Barrel blaze spreads
to Balboa Island house
A homeowner who tossed a
smoldenng match into a garbage
barrel may have caused a hre on
Balboa Island on Thursday morn-
ing. No one was injured.
The blaze quickly engulfed
the side of the house in the 100
block of Collins Avenue.
The fire erupted after the
homeowner reportedly lit a gas
barbecue in the backyard and
disposed of the match in an old
barrel. Authorities said the barrel
contained some garbage and dry
leaves which caught fire from the
discarded match. The flames shot
up the side of the house mto an
upstairs room through an open
window.
Meanwhile, Manuel Burgdfdt,
who lives nearby, noticed smoke
and flames coming from the back
of the home. Along with other
witnesses, Burgardt grabbed a
garden hose and began dousmg
the names with water as fire-
fighters amved. Ten firefighters
extinguished the blaze within 15
minutes.
Authorities estimate there was
$25,000 damage to the structure
and the home's contents.

The small aircraft that carried

the three skydlvers bailed. out of
the plane attempting to hit their

The f~l two parachutists land-

Sa pqlice officers, 11 firefight-

Whether Newport Beach will send

The daredevil plunge may

But because he has a police

not so hesitanl On Tuesday, the

announced it would be the fust to
put money in the pool again. The
dties of Tustin and San aemente
have also expressed interest in
investing.
Before the county's 1994 bank-

other public agencies bad placed
well over $1 billion in the pool, only
to see it collapse after a series of
risky investments.
The city of Costa Mesa had
about $3 million invested. That
money is gradually being paid
back through county lawsuits
against investment groups. All liti·

was completed last week.
Roeder said the city would wait
until the funds are paid back some·

It miaht seem that. if the defenders
hold two cashing aces against a slam,
they should have no difficulty col-

sun lead ask.s for partner to shift to
the higher of the two relevant suns (in
this case the minors), and a low can!
asks for the lower. An indeterminate
card leaves the decision up to the
leader.
