According to Wolfe, Glover 1S a

became the old, black tap

To carry out tradition, these
newly crowned grandfathers of

like Glover had all the past

Segerstrorn last week to remove
21 Canary Island pine trees, 11
Tipu trees, five Queen Palms and
eight Eucalyptus trees from an
area around a future "sculpted"

halves of South Coast Plaza.
· It is part of landscape artist
Kathryn Gust~son's vision that in
15 to 20 years pedestrmns \ltilI lie
able to look from the bridge into
the fronds of the rare Cuban Roy-
al Palms. The existing trees would
obscure parts of the bridge and
reduce its visual 'effect, according
to Segerstrom. ·
All but 13 of the 45 trees bemg
removed are on private property.
However, the city has established

palm trees. -Somers said she doesn't want to
lose mature trees ln the area. If
Segerstrom would like to remove

should be saved, she said.

COSTA ?viESA -The youth,
group ·Speak Outt· is one step
away from gettmg an ordlnance
passed that would prohibit self-
service tobacco displays,
although. the proposal still has its
detractors.
lt's·been a long road for the
group of Estan~a High School
students who took on the task
about a year ago through a Camp
Fire, Boys and Girls Club pro-
gram.
The ordinance had been shot
down last year when Peter Buffa
sat on· the council. Speak Out!
waited to reapproach the council
until Linda Dixon had been elect-
ed . Dixon provided the swing
vote Monday, approving the first
· reading ~f the more "~~iness
friendly" ordinance. Mayor Gary
Monahan and Councilman Joe
Erl~kson voted no.
Under the proposed ordinance,
1t will be illegal for businesses to
sell tobacco products through
sell-service displays or vend.mg
machines. Rather, cigarettes and.
other tobacco products must be
sold by a person. ·
In an effort to make the ordi-
nance more business friendly,
exceptions were made for tobac-
co shops, cigar lounges and some
other businesses specializing in·
tobacco sales.
Despite the teens' efforts to
win more support for the ordi-
nance, ther'e were those who still
opposed it on philosophical
grounds.
Residents Ernie and John
Feeney spoke against the ordl-
na.nce. Ernie Feeney said she felt
the ordinance unfairly punis.tled
businesses for the mistakes of a
few. She said she also thought it
was the wrong approach to take
to addr~ the issue and could
create enforcement issues.
· ·when you have someone
who's breaking the law, you don't
make another law, you just
enfo~e the one you got," Feeney
said.
Feeney said she and her bus·
band felt so strongly about the
ordinance that they are refusing
to shop in Costa Mesa because
they don't want their tax dollars
going to an "anti-business" city.
She also criticized th~ Costa .
Mesa Chamber of Commerce for
not sticking up for s:mall business-
es. ·
Chamber President Ed Faw-
cett said that it was. because of the
chamber's involvement that the
ordinance is being made more
business friendly.
Speak Out! meJl}ber Aivan
Nguyen said the youth group has
worked intensely with the cham-
ber. to address issues raised by
such businesses as HI-'Il.mes Cel-
lars Smoke Shack.
Nguyen said she thought
Peeney's concerns were unfound-
ed.
•Tuey were speaking about
small bus~esses, but I didn't see
any small businesses coming up
to speak .about the ordinance,"
she said.

Rberglass boat building
pioneer John Norek died
on April 27 at the age of 96.
1 Many people now living in
the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa
·area probably don't know his
name, however Norek played
a significant role in·t.he
development and history Of our
community, and the boat-bwJd-

Norek was born m Chicago
in 1903 and moved to NeWJ>Ort
Beach in 1920. He played
semi-pro baseball in the 1920s
~d worked al;>oard a lofal ~erqQl fishing boat during
the off-season.
After ~ball, he decided to
build a small 26-foot.open
fishing boat that he could
charter. The boat design and
craftsmanship in the b(>at was
adnured by many And•'he was
solicited to bwld duplicates.
That's when it all started.
He built boal!) on the Jot next
door to his home at 1717 Central
St., which is now called Balboa
Blvd. After
WWII. he
designed and
constructed a
65-foot purse
semer for
fishing
swordfish, sea
bass and other
commercial
f1sh •
However,
he wasagam
plagued by
people constantly asking him to
build them a boat. That's when
he got out of the fishing business
and into .the business or building
boats.
He moved into a shop and
boat yard ad1at:ent to what is
now Uf'e Newwrt Harbor

Even joilinalists, trained in

lToxel was one of mine and I
·think he knew it.
I am, of course, hardly alone_
on that count, as the overflow
crowd estimated at 700 mourners
at his memorial Service
Wednesday illustrated.
Had the occasion not
coincided with a bearty schedule
· of high school baseball
throughout Orange County,
attendance fiwes would surely
have reacl}ed four figures.
My duties with the Daily Pilot
allowed me to appreciate 'lfoxeJ's
personality, his impact on kids,
the unabashed joy he projected
on any sporting event, and his
unflinching pride for Estancia
High. I thought I.had come to
know him pretty well in the 10
years our paths crossed.
But, as I talked with people
about him m recent weeks, first
for his Daily Pilot Sports Hall of.
Fame article and, sadly, in the
days following his death, I
encountered a few surprises.
I was largely unaware of his
passion for music, his new-found
religious commibnent and his
upbringing in what his brother
termed a violent, dysfur1ctional
family. There was complexity
behind the mustache that
shielded his smile.
He had hinted about the

with Ted Thal, who owned
1lialco Fiberglass. Fibergtass
technology was in its infancy
when Norek first apphed a coat
of glass and resin over a wooden
hull.
He was probably not the first
to lai fiberglass over wood, but
that s when he had the idea to
do away with the wood. Shortly
thereafter, Norek constructed a.,

fiberglass, a boat that many
believe was the first or second
boat ever to be solaly construct-

U it wasn't the very first, it
was certainly on the cutting

an industry. .
That first boat was called a
