U.S. poloists behind, before it even begins - •Water polo exhibition shows some shortcomings on U.S. team. By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot -CORONA DEL MAR ·-The sun was setting on Team USA's first day in the pool against international competition since the Olympics, and Coach John Vargas wasn't smiling. The Onited States' national water polo team had just fallen to Croatia 10·7 in an exhibition match Saturday evening at the Marian Bergeson Aquati~ Centeruat Coro- na del Mar High School in preparation for this week's Newport International Water Polo Tournament. "We did a good job the first two quar- ters, but we were getting tired and weren't attacking like we should have," he said with a scowl. "Some of th~ guys were tired and that was attributed to two things: that some of the guys were fatigued', and just that it's the first game," he said. . Team USA has been split up since i~ seventh-place finish in the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. The team has been shaken up and. switched around, too. Vargas hasn't finished his first year as .head coach of the program. Three of his stars have been playing professionally in Europe and weren't suited up at Satur- day's exhibition. The team has only been practicing as a unit on a consistent basis for less than a month. · The squad is just beginning to gel. "I was pleased with that. We've been working hard on attacking aS" a team, both offensively and defensively,'< Vargas said. "We don't want just one standout. We want a team attack." ----------- In the first two periods against the world's silver·medalist team, Team USA was b~ttling as a team. San Clemente native Jeremy Laster hit the Americans' first goal while the defense, paced by goalkeeper Chris Duplanty held the Croatians to one, ~s well. Vargas' unit pulled ahead in the sec- ond period and led by two goals midway through. But the strong Croatian team ral· lied back and took a 5-4 lead into the third. But Chris Ceding, a Corona del Mar High product, whipped in a goal to tie the score to begin the period. Then the fatigue set in, and Croatia didn't seem to be fazed. "They're strong. That's a typical Euro- pean team," Vargas said. "They haven't taken the time off that we have ·and they're at garne_.speed ri~ht now. We're not." Croatia's Ognjen Knie nailed in three goals as the visitors pulled ahead for the 10-7 win. Chi Kredell (Seal Beach), Laster and· Oeding each chipped in with two goals; and Kyle Kopp of San Bernardino hit one. Duplanty, who resides in Corona del Mat . swatted away-eight Croatian shots on g<;>al. . • "(Croatia) is just running on all cylin- ders and we aren't there, yet," Vargas said. But then the coach smiled as he thought· about the opportunity to get primed for more international competition in his own backyard. Vargas, who lives in Newport Beach and coaches the Sea Kings' water polo tea.IDs, as well, is excit- ed for this week's event. "We'll have tons of support. I'm really looking forward to it," he said. But a seven-run Cougar inning dashed that hope and resulted.in a 9-4 win for Azusa. The win gives the Cougars, who earned second place in the Golden State Athletic Cbnfer- .ence, the home field advantage for next week's tournament, which will feature SCC, Hawaii Pacific and either Biola, Point Loma Nazarene or Westmont.
