City Council members plan today to
review whether the city should issue a
permit to an underage nightclub that
attracts from 300 to 700 young people to
dances at the Neighborhood Communi-

Be a literacy tutor.
For years, that familiar public
service pitch beckoned and
haunted me.
What could be better than
teaching someone the joys and
power of' reading? And why
wasn't someone like me -who
has made the printed word my
life's work -sharing that
knowledge with others?
Like most procrastinators, all
the good intentions were there,
but acting on them, well, that was an altogether different story.
Until about three years ago.
That'> when I met Rogelio, a
22-year-old man intent on learn-
ing how to read and write in
English and provide a better life
for his wife and young daughter.
I met Rogellit_after one of our
reporters authorecnr-story about
a program in a nearby library
that matched up literacy tutors
with limited-English speakers.
The goal was to teach them the
language so they could in tum
reati to their children in English.
That was it. Instead of just
watching from the sidelines
while others acted on their
intentions, I decided it was time
to get myseU into the game.
It was one of the best things
I've ever done.

, Santa Man;arita were so
inspired by a trip to the Upper
Newport Bay that-they wrote
the following song. They senr a
copy to Gov. Pete Wilson and
, did an encore performance of
it at Sunday's Earth Day cele·
brat/on:
It was just about a week ago
That I went with my class.
We hiked through Upper
Newport Bay
And, man, we had a blast.
Saw birds, fish, plants and
animals
And lots of artifacts.
But as we walked through
the estuary,
We aJso saw some trash.
Come to the Newport Bay
estuary,
Where the Pacific Ocean
meets San Diego Creek.
Explore and have some fun
In the callfornia sun.
So much to do and see,
It can't be beat.
Come to the Newport Bay
estuary -
Ma~ not be long before it
dies away.
So let the governor know
That you just won't let go
Until he helps clean Upper
Newport Bay.
I never realized before
How special this place is.
It's like no other site I've seen.
It's great for adults and kids.
But something's wrong I found
The silt is building up
From developments up
above the bay,
Creating polluted muck.
One more thing we want
to say
Before our song is through:
If you want to save
Upper Newport Bay,
Then you can help us too.
Many species may
become extinct
If we don't start to act.
So tell the wide world over
That we want our clean
bay back.

Curto said the club is promoted as a

sparring is actual hand-to-hand, or
in the case of tae kwon do, foot-to-
foot combat with an opponent
matching in age, weight and rank.
Yellow-belt Whitney Browman,
10, placed second in both events.
"I really want to go to Ken-
tucky, but if I win, I think I'd have
to go back and rest awhile before
competing again,• she said,
adding that she prefers form over
the more perilous sparring.
"It's really kind of scary
because you don't know what
kind of kicks (the opponent) is
going to throw," she said.
But her brother and yellow-belt
Brett, 12, who placed second and
third at the April 12 tournament,
prefers sparring for that very rea-
son.
•1n sparring, you do what you
can," he said. "In form, I don't like

Neighbors and strangers band
together to clean up neighborhood
,
• A record l,220 people
join effort at Canyon Park
and Wallace and Pomona
avenues.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Dally Pilot
COSTA MESA -A crowd of
1,220 people made a fun-filled
day out of cleaning up a local
neighborhood and park Satur-
day.
The "sell-out crowd," as orga-
nizer Muriel Ullman called it,
made this year's Neighbors for
Neighbors cleanup the biggest in
the annual event's eight-year his-
tory. The first year attracted a
,
mere 200 participants, she said.
"I ran out of everything," said
Ullman, a city redevelopment
and housing manager. "This was
an incredible ainount of people."
The volunteers picked up lit-
ter, removed graffiti and hauled
away unwanted junk at Canyon
Park and in the neighborhood
near Wallace and Pomona
avenues. After three hours of
cleaning, they gathered in the
park for lunch donated by local
restaurants, live entertainment
and a speech by Mayor Peter,
Buffa.
Ullman attributed the record
crowds to the help of the Orange
County Association for the Edu-
cation of Young Children, which
provided games and face-paint-
ing at the park. It also helped to
be part of the Orange County. Vol-
unteer Center's Volunteer Con-
nection Day, which helped garner
extra publicity.
The event attracted lots of fam-
ilies, as well as social service
agencies and corporations.
Groups came out from Serving
People m Need and recovery cen-
ters, from Bank of America and
Target.
Their bigge.st task proved to be
getting rid of unwanted stuff -
sofas, broken appliances and the
like -from houses in the Wallace
and Pomona area, Ullman said.
"They were hauling away
dumpsters full of stuff," she said.

