NEWPORT-MESA -A higher percentage
of Newport-Mesa students complete high
school, take college preparation and college-
level courses and attend California communi-
ty colleges than their counte rparts statewide,
according to a report by the California Depart-
ment of Education released this week.
The same report, however, shows varied
results between the district's four comprehen-
sive high sChools.
"I'm real pleased that we're above average
in most academic· areas," said school trustef7.
Martha Fluor. "No matter which high school a
student attends in our district, they will get a
very rigorous education to prepare them for
the future."
Across the state, 34.8% of students took
college preparatory courses in the 1994-95
school year and 12.3% passed tests for col-
lege-level Advanced Placement courses in
1995-96 compared with 42.2% and 23.2%
respectively in Newport-Mesa.
"The overall statistics are' very encourag-
ing," said Superintendent Mac Bernd .. "We
want to keep building' on our success.•
At Corona del Mar High, more students
passed AP tests (45%), completed high school
(97 .3 % ) and took college bound classes
(65.7%) than at the other clisttict schools.
Corona del Mar High Principal Don Martin
atttibuted much of the school's success to the
student body.
"We're fortunate to have ... kids that are
pretty much bOund for college,• Martin said.
Less than 3% of Corona del Mar students
were limited English proficient, eligible for
free or reduced meals or received Aid for
Families with Dependent Children.
Across the clisttict, 26.2% of students qual-

B ob and Beverly Lewis got a
new granddaughter the
day of last year's Kentucky
De.rby -but they hope
this year's race itself will
give them something to celebrate.
The Newport Beach couple is send-
ing Silver Charm, one of the 40 horses
they own, to the lauded 1.25-mile "run
for the roses" May 3. And given the
horse's name and the charmed life
they've lived far 50 years together, luck
will likely be on their side at Churchill
Downs.
"We've been extremely fortunate,"
Bob said, noting that his horses have
won more than 40 •graded" races.
Only graded races can lead to quali-
fication for the 127-year-old Kentucky
Derby, held in Louisville, Ky., at
Churchill Downs. The race, along with
the Preakness and Belmont Stakes,
forms the coveted "Triple Crown,•
which very few horses ever win.

More · than 3,600 people lost
the power in their homes
throughout a circle of Newport
Beach neighborhoods early Tues-
day morning after an electrical
line broke loose and fell on top of

An Irvine man died early Tues-

tearing it from its foundation, said
California Highway Patrol inves-

Sharma landed about 20 feet

nearby lanes for nearly four hours.
The cause of the crash remains

Tars ·swe0p; face .EagleS ·next in league showdown
•Newport Harbor's boys
volleyball team pushes
Woodbridge around.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -There are moments
on_ the hardwood when Newport
Harbor High's boys volleyball
team looks as tough as anybodY.
in Orange County, like in the sec-
ond game Tuesday night against
host Woodbridge,
Coach Dan Glenn's Sailors,
who realize the big taik is still
ahead of them, swept the feisty
Waniors, 15-12, 15-6, 17-15, in a
Sea View League match, using
mos~y reserves in the third game.
'· ..
Newport Harbor (7-4, 4-1 in
league), ranked fifth in the coun-
ty, missed no serves and made
only one passing error in the sec-
ond game, a Sailor trait, as
Glenn's Tars dominated.
''Yeah, but you know wb,at?"
Glenn said, "we still need to play
our best match oi the year on 'Fri-
day against Santa Margarita (at
home) if we're going to have any
chance at it."
The chance Olenn is referring
to, of course, j is winning the
league championship. Santa Mar-
garita swept Newport Harbor in
the first meeting, inducting a 15-0
victory in the third game.
"You lose 15-0 when all the
breaks go against you, and (the
Eagles) just got on a roll,• Glenn
said. "fi bappens. But it shouldn't.
We need to play the way we did
the other night against Corona,
when we came back and played
with a lot of desire in our heart.•
The Sailors responded from an
0-2 deficit to win in five, then
waxed Woodbridge ('t-9, 0-5) to
set up Friday's Sea View I:.eague
showdo-wn against the Eagles.
Statistically, no one recorded
~ or digs in double digits for
the Sailors, but collectively they
served seven aces. Senior Dana
Mesenbrink (eight kills), sopho-
mores Adam Hearlson (seven)
and Matt Jameson (five), and
junior Scott Archbold (five) led
the Tars in hitting. Junior setter
'li'avis Nelson was everywhere.
Archbold recorded all of his
kills in · the third game, while
sophomore Alan Limon and
junior John,Stout, both reserves,
combined for four kills, two
blocks and an· ace in the third.
The Sailors started slowly as
the Warriors built leads of 7-4 and
8-5 in the· first game. Hearlson
ignited the comeback with two
kills, then Mesenbrink's ace
pulled the:. Tars to within 8-7,
Following a sideout, two
unforced passing on Woodbridge
gave the Sailors a lead, then a
Jameson kill and a net violation
on the hosts made it 11 -8, before
the Warriors pulled to within 13-
12. Mesenbrink's kill put the Tars
high school baseball
ahead by two, then Woodbridge's
Jared Dannis whacked one long.
Woodbridge had a 5-3 lead in
the sec"nd game after scoring
five straight points, forcing Glenn
to call timeout, after which the
Tars were never be~er, outscoring
the Warriors, 12-1.
Nelson served the second
game's last four -points, including
a pair of aces. To get the Tars a
sideout, Nelson dumped one for a
kill. He also. assisted dwing the
run on Mesenbrink's scoring kill
at 13-6.
Newport Harbor's lead in the
third game was 12-6, after Scott
Dore, Ty 'li'amblie and Rick
Robinson stepped up and con-
tributed around the net.'

