But Hatleberg says
she couldn't feed the
hundreds of needy and homeless people
who walk through her doorway without
the numerous volunteers who cook and
serve the food five days a week.
However, recently, many of those vol ...

force.
. "I need volunteers very bad," said
Hatleberg, who cah always be found at
the soup kitchen's entrance, greeting the
200 or so people who eat there each day.
Alma de la Torre, 76, of Costa Me5a,
serves hundreds of bowls of soup every
day from a 50-gallon pot including veg-

day.
De la Torre, who began volunteering

guests are not limited to the poor -she
has served soup to former lawyers and
teachers who have fallen on bard times.

NEWPORT BEACH -As the
City Council took yet another step
toward plans to revitalize the Bal-
boa Peninsula, it chucked a few of
the touchier ideas in the sweeping
proposal:
Median parking won't be ta.ken
away, and traffic to Udo Isle won't
be rerouted onto 32nd Street from
Via Udo.
A committee of residents and
business people drafted a plan to
beautify the peninsula and fiist
presented it to the council in Janu-
ary. Since then, the city bas been
hammering out concrete steps to
implement some of its suggestions
and eliminate others.
The council Monday discussed
financial and public outreach
plans, taking the following actions:
• Embarking upon a public out-
reach program. •
• Spending. $125,000 of off-
street parking funds to draft a
parking management plan and
eliminating the suggestion to take
away median parking.

Giant of the newsroom InoVes on
I 'm sad this week.
That's because my team-
mate, my partner in crime,
my comrade and cohort, Iris
Yokoi, is leaving.
For those of you who don't
know Ilis, she's one of the finest
journalists tO\ ever grace the
pages of the Daily Pilot.
She stands a mere 4 'foot 10
inches tall. But I tell you what,
anyone who meets Iris knows
she's got a Shaquille O'Neal-
size measure of personality,
vitality and charm.
When I met Iris seven years
ago, I was a know-nothing
intern ~d she, all of 25 years
old, was already a seasoned
professional. She seem1td to
have a grip on community jour-
nalism that I was sure I'd never
be able to equal.
And still haven't.
Let me tell you about one
early afternoon in the Daily Pilot
newsroom. Iris was the Newport
Beach reporter at the time.
As the intern, I was busy
rewriting press releases for the
calendar. Pretty mind-numbing
stuff. It's what interns do,
Then, a call came in from the
police.
"Got a barricaded suspect,"
Iris said to then-City Editor
Steve Marble as she collected
her note pad, pen and car keys
. and headed toward -Ole door.
' "Wait," Steve said, stopping
Iris in her tracks and pointing ,
over in my d,irection. "Would
you mind if Tony over there

me? Never even met the joker,•
"Hey look honey, some guy
named Fred's leaving. And he's
thanking me for being his
friend. Just one question. Who
the hell is Fred?"
At the Times, Iris was part of
the inaugural team that put
tony
dodero
I gave Iris a pleading look.
"Sure," she said, probably
more out of pity than anything
els~.
It didn't matter to me. All I
knew was that instead of writ-
ing about an upcoming book
sale, rwas speeding toward
Lido Isle in the red Honda of
one of the Pilot's star reporters.
Th.is was big-tin).e stuff.
I wasn't disappointed. The
story turned eut to be huge.
Patricia Kastle, a member of the
Kastle ski manufacturing family
of Austria, and the owner of a
boutique called La Patou, had
been shot dead in front of her
Lido Isle mobile home. Her hus-
band, Lee, had pumped a cou-
·pte of pistol rounds into her and
then retreated to the mobile
. home where he ultimately took
his own life.
It was.,& dramatic scene and
hard fo, a mhe intern to fath-
together an edition that circu-
lated in South-Central Los
Angeles. The embers of the
riots were still aglow in every-
one's memories and·the paper
was seen as a long-overdue
overture to a community that
had gone withouJ for too long.
Later, she was offered a posi-
tion at the Chicago Tribune.
She was also offered a job at
the Honolulu Bulletin. Even
though the odds were stacked
om. But Iris quickly put me to
work anyway.
I interviewed an emotional
man who witnessed Patricia
Kastle's slaying. I tracked down
a clerk· at her store, and broke
the new$ to him that his boss
was dead. •
The rest of the time I just
watched in awe as Iris inter-
viewed cops and witnesses.
By the end of the day, I hand·.
ed over my notes to Iris and
sauntered off back to college to
go boast of my adventures to
my sure-to-be jealous school
mates. · ·
Next day came the payoff.
The killing was the top story of
the day with big photos .
splashed across the Daily Pilot's
front page. And at the end of
the main story a small little line
about how I had contributed to
the whole thing.
It was one of my proudest
moments.
My almost karmic link to Iris
deesn't stop there, though.
When Iris was hired to work for
the Los Angeles Times, I was no
longer an intern and was
named as her replacement as
the Newport Beach reporter.
Big shoes to fill. Well, not
really-Iris wea.rS size 2, in lit-
tle boys' no less. But living up to
her reputation, now that's a
tough job.
I mean here's a woman who,
when she announced she was
leaving, had a proclamation
issued in her honor by the city.
I tried my best, and when my
against qie, I Went ahead and
called her one day, asking if she
just as soon junk those high-fly·
ing offers and come back to
work with me as the Daily
Pilot's city editor. She said yeah,
sure.
Boy, dp I live right or what?
So, all in all, it's not the
shock of the year that anothe r
newspaper would lure Iris
away. I suppose I'm just lucky
that it hasn't happened before

