But I also lived overseas in thr~e coW\tries (Venezuela, Chile and Liberia) where the entire country's schoolchildren wore uniforms, both in the private and public schools. Jn fact, they were all the same color (navy blue in Chile and Venezuela, white/black in Libena). The School Board has adopted the school calendar for 1999-2000. Classes start Sept. 9 and end June 20, 2000. I figure that board mem- bers wanted to make the gradua- tion announcements look good. Winter break is from Dec. 18 to Jan. 3. Spring break runs April 15 through April 23 There are a . couple of conference days and preparation days but the eight teacher in-service days of three years ago are nusS1.0g. The school board also voted Tuesday to hire a company to• conduct a phone survey m the next two months to determine the public's perception of the condition and neens of the dis- trict's facilities. The plan is to call about 600 people. The results will be presented along with the findings of the architectural firm, which will teU us what the firm sees as each school site's needs and how much the work would cost. Why not teU us what the needs are and how much it will cost before you take the survey? U the public imds out how bad some school sites are, and still won't pay for it, then we're in trouble. Right now, community members might not know what it is like to spend your day hoping the ceiling b.le won't fall on your head, or that the black goo leak- ing from the air conditioner won't get on your skin. They may not realize that you can't have a computer Jab wtth- out a room to put it in. EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKING gay geiser-sondoval established. The trust may or may not be there. The hottest topic of the night Tuesday was whether or not stu- dent motivation will go to rack and ruin if there is more than one valedictorian .. That took about tout different motioris before the board decided on its first reading of the change. Beginning next year, the dis- trict will honor the top 2% of the graduating class. I have trouble perceiving the harm in Jetting more than one student be in the limelight. My bi~gest frustration of the rught was the reconfiguration of the Estancia Zone. No zone has more of a mishmash of grade lev- els and boundary lines. No zone has as many portables. It is my belief that the Estancia Zone has always received the Band-aid approach to facilities corisidera- tions, so the situation gets more convoluted with every change. parent concerns, they want neighborhood schools, where' busing ls not required. How ean we make that happen? We need to start over. If 75% of the zone's student population lives on the West Side of Fairvlew Park, then the middle school needs to be down there. There aren't enough kids to have two middle schools, which is up for study next year. . Make Rea School a seventh- and eighth-grade mitidle school, and make all the other schools kindergarten through sixth grades, with boundaries that let most of the kids walk to their neighborhood school. TeWinkle School, which can holtSe more kids, could be a magnet or a fundamental ele- mentary school, available to those throughout the d.lstrict If parents believed that their children would get to go to lhe same neighborhood school with- out fear of constant revision$ every year, they could see the benefit of a one-time change to make things right. The parents decided their No. 1 goal was to preserve Estancia High School as a ninth-through 12th-grade school. They are con- vinced that the school will not hold the projected population of a seventh-through 12th-grade school in two more years. Although the student population for Estanoa should go up every year, 1t goes down. -U"11 s students qwt fleeing their neighborhood SChools, it won't happen. · · r can't figure out why they leave, since most are flecmg to Newport Harbor High, which 1s already overcrowded. Harbo1 High bas the same kinds of advanced placement classes as Estancia, but guess where you might have 19 students in class with you, as opposed to having 50? Harbor High has academies. But m the Da Vmci Academy, 160 entering freshman applied and 60 were accepted. Where do you have the best chance of playing a varsity sport? Which one has the best average of SAT scores? Which one has the cleanest campus in the best repair? Which school has plenty of playmg fields and a park next door? Which has a dynanute dra- ma department? The answer for all: Estancia High. The district's answer to low enrollment at Estancia High is to establish a "teaching academy," which will allow students to get a teaching credential by complet- ing two years in the "academy," two years at OCC,' and two years at a four-year college. , It's a great idea, but I'm not sure how many eighth-graders about to go mto high school want to be teachers No one swveyed the students. My two daughters could only think of one friend that had expressed an interest in ln my opinion, the question isn't whether the schools need fixing, it's whether the voting . public has enough fe.ith in our school board and admirustration to vote to give them the money, knowing the money will be used to fix all the schools. Baseball was his choice. A former American League All-Star pitcher for the Oakland A's, Keough was one of the best athletes -maybe the best -to come out of Corona del Mar High. Keough will be remembered as one of the guys who pitched in Manager Billy Martin's famed starting rotation in 1980, when Keough, Mike Norris, Steve McCatty, Rick Langford and Brian Kingman put Oakland relievers out of business. On june 15, 1983, the A's traded Keough to the Yankees for two players and cash. but it · would only be the start of a vioous cycle as Keough was bounced around from the Yankees to the Cardinals, Cubs and Astros. while trying to stay healthy. Keough, Oakland's only representative in the 1978 All-Star game, was drafted by the A's in 1973 as a shortstop, following a stellar career at CdM. A foul ball rocketed off his head in 1992 . and Keough, who was attempting another comeback, never pitched again. Whitey Henog, then the Angels' front office executive, hired Keough as his speoal assistant that year and the right-bander was on his way to a second career. And Keough will also be remembered for tying a 73-year-old major league record in 1979, when he lost his first 14 sUu1S of the year for the talent-stripped A's, finishing 2-17.