COOL!
Conclusive evidence that chloro-
Ouorocrubons (CFCs) significantly
contribute to the depletion of the
earth's ozone layer (which blocks
mo t of the sun's harmful ultraviolet
radiation) has led to cessation of
production of the refrigerant known
as CFC-12. This is the refrigerant
found in the air-conditioning sys-
tems of all but the more recent
model cars. While existing supplie~
of CFC-12 may be added to older
model -cars in the event of loss due
to leaks in the system, conversion to
a newer, safer refrigerant may make
belier long-term financial sense than
a repair. The EPA-accepted il!tema-
tive to CFC-12, known as R-1'34a, is
used in all new cars and may be
installed in older cars as part of n
modification of the existing system.
HINT:' As the remaining supply of
CFC-12 dwindles. the cost of the
product can be expected to climb.
THE MAITER OF
TIMING
"Pinging" is an abnormal fonn of
combustion that causes shock waves
in the engine's cylinders which
cause the characteristic "pinging"
sound. lf left uncorrected, pinging
can lead to the destruction of the
engine or, at least, a reduction in its
useful life. However, it is a mistake
to rush into retarding the factory-
specificd ignition timing to solve the
problem of pinging (on those cars in
which it is still possible to do so).
Whi~this strategy could work, it
coul,...also reduce power and fuel
economy, as weU as increase the
emission of engine pollutants.

further behind in his studies.
By the time he got to high

saw he was troubled, and tried
to help, allowing him to pass bis

the skills necessary for
coping with the complexities of
modem life, but A.J. Wu, a Chi-
nese im.qll.grant who has lived in
America since 1967, had another
endeavor in mind.
"She said she wanted to write
down her life story, but didn't
know how to write in English very
well," Wu's tutor, Betty Orbach,
said.
Orbacb. a former Newport Har-
bor High School English teacher,
is glad to help.
•It's become a nice, personal
relationship:· she said, adding
that Wu has taught her a lot about
Chinese culture.
· Orbach also has learned that
putting together a book is not
easy.
"When someone writes mem-

she said. "So you have to do a lot
of editing."

Although the program is not
geared toward teaching English
as a second language, those born
in other countries can get help if
they demonstrate a grasp of the
language, and Wu and Orbach
have been working together for
three years.
To help with that meticulous
task, Orbach enlisted the aid of
tutor and author Carol Hazel-
wood, one of the founders of the
literacy program. Hazelwood
helped structure the writing and
chose which episodes had the
most drama. Wu oversaw the edit-
ing, making sure Hazelwood did-
n't gloss over any important
details.

The manuscript is now with an
agent, but that does not mean the
writing partnership has ended.
The pair are currently working on

life in this country.
"I write something, then she

But sometimes those details

"With some of my memories, I

How important is it for parents
to encourage their children to
read?
Veiy -children of illiterate
parents are twice as likely to be
illiterate, and ~ven for those who
have parents who read, or who
are well-educated, they don't
learn to love books unless they're
introduced io them.
According to studies done by
the National Institute for Family
Uteracy, children who grow up
in an environment where books
are valued tend to become better
readers.
Last year the Newport Beach
Ubrary, realizing the importance
of taking this inter-generational

Together, they tackle the day-

helping new students, recruiting
and training new volunteer
tutors; and taking care of the 7 5
students and 70 tutors already
involved. They also help organize
-events and fund-raisers: .
They know what it takes to
make this 11-year-old, nonprofit
program run -much patience, a
lot of stamina, and above all,
compassion for those they're try-
ing to help, because being illiter-

unique stigma.

"I'll be here as long as it's

Daniel grew up in Burbank.

Costa Mesa resident Andrew
Kosicki claims to have had ulterior
motives for becoming a tutor in the
Literacy Program two years ago.
A frequent patron of the New-
port Beach Public Library, he took
a liking to the program's reading
room, but found he wasn't allowed
in.
"They said you can't do that,
unless you're a tutor, so I signed
up," Kosicki said.
Still, his main reasons for tutor-:
in!:) are more philanthropic.
"It's about returning something
to the community," he said.
Kosicki, 50, is a Polish native
whose family moved to Arkansas
three years after his birth. He
came to California 22 years later,
first settling in Torrance •. then
moving to the Newport-Mesa
area. When not tutoring, he works
for an electronics company.
Currently, he is working with
.two students.
"We let the student determine
what he or she needs," Kosicki
said, adding that one is getting
help formulating a good resume.-
But the students are not the
only ones getting something out of
it. Kosicki said the experience has
helped him as well.
"I speak more slowly, and more
clearly, ... he said. "I .thought I could
maybe hone some of my grammat-

