Stories by Christopher Goffard

N ine years ago, Cheryl Rylance learned a
frightening fact about the man she
planned to marry: He had a cancerous,
goll ball-sized tumor growing on the frontal
lobe of his brain.
Surgeons scooped out 60% of Bill Sansa.m's
tumor and blasted the rest with radiation, with
the warning it co.uld return at any time.
Bill tried to make it easy for her. He told her
he would understand if she fled. Instead, she
married him and bore him two children. Her
rationale: "I could marry someone else and be
could be hit by a car tomorrow. The tumor
could go into remission and be could live forev-

Yet ev~n as they raised their family in New-

the ranks ot management at an hvine pharma-
ceutical company, their happiness hinged on a
high-stakes gamble.
They lost.
Seven surgeries later, beset by a tumor that
keeps returning in steadily fiercer form, Bill
Sansam is 39 years old and dying. Doctors say

Bay~ide Village
land purchase pl~
faces opposition
• Some residents of the-
mobile home park are
skeptic~ of lease holder
· DeAnza's proposal to buy
the land from them.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Fflot
NEWPORT BEACH-A group
of residents at Bayside Village is
criticizing the mobile home park's
lease-holding companys pJ.8.nS to
buy the land beneath the ho111es.
The 26-ac:re park, which pre-
dominantly houses seniors, bas
.J been the subject of four years of
legal battles. DeAnza Assets, Inc.,
owns the lease until 2013, and a
group of residents called the Bay-
side Land Co. owns the land. The
land company, which residents
formed in 1992 to purchase the
park land from The Irvine' Co.,
recently filed for bankruptcy.
DeAnza officials and soipe' resi-
dents say a plan that is n<>W before
bankruptcy court along with a
. long-term lease agreement will
bring an end to the legal woes.
But a group of residents is still
worried the ,agreements will do
nothing but prevent homeowners
from fighting future rent increases
in cpurt
The plan would allow DeAnza
to buy the land, which includes
270 mobile bome spaces and 220
boat slips. DeAnza also promised
to refund land company share-
holders' investments.
Homeowners have haggled
with DeAnZa for the past few
years over rent hikes they feared
would drive them from their
homes. An Orange County Supe-
rior Court jury ruled the 4 7 % bike
unfair in 1995 and ordered DeAn-
za to roll the rates back.
DeAnza appealed, that deci-
sion, but has promised to drop the
appeal if the settlement plans are
approved. The company also
agreed to roll the rates back to
those imposed in the decision.
Jeanne Stirling, a resident and
former land company board men-
ber, is leading the charge agaimt
the DeAnza deal. She said she'd
rather see the park bought by a
company such as Carlsberg Man-
agement Co., which made an offer
on it in December.
"lbe thing we need t.o do is
shine some'tigbt of day on it,• she
said. "A group· Ol grassroots peo-
ple are very upsef: and con-
ed " . cem .
DeAnza president Michael
Gelfand said be expects the plan
to gamer approval from federal
bankruptcy court May 15.
"I really don't think [those who
object] understand what we've
presented to them," he said.
"We've already had a mJm~er of
the tenants vote, and a v~a
matic majority is in support of the
plan."
Homeowners Association Presi-
dent David Brownell said 92% of
land company shareholders who
voted in a recent poll approved the
plan. He said the opposition is sim-
ply a matter of differing opinions.
"Many of them did not under-
stand the leases," he said. "We
believe that far and away most of
the folks in the park will be happy
to settle this and have peace again
here.•
But Stirling and two other resi-
dents offidally filtld _objections to
the bankruptcy plan, saying the
plan is infeasible and DeAma has
acted "in bad faith.'" She said
DeAnza's offer to refund land
company investors' money is an
attempt to "buy• residents into
going along with a complex and
contradictory plan.
"Their intention all along has
been to get rid of the people,• she
said.

