By Christopher Goff ard, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Seven more birds
were found slaughtered by pellet gunfire
.,. on Monday morning in TeWmkle park,
·marking the second attack of its kind in
three days.
Parks Department employees found
the recent batch of carcasses as they
made early-mommg rounds at the
Arlington Drive sanctuary: Three white
ducks. Three mallard ducks. And one
·black-crowned night heron.
\.All were riddled with the same pellets,
it appeared, that killed four ducks and a
goose and seriously injured two other
geese over the weekend, authorities said.
•Whoever's doing this is just a real sick
person," said Michelle Berger, a Costa
Mesa resident who helped rescue two of
the ortginaJ geese. •They're not choosing
one type of bird over the other. They're
just shooting birds."
Police said they have beefed up patrols

seek suspects in a Harbor Boulevard
shooting on Friday with possible racial
overtones that left one local youth with
a bullet in the spine and his compan-

Police are also seeking a motive in
the late-night attack that began with a
heated verbal exchange between a
carload of whites and another carload
of Latinos.
The victims -a 17-year-old juve-
nile and· 19-year-old Thomas Harris,
both of Costa Mesa -were sitting in a
Honda Ovic around 11 :40 p.m. in the
parking lot of Jack in the Box on Har-

when a white Mustang pulled up
alongside them, said Costa Mesa
police Lt. Ron Snii.th.
Two Latinos in the Mustang
exchanged threats with the occupants
of the Honda, and the Mustang's dri-
ver fired three shots that tore through
the pther car, Smith said.
One or the bullets entered the back
of Ute juvenile, lodging in his spine,
while Harris took a shot to the left
knee.
The juvenile re!lli;l.ined at Hoag

claims the incident began .with the
Latinos yelling racial slurs. ·
But he said he ctid not get a good

policy for special education Tues-

Bonnie Swann, director of spe-

district is already following but
that needed to be spelled out to
protect the d.istnct from legal bat-

Newport Beach's PeQgy'-Gene . Evans celebrates 103 years, while
Costa Mesa's Anna May Dunbar turns 107. •
By Alessandra Djuridou, Daily Pilot
Peggy Gene Evans and
Anna May Dunbar each had a
birthday Tuesday, and between
them, they have celebrate9, 210
times.
Evans, a Newport Beach res-
ident and former professional
dancer, celebrated her 103rd
with a lunch at the Newport
Beach Tennis Club.
"I feel like I'm 60, • she said
as she sat at a large round table
a stack of birthday cards by her
plate, her chair festooned with
colorful balloons.
She was surrounded by well-
wishers from the Happy
Hooters, a dance troupe she
joined 20 ye~ ago at age 83.
She was active in the hooters
until just recently.
"She's marvelous. She was
my mentor," said Janet Bryant,
81, who was in Evans' first Hap-
py Hooters rlass. "The teacller
stopped her and said, you've
been a dancer, and she said yes,
I've been in Phantom of the
Opera with (.on Chaney.• .
Evans began her dancing
career in 1904, at age 10. She
went on to dance in movies,
standing in for stars like Norma
Talmadge and "America's
Sweetheart" Mary Pickford.
· "She was a girl then," Evans
said. "So was I."
And Evans is still something
of a youngster, at least when
compared to Dunbar, who just
" celet,)rated her 107th, or so she
thinks.
"I don't know how old I am
now,• she said jokingly as she
sat on the living room couch in
her Mesa Verde home. "I have
to figure it out.•
But the keen observer who
takes a look at her signed pho-
tograph of Thomas Alva I;d.ison
and his wife, both of whom ·
were acquaintances, can figure
she has been on the planet for
at least seven decades.
She was born in Dalton,
~'--,
Mass. in 1890, and there she
met her first husband, ·Howard
Franklin, who later became a
movie producer and moved her
to Hollywood. '
"I've seen a lot of people
come and go," Dunbar said.
And some were more famous
than others. Lana Turner and

The action in the press room
was frenetic as presenters and
often-~ewildered winners were
·fed to us. It always appa.\led me
that the technical award win.ners
would be virtually ignored by
reporters who would give all
their attention to the presenters
-usually actresses with consid-
erable decollatage who would
try to retreat to the background
so-the sound or cinematographer
winners they were shepherding
could be the center of attention.

