lf you think being young is fun, just Wait
S. omewhere m this great
nation of ours, there is a
government agency or a
pri~ate business that keep$
track of the ages of all our citi-
zens. Thus, when one becomeli
65, his or her name 1s furnished
to all those businesses that cater
to the problems of the elderly.
At that point, all of us who are
elderly begin to get junk mail,
tons of junk mail. Everyone gets
jwik mail, but you ain't seen
junk mail until you get old.
At first I opened some of the
stuff. Now I throw 1t m the
wastebasket unopen~d. Howev-
er, before I adopted that prac-
tice, I bad been offered lavish
accommodations at rest homes
or old folks' homes from San
Diego to Halifax and from Key
West to Sea.ttle. Of course, they
were not called rest homes or
old folks' homes, just clever
euphemisms that made an old
folks' home sound like some-
thing between a five-star hotel
and the world's most expensive
cruise ship. The accompariying
picture invariably showed a
happy couple, each with beauti-
ful white hair and not a wrinkle
between them. At that point
you realize that you have wast-
ed the first 65 years of your life.
Being young was really a drag.
Being old 1s fun.
THE VERDICT
As I said, I had .long since
quit opening those brochures.
Then, just the other day, I
received a piece of junk mail
that was the size and shape of a
Hershey bar, the flat kind, not
the one with nuts. lntngued, I
opened it and found not a free
Hershey bar but a stack of 4-
by-6 cards, each extolling the
wonders of becoming old. I
started to throw the whole stack
away, then noticed that the fust
one had a message I couldn't
ignore. It read, "Revolutionary
breakthrough -all natural
antiaging formula.• It said I
could •reverse the aging
process throl\gh a humari·
growth hormone stimulator,•
and that I could "look and feel
younger• and that this product
was •a natural fountain of
youth."
Well, when you're 88, you
don't want to miss out on
something that is going to
reverse the aging process. I
turned over the card, and what
do you know? Viagra was the
product. 1 understand it is
bemg advertised by the man I
voted tor for president a couple
of years ago.
Well, I wouldn't mind
reversing the aging process,
but I would like to do it for my
whole body, not just one part of
it. I can sec myself, a dodder-
ing, pitiful, helpless old man
with one part of my body alive
and vibrant. Ugh!
While not interested in Via-
gra, I was intrigued, so J looked
at the next cards. Several
advertised prostate surgery.
One really fascinated me. It
read, "If the neighbor's dog
wakes you up five times a
night, you'd strangle it." That
made sense. However, that
wasn't the answer. The answer
was, "So what are you doing
about your prostate?" Beats me.
Strangling the dog, even
though I'm a dog lover, made
better sense than relying on my
prostate to keep the dog from
waking me up five times a
night.
There were the usual cards
inviting me to seminars on
estate planning to save estate
taxes. I get those almost daily.
There are a lot of hungry
lawyers and CPAs out there.
There was one advertising a
"bosom buddy." l was interest-
ed until I read the whole card
and it was addressed to women·
who have had breast surgery.
Finally. I came to the one
that really mterested me. 'For a
couple thousand bucks, I could
get a funeral with, and I quote,
•a cloth-covered casket, com-
plete funeral serv'ices, memori-•
dl folders, thank-you cards, all
professional services, flower
van, hearse and guest book.•
Now that's a real bargain, par-
ticularly with a flower van and
guest book
The moral of all this is that if
you get something in the mail
that looks like a Hershey bar,
the flat one, not the one W1th
nuts, throw 1t in the wastebas-
ket If not, the idea of growmg
old will make you so excited
you'll never be satisfied with
youth.

•The school district and
police train for a possible
hostage situation.
JESSK:A GARRISON
lkltf,.,.
NEWPORT-MESA -Instead
of going to school last Thursday,
Costa Mesa High School junior
Todd Dudderidge spent the day
locked in an elementary school
classroom with a madman.
Outside the window, gun-toting
~"ta Mesa Police officers assem-
bled a Special Weapons and Tac-
tics commando post. then stormed
the school. ending Todd's eight·
hour ordeal.
"It went really well," enthused
Lt Ron Smith. who coordinates the
Costa. Mesa police department's
SWAT team.
And no one was hurt in the
department's first-ever such emer-
gency drill.
The police department and the
school district collaborated on the
training drill to make sure both
agencies are prepared in the event
of a tragedy like the one that took
place in LltUeton, Colo. .
Smith, the police department's
spokesman, said he dreamed up
the exercise before the Columbine
High School tragedy. After the
school shootings, police decided to
ask the school district to partici-
pate in developing procedures to
use if SQJnething similar happened
locally.
Smith approached Connie
Dudderidge, who heads risk man-
agement• for the district. She, in
turn, drafted her son, Todd; her
nephew, Jeffrey Edelblute; her
assistant, Georgia Siler, and Costa
Mesa High School security guard
RK:hard Gomez to take part in a
play-acting exercise.
Smith saipted the scenario to
test the abilities of his SWAT team
members.
One of the ~i~est hurdles offi. cers face in situations, be
said, is dealing with the idea that
they may have to shoot a child
who is threatening other students.
"Some of us~ old enough to
have kids that age," Smith said,
"One of the things we have to con-
tend with now is, can we take the
life of {\juvenile?"
ln Thursday's exercise, the two
boys played high school students
at a mock Saturday detention
Siler played their teacher. Gomez
played lliimelf.
A local actor played another
student, enraged because he had
detention instead of aocompany-
ing his classmates on a trip to
Knott's Berry Farm.
"I try to make it as realistic as
possible,• Smith said of the Knott's
Berry Fann detail.
The enraged student took his
classmates hostage, and school
and police officials had to respond
as if the situation were real
Eight hours later, things·ended
as well as could be expected: all of
the hostages were released
unharmed.
Both police and school officials
were enthusiastic about the day's
lessons. Police learned, for exam-
ple, that all students haye ~er
gency car~. detailing theu
addresses a,nd their parents' con-
tact numbers, as well as records
that list whether they have psy-
chological problems.
Dudderidge said the day had
gone "wonderfully," although see-
ing the SWAT team on campus
gave her pause.