Near-drowning victim
saved at local beach
A 12-year-old Santa Ana girl
was rescued from drowning Sun-
day afternoon at the Corona del
Mar main beach after leg cramps
threatened to pull her down,
authorities said ..
Around 4:30 p .m. the girl was
swimming fully clothed just past
the sud line with her sister and a
frlend when the cramps struck,
said Newport Beach Fire and
Marine Department spokesman
Lt. John Blauer.
Lifeguards rescued the girl
from the water and gave her oxy-
gen until paramedics arrived and
rushed her to Hoag Hospital,
Blauer said. He said she was
released about two hours later.
The rescue was one of 32 over
a weekend that drew more than
100,000 people to the. sands of
Newport Beach, Blauer said.

pellet shootiiigs
Three Newport Beach juve-
niles were taken into custody last
week after allegedly crouching in
the bushes near the Back Bay and
shooting pellets at passing bicy-
clists, authorities said.
Around 3:30 p.m. Wolfgang
Gauss, 31, of Herrenberg, Ger-
many, was bicycling on Back Bay
Road north of San Joaquin Hills
Road when a pellet struck him in
the back, said Newport Beach
police Sgt. John De~ond. Gauss
claimed he saw two people
crouching in the bushes with pel-
let guns.
About 15 minutes later, anoth-
er bicyclist, Bryan Green, 42, of
San Jose,· saw a pellet strike the
ground near him and heard three
or four more shots fired, but was
not hit, Desmond said.
And just after 4 p.m., a third
bicyclist, David Stouffer, 50, of
Irvine, was hit with a pellet in the
lower right leg, Desmond said.
None of the injuries required a
hospital visit, Desmond said.
Responding to the scene,
police spotted three juveniles in a
white Chevrolet pickup truck
near the housing track above
Back Bay Road, and recovered
one Daisy air rifle and two Cross-
man pellet guns. .
The boys -one 1? years old
and two 16 years old, all of New-
port Beach -admitted they had
been shooting in the Back Bay
area, Desmond said. -il' ::u
The juveniles were taken into

will be referred to the probcltion

COSTA MESA -The escalat-
ing battle between a pair of local
water districts vying to take over
the Santa Ana Heights Water dis-
trict has resulted in What may be
an unprecedented price war.
While Mesa Consolidated
Water District and Irvine Ranch
Water District have offered to pay
more than $1,000 per share to buy
out ~e small water company, a
ranking county official said most
mutual water companies sell to
public agencies for as little as $1.
"People who own shares gen-
erally think they are worth some-
tbi,ng, • said Dana Smith, execu-
tive officer for the Local Agency
Formation Committee, which will
have the final say on \\rho will buy
the water company.
"I have never seen two public
agencies competing to take over a
mutual company," she said, '"If
you look at the-true .value of (San-
ta Ana Heig)').,t.;~) ass~ts ... there's a
lot of WOJ;:K to be done."
Mesa <::onsolidated and Irvine
Ranch are locked in a stiff compe-
tition to take over the Santa Ana .

ment that has weight and is
important," Smith said.
Irvine Ranch spokesman Dave
Ferguson said the district is about
200 shares away from reaching
50%, but the district once again
extended its deadline -this time
from April 14 to May 30.
The Costa Mesa-based water
district could fight the deal
between Irvine Ranch and the
smaller water company by claim-
adventure
ing territorial rights due in part to
its longtime service to Santa Ana
Heights customers and its infra-
structure, which includes a reser-
voir recently built in the area.
Smith said Mesa's ongoing ser-
vice to the area will also weigh
heavily in its favor, a point that
the Costa Mesa Chamber of Com-
m erce makes in a letter it is send-
ing to the commission this week.
Ed Fawcett, the chamber's
executive director, said members
believe Santa Ana Heights share-
holders would be best served
locally, rather than by board
members elected in Irvine
Ranch's domain.
The city of Costa ~esa has
already submitted applications to
annex two of the five parcels
within the unincorporated Santa
Ana Heights area. City officials
say the other three areas will be
pursued next year.
Ultimately, Smith said the dis-
trict that offers customers the
safest drinking water and reliable
serVice at affordable prices will
prevail.
"I don't want to see two public
agencies fighting over the -s'ame
territory," Smith said.