The most important lesson for those training
to become tutors? Forget the rules
-I Thanks to oar sponsors
By Alessandra Ojurtdou, Daily Pilot
T he most inipoitant rule,
literacy program tutors
learn, is ignore the rules.
During their five-week
training~ession, they are ~old
to forget standard curricula of
dry textbooks and teaching
techniques, that any method is
acceptable as long it gets peo-
ple to read. .
"That's what's so fun about
it,• program coordinator Hallie
Strock said. ·vou really get to
use your creativity.•
When using this free-now
approach to learning, pio-
neered in the 1960s, tutors
focus on what the student
needs, be it help filling O\.l.t a
job application, reading a map
or just bemg able to enjoy a
good murder mystery.
And though this technique
may be frustrating for some
tutors, the constant need to
improvise seems to make them
better teachers.
While sitting in the Literacy
Program office, Strock and her
assistant, Donna Daniel, tell a
story of.one tutor who encoun-
tered a student particularly
reluctant to get down to busi-
ness.
•He'd had a fight with his
girlfriend, and just kept talk-
ing about her,• Str.ock said,
•
,.
addi.QQ that, while not discour-
aged from getting personal
with their tutors, students
have to realize they are there
to learn, not get free therapy.
"She kept trying to get him
to start the lessob, but he
wouldn't stop complaining,•
Daniel said.
Finally, in frustration, the
tutor got an idea. She asked
her student to dictate the inci-
dent to her, then had him read
it back, effectively turning his
_complaint session into a les-
son.
"When she told us· that, we
said 'yessslll"' Strock said,
stopping to recreate the
moment by giving Daniel a
high five.
Actually, what the tutor did
is quite commonly practiced in
the program. There's even a
name for it -the language
experience approach -and it
has been effective because
students are usually more
familiar with a text they have
just composed themselves.
And these kinds of teaching
tricks abound, showing that
there is some method to the
program's madness.
For instance, before start-
ing, students have to go
through.several steps.
First, there is an interview,
where the student's personal
information -age, education,
etc. -is written down. Then a
volunleer tests the student,
gauging his or her reading
ability. If the student is found
to meet the necessary require-
ments, he or she is assigned to
a tutor and they schedule a
meeting to get to know each
other.
If the stUdent has a particu-
lar g<>al in mind, the tutor tai-
lors a lesson plan around it. If
not, the two make a decision
together.
According to SCrock, few
students get turned away as
long as there is someone to
teach them. But sometimes
she is reluctant to take for-
eigners who can't demonstrate
the use of basic English. •
But most of the time, she
works around it.
"Our philosophy is, if some-
one comes in, they .have a
need," she said. "And we try
to accommodate that need."
However, she will not
accommodate tutors with
romantic notions about turn-
ing their students into biblio-
philes.
"A few tutors come in say-
ing, 'I really want to share my
19ve of reading,'" she said.
"But mos.t students who leave
here will never go out and
read a book. They're just here
to get the skills that will make
their lives better."

By Roger Carlson, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Aside from per-
haps his mom and dad, Ronnie and Don-
na McAda, and perhaps his.JJaticee (Lau-
ra Bartis) on the campus of the University
of Texas, it is difficult to imagine anyone
coming up with Mr. Irrelevant as Newport
Beach's Patµ Salata took to the podium
Sunday afternoon in New York City ..
Even the •self-appointed all-
knowing Mel Kiper, ESPN'~
supreme analyst touted to pos-
sess more insight than even the
coaches and owners of their
own teams themselves, w.as
caught completely flat-footed.
"Green Bay's pick is Ronnie
McAda, Army," said Salata, read-
ing from the Packers' slip in his hand.
Ronnie McAda? ·
For the uninformed (which is most
everyone), that's Mister McAda to you, sir,
a 6-foot-21/~, 200-pound senior quarter-
back who led Army to its first-ever 10-vic-
tory season (10-2) last season.
It's not a putdown on the Cadet ... he
had never heard of Irrelevant Week,
either, until contacted on the West Point
campus by Salata.' And as happy as Sala-
ta & Co. are of getting a player of
McAda's stature on, and off, the
field, the Mesquite, Texas High
product said he was just as
pleased with the honors, which
will be bestowed Mr. Irrelevant

"He didn't know about-us, but
he's very excited about coming," said
Salata, noting that the time span is almos,t
perfect in terms of McAda's commitments
with the Anny, as well as training camp
procedures with the Super Bowl Champi-
on Green Bay Packers.
"The only surprise for us was that
Green Bay drafted Ronnie in the seventh
round," said his mother, Donna, by tele-
phone. •He was already set to to to their

