COSTA MESA - A hail of
gunshots Saturday night cut short
the life of a pregnant 15-year-old
girl, who gave birth to her baby
just after she died, though the
infant, born two months prema-
turely, also did not survive the
attack.

At least three of the bullets
punched through the wooden
door, one of them striking the girl
in the chest, police said.

to Hoag Hospital in Newport
Beach, but she died there at 9:34
p.m., police said.
Doctors delivered Yuridia's
three-pound baby girl by cesare-
an ~ection in the hospital's emer-
gency room shortly after the
teenager died, but the infant girl
lived for only nine hours before
succumbing to the trauma of her
premature birth.

garage, which sits in the heart of
a low-income area marked by
gang graffiti.
Police declined, however, to
speculate on whether gang activ-
ity was mvolvedin the shooting,
they noted that Wltnesses to the
incident did not report any gang
signs or slogans shouted by the
suspect after he opened fire, as is
often typical of gang-related
attacks.
Police said the girl, Yuridia
Balbuena, had been eating din-
ner with her family in a converted
garage-apartment at the 2000
block of Wallace Avenue when an
unknown gunman fired at the
garage door at about 9 p.m.,
"I was watching TV in my
room, and I did not hear any-
thing,• said next-door neighbor
Liliana Albear, whose home is just
feet away from where the shoot-
ing took place and shares a drive-
way' with the apartment where
the Balbuena family lives.

she screamed, and then when the

been named -was pronounced

infant had not been born at the
tune of the shooting.

Holiday u;eekend
rush just routine
for restaurateur
• EDrTOR'.S NOTE: With the onset of summer,
t)oth .Newport ~ach locals and throngs of
tourists hav. made the exodus to the beach We
comrinc~ Britta Pulliam, of Britta's cafe on Main
Street near the Balboa Pier. to take a break from
the busy Memorial Day weekend crowd and talk
about the Ins and outs of running a beachfront
restaurant during the holiday rush.
IS IT HARD WORKING WHEN EVERYONE
ELSE IS OUT IN THE SUN?
I've been in the restaurant business
since I was 15 and I've always worked
weekends. I can tell you what it's like to
work when no one else is, and what it's
like to be off when everybody else is
working. I like it that way .... I like
working when everyone else is out. The
only hard time is at Christmas, and now
we close on Chrisbnas Day, so it's not a
problem anymore.
WHAT MAKES FOR A BAD CUSTOMER?
Probably someone who's impatient
and doesn't know how to say thank you.
... It happens more than I'd like to say.
HOW BUSY HAS THIS WEEKEND BEEN?
Very busy. It's the kickoff for sum-
mer, so everyone comes out. Even the
locals come out more-they don't like
cooking when it's too hot.
WHAT'S BUSINESS LIKE DURING THE
WINTER? ,
I do good all year round. This" is a
local-based business, so weekends in
July and weekends in December are
pretty much the same. There are some
people who come m for the summer
and open up businesses for 2 112
months and then they go. But I try to
catet to the locals. Everything I do is
centered around them.
WHATS YOUR IEST DISH?
That's hard to say, because we've got
breakfast, lunch and dinner. But they're
all like my children, so I can't pick just
one and call it my favorite.

~ kill to up the lead to 12·9, but two Sea
King hitting errors and a stuff block by
Newport jwlior middle Billy Clayton pull<.>d
the Sailors even.
After a timeout arid subsequent Newport
serving error, a Greg Stampley kill and dou-
ble-contact violation on the Tars allowed the
Sea Kings to serve game point lor the lhll'd •
successive game.
But senior outside hitter Alan Limon put
away one of 'ITambhe's 64 assists for a side-
out and a Jameson block, a Jameson kill, a
Clayton kill and an errant CdM sef'enabled
Harbor to put a stranglehold on thE> momen·
tum.
The Tars need ed just 12 minutes to close
out the fowth game, in which CdM man-
aged just seve n sideouts and five kills.
"The third game was definitely the turn·
ing point,• said Alshuler, a two-time All·CIF
Division ill performer who firushed with a
match-high 23 kills in his third straight sec·
lion title match. "After that, we JUSl couldn't
seem to get anything gomg.•
Cd.M Coach Steve Conti, whose squad
avenged a 1997 five-game title-match loss
to Santa Ynez with a five-game ftnal tri·
wnph over the Pirates last spring, then
elected to "play up" in the enrollmenl·
based pl~yoffs this season, was perplexed
as to how things unraveled so qwckly.
"It was a great match, overall, but I WlSh
we would have shown more chdracter in the
fourth game," Conti said. "It's not dJ\ exacl
science. I have no explanation for why we
stopped playing well after the first three
games. We battled the first three games and
showed . the type or perseverance we've
shown all year. Ttus loss is espec1dlly tough.
knowing we had them on the ropes 1n that
third game. But we didn't lose. dS much as
Newport came out and dE>feat<'d us."
Helping Harbor accompll.sh that chore
were senior starters '!Tam.bile (two kills and
a block to go witb hls dss1stsj, Limon (14
kills), Hearlson (12 kills dlld d match-high
six blocks), Jameson, and Eric Perrine (hve
kills and one block).
Clayton chipped in 14 lulls a block and
an ace serve. Junior Kent 1\uner (three kills)
added spark off the bench for the WlJUlers,
as did senior back-row speo.alists John
Vallejo and Jamie Johnson.
Hansen finished with 46 assists. d team·
high five blocks and three kills. .
Stampley had 13 kills, Hunson nine.
Mor9fU1 Jackson eight and Ethon Zotovich
four for CdM, which dlso roldted in Evdn
Burden, Mark Rowe and Chris Shephdrd·
son.
"It can't be any better,• Jameson sc:ud.
"The games were unbehev«blc. They has
us and we had them "
Hearlson had praise for his opponents,
many of whom he and other Sailors have
tedJTled with in the BalbOd Bay club pro·
gram.
"I bave all the respect m the world for
Corona del Mar/ Hearlson said. "They
played their hearts out. I'm JUSt glad to be
taking home (the championship plaque)
