We do offer them a quiet room in the
administration a rea of the library, but
most prefer to interact with the press,
our sponsors and special guests prior to
their presentation. They also seem to
really enjoy the dinner reception afte r·
ward.
Did you get any good souvenirs from
the lecturers?
To be hon!!st, I've been too busy at
these events to even think about that,
but t have lots of interesting memories
about them. ~. ,...

that this year's series is over7 ·
Yes, but only for a moment. We are
already in the prpcess of planning our
Distinguished Panel DiscUssion Series
in the fall of 1999, and ow Distin·
guished Speakers Lecture Series in the
spring of 2000. Believe it or not, a lot of
thit. needs to be accomplished in the
next few weeks.

Starting in September 1999, we will
be presenting three distinguished pBn· ·
els from Southern California, who will
be discusslng key issues such u edU·
cation, crime and law, and U.. eftects of
economic and population growth. We
also are beginning the global search for

60tb wedding anniversary Thurs·
day.

When the couple met al a
parade in San Gabrlil in 1938, 78·
yeer-old Vlrgipia laid, at fi,rst she
didn't thiilk Leioy wu that great.
But after seeing him again she real-
ized he was the man of her dreams.
•1 realized be was the one I was
looking for,• Virginia 1a1d.
And their fint encounter was
definitely different for Leroy. •
·1 went home and told my moth·
er, 'Mom I met the girl I am going to
marry,"' Leroy said. •1 fell in love
with her that first night."
The couple have spent the last
60 ~running a concrete com-
pany and building a family.
•Raising the kids and the gra,nd
kids have been the best time in our
lives,• Leroy· said. •Tuey make
your life worthwhile.•
To celebrate their milestone the
couple plan to travel to San Diego
The reception was at the Newport

by 185 guests.

people in the four school
zones that make up the dis-
trict don't llgree on much. I've '
found two things that we all
l!Qree on:
1. The Daily Ptlot prints bad
things about the schools in our ,
zone, and good thingt> about the
schOQls in the other zones
2. The concept of d1viding our
school district into fow zones,
and solving problems within the ,
confines of the zofu?s. is not ·. ,..-"'
working.

as an issue by parents rrom so
many dlfferent schools all in the
same week. The second pomt
was found to be lru by an out-
side group a few years back, and
I believe the problems have only
worsened.

Bernd came on the scene dS our

to gel the pulse of the communi-
ty and see where the school dis-
trict was He held community
forums so the community could

started with the Demographics
Committee, which consisted o.f a
group of teachers, parents and
district staff. It was suggested by
parents in the comnultee in the
spring of 1997 that we decide on
our values, then make facilities
changes to conform to those val-
ues.
So, if neighborhood schools
are a No. 1 value, we des1gnate ,
boundaries to make allelemen-·
ta.ry schools kindergarten
through si.Xth grade. We then
draw the boundaries to.include
kids from the neighborhood. If
we value large kindergarten cen-

"And that's hard to do when

Estancia's Alberto Munoz did