they keep their bands off East

the readers of this column -few

ask? Well, East Newport is that
part of the Balboa Peninsula from

the bay. It includes Coronado
and Alvarado streets and Mon-

avenues. Alvarado is more of an

there are a few modem houses to
louse up the sce,ne, but the area
is basically what it was when I
first laid eyes on it.
The double front rooms are
what give East Newport its dis-
tinctive type of architecture.
Surprised by hip and happening London
During the 1920s and '30s,
there lived in East Newport the
people who 'made Newport
Beach what it is today. They
were the ·community leaders who
dragged this town through tlle
Great Depression. They were the
driving force th(}t changed Bal-'
boa Bay and its mud flats mto the
present Newport Harbor, one of
the choice yacht harbors in the
world. They were the people ·
who had the vision and foresight
to chanye a sleepy fishing village
and a hortkytonk sununer resort
into the town in which we live
today. Their names are a roll of
honor -Grundy, Welch, Robins,
Finster, Ellsworth, Burlingame,
Garlield, Jordan, Rogers, Wal-
lace, Huddleston, Thompson,
Whitson, Webster, Soiland,
Crosier, Plummer, Wilson, Sher-
man, Claire.
Aside frox;n th.e local people
who lived in East Newport, the
area was inhabited with summer
visitors from what is now called
the Inland Empire -San
Bernardino, Riverside, Redlands
and Ontario. Those people built
houses in East Newport just like
the ones they had built while liv-
ing inland. Thus, each house had
an open front porch on which,
while living inland, they would
sit and enjoy the warm summer
evenings. Unhappily, in East
Newport they discovered that
here at the beach the evenings
are seldom warm. To the con-
trary, our evenin~s are usually
downnght chilly. So, they simply
enclosed their open front porch-
es. The result is that many.of
those old houses in East Newport
have two front rooms back to
back. You don't see that kind of
architecture every day.

L ondon is a fabulous city -
neither one-of -us expected
to find it su ch a hip and
happening place, but it really
won us over. Of course, it might
be due to the fact that we hadn't
been in a true Hwestem" city for
so long and were starved for one
-especially after having spent
so long in Johannesburg, the
pedestrian-unfriendly city. lt
was such a relief to be able to
just walk out of our hotel door
and hit the streets~and walk and
walk and explore all we liked.
Of course, we could have done
without the cold weather, but
that was also a refreshing
_ change -we've.been in sum-
mer for about eight straight
months.
We stayed in a hotel in
Chelsea, one of the chi-chi
neighborhoods, on a block that
reminded us of the South End in
Boston. Hotels in London are
unbelievably expensive, so
we're prese ntly going into some
serious debt, which we decided
is better than the alternative -
some grungy youth hostel in a
not-so-nice part of town. The
price of a night in a London
youth hostel would buy a suite

The theater life, of course, is
amazing. We went to see

Leicester Square -what luxu-

movie in one of those shoe box-

more popular shows is difficult
(the big one here now is •Art"

going to try to get into some on
our way back through.

lots of vegetarian fare, as well as
cheap and tasty take-outs. We
went to an Italian place around
the comer from our hotel where
the owner called me an H angeli-

went to a wine bar, a pseudo-
Chinese place, a great vegetari-

the Crank's in Covent Garden)
and another tasty Italian place
that was packed with locals.
London has apparently cast off
its reputation as a place of bland
food and now boasts some of the
most innovative chefs and
cuisines in the world. We'll be
trying to sample more of them!
A great thing that is on offer
for tourists and/or locals are
guided city walks of all descrip-
tions, at all different times of the
day and night. We went on two
organized by the Original Lon-
don Walks-"Women's London"
and "The Old J ewish Quarter of
London.# Both were very inter-
esting and showed us parts of
London that we never would
have discovered on our own.
Visiting the BeviS Marks Syna-
gogue, the oldest shul in Eng-
land, was a highlight of our trip
through the old Jewish quarter.
ln addition to the walking
tours we took one of the obliga-
tory double-decker bus tours
that conveniently takes in all of
the major attractions such as Big
Ben and the Tower of London.
Aside from that, we walked a lot
and took the Tube to areas like
Covent Gardens, Piccadilly Cir-
cus, Leicester Square and the
City. There is a lot to see and
neither one of us saw much
when we first came here eight
(Arie) and 12 (me) years ago. On
our return trip we'd like to also
go farther afield up to Bath and
the Lake District.
Saturday morning we went to
Shabbat services at the Western
Marble Arch Synagogue where

