two-year effort to get a liquor
license for a new restaurant in
Cannery Village, the local musi-
cian bas come out the winner.
But those opposing his license
5'y it's not over yet.
Wood, 40, applied for a state
liquor license in October 1995,
after he leased the former Cafe
Udo on 30th Street, where be
planned to open the'• Hide Out.
Last week, an administrative
law judge ruled on appeal in
favor of Wood's application, pro-
vided he complies with 25 spe-
cial conditions ..
But a subsequent uproar over
crime and drunkenness in the
area, where residents dwell
among the many bars, quashed
his attempt to get a license on
the first try. Village residents
protested his application, saying
the area can't handle any more
liquor sellers, no matter who
those sellers are.

City planne~ cl~ms rights violated
• Costa Mesa official Art Hopkins says he was
reprimanded by his bo~se& after he spoke at a city
hearing in Huntington Beach, where h e lives.
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
Huntington Beach officials are
investigating a claim by a Costa
'Mesa city planner that he was
intimi4ated by high-ranking city
employees at his job in Costa
Mesa after he opposed a major
Huntington Beach redevelop-
ment project.
Art Hopkins, a Huntington
Beach resident, said he was ver-
bally reprimanded by · his boss
soon after testifying at a Hunting-
ton Beach Planning Commission
hearing in February.
The hearing was held to dis-
cuss Plaza Almeria, a $20 million
residential and commercial devel-
opment, and Hopkins, who lives
directly across the street from the
project, said it would cause too
much tralfic and noise in down-
town Huntington Beach.
The project was eventually
approved, but last week Hopkins
told the City Council a videotape
of furn speaking at the meeting
was sent to his supervisor, Costa
Mesa Assistant Director of Devel-
opment Perry Valantine, by Hunt-
ington Beacli officials.
As a result, Hopkins said be
was scolded and feels his rights to
speak as a resident were violated.
But Valantine said he knew
nQ1b.ing of Hopkins speaking and
ttlft'he was not reprimanded.
Still, at last week's Huntington
Beach City Council meeting,
Hopkins -his voice shaking -
called the incident "distwbing"
and urged city leaders to look into
it.
"I consider this a major viola-
tion of my civil rights and I think
it should be investigated,• Hop-
kins said.
Huntington Beach Councilman
Dave Sullivan, who c.alled the
allegation "as serious a chMge as
I've heard on the council," was
furious that a, Huntington ijeach
employee would reportedly tJ:y to
intimidate a citizen out of exercis-
ing his right to speak. • •
"Damn it, I want an mveitiga-
tion of tlus," Sullivan shouted,
slamming his hand on the council
dais. .. I demand an investiga-
tion.•
City Administrator Mike
Uberuaga agreed and assigned
Assistant City Adminis~ator Ray
Silver, who oversees the develop-

• EDITOR'S NOTE: Victoria Elementary tea¢ier Eri-
ca Garrett is one of 40 teachers helping the New-
port-Mesa Unified School District decide on reading
materials for next year by trying them out in her
classroom. Dally Pilot staff writer Michelle Terwil-
leger will report on her: and her students' reaction
to the various texts over the next few months.
I n the midst of reading 11\ucation debates
about whole language vs. phonics, first-
grade teacher Erica Garrett sees Silver
Burdett Gino's •uterature Works" as a fair
compromise.
Garrett, who works at Victoria Elemen-
tary in Costa Mesa, is one of 40 teachers try-
ing out reading books with her stt1dents
before the school district decides on its new
curriculum.
Hlt's so repetitive the interest isn't as
high," she said. "But they are proud that
they can read it."
With the proposed •uterature Works"
text, the first graders have read "Baby Rat-
tlesnake" by Lynn Moroney and Native
...American storyteller Te Ata, a story about a
rattlesnake who wanted his rattle before he
was old enough.
During her reading group, Alex Huskey,
7, said, "l want to read this story again. I
like this story."
Said Garrett: •Real stories are something
kids can be interested in. I've enjoyed
working with the series. It has ready-made
centers and charts."
need. . .. It's integrating reading books and
spelling books."
· In her teaching style, Garrett emphasizes
phonics by encouraging students to sound
out unfamiliar words and to use sounds to
figure out spelling.
During a recent spelling test, Garrett
said "Told," and her students said the word
slowly, letting it roll around in their mouths
before they wrote it down.
Garrett said it again slowly: "Tt-ole-
Duh." .
When helping the kids sound out words
with a long •1• sound, she points to her eye.
When the words have a long Me," she puts
her hands over her head like she is on a