COSTA MESA -Can a loss be
a good thing? ·
For Doug Oeats, coach of the
Costa Mesa High baseball
squad, last Friday's 6-3 loss at
Aliso Niguel may have been a
blessing.
"Friday at Aliso, we played
hard, as well as we've played all

despite what the scoreboard
said, was still with Costa Mesa
Tuesday when the Mustangs

"(Richardson) was.having a little trouble

The Pirates rallied behind the booming
crowd of about 100 fans and a Fernando

kept the contest going.
"When the third game was over, I said,
'Wasn't that fun?' That's what volleyball ts all

Cammarata opened the fourth game with

those points. '
BUt Pierce was nowhere from gone. The

pangs of fear rippling through the Pierce six,

Estancia increased student

Anatol said. "I'm glad we show
an increase.•
Although the scliool has
worked to retain students by
having Spanish-language par-
ent nights and training for
teaching staff to address lan-
guage barriers, many students
drop out because they have to
work, Anatol said.
Estancia has the highest per-

The Lewises have had their
share of hors~s in prestigious
races -they even had two run in
the derby a few years back,
though they haven't won yet.
Their Lido Isle home boasts evi-

of their prized horses hanging in
the hallway and above the man-

They keep horses at Santa
Anita Race 'Tfack in Arcadia, at

from another, but Beverly can
recognize a few by looking at
their faces .
Their best-known horse, Sere-

the first mile, then fell back. She's
earned $3.3 million in purse mon-

win the Jim Beam Stakes at Tu.r-

This year, their deep gray thor-

prestigious Kentucky event, open

Costa Mesa High School had
the sm&lest number of students
passing AP tests at 14.7%, but
had the highest number attend-
mg Cahfornia comrnuruty col-
leges.
Prinopal Andrew Hernan-
dez attributed bdth figures to
the number of Costa Mesa stu-
c:HIDts attending Orange Coast
College classes across the street
from the school.
Hernandez said the school
has relied on OCC to provide
students with the same kind of
college work they would study
in AP classes and that probably
the same percentage of Costa
Mesa students are receiving
college credit as students at the
other high schools. .
"The neat thing about OCC
is that the student is getting
cfue<:t credit there," he said.
Newport Harbor• High's
numeers closely lined up with
the district's figures, but the
school did have the smallest
number of students enrolled in
career-vocational ~ducation
classes at 30.7%. District-wide
enrollment was 38%.
Trustee Dana Black said she
would like to see students at all
the high schools held to tugher
standards and to have more
class options, both in vocational
and Advanced Placement class-
es. ,
"We have to make sure. we
have more choices for the stu-
dents academically," Black
said. "Not d.ll the students know
they have a choice. It's all a
form of expectations."
ton Beach resident Bob .Baffert,
wants nothing but a win for Silver
Charm -especially after one of
his horses placed a close second
last year.
"I'm back with a vengE:ance,"
Baffert said on a cellular phone
from Kentucky. ·1 trunk we have
the best horse and the best own-
ers. The horse likes it here, and I
have very good vibes."
The Lewises said they, too, are
cheering for nothing short of first
place for Silver Chann -though
they know, of course, wnat an
honor it is just to qualify.
"This is a tremendous mdica-
tion of fortune and good luck,"
Bob said. "It's only a one-time
experience for a horse. It's the
culminating acruevement, dream
and fantasy of everybody who
has ever been assooated with
horses."