The winner receives only
prestige that carries over until
the whole procedure is repeated
a year later. I have yet to win
because I tend to, go with long-
sho\s -wlli.ch also causes some
problems for me in Las Vegas.
Although I've grown a little
cynical about Hollywood's orgy
of self-congratulation -especial-
ly since th~ movie business has
beeh taken over by various cor-
porate conglomerates -it still
always brings back vivid memo-
ries of the dozen years I attended
the Academy Awards when I
was coverirtg Hollywood for sev-
eral newspapers and magazines
that the people who make up the
invitation list wanted to court.
you know how it is.
Sure I know, but it was a good
run while it lasted . The practice
in those years (1 don't know if
this is still true) was to give the
''AH list journalists a press cre-
dential and two guest tickets in
the auditorium. After the first
year, I always gave away my
auditorium tickets and watched
from 1he press room where the
winners and presenters came
after they left the stage. ·
Sometimes there would be
small backs\ag.e dramas that
transcended all the empty ques-
tions shouted at the winners.
The most Vivid to me was the
night Jane Fonda won the best
actress award for "Comirig
Home" and Michael Cimono's
"The Deer Hunter" won best
picture. .
When the TV lights were off
and the cameras were being
packed away, Fonda and
Cimono got into a fascinating·
and acrimonious argument a,l)out
the liberties with historical .accu-
racy Gimono had taken in his
film about the Vietnam war. I

Except ~ibly for an invita-
tion to a presi~ntial inaugural
ball -or tickets to an Angel 1 World Series. -there's no
greater one-upmanship than an
invitation to the Academy
Awards. It's a sure grabber to
drop into cocktail party conversa-
tion. ·
I made the "A" list mosUy
because I worked for the Nation-
al Observer, the weekly exten-
sion of the Wall Street Journal.
When the Observer went under,
I continued to write about motion
pictures for several highly vis\ble
national magazines, but I .
became svspect. And when
entertainment became secondary
to other subjects I wrote about, I
was dropped instantly from the
invitation list. My old buddies in
the industry didn't return phone
calls when I wanted to bring my
aunt and uncle from Missouri lo
visit a working set. Nothing per-
sonal, Joe, they would say when
· I finally tracked them down, but.
Although my wife and chil-
dren went frequently, we also
used these tickets for people who
wollld really be blown away by
the chance to go. One of the
most ecstatic was a student of
mine at UCI named Stephen Sil-
verman. He will be out hef"e from
New York next month to be hon-
ored at UCI's annual Lauds &
Laurels banquet. He has pub-
lished a half-dozen books -the
most recent a biography of film
director Stanley Donen -and is
currently an editor of People
magazine. He likes to remind me
that I didn't give him an "A" in
my non-fiction writing class, an
oversight he was able to forgive
after his invitation to the Acade-
my Awards.
Many memories of those
nights remain vivid. Journali$ts
arrive the same way the stars do,
and there is nothing quite like
taking that long walk past the
screamers iR the bleachers who
have been waiting all day to see
their idols and let out a "naaah"
of displeasure followed by dead
silence when they realize you
aren't anyone important. ·
Then there was the nighJ Lee
Marvin.won as best actor and
left a group of well-wishers in
the lobby after the ceremonies to
come over and say hello \o me. _I
had just done a magazine piece
on him and he remembered,

Improvements will soon take·
shape along Old Newport Boule-
vard, that forgotten stretch of road
alongside Newport Boulevard at
the Newport-Costa Mesa border.
The City Council Morlday
approved a plan, which has been
in the works for years, to infuse
the . wayward business district
with a better tenant mix and pret-
tier streetscape. A committee
comprised of council members,
business own ers and residents
drafted the proposal.
The area has been. standing by
for revamping since a 1988 city-
wide general plan update calle.d
for a closer look at Old Newport
and other districts. Since theri.
the plan has gotten stuck in poll-
. tics and postponed for other pri-
orities. · ·
The new plan allows land uses
such as hospitals and convales-
cent homes not permitted in other
areas. It encourages developers to
combine lots by offering high.er
floor-area ratios -more building
space per lot.
Also included in the plan:
• Eliminating car repair shops
and gas stations, while limiting
vehicle and boat sales business-
es.

sound. Words get in the way sometimes and sounds express the
triumph and glee, the inner restoration and renewal, that comes to
~e people of God who travel the way of the Cross from Caivary to