•People think you have to have whole
Language or have phonics," she said. "This
is a combination of both .... It makes it fun.
It makes it hands-on,"
In Garrett's class, the literature-based
reading is tempered with phonics activities
such as a center where kids pair pictures
and words with boxes labeled •tong a,"
"short u " and other vowel sounds.
Garrett will use the •uterature Works"
text for the rest of the month and then will.

For most of the year, Garrett has been
using a McGraw Hill phonics-based text
that lacks the "real literature" that the
whole-language approach emphasizes, but
instead has what Garrett calls a •controlled
text."
The activities provided with the curricu-
lum have helped the students, Garrett said.
MThe kids' spelling scores have
improved," she said. "They're spelling the
same words in the stories and at the cen-
ters."
And they have helped her.
The district is also considering adopting
reading textbooks by publisher Harcourt

The McGraw Hill book is repetitive with
passages such as, NJ can read. I can do·it. I can
read a book. Can you do it? Can you read?"
"Before you bad to create (activities]
yourself," Garrett said . MTo me, it's what we
GaJTett will judge the texts by different
criteria, including how students perform on
tests before and after using the materials.
But for Garrett, the bottom line is the flexi-
bility and how well it applies to kids at dif-
ferent reading levels.

So many options, so little time
M~while, bdck at the ranch
When last we visited the folks
in Santa Ana Heights, we were all
looking frantically for our water
company stock certificates while
making alternate plans about bow
to spend the $1,100 bonanza we
were being offered for what we
regarded as lbrowaway stock.
As we left the scene a few
weeks ago, a highly suspect offer
of $1,200 from another water com-
pany had just arrived, raising
hopes of a bidding war and leav-
ing us in some confusion about
what to do.
Today, that original confusion
seems like a walk in the park. The
'Plot -like the water being

truly thickened. The modest col-
lection of printed material I had
attached to my stock certificate
bas now grown into a massive pile .
of conflicting claims, counter-
claims, charges, counter-charges
and deadlines as slippery as the

and curiouser.
And all this over a tiny, nonde-

served a relative handful of yeo-

more than four decades.
A few nights ago, I was invited

hopefully distilled of self-serving
· hokum, are my perceptions:
• After spending a good deal of
time, money and effort, the IRWD
has probal,>ly accumulated more
than the 51 % of the stock tenders
it needs to take over the Santa
Ana Heights Water Co. Hbwever,
many of these tenders either lack
the stQck. certificates or are tied up
with banks, making the actual
count cloudy.
• It is doubtful that the IRWD
will go through with the purchase
unless it can acquire substantially
more than 51 % of the stock
because, says Plisco, "they don't
want an angry minority of stoek-
holders." That's why the deadline
for tendering stock has been
extended three times (currently to
May 30) and may continue to be
extended indefinitely.
• A number of disquieting
reports have come in from stock-
holders claiming IRWD represen-
tatives said they would lose their
$1,100 if they didn't tender their
stock immediately. This is not true.
A MacKenzie spokesman told me
without equivocation that "late
tenders will be cashed out if the
offer is accepted•;
•The dream of the$1,100
bonanza is a snare and delusion.
First off, there is great reluctance
even to guess how long it will
take to get to the payoff stage.
• Second, the money will be
subject to capital gains tax. And,
finally, what is left will be returned
piecemeaJ through increased rates .
needed to pay for all the current ·
consultants and mailings. As Plis-
co put it, "The rustom~ always
finally pays for everything.• So
the $1,100 is really a highly tax-
able loan, and a strong case can
be lJlade for a token stotlc pay-·
ment apd reduced rates. . ·
• In spite of continued multiple
mailings, Mesa Consolidated has
chosen to remain in the back.-
ground with a fuzzy $1,200 per
share off er based on the current
stockholders rejecting the m.wo
so Mesa can step in and acquire
the Santa Ana Heights Water Co.
• Roger Swnmers -who seeks
an independeqt evaluation of the
Santa Ana Heights district -was
robbed in his effort to win a seat
on the board of directors. No one
to my knowledge denies that he
came lQ a board meeting armed
with more than enough votes; but
election inspectors and board
members say he did not properly
submit them.
Summers told me that the
meeting was adjourned abruptly
without announcing a vote, and
when his announced total the fol-
lowing day was far less than he
brought to the meeting and he
asked to see his allegedly defec-
tive ballot, he was.told it couldn't
be found. He and his supporters
have asked the California attorney
general to investigate.
There's more, but this gives you
the idea. The question keeps
recurring, why all this agitation
and high-powered pressure over
what would appear on the surface
to be a routine transaction?
• As one of my neighbors said
while leaving._the meeting;,._with
Plisco: »These guys are trying too
hard to sell us something, and as
an ol~ salesman, when somebody
tries to do that I begin to wonder."
Me, too. That's why I'm going
to sit tight with my share of stock.
Th.ts isn't over yet.

