Mary Lou Williams and

cut down on their store space
and open the back rooms up
for the center after public
demand for such a facility
became 'great.
. •we had been wanting to

asking for it,• Funk said. "It
was almost like 'Field or

will come -and after we built

coming," Funk said.
With the addition, the store,
which first opened in 1982, is
living up to its name.
•we are evol~g always,"
Williams said, •so we are the
latest thing." Funk adds to her
mother's sentiment: "Well, at
least we try to stay one step
ahead of things."
The June 19 grand opening
of the center was attended by
nearly 500 people, Williams
said, and since that time, the
center has experienced a suc-
cessful first three weeks with
attendance at classes growing
by the day. ·
"We want to be of service<o
the community and we have a
very impressive staff on board
to accomplish that." Williams

that their store and the center
can be beneficial to people of
all backgrounds, faiths and

"Everyone can benefit from
because everyone is working
on some sort of spiritual path
whether they Jqiow it or not,"
Williams said. "We want to
help create an awareness of
the spiritu'a.l, physical and men-

everyone.•
The center demonstrates its
dedication to helping the
community by offering several
free classes each month along
with its regular curriculum of
classes and workshops, Funk
said.
"We ask each of our teach-
ers to offer at least one'free
class aside from their regular
classes as a community ser-

Funk said.

messages that crystals can con-

class taught by Barbara Rasor
that explores the concept of
emotions being transferred
from person to person.
Fees for regular classes and
workshops range from $5 for
an individual workshop to $185
for a series of classes. DJS·

classes with preregistration,
One of many services
offered at the center is Reild, a
healing ntual that opens M

energy, Funk said .

the 11-year-old bookstore and

NeWpC>rt Beach police were

burglarles between late 1995 and
1998. lbere were a. total of 32, a
number of them with strildng simi-·

There was that serles of burglAr-

Bay Avenue. Mostly jewelry and
sterling silver, with some of the
losses estimated between $350,000
to $700,000. .
The burglar also developed a.
habit -he liked single-family
homes on comers and he struck-
durlng broad daytight. Police were
intrlgued by his method of entry.
The burglar managed to get in
· through the houses' second levels.
The only clue in some thefts was a
ladder leaning against the ~de of
the home.
Police can cont.inn Branagan
was in Newport Beach during the
summer of 1997, when his power
boat, "Heartsong, • was docked in
the harbor.
When authorities sifted through
Branagan's storage unit in San
Diego, they found a luggage tag
with a Newport Beach address.·
The tag belonged to a relative of
one of the victims on 'the peninsula,
and Annstrong knew there might
be more stolen _£roperty. After

"There coU.ld eosily be 25 to 30
victims here in Newport,• he said
••He targeted Newport BeaCh for
the reasons any thief would. There
is a lot of property worth their time
and effort here."
Branagan didn't expect to be
caught when he was surrounded
by law enforcement officers at a
San Diego Postal Annex in April ..
The gray-haired man had pledged
he would never be caught alive
after he skipped a 1993 trlal in
Utah for allegedly molesting a 10·
year-old girl. Three loaded
firearms were in his truck at the
time of his 81fest.
·The dizzying arrily of property
found in Branagan's possession
stretched from San Diego to Provo,
Ufab, where a seardf of re.stdences

gan had everything from a gold-
plated menorah to a string of pearls.
The most difficult part for
authorities is finding out whether
the goods are stolen -and then
locating the proper owners. That
job will take months.
However, police have been aid·
ed by Branagan's apparent care-
lessness. He kept some of the trap·
pings of his work that couldn't be
resold. There were victims' hign
school diplomas and phone num-
bers. The trail of clues grew. Police
have used them to connect Brana-
gan to at least 10 burglarles in the
upscale Belmont Shores section of
Long Beach. They have al.so tied

Authorities paint Branagan as a
60phisticated bw-glar who prided
himself on his craft. Duitz said
Branagan did target wealthy com·
munities and homes that appeared
to be loaded with loot. He added
that, most of the time, Branagan
would enter a Window through the
second floor. In one instance,
Branagan tnay have uied a garden
hose to rappel down the side of .a
house.
Branagan's criminal history
dates back to the 19003. when.he
was convicted for first degree bur·
glary. He was considered a violent
offender aJ1tt sentenced to eight
years in prison for the 1978 rape of
a Newport Beach woman.
When Branagan wasn't spend·
lng time ln jail, police say he was
on the prowl. They know that
Branagan has been a formidable
foe for many years but hope that
the rest of his lile will be spent
behind bars.

uncommon chemistry into tonight's 40th Orange

at 7;15 at Orange Coast College.
But whether the Rebels' chemical reaction

will produce offensive fireworks, remains to be
seen.
Defense has dictated the outcome of this sum-

fewer than the average of the first 30 contests.
Since the South prevailed, 28-13, in 1986, the