editors bad enough, they gave me another job and spared the
readers from further pa.in.
It wasn't long after that Iris
returned to the Pilot, this time
as dty editor, and some time lat-
er I became news editor and we
were teamed together -again.
It's been nothing but g.ood •
fortune for me.
Once again, Iris has been a
great teacher and mentor. I
learn from her constantly and
rely on her a lot. I have
immense respect not only for
her abilities as a newswoman,
but for her uncanny knack to
know what's going on ,every-
where, at all times. She com-
mands a news staff that entails
two newspapers. and four cities
and she_ seems to be intimately
familiar with all of them.
It's mind-boggling, really.
Alas, that time is coming to a
·close. My friend and colleague
is going off to bigger ventures.
And once again I have her to
thank. Her departure prompted
my editors to give me a promo-
tion. Not sure if thaf was a great
trade-off.
Still, the idea of losing Iris
strikes me as terrifying. And
while I'm very happy for her
and I know her replacement is
immensely capable, I can't help
but note that an era is ending at
the Pilot. <
I'm just glad I was here to
share it with Iris.

Her energy is infectious. Her

and 9-8, but the Sea Kings came
back behind Alshuler, whose kill
gave them a sideout and subse·

from Beaucharnp's set gave CdM
a 10-9 edge.
Andrews had three kills
toward the end of the second
game. CdM had four chances at
game point before putting it away.
In the decisive game, the Sea
Kings led 9-0 and 13-3, the latter
following Bums' service ace. But
that lack of "going for the jugu-

COSTA MESA -To say that
lhe scorecard dunng Tuesday's
Pacific Coast League game in
Costa Mesa was a mess would
be an understatement. The Uni-
versity High baseball team put
15 boys in the batting lineup.
The Costa Mesa Mustangs
changed defensive lineups 11
times.
As a result the scorecard was
a nightmare, and could only be
compared to the horror scene
that the Mustangs faced each
time the Ttojans came to bat.
University (14-7, 7-3) pound-
ed out 13 hits off four Mustang
pitchers, and were assisted with
seven free passes and three
errors in a 12-4 win.
"We have to play them and
need to step up. They're a good
hitting team. They're a good
team,• Mustangs Coach Doug
Deats said.
Costa Mesa, which is 7-12
and 2-8, actually got on the
board before University. Ryan
Gallacher led off the second
with a walk and stole second.
He moved to third on Jeremy
Gordon's single. Kris Desandro,
who was making his varsity
debut, ripped a single into the
right-center gap to score Gal-
lacher.
Desandro would later add a
stolen base and a run scored to
his first-game statistics.
But that rally seemed minor
compared to the explosion the
Ttojans staged in the top of the
third. The first four batters got
hits and scored, and it was
almost all University from that
point.
The Ttojans' University of
Notre Dame-bound senior
Randy Lukasiewicz smashed
three hits, picked up two RBI
and scored three times while
adding a sacrifice bunt. Eli
Stokols reached base four of five
times at the plate and tallied
three RBI. The league's leading
power hitter, Garrett Atkins ( 10
home runs, 26 RBI) reached
base five times with two singles,
two walks and an error.
Deats, who said he was
impressed with his squad's
offensive execution by which
the Mustangs gathered eight
hits, said that the loss of some
key players is hurting his squ ad.
Disciplinary actioo and academ -
ic ineligibility took three players
out of the lineup Tuesday.
"It makes1us a weaker team,·
Deats said.
Along with Desandro's hero-
ics, Al Lambert proved to be one
of the shining points for Costa
Mesa, though. Lambert drilled a
two-run triple in the fourth.
Costa Mesa's catcher Julius
Vasquez went 2 for 3 with a sin-
gle, double and an RBI, as well.
The Mustangs face the lum-
bering Ttojans again Friday at
3:15 p.fu. at University.