including Estancia right fielder nm Ludtke, whose line drive in
the fourth inning cleared the
short porch for his first varsity
ding er.
There is no sign in left-center
displaying the distance from
home plate. but the length down
the line in left field is 315 feet and
the fence cuts back as it stretches
deeper into the outfield.
•I've never measured it, so I
don't know how far it is," Laguna
Hills Coach Pete Tereschuk said.
"People always ask me. I tell
them if they want to measure it, go
ahead. The other team can hit
(home runs) over it, too, you know."
Laguna Hills cleanup hitter
Nick Harvey popped one over
the pocket-size alley in left-cen-
ter with two aboard in the first,
giving the Hawks (8-7-1) a lead
they would never abandon.
Later, Ludtke ripped his home
run, then Laguna Hills leadoff
hitter Ryan Johnson punched one
in the same spot for a solo jack in
the sixth.
"Ob, it's 300 feet to straight-
away center,• Estancia Coach
Paul 1Toxel said. "It's so embar-
rassing to them, they took the
(300-foot sign) down a few years
ago. You can lose a lot of balls
here on pop flies."
While the Eagles (2-12-1, 0-5-
1 in league) are still in search of
their first PCL win of 1997. they
played well enough in spots to
push the Hawks.· The Eagles
made no errors on defense and
threatened in every inning
except the fifth and seventh.
Laguna Hills starter Justin
Stanfield worked into the sixth
inning and defeated Estancia for
the sixth time in his three-year
varsity career, giving up four hits
and two runs.
With one out in the Eagle
fourth, Juan Romo walked, then
Ludtke unloaded a line drive that
appeared to be headed for the
gap. But it cleared the fence for a
two-run homer, cutting the
Hawks' lead to 3-2.
Laguna Hills, which tied
Estancia in the first meetin,g this
season, 6-6, for its only PCL
smear, scored a run in the bottom
of the fo\lrttl on Kevin McCaf·
frey'a RBJ siligle.
Jared Novak's two-run single
gave Laguna Hills a commanding
6-2 lead in the fifth, then Johnson
ripped one over the short porch
from the left side of the plate for a
7-llead. ~CDMJL.IMUI ....... , ...... J

