• EDfTOR'S NOTE: The Newport-Mesa Unified
ScQool District has changed graduation require-
ments to include 40 hours of service wor1t. We
asked Pau~ Bogenrief of the Ass.istance League
of NewAIS'rt·Meia what kind of WOO. their stu-
dent volunteers could expect.
What work woµld you have the stu-
dents dot
Assisteens participate in a wide vari-
ety of community service activities. 'This
past year, Ass1steens volunteered at
Orangewood. Children's Home, decorat-
ed Rose Parade floats, helped at the Spe-
cial Olympics, served senior citizens at
the Oasis Pancake Breakfast, built
homes for Habltat ·for Humanity and
helped raise funds for Hoag Hospital.
How much work could you get out
them in 40 hourst
One 9f the attractions'of our organiza-
tion is t.'hat the work we do is highly
leveraged. For example, a student who
works 40 hours in the thrift shop raises
funds that are then used to provide den-
tal care to children wbo otherwise could
not afford it. A student who spends two
hours making a baby blanket provides
countless hours of comfort to a foster
• child.
Have high school students been
good workers 1n the past1
Our Assisteens have been great
workers! Part of the reason is that we
select projects that the students are
excited about and where they can see
that their efforts really make a differ-
ence.
What beneUt would the students get
from volunteerlngt
Working in these projects changes the
lives of our Assisteens. The work is
hands-on and it naturally leads to
provocative discussions about the issues.
Students often develop a passion for
issues they otherwise wouldn't be
exposed to. They learn to value the role
of philanthropy and develop a desue to
continue with philanthropic work as
adults.
What volunteer work do yoa clot
Assisteens is a mother/daughter pro-
gram. So I work alongside my daughter
and her f~ends in all the projects.

After worrying Ul(rt Rupert, the unof-

Wassell-Kelty has reported that Rupert
and bis newly adopted mate, Pearl, are
swimming happily togetller.
Pearl, a freshwater bud, was
released Wednesday after being caged

Rupert, a swan that she adopted seven
years ago, and Pearl would mate. · '
On the first morning, Rupert was m no

Good news for departing se'niors
I I attended the school board
meeting last Tuesday, and
there is information that
you peed. However, it can wait
one more week. If Peter Buff a
can address the graduating
seniors, so can I.
Seniors,
Every speaker will tell
you, •The world is your oyster,
just open it up and get the
pearl.• Well, no one is going to
hand you the pearl. The bad
news is that you have to work
for it. The good news is that you
have received the tools, during
your years from kindergarten
through 12th grade, to pry that I sucker open.
The even better news for you
is that your generation could
live a really long time. You
could live to be 120 years old or
older. The bad news is that you
will have to work for a corre-
spondingly longer period of
tilne. When humans only lived
to be 35 years old, they only
bad to work for 25 years. Ho.w·
ever, if you live to be 120, you
need to work for ·about 80 years.
That still gives you a lot of gold·
en years in comparison to the
Middle Ages, when retirement
began at death. But, don't count
on only working for 30 years.
For that reason, you better fig-
. ure ·out what your passion is,
and try to make money doing it.
You also better figure on obtain-
ing skills that lead to flexibility.
Your job 70 years from now may
not have been thought of yet.
Most job skills boil down to
the following: read, write,
speak, listen, think, and ana-
lyze. So, whatever path you
take in the next few years,
whether it is in the halls of
higher learning or not, keep
those skills in mind. Try to mas-
ter and improve them on a daily
basis. The saddest words to
hear are: • 1 don't need to learn
about that because it is not part
of the assignment.• Don't let
your learning be dictated solely
by the parameters of a project.
Qse the project to get you start-
ed delving into an area you
hadn't thought abouf before.
Let your mind massage the con-
cepts as you are driving to work
or playing basketball. The

and add land caping around the
store.
Residents petitioned comm.15-
saoners for relief, saying the city's
first priority should be to resolve
parkin9 and traffi~sues that the
store creates.
•1 don't understand how local
government, which is supposed
to have our best interests in'rnind,
allows us to suffer from the tw-
moU of the store's trucks and traf-
fic roaming through our streets at
all times of the night,• said Cyn-
Uua Brooks, a nearby resident.
The issue of the traffic-phasing
ordinance took on a volatile tone
the last few months. After plan-
ning cormrussioners approved it
Thursday with a c.la.ri.fication,
environmental activist Allan
Beek still chastised the panel for
typographical errors in the ordi-
nance.
City Manager Homer Bludau
said residertts should carefully
study the ordinance before criti-
cizmg it.
"U we sat down with [every-
one), and they can see what .J
minor changes we've had, then
this would be easier to under-
stand," Bludau said .
The regulations call for the city
to make improvements to streets
and traffic signals before devel-
opers compiete their projects. It
then requires developers to pay
for the improvements caused by
the added volume of cars from
n1'!W housing or businesses.
T he Eastbluff Ele-

