COSTA MESA -A team of

today in the hope that d
$25,000 reward approved by
the City Council on Monday
will help them find the person

girl.
Balbuena was shot in the
chest May 29 after bullets were
fired through the door of the
garage where she and her tam-
ily were liVing. Her baby was
delivered prematurely by cae-
sarean section but died shortly
after.
Police believe the double-
honuade in the 2000 block of
Wallace Avenue was gang-
related, said Lt. Ron Smith.
"Very often, gang members
share information,• Smith said.
"They brag about it. They talk
about it."

COSTA l'v1ESA -Maybe it won't occur
to them Thursday or Friday -as they sit
there slowed by a lane closure for con·
struction on Newport Boulevard -to toast
the wait. But when the job is completed in
the fall, they'll surely be able to toast this
week's slowdown -if they want.
MILLEN NIUM MOMENT
That's because the closure will allow the
installation of steel remforcements that will
bear the weight of a massive bar at a new
Thangle Square restaurant.
Owners of the Yard House, which is
scheduled to open in October, claim they
have the more beers on tap than any other
restaurant anywhere.
A southbound lane will be shut down to
traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both
days as crews lift and ass~mble girders that
weigh more than a ton each.
Planners said they don't expect any
major inconveniences to motorists or cus-
tomers during the construction.

Drivers are advised to use other routes

The 60 pieces of steel reinforcement
delivered to the site are designed for both

THEN •••
The year was 1995.
The Irvine Company's plan to
build 119 single-family homes on
26 acres of the historic Castaways
was in the works. Regarded as
one of the most historic parts of
Newport Beach, the Castaways is
the jagged bluff area snuggled
between East Coast Highway and
Westcliff Drive. At the time, it was
owned by the Irvine Co.
Although the Irvine Co. was
preparing to bl,lild, they were also
required to dedicate a park to the
city of Newport Beach .
The City Council and the
Irvine Co. approved a 4.8-acre
park at Dover Drive and 16th
Street -just above what is
known as Upper Castaways. But
some people thought that Lower
Castaways, which is right next to
East Coast Highway, would be a
more scenic spot for a park.
So the city and the Irvine Co.
attempted to make a deal: Plan B,
The city would trade its 4.8-acre
park site at Dover and 16th for
Lower Castaways. A feasibility
study approved by the city's
Parks, Beaches and Recreation
Commission was considered by
the Qty Council.
The study placed the active
park -with obe soccer field and
'two Little League ·fields -into
Upper Castaways, an open space
consisting of natural habitat and
wildlife. Lower Castaways -with
its' scrumptious view of the ocean
-would house a dog park, a bas-
ke tball court, a practice field and
parking spaces.
In return, the Irvine Co. would
be able to build up to 29 addition-
al homes at the original park site,
which is adjacent to the compa-
ny's Castaways housing develop-

But it wasn't long before the
public got word of the situation
and began to protest. They did
not want Plan B. ln fact, some did
not want the park at all. They
wanted to keep the 4.8 acres of
pre-approved park as open space.
So Plan B was scrapped and it
was back to Plan A. Things would
have been fine except for a 20-to
40-space parking lot in Upper
Castaways oatwal habitat miss-
ing from the original blueprints.
It was back to council sessions

but a tiny piece of wall or ceiling

to be attracted by. They were
about an inch long, fat and furry.
There was nothing in the
paper about this pestilential
invasion for a couple of days.
Then I learned the things are
called miller moths. They had
come to Fort Collins from the
prairies of eastern Colorado and
Kansas.
The killer millers were mak-
ing a sort of pit stop to build up
strength and numbers before
continuing on to the high coun-
try. According to a professor of
biology at the university, they
are harmless to both humans
and to our Pendleton shirts and
other woolly items.
"They'll hang arourid for a
couple of weeks and they'll be
gone,• the professor was quoted
as saying. There was nothing we
could do about these things:
They eat Raid soup for break-
fast. We would simply have to
learn to live with them.
I tried several copious squirts
of byg spray and the professor
was quite right. The stuff star-
tled them and ·probably tasted
terrible, but it didn't really faze
them.
I tried to call the professor to
find out what kind of weaponry I
could assemble that might make
the moths want to leave our
house in a hurry.
Guess what? •I'm sorry, he's

Great. The town's infested
with moths and the entomologist
bugs out.
My wife heard that you can
put a little Dove soap and waler
together and it will attract them
aJld they will drown. I put a
roasting pan full of the mixture
outside the front door that night.
The next monung, the pan con-
tained 27 moth corpses.
Of course, that left about
2,700 of the thmgs clinging to
the walls and ceilings of our
house. At least 200 more had
soµght shelter under the tarpau-
lin covenng the little sailboat we
keep over by our lake. Then
there were the hundreds of /
moths that flew out when I
flipped over the upside down
hull of my kayak, the colonies in
and under our cars, beneath the
snow blower, .inside gutter
drains, under our redwood deck
-everywhere.
As the days fluttered by, the
moths began to disappear.
Maybe 10 million survivors con-
tinued the migration lo enjoy
springtime in the Rockies. Sever-
al million others croaked, the vic-
tims either of natural moth caus-
es, soapy water or being
whdcked by residents who sun-
ply couldn't take any more of the
damn things flying in their races.
We are told the disgusting
plague will be over any day
now, with no real harm done to
anybody. Then it will be time for
the ubiquitous cottonwood trees
to begin filling the air with the
diaphanous carriers that float
their seeds to greener pastures.
Do you suppose the guy who
WTote the book that just last
month rated Fort Collins the No.