CRUISING AlTITUD.E
Sailors flying high after the_ir easy
sweep of Irvine, 15-9, 15-9, 15-10.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
CRVINE -This Friday the Newport Har-
bor High boys volleyball team will host a
showdown with its Sea View League arch
rival and cross-town nemesis Corona del
Mar ... and there probably isn't a better state
of mind that its players could have than the
one they do right now.
"Big,• is the adjective Newport's Coach
Dan Glenn used to .describe Friday's 6:15
p.m. match, and his Sailors appear to be
ready to rise to the challenge after a nearly
flawless three-set sweep over league foe
Irvine at the Vaqueros1 gymnasium Tuesday
evening.
ulbis was a h uge win. (Irvine) is a very
good team and Mark Mednick is a very
good coach,· Glenn said after the Sailors'.
15-9, 15-9, 15-tO win.
In the first set, Newport (5-4, 2-1) got an
early lead and built it up when Scott Arch-
oold served from 8-6 to 11-6. Sophomdre Ty
1Tarnblie nailed an ace for the 14th point
and sent over the winner, as well. • "
The sleek dominance displayed by the
Sailors was accentuated with powerful
blocking, lfamblie's efficient passes from
the back row and the relative ease setter
lfavis Nelson showed in making perfect
sets.
"We'd been working on (blocking) in
practice and really focusing on that this
week," Glenn said. "It's nice to see some-
thing you've been working on look good in
the game.•
Sophomore middle blocker Adam Hearl-
son, who stands at 6-foot-6, assisted on six
combined blocks and sent one back solo.
Senior Dana Mesenbrink added five com-
bined blocks. Nelson, Archbold, Rick Robin-

1Tamblie's passes don't stand out as an
individual statistic, but the efficiency was
noticed.
"We really look for him to do that. He1s
calling more balls and being a little more
aggressive so we can run more stuff in the
middle and have some options,• Glenn said.
In the third set, Glenn utilized bis bench
and the flustered Vaqueros committed four
unforced errors to take the score from an
Irvine 3-1 advantage to 5-3 Newport Harbor
before the Sailors pulled away for the 15-10
clincher.
Mesenbrink, who was suffering from a
· stomach flu, slammed down eight kills.
Hearlson and Archbold tallied seven apiece.
Nelson put up 27 assists. ~
The Sailors' win kept Irvine winless in the
league with a 3-0 mark. Corona del Mar,
ranked second in Orange County, has not
lost a league contest. - '
• Stage appears set for Friday's
showdown with rival Newport
Harbor after Sea Kings punish
Chargers in four Tuesday night.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
CORONA DEL MAR -The Corona
del Mar' High boys volleyball team
showed a little something.different to the
Sea View League scouts in attendancj! at
Tuesday night's 15-8, 12-15, 15-9, 15-10
victory over visiting El Toro.
Upcoming opponents bent on devis-
ing schemes to stop senior outside hitter
Blair Hoppe, the Sea Kings' celebrated
"go-to" guy, might want to reconSider
· after witnessing the play of 6-foot-1
senior outside bitter nm Andrews and 6-
5 sophomore middle blocker DenniS
Alshuler.
"Everyone knows who Blair is,• said
CdM Coach Steve Conti, whose team,
ranked fifth in Orange County, improved
to 6-1, 3-0 in league. •Most teams con-
centrate their blocking schemes on him,
but that has opened things up a little for
(Andrews).•
The 6-3 Hoppe, a two-time All-New-
port-Mesa District performer, still man-
aged a team-high 15 kills and also and
four blocks.
But Andrews added 12 kills to his typ-
ically solid defense, while Alshuler col-
lected five blocks and 11 kills.
"I would say nm is a bit of a sleeper,"
Conti said. "He's definitely not the guy
the other team is keying on, but he bas
started to take advantage of that. When
he gets lt going, teams have to adjust
and that just opens things up for Blair.•
Conti said Alshuler's emergence on
the block, as well as on the quick (hit-
ting) attack, was another key to topping
the Chargers.
"We've been workitlg bard to
imp(OVe our middle, especially in transi-
tion,· Conti explained. "Dennis had a
super match tonight•
Conti did express concern over some
lackluster spurts by the Sea Kings. who
: seemed intent on keeping El Toro ( 1-2 in
• league) in the match longer than it had a .
• right to. .
: uwe need to i!Qprove our conllSten-
: cy," said Conti, wbo watched the Charg-! ers rally from a 9--4 defidt to tie the final
: •. game, before a well-placed Andrews
: serve led to a CdM point. Key kills by ! Hoppe, Alshuler and Andrews quickly
: followed to help end the match in four
: games and send the Sea Kings into Fri·
: day's Back Bay showdown with host ! Newport Harbor.
: Conti also praised the wort of senior ! setter Steve Reese.
: •The first garlte may have been
: Steve's best of the season.• Callti said.