PTA raised tnore
than $10,000 on Sunday
during a family picnic
fund-raiser for the new
school, which will open
in the fall.
Nearly 400 residents
jo10ed in the picnic fun,
participating in water
balloon tosses, raffles,
'clJld some donated $100
each to paint ceramic
tiles which will be per-•

the new school.
Proceeds will provide
Eastbluff students with
essential educational
enrichment programs in
the areas of art, music,
science, technology and
physical education.
Several local busi-

Following his stint at
OCC, Poley enjoyed
success at Stanford, 1 where be was selected · er won two Super Bowls as head
coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
•At the college level, the head
coach is such a big deal, but it's
the position coaches who you
spend so much time with you on
an individual basis," Foley said.
"It was really qu}te an intens-e
relationship a.r:id (Seifert) was a
heck of a guy to play for. He
taught me more about football in
my first spring practice than I'd
ever learned in my life."
Foley, who feels honored to
have played under so many
outstanding coaches, including
OCC Coach Dick Tucker for two
seasons, is an easy choice for the
Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame to
commemora te the millennium.
Though Foley is best known
as a football player, it was during
Newport Harbor's track season
his junior year (spring of 1975)
that turned the most heads.
With Bryant Humann, Vmnie
Mulroy and anchor Brian Theriot
(Foley ran third), the Sailors' mile
relay team won the prestigious
Arcadia Invitational and knocked
off two-time def ending CIF
Southern SeCtion 4-A champion
Muir. •There was just something
unbelievable about that night,"
Foley said. "I don't think four
guys were ever so excited."
The team established a school
record in the mile relay that
night (3:16.7), then later that
spring captured the CIF 4-A
championship (3:18.9) and the
· Masters Meet (3:17.9), before
placing second at the state meet.
In Foley's junior year in
football, the Sailors (10·2) won
the Sunset League title with a
talented cast that included
quarterback Steve Bukich.
As a senior, Foley, a two-time
All-Sunset League running back,
rushed for 939 yards and 12
touchdowns in 182 carries (5.1
yards per carry), a season
highlighted by Newport Harbor's
year-ending 21-3 victory ·
over Edison, which featured
quarterback Rick Bashore and
entered the game ranked No. t
to play in the 1980 Hula Bowl his
senior year. •
"At OCC, I got my grades up
and applied myself (academically)
and that made a big difference,"
Foley said. •I gTew up sort of a 1 beach rat, surfing and playing
volleyball."
At Stanford, Foley earned -1
game balls against Oregon State

he returned an interception 60
yards for a touchdown, and
against UCLA as a senior, whenj
he bad 14 touchdown-saving •
tackles and two quarterback
sacks on safety blitzes.
Foley, who later had tryouts
with NFL teams, knocked down
a pass in the waning seconds of
the 1978 Bluebonnet Bowl to
help preserve Stanford's upset
victory over Georgia, 25-22.

two s1>ades is weak. If those are your
methods, it is simply a matter of
whether you should pass or bid four
spades. We think it would be cow-

shaft when you have no idea where
you want to play the conlrllCt. So it
1s simply a question of whether you
should respond one spade or two
clubs. Bid two clubs. 1f you show
spades first and clubs later. partner is
hkely to assume Y<f have a five-
card sp.~e suit.

Your right-hand opponent or.ns the
bidding with one diamon . Wha
action do you take?
A -To double asks for trouble s1noe
panner is almost sure to bjd some
number of soades. An ovcrcall of
two clubs wlth such a shoddy suit is
as unthinkJlble. That leaves the
choice betweeri11ass lllld an overcall
of one hemt. With uch a good four-
card suit , we would hop in at the
one-level without giving the mauer a
second thought.
Q 6 • Neither vulnerable. as South
you hold:

The bidding hllS proceeded:

?
What do you bid now?
A -While you only have 12 points
in high cards, you have tremend9us
lrick7taking potential. Therefore; you
should have no qualms about tho •
high reverse of three clubs. If part-
ner has a fit for either of your suits,
a slam is likely. •
