COSTA MESA -The City Council on
Monday considered the fate of trees blocking
homeowneIS' views in Canyon Park, and ol
trees on Bear Street which will be replaced by
Cuban Royal Palms.
Preedom Homes residents were encour-
aged and pleased with the council's action to
address their concerns about lofty eucalyptus
trees blocking their Views of the ocean and
Canyon Park and creating safety hazards.
Councilwoman Ubby Cowan proposed a
cerns about safety.
Under her proposal, staff would develop
within 60 ddys a plan to replace eucalyptus trees
with Cahfomia oaks, sycamores and other
native species over a period of three to 15 years.
A maintenance plan that would address
other concerns, such as fear of fire hazards
and vagrants living iinder the mask of trees,
would also be developed.
MI think it's a good start,• said resident Mark
Mcll.roy. "I feel the City Counol listened to us.•
Although the council's 5-0 decision
appeared promising, Mcllroy said he is worried
that a three-to 15-year time frame would not
immediately address homeowners' concerns.

Resident Kathy Stewart Sdld she l.Sil't sure

and have dense canopies, are the nght choice.

ward to working with the oly lo regain and
preserve therr views and ensure the canyon
remains a safe place.
In other tree-related matters, the council
approved a plan by C.J Segerstrom & Sons to
remove and rep1ace a Vdflety of trees on Bear
Street wtth Cuban Royal Palms -with some
modifications.
The Parks Comnuss1on had approved the
proposal on the condition that Segerstrom
replace a dozeo mature median treeS,• at a 3-
to-1 ratio, Wlth 24-inch and 36-mch box trees,
· which is estimated to cost $9, 100.

Albertson's
I live on Ins Avenue and I
want to comment on the
Albertson's 11sues here in the
neighborhood (Mailbag, •All's
not right at Albertson's,,. May

Keith Dean's letter that they
submitted to you, and I concur
100% with the two ma1or
issues with Albertson's -that
they' first req1,.lire their employ-
ees to park on the street and
not on the lot, like all of the
other businesses are required
to, and it has caused a huge
parking fiasco in the neighbor-
hood.
I find it ironic that they have
built to the greatest extent of
the lot that they own, or are
leasing, and therefore are fore·
mg their customers and
employees to use the shared lot
or park off the street.
The second issue, which is
of a larger importance to me, is
their delivery trucks -these
large 18-wheelers that block
traffic. They do not obey the
traffic signs around here. The
street is very wd-po_st8d: no
trucks over 3 tom.

A fond farewell to Bal Week
L est week I talked about
Bal Week, its ongm during
the early '20s, its growth
during the '30s and '40s, and
how not a voice was rdlSed
against it because it brought
into this town the necessary
financial shot in the arm to last
merchants until Memorial Day.
The kids were happy, the local
businessmen were happy.
Then after WWII, things
began to change. In the fU'St
·place, the town was changing
UQm a swruner resort to a full-
brne residential conumrn:ity.
Things were getting a bttle
crowded. There were no more
vacant beach cottages for the
kids to rent. The Little Yellow
Cottages were no more. The
kids still came, but they had to
find accommodations in other
parts of town where their
neighbors were no.t nearly as
tolerant as those of the old Bal-
boa days.
Then we slid into.the Rebel-
lious '60s, a social upheaval
never afforded its importance
by histo~ans. The Roaring
1Wenties were tame by compar-
ison.
So not only were things get-
ting more crowded, attitudes
changed. The kids were more
aggressive. The cops were now
"pigs.•
l Uunk the change can be
exemplil1ed by the two burn-
ings of the Rendezvous. When
it burned in 1935, it was unme-
diately rebuilt. When it burned
in 1966, it was never rebuilt. It
is now a condominium.
·THE VllDICI
robert
gardner
Frankly, the town was fed up
with Bal Week. It had become a
pain in the neck.
And so the city adopted a
hard-nosed, anti-kid attitude. It
hired a retired captain of the
Los Angeles Police Department
and a tough cop. His instruc-
tions were to stop Bal Week. He
did.
The youngsters were arrest-
ed by the hundreds. The Juve-
nile Court law at that time had
·a catch-all section by which tbe
police could pick up any juve-
nile who "for any reason is in
danger of leading an idle, dis-
solute, or immoral life.• It
would be hard for a saint to
beat that rap. In 1966, the
pol.lee arrested 347 juveniles
during the first three days of
Bal Week.
The kids got the message.
Almost overnight, they quit
coming to Balboa, much to the
relief of the local townspeople.
Bal Week was as dead as a
dinosaur.
The kids then went to Palm
Springs, which put up with ·
them for a few years, then, dis-
. enchanted, the city gave them
the old heave-ho. Apparently,
Easter Vacation (the term Bal
Week no longer seemed to fit)
was having problems finding a
welcome site. Then came the
Colorado River.
For a while, the kids
descebded on the Colorado Riv-
er, specifically the A.ri;ona side
between Parker Darn and the
town of Parker. This was part of
an Indian reservation. The kids
could raise all the hell they
wanted and only bother a few
rattlesnakes and roadrunners
Housing was no problem. There
wasn't any, so they lived in their
sleeping bags. It was dusty and
dirty, and the smell of marijua-
na made the plm:e smell like
the Haight-Ashbury district in •
San Francisco.
Then one of the kids made a
slight mistake. He slugged an
Indian policeman. Those tough
Indian policemen started at.the
dam and chased each and
every kid down the river to the
town of Parker, then over the
bridge and out into the Califor-
nia desert. Where they went
after that I do not know.
So that was Bal Week. It ran
its course from being a shot in
the arm to being a pain in the
neck. Still, it's an integral, if
noisy, part of this town's history.