DAVC ULLMAN, STAHOING IN CENT£R. CHECKS RACE CONOITIONS
Water may make up nearly 70
percent of lhe human body, but for
Ua~ Ullman the substance makes up
most of lus life. Last year. the 51-year-
old Newport native and resident spent
47 weekends on the ocean and most of
the week.~ a.' well. The timl' spenl on
deck led to his being named as l<olcx

sport requires a lot of experience and is
verv mental. hut the ocean 1s the most
beautiful arena. What could be nicer>"
Thl' esteemed yachtsman bel!an

with his fother. who owned a hoat

"It was the thing to do lhen," he said

I le now ~pends alx>ut 80 pcrcenl of
thl· lime on the water sailing boats for
otht:rs and ahout 20 percent of the
time for himself. Although he's owned
the Scavenger. a PR 42 for the past
three ar.d one-half years, the Balboa
Yacht Club member has only been on 11
a handful of times.
When a.bout 600 boats in 17 classes
line up for I.he start of the 50lh Annual

Hughes of Santa Barbara. • "It's exciting because of the number
of boats involved," Ullman said. "It's
certainly the largest big boat event in
this area. Anytime you have a ran~e of
about 500 boats, it's pretty exciting.
especially at the start."
While about one-I.hi rd uf the
part1c1panL~ in this year's regatta will
be out there for a big party with friends
and family and for I.he fesl1V1ltes 111
Ensenada. for Ullman it's another day
at work.
"I'm interested in racing, not the
social side of the event:· Ullman
explained. "I J<1 this all the lime."
To physically prepare for a race,
Ullman and his crew will usually
practice up to a week before an event.
Mentally. Ullman doesn't be lieve in
sports psychology bul relies on
confidence.
"The difference at the upper level of
racing is the preparation," he said. "I've
coached and competed at U1e Olympic
level and if vou have confidence you're
ready to go and if you don't, it won't
come. You build confidence by
practicing."
The veteran sailor estimates that he
has raced in the Newport to Ensenada
event anywhere from 15 to 20 limes.
His fastest finish has been in the 12 to
14 hour range when sailing a Santa
Cruz 70.
"This is one of eight Highpoint
races. so it's just as important as any in
the series, such as the Transpac," he
said."They're all scored the same."
Once he completes the NOSA race,
he'll either fly lo Acapulco or San
Prant:isco for another regatta.
According to Vllplao. the key to
winning the Newport to Ensenada
Yacht Race is
determined at
night Wet
decks or dry
decks are the
·crucial
indicator of
conditions
during the
evening and
determine
how to sail
the rest of th~
course. ·
"If the
decks are dry
at night. you
want lo head
toward the
beach, but if
the decks are
,.,. SY a. c:-.. wet. it's best
to go outside
the Coronado Islands," Ullman said. •
According to Ullman, dry decks
mean that there is no marine layer and
that winds would be found closer to
the beach. But if the decks are wet.
then th ere hasn't been enough wind lo
blow the marine layer away and it's
"Sailing at night is much more by
feel and experience is the key," he said.
"You use a lot more of your senses
other than just vision. You need to
have a feel for whether or not the wind
is good and for your placement on the
race course. At night. you an see
lights from the other boats but it's
diltkult to determine their size."
tnlman's strategy is-to race first
against boats in the same category.
Prom there, he said it's just I~ .
against the rest of the fleel H
estimated that there WOl}I~ 8 to 20
boats at the same leve! of competition.
"The first day is pretty easy, because
you can see everyone and nothing is
very tricky.~ tnlman said. "Well,
Laguna is sometimes tricky because
there's not much wind and people have
a tendency to go that direction because
it's shorter."
Qepending on conditions, Ullman
' ~ the average speed of his boat to
be around nine or 10 knots. The race
has had light winds for the past few
yurs, but he is hoping conditions will
improve thi~nce weather occurs
in cycles.
"You just ~l to push the boat as
hard as you can down the c:ouhe and •
Ullman and his crew have raced
together before cmd are looking
forward to a solid, steady race.
The rare times that Ullman is on

tnlman Sails can be located at his
Balboa Peninsula business. The
company specialiusfo producing
racing Qles for all sizes of boats.
Ullman worked in the same buiJding
while in high school, as.an employee
for another saiJ maker and returned in
1971, when his business moved in.
As the wi'nner Of the Rolex award,
Ullman's schedule is even fuller this
year, with coaching and teaching
assignments in addition to sailing. He
credits his wife, Linda Tuylor, for her
support and said that she encouraged
him to tlke advantage of this year's
opportunities. She and their 12-year-
old son, Charlie, will occasionally travel
with him, such as on their most recent
trip to France where Dave si>ent a week

children.