Starting something. ..
T he most amazing thing
about the 1997 'Itack and
Field City Championship
wasn't some record-breaking
time or some eyelash victory.
It was the family.
The City of Newport Beach
Community Services and the
Newport-Balboa Rotary Club
gave not only girls and boys
opportunities to strut their
athletic abilities, but the groups
gave moms and dads a chance
to express their devotion to those
children.
This being the unveiling of a
column devoted to females in _
sports. I'm going to focus on
daughters and mothers here, but
that does not mean that the
interest fathers showed went
unnoticed, nor does it imply the
effort displayed by the males
went unheeded.
After the 1996 Olympics in
Atlanta, which was dubbed the
·women's Olympics• because of
the success of American women,
much has been made about the
prominence and number of
women in sports.
The 1Tack and Field City
Championship was no different.
More than half of the
participants were girls.
Eleven-year-old Carolyn Doria
recorded a time in the 100 meter
dash that was just two-tenths of
.a second behind the winhing
time in the boys's race.

Dukus, who took over f6r
Shannon Jakosky two bef or~ the
1995-96 campaign, compiled a
34-23 record in two seasons.
That mark, however, was
'somewhat misleading, due to a
murderous schedule. All but one

in tbe Orange County Top 10.

Dukus, in his ninth year of
teaching science at Santa Ana,
said teaching at Newport was not
a solution, because it would have
meant a significant pay cut.

as the Sea Kings' boys coach.
Etchison, who stepped down
because of work commitments,
compiled a 14-29-3 record.in his
two seasons at the helm, includ-

l polo tourney -an set
• Newport International Water Polo roumament at
Corona del Mar High will include '96 silver medalist .
Croatia; high-powered tourney will run from May 6-11.:
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
When the United St.ates water
polo team hoisted themselves out
of the pool in Atlanta's 1996
Olympics, it wasn't just the water
that was dripping off of ~em tl!a.t
wa.s falling. Their heads hung
down. Some shed tears. Hopes
were crushed. Defeat.
With its worst finish since 1968
-a seventh place posting -the
only thmg that was not falling,
hanging or crashing was the
direction of the program.
At that instance, changes
began to be made.
From a change of mind to a
change of coaches to a change of
roster, the USA water polo pro-
gram is on the up, and it's time to
see some of the progress.
After the Atlanta fiasco, the
program named a new head
coach, Newport Beach's John
Vargas.
The coach of the Corona del
Mar High boys and girls teams,
Vargas will have some higher
stakes in the Marian Bergeson
Aquatic Center at the high school
next month when Team USA
hosts five other teams from
around the world at Bergeson,
including 1996 silver medalist
Croatia, in 1he N~wport Interna-
tional Water Polo Tournament.
Formerly called the U.S. Open,
the event will be hosted May 6-11
and the field also includes Aus·
tralia, Canada, Greece and
Yugoslavia.
With Vargas at the helm, the
squad also consists of Corona del
Mar rlative Chris Oed.ing a.rtd res-
ident Chris Duplanty. both who

"This is a great competition f 01:
us and we want to come in will\
an attitude that we a.re trying to
win this tournament." Vargas
said. "We are going in with the
attit\,\de that we want to gain
Jom~~g from every single
game and try fo·"fea.rn som~
thing." .
"With playing at home,· it's nic;Q
to have the comforts of being at
home, as it really doesn't disrupt
your daily schedule, but also
there's the pressure, too," the 35-
year-old coach said.
Duplanty, the team's goalkeep·
er, riot only likes the proximity of
the tournament, but praises the
facility at Corona del Mar High,
too.
#It's an awesome "facility. All
the teams love com.jng her~.
Coming here to Newport Beach
and Corona d~l Mar, they.love th4'
area," Duplanty said. "It is cer-
tainly one of the most popul?r
spots for any of the teams." .
Oeding, who was the Olympic
squad's second-leading scorer
and currently coaches at Orange
Coast College, said, "It's going to
be great support for us. It's a
change from playing in foreign
countries with just your team-
mates for support. It's going to be
exciting to have everyone 16cally
behind us and see how we're per·
forming."
That performance of which
Oeding speaks could be an insp1·
rational show for many young ·
sters who are just getting interest·
ed. in the game, and playing at
higher levels.
