Member of 'NEA Four' plays lead role in 'On The Jump' at South Coast Repertory
NoAJO SofW>JU'Z
G ohn Fleck could be
very intimidating.
He is an estab-
lished television, film
and theater actor and was
one 9f the National Endow-
ment of the Arts performers
who had his grant pulled in
1990 when deemed obscene
-certainly a great and seri-
ous artist.
In person, however, Fleck
is as much of a character as
he is on stage, playing six
roles in the South Coast
Repertory's new production,
"On the Jump."
The play is a fast-moving
romantic comedy that
revolves around the amus-
ingly tragic life of Colleen
Ferguson.
"It's dreamlike, like a.n old
movie -magical, n Fleck
said of the play.
The play opens on
Colleen's wedding night,
when she is robbed and then
abandoned by her new hus-
band (Fleck). The culmina-
tion of a series of humiliating
events making up her so-
called life, Colleen contem-
plates ending her troubles by
falling or jumping off a
bridge. Her attempt is cut
short and her life changes
course after.a fleeting
moment on the guard rail of
that bridge.
It's difficult to imagine that
this quick-witted. colorful
character called John Fleck
was once a shy accounting
student in Cleveland, Ohio.
"l flunked trig three
times, n he said, smiling. But
he says he could type a light·
ning-quick 110 words per
minute.
Judging by the way Fleck
sharply moves from idea to
idea when speaking, that is
not surprising.
After a failed attempt at
pleasing his parents and

with a daily math grind,
Fleck followed his then-girl-
rrtend to California. He
attended the American
Academy of Theater Arts,
and at the age of 24 made
the commitment to become
an actor.
"Th.rough acting, I can
ch,annel someone else to
express something,-he said
of his decision to change pro-
fessions.
Eventually, the classes
paid off and Fleck started to
get parts. It wasn't until be
becameoneofthe"NEA
Pour" in 1990, though, that
bis name was sploshed all
over the entertainment
pages,· as well as the front
page of most major newspa·
pers.
The notonety was costly:
he was targeted by the slings
and arrows of misrepresenta-
ti6n in the press, hate mail
and ugly phone calls. Finally,
Fleck and the other three
artists were redeemed when
they sued the government
and won.
Since then, Fleck's name
and face have become famil-
iar through a more conven-
tional Hollywood route,

his personality.,
In his NEAlyouth, Fleck
shocked people by running
around naked in bis shows.
However, he is now uncer-
tain that audiences would be
as receptive to his unclothed ..
40-plus body.
In recent years, he land-

toned-down assistant on
"Murder One." Earlier this
year, however, the show
was canceled due to poor
ratings in Midwest states,
he said.
Bouncing back. Fleck has

vides him the chance to
refine. his characters with
each showing, something
that is not always possible in

What do you think?
I'm working on something I've
always wanted to do, a com-
mencement s~ch. Not a real
one, of course. No one in their
rigbt mind would actually ask
me to speak to a graduating
class. But, with the season of the
mortarboard upon us, what the
hay? Think of it as a virtual com-
mencement address.
Wail Is it "what the hdy?" Or ,
is it "what the hey?"
Anyone know? Anyone care?
I didn't think so. Let's Q10ve on.
"Students, faculty, parents,
. friendS -thank you for having

gratulations to go around his
afternoon, but let's start with all
the parents here. ln fact, I think
our graduates should give them
a big round of applause. (Wait
for applause.) Remember, while
you were studying the Remlis-

ones going Baroque. (Wait for
laugh. There is no laugh. Oh no.
l was sure they'd laugh.) But
seriously, I'm here to tell you
everything I know about life.
This won't taJce long. (Wait for
laugh.Hmm. Please God, take
me now.) OK, well ... let's move
on.
"Don't get stressed about
what you're going to do. You'll
figure it out. If 1 could see the
future and tell each of you what
you'll be doing 20 years from
now, you would laugh and laugh
and say 'no way.· Believe me,
the only way to make God laugh
is to make plans. Speaking of
God, find a faith you like and
follow it. You think you're going
to live forever. You're not. Sorry.

think time moves slowly. It does-

improved to 21-1.
The finish was a stark reversal
of an earlier nonleague duel with
the highly regarded Panthers,
who fell to 21-3 and out of the
championship running.
• Peninsula had earned victory
by games after a 9-9 standoff with
CdM in a nonleague match May
3, a duel filled with controversy.
There was little controversy
Thursday with two USTA officials
in attendance and what twned
out to be a solid superiority by the
Sea Kings in singles, and doubles.
Singles standout Parker
Collins, headed for the University
of Washington in the fall, blitzed
his foes, running his record to
11-1 against Peninsula opponents
over the past two years.
And the doubles tandems of
Brian Morton and Randy Myers,
Curtis Ellmore and Sam Shah-
mardi and Cameron Ball and
Peter Kulmaticki each won two of
three to seal the verdict.
The first clue came at the end
of the second round with Corona
del Mar nursing a 6-5 margin and
Sameer Chopra and Peninsula's
Goh Pukuga.ki still on the court.
Chopra trailed, 2-3, but once he
was in the limelight he surfaced
with a pounding serve and steady
play as his Peninsula foe seemed
to melt under the pressure.
wThat was giant ... big, big,•
said a relieved Mang, whose
team was now in control with a
7-5 lead and a margin of some 10
points in games.
With Collins a gimmee in his
final singles, as-well as the
prospect of Morton and Myers
going against Peninsula's all·
sophomore No. 3 entry in dou-
bles, it seemed just a matter of
time.
But whatever time Coach Tom
Co and hJs Panthers thought
bad, it was short-lived u Bll·
more and Sham.ardi went to work
against Peninsula's No. 1 doubles.
They snapped Peninsula's
serve to take a 3-2 lead and held,
then repeated the process with
another break and bold in a run-
away 6-2 decision.
Bllmore's exploding faceshot in
the fa ding moments seemed to
put the exclamation point on the
Sea Kings' victory as the. combi-
nation worked to perfection with
Ellmore's hammering serves and
Shamardi'1 soft touch twisting
Peninsula apart with an unpre-
dictable attack.