The last remaining 1946 Mercury Sportsman ever manufactured will be f E t
featured at the event. The rar~ automobile is the only one in existence, as the 0 ven s
other three Sportsmans that are known were privately constructed from 1946-48
Mercury convertible coupes. The car's authenticity and history are clear, wit!' body
number 382 and serial number l 140582.
Henry Ford presented the first Sportsman that he built to his love, actress Ella
Raines ~ Christmas Day, 1945. Once the bubbles fizzled out of their champagne
romance, Raines sold the car, about two years later. No one knows the ·
whereabouts of that first Sportsman. The Mercury Sportsman had a short-lived
career. The first production model rolled off the assembly line in April 1946 and
the last unit was completed in November of the same year. Only 205 units were
produced. The automobile's retail price was $2,078.
Additionally, Clark Gable's 1939 Packard Darrin Convertible will be among the
classic cars on display. Based upon the 1939 Packard 180 chassis with a super
eight engine. the vehicle was designed and constructed by Howard MDutch" Darrin

in his.Sunset Boulevard shop in 1939. Gable is reputed to ti.ave been lhe first
owner of the autorriobile, which he purchased from and later returned to Darrin.
The actor's dissatisfaction was due to1he car's low profile and its "cut down"
doors. At inter~, Gable's fansweuld reach into the car and attempt to tear
' at his clothing for a souvenir.
Spectators win also see a 1937 Cord Phaeton convertible, the four-lime Auburn.
Cord, Dusenberg National Champion. The car was restored in the early '80s and
has front wheel drive with a four speed pre-selector transmission. Small cranks on
each side of the dashboard are osed to raise the headlights, while the windshield
wipers are individually controlled. Everett Laben Cord, the original owner and
designer of the car, favored cream colored Chapparal cigarettes and had his car
painted to match.
A 1947 Chrysler Towne & Country Woodie convertib~ ~ ~e favored car for
movie stars and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, will be on display at the show.
The envy o( the Hollywood set, heads turned as Bob Hope, Hopalong Cassidy and
Barbara Stanwyck drove down Sunset Boulevard in their Towne & Country
convertibles. One of the most exciting post World War II production cars built. the
Towne and Country was introduced in 1946. At the time. auto manufactums were
.turning out face-lifted 1942 models to a public hungry for new cars, while
Chrysler took the time to bring out a really new and magnificent car. The auto's
~price ~$2,743-big bucks at the time. The name wil.fcoined by Mr.
Boyertown, builder of the car's wood bodies. .
''When you looked at the front o( the car, it looked 'Town' and when you looked
at the back it looked 'country,"' Boyertown said. _
Unfortunat~ly. the car was manufactured for just three short years, from 1946·
48. The tremendous amount of hand craftsmanship that went into construction
accounted for its high price and probably contributed to its demise. Looking at
this car reminds one of bobby sox. boogie woogie, drive-ins and .. Moonlight .
Serenade."

The U.S. Sailing Team: the Quest Continues.
. .
Members of the U.S. Sailing Tel"m
know that wifming takes performance
and endurance. Qualities aJso found
in the Rolex Oyster.
Part of what makes the Oyster
so dependable is the design of its
rugged case, which is sculpted
from solid metal. To the case,
we add our winding crown which
keeps dust and moisture from the
movement. One final addition to
the case is the synthetic sapphire
crystal. The case, winding crown,
and crystal protect the Rolex move-
ment under adverse sailing conditions.
Which explains why so many
sailors find a Rolex is one thing
they can't do without.,And why Rolex
supports t'he U.S. S~iling Team.