By Barry" Faulkner, Daily f1lot
COSTA MESA -They don't strike
fear and they don't clear the fences,
but the Costa Mesa High Mu,stangs
are nothing if not opportunistic.
That's exactly what Coach Doug
Deats' hitters proved Tuesday, lashing
out 16 hits en route to a 17-5 home
baseball victory over Pacific Coast
League and cross-town rival Estancia.
"We haven't had this big of an
offensive day this season and, to be
honest, I don't anticipate many more,"

Estancia rally cut the Mesa lead to
one. The Eagles (1-5-1, 0-1-1 in
league) had aiso utilized a pair of dou-
ble plays and one caught stealing to
help keep things from getting out of
hand.
But Mesa (5-2, 1-1) moved things
quickly to that stage in the third, post-

before exiting in the fourth with a

Pelter finished 3 for 5 with four RBI,
while icammates Julius Vasquez and
Robert Gloster were each 2 for 4 with
two RBI.
Al Lambert and Alex Marquez also
had a pair of hits for the winners.
The Mustangs batted around in the
third and the fourth, adding seven
runs on six ruts in the latter frame, as
noxel wore a path to the mound to
look for answers.
Joe Jeff ~rs had the answers on the
mound for Mesa, battling through
arduous innings in the third and fifth,
in which the Eagles posted all of their
runs and five of their six hits.
Jeffers, however, required just 40
pitches (30 for \trikes) to retire the
Eagles in the othet five frames, notch-'
ing his second win in as many deci-
sions. Of Jeffers' 79 pitches, only 23
missed the strike zone.
Estancia senior Mario ROIJlO had a
two-run single and drove in another ·
run with a groundout, while Eagle
catcher Victor Garcia had a pair of hits
and an RBI.
The Mustangs, however, had seven
players join the hit parade. •

Deats explained. "We have guys who

• Woodbridge High 's Pashalides tosses
four-hitter as Sea Kings drop to 0-2.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -Southpaw Jeff Pashalides of Wood-
bridge High had never won a Sea View League
baseball game before Tuesday, yet he signed a
letter of intent with Stanford 'prior to the season.
Corona del Mar found out why Pashalides, a
senior who sat out all of last season because of a
broken vertebra, was so coveted by four-year col-
leges in the winter. ,
Even more, Pasbalides only three weeks ago
was diagnosed with mononucleosis, so his dura-
bility was a question mark.
On Monday, Pashalides received clearance
from his doctor to play in a Hlimited role," accord-
ing to his father. But his outing was anything but
restricted. in fact, he limited Cd.M to just four hits
in a complete game as the host Warriors defeated '
CdM, 3· 1, at Windrow Park.
The Sea Klngs (2-5, 0-2 in league), who staved
off Woodbridge rallies in every inning after the
first, had a chance to knock Pashalides out in the
sixth, but the dontinant left-hander worked out of
a bases-loaded, no-out situ-
ation, allowing only a run in
the inning. ·
Woodbridge (6-2, 1•1)
stranded 10 runners in the
last four innings, including
leaving the bases full in the
fourth and fifth.
Corona de! Mar left-han-
der Ryan L,ewis, a jµnior,
pitched into the fifth inning
during a high-wire act, scat-
tering eight hits and walk-
ing four, yet yielding no
earned runs.

CdM Coach Joe Koh said. •
,.He tired in the sixth, and I was hoping we could
score with the bases loaded and nobody out, but
we didn't capitalize on that opportunity.· ·
CdM was hurt in the first inning on a fly ball
lost in the sun by its center fielder, a play that
should have been the third out in the inning.
Instead, David Castle's fly ball was droppedand a
run scored. :
Woodbridge's Nie Recchia followed with his :
first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left ;
field to give the hosts an early 3-0 edge. •
"Looking back, that could've been a 1-'0 game :
if we catch the ball in the first inning, but the sun :
had a little something to do with it,• Koh said. :
"You can't fault the kid for that. It's just one of :
those things."
Pashalides, who struck out nine and walked
three, walked the first two Cd.M batters in the
sixth, Ryan Achterberg and Royal McMackin.
Eric Wiethom followed with a run-scoring single
to center, then Ty Harper loaded the bases when
he reached first safely on a sacrifice bunt.
Pasha.tides' throw pulled second baseman
Eddie Garcia (5-foot-6), who was covering first,
off the bag. .
But Pashalides fanned Mark Hatfield, and Pre-
ston Altobello's Dy ball to right field wasn't deep
enottgh to score McMackin from third. Pashalides •
punched out Matt Larson on a cwveball to end !
the inning. :
Larson, a sophomore right-bander, relieved :
Lewis and chalked up a strikeout on all five outs
he recorded. Koh said before the season Larson
has the best arm in the program.
~ Achterberg broke up Pashalides' no-hit bid in
the third inning with two out, when he reached on