McAda, presenUy Fl Company Execu-
tive Commander, is to be commissioned
as a second lieutenant on May 31. .
Just how he fits within Green Bay's
thin.king is uncertain. As a Cadet with
Army, he guided the Black Knights of the ·
Hudson at quarterback within a wishbone
system. He'll get a better feel for it this
weekend at the Packers' mini-camp, a
three-daY"camp s~arting on Friday. .
What transpires after his weekend stint
is unclear. McAda has a five-year commit-

• Pulido caps basketball career
... for now after Newport Harbor

All-Stars' 103-92 upset with 12
points in less than 14 minutes.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -If
Danny Pulido said
goodbye to competi-
tive basketball for the
last time in Saturday
night's Orange County
High School All-Star
Game at Orange
Coast College, he did
so on glowing terms.
But even after col-
lecting 12 points, seven rebounds, two
assists, one steal and one blocked shot in
the South's 103-92 upset yictory .over the
North, the Newport Harbor High senior
left the door to a hardwood future slight-
ly ajar, as he begins preparing to con-
cen).rate on football at the University of
Oregon. .. ..
"Everyone keeps asking me abbut
Oregon basketball," the future Pac-10
tight end said with a smile, after playing
just 13:54 of the 40-rninute affair, con-
ne.cting on 4 of 6 from the field -includ-
ing both his three-point attempts -and
swishing both free-throw tries.
"I know (the Ducks' bQsketball team)
didn't do too well last year, but I don't
know ... Maybe in a couple years ... •
Many believe the 6-foot-5, 220-
pounder, who entered Newport Harbor
as a heralded freshman hoopstei:; and
promptly earned a starting spot on the
varsity,
might have earned his collegiate meal
ticket with basketball.
But, citing burnout, he sat out his
sophomore season, then missed all but
one game as a junior due to a shoulder
injury that required surgery.
Pulido averaged 13.5 points per game
en route to' first-team All-Sea View
League and All-Newport-Mesa District
honors as a senior, but his selection to
the South All-Stars 'raised more than a
few eyebrows.
"I was really happy (South Coach
Craig Falconer) put me on, because I
wasn't sure if I belonged," the 1996
Newport-Mesa District Football Player
of the Year explained. "But I just decid-
ed to work hard in practice and do the
best I could. I was happy with how
things worked out (Saturday)."
Falconer,' who coached Pulido on the
Orange County Rebels youth basketball
team fqr three seasons leading up to
high school, said Pulido lived up to his
billing as the surprise of the week-long
South practice sessions.
u Danny played great," said Falconer,
a former Costa Mesa High all-star, who
represented the South in the 1966 coun-
ty showcase. #He only played a few min;
utes in the second half, because I told
him I needed to get some other kids in
there. He was really good about it. If
he'd have played a whole game, he'd
have scored 20 points."
Newport Harbor Coach Larry Hirst
was equally 4n.pressed.
· "He did all the things tonight he did
for me this season," Hirst said. uHe shot
the three, he rebounded, and he got to
the foul line. When you think about it,
he's only really played basketball about
10 or 12 months of his high school career,
but he's still one of the top players in the
county. That's pretty amazing. It's also a
credit to his work ethic.
u A few of the people I was sitting with
said they were disappointed he was
playin§ football instead of basketball at
Oregon."
Barring a change of plan in Eugene,
however, Pulido, who caught a school-
record 140 passes in his three-year varsi-
ty receiving career, will be running up
the seam of opposing secondaries,
instead of ruri.ning the wing on the fast
break.
"It was a real good feeling to win,''
said Pulido, whose gridiron care.er also
included two trips to CIF Southern Sec-
tion championship games. a 14-0 title
campaign in 1994, and All-CIF Division
V laurels last fall. · "J told (Falconer) I kind of ended my
basketball career the way I started it,
from playing for him back in the sixth
grade to playing for him again tonight. If
basketball has to come to an end, this
was a good way to end it."

Erickson captures title(s)
• OCC star wins singles; teams with Gilliam in doubles.
COSTA ?vlESA -Cami Erick.son could not be stopped. She really
couldn't. The top singles player for Orange Coast College's women's
tennis team looked like she had no brakes in a performance that
earned her the Orange Empire Conference title.
Saturday, Erickson claimed the crown by whipping Saddleback
College's Gabi Rios 6-3, 6-2 in the OEC championship final.
Erickson wrapped up the season with a perfect conference clip of
12-0. Her overall record was 13-3.
As if one title weren't enough, Erick.son teamed with Whitney
GUliam and the tandem reeled in another championship for Janice
Moran's Pirate squad.
· Erickson and Gilliam defeated Gloden West's Judy Durr and Penny
Jones for the doubles banner, 6-3, 6-4.
Erickson and Gilliam, who constitute Orange Coast's number one
doubles team, battled to an 11-1 conference mark on the season.
