Let's try 1t as a pilot program.
If I'm wrong, and no one shows

the influence, let's at least keep
them off the road.
I'm hoping a hospital, police

will fund the pilot program. If 1t
proves to be effective, we can
probably get a grant from the

DAY 3
The FOir's mOst: fright eniilQ ride dep·ends ·on who you ·ask
quoteofthe day
Uh ... maybe not lfft'erter, Zipper,
Chaos and Evolution
are at the top of the
list for teenage riders.
KARL S<. tiWl ILI I<
!h1y Pio!
COSTA MESA The familiar
rides of bygone days hdve been
overshadowed by newer and
more intimidating · neighbors at
the Orange County Fair.
Sure, you can find the familiar
. standbys -the fems wheel, the
cdfouselr the tea cups. But they
dre surrounded by stomacb-
churrung terrors with names like
Chaos, Spin Out and Orbiter.
The three dre among a doien
rides deemed frightening
enough to warrant a free MWeek-
end Wamor· T-shirt for riders
danng enough to nde six in one
day.
The only red! question for the
mostly teendge nder'> was which
ride was most fnghterung.
For Jeremy, 13, of San Diego,
the Inverter parked the most
thnlls The nde fc>rm•d dozens
mto the cllI along the same orbit
as d ferris wheel, except they
were on the wrong side of the nm
and would be turnrd upside
down as the ride redched the top
of its arc
· But Jeremy chdnged his opin-
ion as he rode the Zipper, which
spun even more quickly thdn the
Inverter.
"I've changed my rrund. This
ride lS the scan est yet,· he said.
":Lots of rotating dnd flippmg . •

Jeremy Smith, 14, of Costa
Mesa, thought he'd seen every-
thing unW he boarded Chaos, a
nde that simultaneously spins,
flips, elevates and lowers riders
m a sickeningly unpredictable
senes of movements.
· "That lhlng really screwed me
up,· Smith said, as he staggered
out the exit. "It spins you around
reaUy fast and you go down and
almost hit the ground and then
they Jerk you back up. It's way
scary." ·
For B~n Hooker, 15, of Costa
Mesa, the most fearsome ride
wa Evolution, a towering con-
traption that spun riders 96 feet
in the air.
Riders sat m' a circle of out-
ward-facing chairs. The circle
spun while a huge, swing arm
hoisted the whole works upwdl'd.
The effect was of being a stone in
a slingshot. ·
•1t was scary as hell," Hooker
said. "Especially when they hang

tion scream and

you upside down and you can
see the whole fairground."
His fnend, Jaquie·Delzer, 11,
agreed.
"Evolution was scariest
because you sit upside down and
you are being held by just the
bars. It's better than Spin Out and
Zipper," Delzer said
I've been known to
eat a 'lot, bu(l don•t
think I could polish off
one of those things.

My assignment was simple:
Board the scary ndes dfld report
on them.
• I ignored the cotton candy,
brushed past the farm animals
Y shunned the hawkers implor-
):r\g me to win a stuffed arumaJ.
:There was work to be done.
• The first nde I found was
Chaos. It is a nng of outward-
facing chaus that fhp around as
l.He ring rotates sickerungly. I
.thought Chaos was more stom-.
ach-cbuming than fun because I

be Jerked in next. It isn't a ride
to try after lunch.
Next up was the Inverter,
which spins riders through a
verticdl orbit and dangles them
upside-down. I thought it was
scary. especially while hanging
upside down and reading litter
on the ground, but it was over in
JUSt more than a nunute.
Kamikaze was be~er. It
works the same as the Inverter
except you s1t m an enclosed
car, so it seems safer. But
Kamikaze is faster than the
Inverter, so the ride is more
exhilarating
After three tummy-twisters, I
needed a break so I hopped on
the Hydro-Slide, a standard
wooden boat nde. The nde
sends passengers plunging

down two water-lilled canals,
splashlng them. It was refresh-
ing, but not scary. I saw small
children exiting the nde wtth
nary a whlmper.
I would have got on the Hi
Miler, the only roller coaster at
the fair, but 1t broke as J stood m
line. It doesn't look too scary. I'
lS small roller coaster with no
twists and zero upside-down
action. In fact, lf you want a
frighterung roller coaster, skip
the local fairs and head to Magic
Mountain.
I moved on to Spin Out,
another spmrung, gyrating ride a
la Chaos Spm Out proved run,
though the nde was too short at ·
JUSl more than a minute. (Those
fair attendants need to keep
people up there for at least two
minutes so they can learn what
is scary about their ride)
I also rode Evolution, Top
Spin dlld the Zipper.
Zipper was a load of fun, but
I httve to give Evolution my vote
for the most frightening ride .
Like Chaos, you sit in a ring, but
tlus ring raises 96 feet in the air.
I found myself high in the all',
banging upside down, watching
the Earthlings appear to spin
about.
As for Top Spm, I recommend
dvo1ding it unless you have an
iron stomach. The nde flips peo-
ple head over heels in forward
and reverse. The flipping is fast
and violent. The ride is sort of
fun, but it is mainly a nausea
inducer.

