streets of downtown Los

with scam artists, better known
as griJters. As a youngster I was
privileged to see some of them
in action.
Most of them had small,
portable tabies from which they
hawked such items as "14 -carat,
solid gold" rings that would tum
green before you could get
home. They always kept wary
eyes for the cops. They were
obviously unlicensed.
Wh~n the cops arrived, they
would fold their little tables and
run like hell down the nearest
side street. As soon as the cop
passed they wovJd return to
their stations to sell their wares
to the next sucker.
There was another type of
gritter. In those days there were
many vacant lots in downtown
Los Angeles. In some of these
there would be garishly painted
cars on the front fenders of
which hucksters sold some kind
of liquid that would increase
your gasoline mileage immea-
surably.
As soon as the salesman had
accumulated an audience, he
would pour a few drops of his
magic elixir into the gas tank
and the engine, which had been
idling, would roar into high
speed. lt was marvelous. It tooJ<

Crooke speculates that squid
spawn at age 1 and die soon
after or are caught.
But Tapp guesses the squid he
catches could be 3 years old . He
figures they stay in the deep
waters the first two years of their
lives.

some way the grilter hit the
accelerator, but I never saw how
he did it.
My favorites were the mecli-
cine men. They sold nostrums
that would cure anything from
dandruff to cancer. They had
marvelous spiels as they sold
their cure-alls. My favorite was
the man who sold a product that
had been endorsed by no one
less than God,.
This character sold something
that would ensure the laker of
four bowel movements a day.
When a few eyebrows were
raised at this concept, he would
thunder that the Lord recom-
mended it, and would cite by
chapter and verSt! a place in ·the
Bible for his authority. It's hard
to turn down a product that has
the Lord's endorsement. My
only regret is that I didr)'t jot
down that13ible quotation.
I now fast forward from
downtown Los Angeles in the
'20s to current times in Orange
County.
Orange County is becoming
rather well known as the white
collar fraud capital of the world .
l can see why.
Recently I handled a case in
which some 200 people invesled
and lost $11 million in a pie-in-
the-sky operation. These
investors were n't poor, ignorant
widows and orppans. They were
investing in hundred-thousand-
doUar chunks. And why were
they so willing to part with their
money?
Well, the promoter had a lav-
ish suite of offices in a high-rise
Newport Beach building. The
problem gettmg them," said
Roberto BeUarosa, head chef at
The Cannery Restaurant.
BeUarosa turns the giant mol-
lusks into $14 calamari steaks
dressed with lemon. caper and
butler sauce.
However, Jose Arroyo, a chef
at 21 Oceanfront, prefers flour,
egg wash and crackers on his
calamari steak. The smaller
squid he sautes in olive oil and
garlic butter, then adds toma-
toes, onions, oregano, sauce and
pasta, Parmesan and crushed
chiles to create a $17 calamari
palmarino.

The study didn't directly tackle
the issue of fish caught in the

Newport could be high enough to
affect local fish.

Thqugh Corona del Mar High's
Ryan Acht&berg and Mark Hat-
field both belted fifth-inning
grand slams, the most notable
swing in Tuesday's Pride of the
Coast Tournament game proved
to be that of Costa Mesa's No. 9
hitter, Robbie Gloster.
Gloster's third-inning infield
chopper, ruled too tough a play
for a hard-charging second base-
man to short-hop behind the
mound and nail the Mesa short-
stop at first, turned out to be the
lone hit surrendered by CdM
junior left-hander Ryan Lewis in
an 11-0 Sea King round-robin
baseball triumph.
Cd.M's official scorer ruled the
play a hit, as did the Daily Pilot
and Mesa Coach Doug Deats.
"I left it blank (on the score-
card), 11 said C dM Coach Joe
Koh, who watched his team rush
the mound following the last out
to congratulate Lewis on what
they believed was a no-hitter. "I
wanted to wait to see how the
rest of the game worked out.•
CdM players, including sec-
ond baseman Matt Poster, who
argued he should have been giv-
en aq error, expressed postgame
disappointment with the scoring
decision.
But;the subjective cons~nsus
should take nothing away from
Lewis' masterful complete-game
shutout, which earned him his
first win in three decisions.
"That wasn't a surprise,• Koh
said of the five-strikeout, four-
walk gem. "Ryan has pitched
well for us all year, he just hasn't
gotten any run support. •He had

up) and he didn't'run out of gas.•

Though the lopsided score

also impressive the first four

But CdM broke out in the
fifth, twice loading the bases for
Actherberg, a junior left fielder,

"That just shows you how

pleased with the way we played.

It was not easy for the Tudales
to send their daughter to Camaril-
lo, but it was even scarier when
she moved to a private group
home.
Shortly after the move, Melis-
sa's behavioral problems wors-
ened. They went unchecked until
group home operators admitted.
her to a local hospital and placed
her on suicide watch. The doctor
refused to discuss Melissa's condi-
tion with the Tudales, speaking
only to the foster care provider.
. •Melissa doesn't understand
the concept of suicide,• Tudale
said.
Also, because Melissa is prone
to kidney disease, medications
prescribed by the doctors, .such as
lithium, endangered her life, . Tu-
dale said. She also was given
prozac and risperdal, anti-psychot-
ic drugs typically given to people
who suffer from schizophrenia,
Tudale said.
When Melissa' visited her par-
ents in June, she was not herself.
She was lethargic, with a 103-
degree temperature. Her parents
rushed her to Children's Hospital
of Orange County, where she was
dia_gnosed with an advanced Uri-
accommodate more air traffic
than John Wayne.
"It just won't work (to lift the
cap)," Debay said. "People would
be so impacted by it. They're ask-
ing for a situation that people
can't live in."

Achterberg, the lone returner
to have contributed to last year's
school-record 29 home runs with
three, yanked a first-pitch fast-
ball over the left-field fence for
bis third round-tripper-of the
spring and the Sea Kings' first
"salami" of the season.
A walk, a dropped fly ball and
an /!.van Schiff single set the
table for Hatfield, who muscled
up on another first-pitch fastball,
which carried over the center-
field barrier.
"I was a little bit surprised
both those ~ got out, because
(Mesa) had hit a couple shots to
left that the wind seemed to
kill," Koh said. "I thought Hat-
field's was a routine fly ball, but
it just kept going.•
The twin slams put the game
out of reach. but Ty Harper
added an RBI single and another
run scored on a throwing error to
provide the final margin.
Actherberg finished 3 for 3
with a stolen base, before being
pinch hit for in the sixth, denying
him a shot at a triple for the
cycle.
Mesa's Ben Felter, who made
back-to-back diving catches in
left-and right-center field to end
CdM's prolific fifth, and third
baseman Al Lambert, who
leaped to snag a line drive, then
doubled off a runner at second,
provided de fensive highlights
for the vi.sitors.
CdM (3-6-1) continues round-
robin play today, hosting
Estancia at 11 a.m., while Mesa
(6-4) hosts Bolsa G rande, also at
11.

Tudale said the workers at pri-
vate group home' were supposed
to monitor her every two weeks for
infections, but records· showed she
hadn't been checked for four
months.
"If she had not been taken off
the medication, it would have
killed her," said TlSdale, whose
daughter was born with only one
fu.Dctioning kidney.
When the Tisdales asked to

being paranoid and told they were
setting Melissa up for failure.
By the tirrte Melissa arrived ~t

December, she had been moved
four times in one year.
Today, Melissa's school princi-