• Almost a half century of ~
volunteer work has kept
Kay Johnson in touch with
her Balboa neighbors.

BALBOA -lf there is power in
giving, Kay Johnson has to be one
of the most powerful women in
the world.
The Balboa Island resident,
who was recently presented the
Chamber of Commerce's Silver
Anchor Award, has given more
than 10,000 hours and a countless
number of years to the Hoag Hos-
pital Auxiliary and the Assistance
League of Newport-Mesa.
Each year, the chamber pre-
sents the anchor awards to the
community's most dedicated vol-
unteers. With her yea.rs of work.
Johnson could have won a whole
boatload of them. ,.
Volunteering is such a great
way to spend your time, and it
PLUG
IN f
also helps you to keep up with
what's going on (m your commu-
nity)," Johnson said.
Johnson has known what's
happening on the island for most
of the second half of the century. A
resident of the island for nearly 50
yearS, Johnson, who's well into
her 90s by her own count, has
been a member or the Assistance
League of Newport-Mesa for 46
years. She began volunteering
with the Red Cross in 1948, help-
ing veterans.
"We'd take the veterans from
the hospital in Long Beach on
trips to the ballgame and help
them do other things,• she said.
•After my husband died 3 1
years ago, I volunteered more and
it helped to pass the tune,• she
said.
Johnson spends her Monday
mornings at the Assistance
League tluift shop where, her
friends said, customers drop in
just to check in with her.
"She's 90-plus years old and
has volunteered forever," said
Charyl Butterworth, the finanaal
adVlSor for the Assistance League
"She works the register al the
store and never misses a beat.
People come in just to say hello to
her."
Betty Storch, who presented
Johnson with the Silver Anchor,
among others, said the generous
volunteer reminds her of the Ener-
gizer Bunny.
•Someone called her a human
dynamo. She's such a hard work-
er and very generous,• Storch
said.
Johnson sets an amazing
exd.IDple for other volunteers, But-
teiworth said. ·
#She's an incredible lady,• But-
teiworth added. "She's gone on
and on forever, and she's a true
inspiration.•
But not one who likes attention.
"l really don't like the public-
ly," Johnson said. "I appreciate
the award and the coverage, but I
don't like the attention. I just like
to help people.•

affected the result. North's lhtee·club

would be a simple contnct 10 fulfill .
But it was defeated one tnck, and
South could do noth.tng 10 counter
West's excellent defense.
Everyone followed to lMe first two
rounds of clubs and, since a ruff-and-
sluff could not possibly benefit
declarer. West conunued with a low
club at tnck three. East ruffed with
the six and declater overruffed wath

ten of 1tumps became the senmg

Tivoli Too! a picturesque setting in Laguqa
ou say you don't need much for your big day -just some balmy weather, a gentle sea breeze or two, and
large open plaza resplendent with bougainvillea, climbing roses and terra cotta dripping with colorfq}
blooms. , ' ·
Oh, and.c}lOu would lilc.e to have a picruresque spot for the ceremony with a chinning hacienda }ust in case u
decide to do some ccJebrating indoors. We have the perfect place fot you: Tivoli'Too! Located just up the tr et
from its sister site, the Tivoli Terrace, this f-acility is definitely coming into its own. ,.
In met, many of you are already familiar with the site thanks to the Art-A-Fair, an annual open-air art exhibit licld
in the front section oflivoli Too's plaza in July and August. E<Yents held here during these months benefit from the
festive and exciting presence of the artists and their worlc. Throughout the rest of the year, however, the entire pJ.iza
is available for special events, giving you complete freedom to use the area as you wish.
As you walk across the concrete and flagstone plaza, you realize what a terrific space this is for enteltlining -
especially if you're planning a large event. A gazebo covered witl;l flowering vines, make$ a lovely centerpiece and.I~
often used to showcase the wedding cake. Throughout the plaza, you'll find casual seating areas: benches ~d potted
flowers placed around trees and old-fushioned globe street lamps. You can set up rabies with umbrellas for an ...
alfresco reception, or tent the area during cooler weather.
Ceremonies arc held in a tranquil comer of the plaza, at the base of a flowering hillside. The bride makes her
entrance from her own mini-hacienda, a lovely, "nerve-calming" space filled with antiques, pots of flowers and local
art. She and the groom stand beneath a bronze g:azebo entwined with morning glories and bougainvillea. A weepiJJg
willow and a waterfall flowing into a lily pond create a pretty backdrop.
If you are having a winter wedding, get married by the warmth of a craclc.ling fire in the adjacent hacienda. The
Sanm Fe-style firepJace, along with Mexican pavers, Navajo-white walls and windows all aro~d give this space a
distinctly southwestern ambiance. You can also have your reception in here, or invite your guests out onto the
veranda for an open-air repast. And don't worry about the chilly weather-the veranda is easily enclosed with
removable French doors.

' fter being assigned the task of developing a special
publication on the wedding industty, I rediscovered a
company that for some reason I had Jost track of over the
yi!ars. What a pleasure it was to discover one of my aJl-t:ime favorite
flOraJ and gift companies has opened a showroom in Costa Mesa. I
remember shopping in their first store located in Fashion Island ano
again in the late 1980s when it moved to South Coast Plaza. It was
'lllways a great place to find the perfect gift or flower arrangement for
that special someone. The floral arrangements were always ·
spectacular and the gifts.both rare and unusual.
At their new showroom located at 2990 Redhill Ave. in Costa
Mesa, I was thrilled to find the full-service wedding florist I
remembered, together with a growing selection of outstanding
ioterior solutions and gift ideas. They have also expanded their
offerings co include some of the finest gift basket creations I have
evtr seen.