his team's lone hit as he opened the game
with a lead-off infield single.
·~Uttle . League win· over the Viejo
All-Stars at Curtis Park Saturday.
HWe wer~ rather lucky today,• Coach
Ron Maggard said of the win. "We made
d bunch of mi.stakes, but we hung in
I.here and got the win.•
·we had to come back in lhe siXth,
eigl\th aud runth innings tOctay, ff Coach
Paul Von Berg said. "We could have
packed it in any number of times today,
but our guys never gave up and it paid off
for us.''
, After Newport tied the game in the
sixth inning, San Clemente regained the
lead in the top of the eighth, 6-5.
Dana Point tied lhe game at 10-10 in
the tiftb inning, before Newport regamed
the lead in the bottom of the fifth on DiN-
ucci's sacrifice fly, scoring Travis Moore.
· Brett Pettine pitched a solid game for
CMA but after sending Ocean View
down in order on just 10 pitches in the
first inning, lhe 12-year-old gave UJYthree
runs on two hits, two walks, and a hit bat-
ter m the second inning.
The CM.A defense, which "usually is a
solid group,• McGuire said, also commit-
ted some costly fielding errors. Fours were wild for center fielder Nick
Palchikoff. He was 4 for 4 (including two
home runs) with four runs scored and
four RBis.
In the bottom of lhe eighth, Thomas
Dlalynas singled, went to second on a
wild pitch, stole third and scored on a
grounder by Scott Colton.
Uqfortunately for Newport, Dana
Point tied the game in the sixth before
exploding for seven runs in the seventh.
"I thought Brett pitched a real good
game," McGuire said ot Perrine. "He
was a starting pitcher for us last year, and
he'll bounce back from this one.• "It was the first time all year that any-
one tut two home runs in one game in our
league," Maggard said.
Newport jumped out to an earl}'.._ 4-0
lead. Wess Presson and Palchikoff£c6red
on a couple of Viejo errors in the tirst.
Palchikoff came through in the second
with his first home run, a two-run blast to
dead center field, sconng pitcher Scott
Thomson ahead of him.
A ninth-inning home run gave the
lead , once again, to San Clemente,
before Newport made one final come-
back.
Zack Von Ber~ed off the ninth with a
walk and scored i n a clutch double by
Allen Hardison. A couple of San
Clemente errors followed, allowing
Hardison to score the winning run, giving
Newport another life.
Moore, Cameron and Swilt each had
three hits for Newport. The threesome
also combined to score seveh runs.
Newport's opening ~me of the day
was the exact opposite.
Newport could only muster up three
hits, but costly mistakes and bases on
balls from, the Los Alamitos All-Stars
were the difference in Newport's 5-4 win.
McGuire, who said he suffered his first
Mercy Rule defeat in 28 poslseasoo
games, plans to start DanJel Cooper it)
Tuesday's elimination showdown with
the loser of Saturday's Seaview-H\ltiting-
ton Valley contest.
On the mound, Thomson ran into
:,ome tough luck in the third, giving up
five runs {only two earned) on three
Newport errors to give Viejo a 5-4 advan-
ldge
Moore and Geoff Rill each drove in
key RBis while three other runs we re
scored on wild pitches and passed balls
from Los Alamitos.
Cooper, who has just one career
defeat, replaced Perrine with two out and
CMA down nine runs in the fifth inning.
He gave up just one hit in two batters
faced, with Hank Conger's RBI single
e nding the game. "It was a real excitihg game, to say the
least," Von Berg said. •we showed a lot
of heart out there on such a hot day.•
Colton, Hardison and Connor Whalen
each had two hits for Newport, who plays
tonight at 5: 15 at the same site.
Rill. along with teammate Ryan Rowe
pitched effectively, giving up only three
walks while striking out eight.

clea~-up hitter, owned lhe plate Saturday
with a 4 for 4 performance. -by Tony Altobelli
-by Mike Sciacca "Scott pitched much better than the
numbers would indicate," Maggard said.
"He really came back and threw excep-
llonally well. I don't know if I could have
come back trom an mrung like that.•
The pitching duo of Phillip Bannan
and Gregory Garte combined for 11
strikeouts Qver nine innings of work.

regain the Jedd, 6-5, Tyler Lents. who
elided m Vle1o's five-run third inning,

scoring Presson, Palchikoff and Mitch

Despite Newport advancing into
uncharted waters 10 the District 55 Play-

come.
"We're not firushed," he srud "lf our

game the way were capable of playing,
we have a long ways to go.•
Bonng is not one of them.
This game had just about everything a
baseball fan would want in a game,

HOcean View always seems to field
solid teams, and this year's team is m> dif-
ferent,# McGuire said. HThey're the No. i
team coming into th1s tournament -and
rightfully so.#
Rightfully so,· indeed. Ocean View
solidified its top billing as it opened
defense of its tournament title by scoring
a 10-0 Mercy Rule victory.
In the tournament, the Slammers
made it to the title game alter defeating
the Gloucester (Canada) Hornets, and
tying teams from Upland and Central

A -Wlule your club honors in front
of the opening bidder might not be
of much value, your 0.344 shape is
most attracuve. Pan.ner rates to have
something in diamonds, so bid two
diamonds now nalher than worry
about having to come in later at a
higher level.

A -According to lhe Rule of 2 and