Duarte hasn't exactly made a

Montview record posted by
Coach Mike Sims' squad, in fact,
produced the school's first lPague

Likewise, Mesanas not exactly

dynamics. The Mustangs' last
postseason victory was a 7-5 wild·
card triumph over visiting San
Clemente in 1981. Asked about
the school's last CIF tirst-round
conquest. Bauermeister, a Mesa
graduate in his second term as
coach and the program's unolli-
dAl historian, pointed to the 3·A

But this, of course, has been no

the 62 Mustangs who began

¥We're hoping to get him to

driving in 92 runs and amassing

Harper has raised bis already

Senior Ruben Mancilla, whom
Bauermeister said couJd be cho-

league draft, leads a potent lineup
which b.as posted a .369 team bat·
ting average, a .511 on-base per·
centage and a slugging percent·
age of .527.
Mancilla has launched. a
school single-season record eight
home runs and his 42 hits, 36 runs
and 78 total bases are also school
records. He is slugging a mon-
strous .948 and has also fashioned
a 7-0 pitching record with two
saves, a 2.98 ERA and 55 strike-
outs in 47 innings.
Mancilla, however, has not
pitched since April 27, when he
said he heard hls elbow pop while
trying to overthrow a fastball
against Leguna Hills.
Mancilla's right arm,-which .
Bauennelster has rested by using

Howell. in addition to audition-

Perkins is looking forward to
seeing newly hired ·defensive
coordinator Bob Brockie install a
defensive scheme similar to the
one which has become known as

of Arizona.
Brockie, a football coach for
more than two decades, is an old
Perkins ally, having coached with
him at Corona, ·San Bernardino
and A.B. Miller high schools.
Freeman, who has one of the
Sea Kings beefiest teams in years,
said he will stress conditioning.
Unlike bis disbict rivals,. Free-

The Sea Kings' leadoff man

and senior Mark Hatfield (.389

Senior Alex Bottom, who has
appeared in football and basket-
ball playoff games since last fall,
is hitting .396, while junior David
Beser (.350) and senJor Nate Lem-

consistent offensive weapons.
Larson, projected to be picked
in next month's major league

has also induded Harper and
senior Brett Elliston.
Larson's five victories are a
team-high, as are his· 54 strike-·

The Sea Kings enter the post-
season at less than full strength.
Senior shortstop Matt Thiede was
diagnosed with mononudeosis in
early May and is out for the sea-
son.
But Bauermeister said he is
leaning toward starting freshman
right-hander Nick Cabico (2-4
after a complete-game victory in
the PCL finale Wednesday).
"Even if Ruben is 100% he
hasn't pitched in nearly a month

The new developments for the

Playoff dramatics are nothing
new to Orange Coast. In fact, all
you have to do is go back to the
last time the Bucs crashed the
playoff party in 1993. Despite
being a sophomore-heavy ball
club, the Pirates were in
transition with a new baseball
coach and a new system.
"It took a little getting used

Obviously stricken with a
selective memory that most
coaches have, Altobelli's Bucs
didn't necessarily •come

by conference-champ Santa Ana

remembered San Bernardino
ragging on his ball club in game
two as the Pirates fell behind, 7-3
heading to the ninth inning.
~They ticked us off,• Altobelli
remembered. "It was them that
fired us up. They should have
stayed quiet."
Down to their last three outs
of the season, the Pirates
mounted an incredible
comeback, scoring five runs to
stay alive, winrung. 8-7.
OCC shut San Bernardino up
quickly and powerfully with an
18-8 drubbing, advancing the
Pirates to Section B of the
Regionals.
Not good at carrying
momentum, the Pirates lost to
San Diego Mesa, 10-7, in the
opening game. "Hopefully we
can make it a long day

do it at their place. If they did,
they got San Diego Mesa, again.
Well go figure. OCC jumped
out to a big lead early and held
on for dear We as the Pirates
shocked L.A. Harbor, 10-7.
The rematch againSt San
Diego Mesa was the stuff from
which legends are made from.
"l still re.member it well,•
Altobelli said with a smile. "We
kept coming back and they kept
going tlhead." .
OCC. down 7-2 in the eighth,

All of a sudden, a single, triple
and sacrifice fiy later, the Pirates
lived to fight again with a
dramatic 9-8 win.
Next up was Long Beach,
undefeated in the tournament.
OCC had to sweep its .
third·straight doubleheader to
advance to the State Final Four.
Game one saw the Pirates
blow a 3-0 lead, giving up four
runs in the seventh inning and
one in the eighth. Now trailing
5-3 and down to their final three
outs, again. could the Bucs do it
again?
"We were really pushing our

The final game against Long

The Pirates didn't need
hair-graying magic or crossed •
fingers and won rather easily,
7-0, to advance to the State
Final Four for the first time in six
years.
Is the voodoo still alive and
kicking at OCC? Only time will
tell. Altobelli sees some

Altobelli said. "This team and
