Murphy took the concerns
of the students very ·seriously,
explaining that any incident
could be the catalyst for a more
heated battle later.
The major incident of the day
involved a sixth grader who
learned from another student the
meaning of a Spanish phrase ·
that demeans one's mother and
then said it to an eighth-grade
girl until she ran after him and
hit him in the back.
The students }lad solemn
faces, but were more or less
unrepentant. One boy said he
didn't really say what it meant,
the other boy couldn't explain
why he had said it and the girl
said. that when she hit him, be
got what he deserved.
But I knew there was more .
going on. .
These little guys had to
impress ea~ other in order to
surv'ive -the same way a girl
nearly twice their .,size had the
choice of putting them in their
place or being humilialed.
I could rememl:Jer cleaily that
in middle school, the disgrace of
not returning words with words
or threats with punches applies ·
both to males and females.
You can't let someone weaker
than you insult your mother. (See
how easy it is to lose perspec-
tive?)
Luckily, Murphy w:as the one
to dole out the sentences: the
name-caller and hitter were sent
home while the student who
taught the phrase was told to
limit his peer language instruc-
tion to clean words.
Justice: swift and sure.
1 got off free the only time'I
faced my junior high school prin-
cipal across his desk.
The meeting stemmed from
an argument with a substitute
geometry teacher who insisted
we refer to our regular teacher
as Mr. Chaffins.
I was determined that some-
body had to stand up for our
class.
"He lets us call him Gary!"
After insisting 'he list the
crimes in question before I . .
would agree to sit in the hallway -
for the rest of the hour, I
received a one-way ticket to the
office. •
I'll never forget the thrlli-t had
sitting next to all the school
"hoods" who seemed to live in
the office and giving my friends
high-fives through the glass. •
Sure, 1 got a short lecture from
the principal, but my qean histo-
ry kept him from putting it on
my record ..
So, maybe I wasn't the best
cancUdate for school principal,
after all. It's too hard for me not
to empathize with these growing
teenagers who struggle daily to
hnd the right-answers to the
social and academic questions
facing them.
Who can blame them il they
feel like they .need a little bit of
hp gloss to.get through all that? •

five walks and four hit batsmen
issued by t-4ustang hurlers, which
helped the Lobos threaten in all but
one at-bat.
Indeed, the Lobos (3-3) managed
just five hits, including two in the

3-2 lead.
Mesa, however,--had 10 hits in the
first three frames, taking a 4-3 lead
in the second and expanding that to