Boston skyline and .waterways
was pri$tine and glorious,
Friday's arrival of snow
flurries and a persistent drizzle
all day on Saturday begged for
such a morning. ·
However beautiful the
world around me, I need
nothing to lift my spirits as
today is the first morning in 21
years th~t I have awakened as
a national champion. having
won·the polo vault in the·USA
lrack & Field National Indoor
Championships here on ..
Saturday.
Over 1,100 athletes
competed in the three-day
event with five-year age
groupings from age 30 through
90-plus.
Many times since I left
' Atlanta have a considered
abandoning my mission to
compete and win the World
Championships in Durban,
South Africa on July 22.
My 1996 Atlanta Olympic
Games ~oaching commitment
and the extensive catch-up
following my return had left
me questioning the relative
importance of such a lgffy
goal.
Knowing this, my wife and
coach, Kay, suggested that we
schedule a few test bencmarks
to evaluate progress and
' viability of success. _
With age, injuries play ~
key role in training as well as
competition planning.
It is suggested that for ~very
year away from competition .
that the athlete needs one
month of conditioning before
returning.
Our first test of
preparedness was set for the
ttS~ack ~ Field Pole Vault
Development Summit in Reno,
Nev. on Jan. 24.
We selected this event
because over 400 pole vaulters
· fiom around tha world would
be competing and the fact that
it was nearly six months to the
day from the World
Championships.
Ten days previous to the
competition I was still unable
to vault due to a strained
groin, as well as an irtitation to
-· •
boug Sparks
the abdominal attachments
caused by nearly four million
pounds --0f weight lifted and
hundreds of high bar inve!Sion
drills in weighted training
pants.
Two very painful cortisone
injections cleared up the
problem and I was able to win
my division and finish second
overall in my group, being ·
beaten by a 32-year-old.
Making it an even more
memorable time was the vault
of Newport Beach resident Ted
Whelan, a senior at Mater Dei
High School, who cleared 15T2
for his first 15-foot vault in the
elite division of the high school
competition. A coach's pride
goes deep after a four-year
commitment.
• Aside from the perks ...
Upon my return from Reno
and seemingly heqJ.thy. I·
increased my workload as the
decision was made to compete
in our USA National Mastws
Indoor Championships.
It didn't take long for my
body to rebel with a nagging
hamstring ~tation that also
required another cortisone
injection before leaving for
Boston.
On the plane I st}.id I
probably only 70-30 in being
able to complete the
competition without injury.
My orthopedic surgeon,
who keeps putting me back
together, assured me that I
was going to be 100%.
I can tell you from an
athlete's perspective that my
opinion is more important than
his until proven otherwise, ·
which of co~e he (Dr.
Almquist) did.
I· had a short vaulting
session last Sunday, the first
in three weeks because of the
hamstring injury, which left
the entire back of my left leg
horribly bruisect. The practice
went weU, but I was very sore
the rest of the week and
considered canceling the trip.
During wannups Saturday
morning I started to feel some
twinging and cramping in my
leg.
Though concerned, I was
determined to pace myseU and
at least clear a height in the
meet itself as opposed to being
injured in the w.armup.
In our final field of 16, one
athlet, strairied a groin musqe
and another a hamstring
during warmup, a very
unsettling occurrence
considering my state of affairs.
But then s_omething
' miraculous happened.
The more I began to do, the
stronger the leg felt.
In fact it felt so good that I
ended up vaulting on the
biggest and stiffest pole~ l had
used since the season's end
last year. Even this mom.iilg I
had absolutely no pain.
So how important is
accomplishment?
Outside of this very limited
arena the event is basically
mearungless.
However, to me it is very
.significant because· adversity
and teamwork with the one
I love played a pivotal role.
In addition, I am considered
to be more of a coach than a
pole vaulter, which I
absolutely detest.
In all fairness, the knock on
me has been "he was a great
vaulter in the past, but no
longer is serious eliough to
discipline the diet and balance
his overtraining ways."
This weekend I got rev~nge
on my critics, gained some
sell-respect,· and along the
way, created a new little
monster in Kay.
As we were leaving~
coliseum after winning~y nrst ~
national championship in 41
years, Kay turned and said, ·
"I've made a decision and I
want you to help me decide
which event I could compete
in during the World
Champjonships."
Whether she ultimately
decides to compete or not is
irrelevant.
It is that spirit tells me that,
yes, it is worth the effort and
sacrifice.
And with that the circle on
the 'calendar around July 22
looms even larger.