I
' NORWALK -After wmning the CIF

t,600 meters last week, Costa Mesa High
enior Bruce Hancock has been a very
busy guy.
: •He's been getting a lot of press and
}Wnors since last week for track and bis
schooling,,. Mustangs Coach John Car-
ney said. •He's worked really hard her~
and I'm extremely proud of him.,.
Hancock, heading for Princeton Uni-
vel'Sl1y in the fall, is one of eight area ath-
letes competing in the CIF Masters Meet
tonight at 6 at Cerritos College. .
The top five in each event at the Mas-
ters Meet will advance to the CIF State
Finals, June 4-5 in Sacramento.
Hancock's best time in the' 1,600 is
4:15.80, something that Carney believes
wilf have to improve to advance to the
State Finals.
"Whoever wants it the most will move
on,• Camey said. "All the runners com-
peting have run similar times. lt's whoev-
er finds the drive to be in the top five.•
Hancock's fiercest competition will
come from from CIP Division II champ
Josh Spiker from Ventura High (4:12.91)
and Division I champ James DeBruhl
from Chino High (4:13.14). ·
•tast week, Bruce was shooting for a
time,• Carney said. "This week, he's got
to stay in the top five to move on. His
biggest thing is to stay in contact with the
top of the pack.•
Mustang teammate, Jamie DeNoewer
will run in the girls 1,600. A member of
last year's Masters Meet-qualiflng 1,600.
relay team, Carney believes that experi-
ence will be helpful for her.
"Having that time at the Masters last
year, she won't feel the pressure quite as
bad," Camey said
Newport Harbor senior Curt Herberts
qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200, but will
only run in the 3,200 for the Sailors.
"Only running one race will keep him
fresher,• Sailors boys coach Bim Barry
said. "II he stays in contact and has a
strong second half, he should be right there.•
Ventura's Spiker and Villa Park's

"The best of the best will be there,•
Barry said. "In some events, this meet
will ~e even tougher than the State Finals
because the best in t,he state are in this
area."
That statement is best illustrated in the
boys 300 intermediate hurdles. In a
record-setting race at last week's CIF

Finals, Sailor junior :ir~vor Jones, along
with Victor Valley's Simeon Rogers and
Kennedy's Ahmad Wright, compiled

hi the boys 800, Harbor senior Steve
Jensen will have to shave time off his

qualified for the Masters in the girls 800
after her second-place effort at the Divi-

Lauren Fleshman (2:11.05). ·
Morse's No. 3 seed.mg was the highest
of the area girls participating at the Mas-

CORONA DEL MAR -Bucking a
postseason trend for coaches to stress
the business at hand, Corona del Mar
High baseball head man John Emme
made a point recently to focus his play-
ers' attention on the ultimate destina-
tion.
So, while the No. 4-seeded Sea Kings
(17-8) are concentrated on today's CIF
Southern Section Division fV quarterfi-
nal against visiting Chaminade (19-8) at
3:15 p.m., they have allowed themselves
to ponder a trip to Edison Field for next
week's championship game. •
"You've got to be thinking about the
stadium,• Emme said. "On our bus ride
home from San Dimas (a 13-9 second-
round win in eight innings Tuesday), we
were on tbe 57 freeway. When we
passed (Edison Field), I pointed it out
and told them 'That's our goal.' You
have to take it.one game at a time to get
there, but whatever happens, that's
what everybody is shooting for.•
The Sea Kings are enjoying their best
postseason since winning the CIF 2-A
title in 1981. After winning a share of
their first league crown since 1982, and
two playoff games, they'll face the third-
place team from the Mission League.
The Eagles, coached by Scott
Orootin, boast an aggressive, unpre-
clictable style, which includes, accord-
ing to Emme, raucous dugout chatter.
•They'll do anything at any time and
there's no method to their madness,"
Emme said. •And, a little like St. Paul,
they like to make a lot of

-For the 15th consecu-I 0 Y S
tive year, Te wmkle
Juruor High captured the Newport-
Mesa Junior High Boys District title
Thursday at Corona del Mar High.
With a solid team effort Crom top to
bottom, the TI"ojans, unlazed with the
pressure of a huge streak on the line,
completed the journey on top with
311 points. Ensign (213) and Dwyer
(176) round out the top three.
•When you get a ruce group of
great k.Jds with the same drive and
focus, you get great results,• Te Win-
kle boys coach Bill Riddell said. "We
have a very dedicated group of
eighth-grade leaders that have
instilled their knowledge to the
younger guys."
Te Winkle especially dominated m
the 5-4 division. Win.rung five of the
nine events and tinishing 1·2-3 in
three events, the Trojans-tallied 156
points, or one-hall of the team's over-
all total in that one division.
