Councilman suggests checkout OCC library By Michelle Terwilleger, Dally Pilot COSTA MESA -As citizens and city leaders consider build- ing a separate Costa Mesa Library or merging library sys- tems with other cities like New· port Beach , Councilman Joe Erickson bas offered a new possi- bility: expand the Orange Coast College library to serve as the city's ten tr al library. The idea was one of Erickson's responses to a report by the Library Services Committee that bas been exploring improve- ments and alternatives to the Orange County Library System, suffering from dwindling resources. ·occ is in a central location and has plenty of parking," Erickson said. •I think if we were to work with them it would save a lot of money and give . good results." Erickson saw a combined col- lege-community library as an alternative to the committee's suggestion of building a separate central facility. Community members already may use OCC's library and the college is planning to build a new library in the next five years, !ijlid college spokesman Jim Car- nett. Ke n White, a member of the City's library committee and a for- mer library administrator, said he thought Erickson's suggestion was well-intentioned but that, after speaking with a OCC library administrator, he didn't think it would work. "I know and (the OCC admin- istrator) knows that the public library serves the public and a college library does its job when it serves its students with curricu- lum," White said. White said that college offi- cials did say they we re willing to help a library committee founda- tion that would raise· money to build a Costa Mesa library. "That was the turning point, when I broke him for the first time in the third set," said Agassi, who ripped 11 return winners. The Netherlands had come from · behind, 0-2, to defeat Romania and advance, and following Saturday's win in doubles, there was hope the Dutch could pull it off again. DOUBLES ~TUART CONTINUED FROM' 1 ITP officials decided it wasn't worth .making an ugly scene so close to cur- tain time, so they told Stuart to keep his sign where it was, and the Davis Cup banner with the title sponsors name would go on top of it. Finally, the Davis Cup sign was .crafted for the bottom level of the scoreboard, with Stuart's Palisades Tennis Club logo taking center stage, only the blue sky behind it as a back- drop for l!SPN television. Mission accomplished. "We had a staff meeting (SUJ\day) pioming at the Hyatt Newporter, and .they said 70 million people saw it on television (Saturday)," Stuart said. Stuart, often asked to speak at SCTA meetings on the keys to success in private club tennis ownership, said from day one five ye~. ago thaJ his ultiinate goal for the· Palisades Club was for it to become' "absolutely the best tennis club in the world." Many other Orange County club owners seem to think that's already the case, considering a 24-member cluster of county proprietors recently voted to overwhelmingly endo~e Stuart's idea of an association,. an unprecedented move for normally independent club owners. And now with the Davis.Cup, Stuart has seemingly put his club over the top, aligning it perhaps with the nation's finest. "As I was sitting at the top of the grandstands early (Friday) morning with my son, Josb, I told him he'll always remember this, that it's a once- in-a-lifetirne event," Stuart said.