. By Molly Yanity, Dai/y'Pilot
• NEWPORT BEACH -It isn't
something you can hear, but it ris-
es up in the cheers from the play-
ers on the court. You can'r see it,
either, but it exudes through the
srhiles ean:ied after a blistering
kill or a perfectly placed block.
It's chemistry, and for the first
time in the young s.eason, New-
port Harbor's boys volleybah
coach, Dan Glenn, saw lots ol it
from his team as the Sailors
trounced the visiting Marina High
squad 15-3, 15-10, 15-6 in non-
league play.
"That first game was probably
the best we've played all year,•
Glenn said. "We were just click-
ing.ff .
The clicking began when
junior Scott Archbold took the
Sailors from 0-1 to 7-1. Archbold
delivered rocket serves over the
net, and when the Vikings could
handle them, beautiful passes by
Matt Jameson would be set by
Travis Nelson, and slammed
down hard by Dan Mesenbrink
and Adam Hearlson. ·
-The Sailors .didn't just look
-sharp. they looked like they were
having fun, slapping fives and
patting each other on the back.
"It's good to see us play well,•
Glenn said of his 4-7 team.
Jameson led the offensive
attack with 11 kills to go along
with his skilled passing. Hearlson
sent down seven, as did Arch-
bold, and Mesenbririk had six:
The Sailors dominated the first
·and third games but let Marina ~
the score twice in the second
before pulling away b0hind the ·
serves of Hearlson and Nelson.
"It's nice to get a win and give
us some momentum going intb ·

By B,ahy Faulkner, Daily Pilot
HUNTINGTON BEACH -
Corona del Mar High boys volley-
ball coach Steve Conti hopes
there is a lesson to be learned
from the Sea Kings' 15-5, 15-6,
15-11 nonleague loss at powerful
Huntington Beach High Tuesday.
One other than it's time !o play
someone besides the Oilers, that
is.
"I was hoping we'd.j:>l.8y a little
better than we did against them
Safur_d!ly," Conti said of Tuesday's
rematch of a 15-10, 15-4 defeat at
the hands of the top-ranked team
-in· Orange County in the semifi-
nals of Orange County Champi-
onships. ..... ·
"l3ut the bottom line is, we did-
n't show· up \o play as a team. We
had the opportunity to play one of
the elite teams, but we showed no
heart and no pride. l just ask~
our kids where the Corona del
Mar boys volleyball team was
tonight (in the postmatch huddle).
To lose .....with some effort-is
respectable.L but we didn't even
do that. I was beyond mad. I was
disappointed."
Conti, however, said his Sea
Kings (3-1 and ranked No. 4 in
the county) could learn some-
thing from Tuesday's thorough
drubbing at the hands of the No.
DEEP SEA
TUESDAY'S COUNTS·
• Newport ~nding -2 boats, 37 anglers. 4 sand bass, 1 rockfish, 17 sculpln,
58 barracuda, 2 white croaker, 1 bat ray, 27 mackerel.

\
1-ranked hosts (5-0).
"Everything is a learning· situa-
tion," Conti explained. "We need
to realize we can't come out like
this against the tougher teams in
the Sea View League."
Huntington Beach's first team
had little trouble with the Sea
Kings in the first two games.
· ·And even with all six starters
sitting out the third game, the Sea -·
Kings never led. CdM did man-
age to turn a 6·0 deficit in.to dead-
locks at 9-9 and 10-10, but Hunt-
ington's reserves ptdled away to
end the agony.
"We knew we were playing
their second t.eam, ~ Conti said.
Blair Hoppe had 12 kills to pace
the visitors.