Stroller accident raises
safety concerns at store
•Macy's officials say they're dedicated to safety and
are reviewing the incident at South Coast Plaza.
flm1rPlat I .
COSTA MESA -It was
shortly after 1 :30 p.m. Satur-
day at the Macy's in South
Coast Plaza when Bill Sexton
heard a terrible sound.
·1 heard a pop, pop, then
two crunches and then a real-
ly long crunch,• the 63-year-
old Orange County resident
said. ·with the gunfire in this
day and age, you just don't
know what is gomg on."
What was going on started
simply enough: A young cou-
ple from Irvine had loaded
their 4-year-old son in his
stroller and onto the ground-
level escalator.
Sexton and his wife,
Martha, 58, were behind the
couple when the crunching
sound started about a third of
incident. Huntsman, who was
attending Corona del Mar High
School, was stopped by a New-
port Beach police officer for
playing his car stereo too loud.
During a search of the vehicle,
police found a pipe and some
residue believed to be marijtla-
na.
The police didn't cite Hunts-
man fo r possession of drug
paTaphemalia, but reported the
incident to school officials, who
suspended Huntsman soon
• after. . J
Huntsman's civil-rights suit
claims the district acted
iinproperly by suspending him.
The lawsuit still r.emains
against the city of Newport
the way up to the next floor.
"People just started falling
down -just like donunoes, •
Sexton said. •1 saw the esca-
lator just eating up Uie
stroller."
The stroller turned over
backward and began to disin-
tegrate, Sexton said. He
said the child's hands and
hair were going toward the
teeth of the escalator
"That little kid.· Sexton
said. "I thought be was going
to be eaten up by that thing.•
Sexton lifted the child to
safety while employees cut
the escalator's power. ·
The accident shouldn't
have happened, Sexton said.
"They should have a big sign
at eye levef, like they do
· those manager signs." he
said •If they can put the
manager's picture up, then
Beach .• Huntsman's attorney,
David Shores. said he plans to
appeal Monday's dismissal to
the U.S. Supreme Court.
•we will go until we can't go
any further," Shores said.
# Artytime you are on appeal,
it's a setback. It's a teal victory
for the school dIStrict, but the
battle isn't over."
Shores has 60 days ~o submit
an appeal to the 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals.
The lawsuit against the
school district originally was
filed in federal court but was
moved to district court because
the 11th Amendment protects
state agencies from being su~d
f~r money in federal court. On
they Cdn put one up thdt
warns against strollers on
escalators.•
Store safety is u prionty,
sa1d Merle Goldstone, Macy':.
West spokesperson.
"This is somethmg we
obviously try to avoid," Gold-
stone said. "Jlle safety of our
customers is our foremost con-
cern."
Although the company's
accident reports aro pnvatc
information, safety signs are
very vlSlble, Goldstone aid,
adding that theu signs state
that strollers are prohibited on
escalators.
But she didn't rule out the
company adding bigger, more
visible caubon signs in lhP
future.
•As with all dccidents, we
will be reviewing what hap·
pened and will be detemun·
ing what dcllons might be
appropriat~. • she said.
Monday, the Judge cited the
same amendment in clism1ssmg
the swt.
Stokes said the Judge's deci-
sion .adds further credence to
the dlstnct's "zero-tolerance"
policy on drugs dnd alcohol.
Under the policy, Huntsman
was suspended, then trans-
ferred to Newport l larbor High
School.
•It's unfortunate. that this
had to happen in [Huntsman's)
case,• she said. "But the policy
seems to helping. It's a wake·
up call for all of our kids. If you
are caught with drugs or drug
paraphernalia, you will be
expelh;d." \

North's one no trump response wa
a one-round foroe in North-South'•
methOds, and the jump to 1hree
spedes was invitational. North had an
easy raise to four spades.
West led the two of dlJlJllOnds to

and made the key play of ruffing a
diamond. When East showed out on
the lting of spades, Tommy's early
