her screen debut at 12 in •A

Based on Billy Wilder's
1950 film, "Sunset Boule-
vard• takes place in Holly-
wood and tells the story of a
young, unsuccessful screen-
writer who has a chance
encounterwithlegendary
screen actress Norma
Desmond. It has been touted
as Andrew Uoyd Webber's
most captivating musical.
Despite returning to the
character now as an ofd
friend, Clark originally had
to be persuaded to play
Desmond, a
perf onnan~e that lasted until
April 199?.
After playing the charac-
ter for nearly two years,
Clark said she feels she
knows Desmond intimately.
"We've sort of merged -
I find her funny and l think
she's vulnerable," Clark
said. "Underneath that
veneer, there is this young
girl that never quite got into
adulthood."
With that insight, Clark
has taken the character back
to when Desmond was 16 or
17. Unlike Glenn Close or
Patty Lupone, Clark retreats
into Desmond's past. .
Working with a new
American cast has been an
amusing change for Clark.
"I'm the only Brit playing
an American,• she said.
Although as soon as she sets
foot on stage, Clark's accent
is American as all distinc-
tions vanish.
This production has done
away with the cumbersome,
full-blown stage set The
hydraulic set was a techrucal
impossibility to take on tour,
Clark explained, as it took a
full week to put together and
another week to take down.
j
Doily PilQ_t
"Economically, it was a
disaster,• she said. The
American director, Susan
Schulman, found the set too
distracting and decided to
redesign it, allowing her cast
to shine, Ul.Stead.
nansforming herself Into
Desmond takes Clark two
hours each night While she
could certainly get dressed
and into makeup more
quickly, Clark said that she
needs this time.
"It's a very slow process o(
letting go of me and becom-
ing Norma," she said. "It .
gives me ti.me to think, grad-
ually my face disappears and
Norma's appears."

few times, then jogged back to
her position. Hard core. But
whatever your reason (or adnur-
ing them -for their skill, their
toughness, their stature as role-
models -please do.
And that bnngs us to the
stately Ms. Davenport, who can
be fount\ at the other end of the
recognition spe1=trum. Gee, I'm
sorry, was the press just too
busy? Maybe they were all tied
up getting ready for that scintil-
latirlg men's final. Agassi really
had Sampras womed at one
point. He thought Andre was
dead. ~Y the end of the match,
Agassi was gettirlg the rhythm
of Pete's serves. He still couldn't
see them, but he could hear ·
them much more clearly.
Would whoever stole Lindsay.
Davenport's moment ID the sun
please return m
Lindsay is, by her own
description, a marketing night-
mare. She's bright, pretty, an
incredible athlete -but hope-
lessly normal ShP doesn't have
a dy$functional family, not even
one psychotic, egomaruacal par-
ent. She has no scandals to
report -no drugs or booze, no
flghts in late-night dubs, no tat-
toos, no wild hair. She hasn't
even tried to strangle her coach
for heaven's sake. LlndSdy, what
on earth ar~ you trunking? Do
you want to be a professional
athlete or not?
Finally, another story from
the continent mdde me promise
to never complairl ubout a bad
llight again. Meehan Nasseri
left Iran to study m England in
1971. When he returned home,
he got•in hot water with all the
Shah's men for protesti~g .
against the government. He
was imprisoned, then to sed
unceremoniously out of the
country, sans pa!;sport, sans l.D.,
sans -well, everything. He
was granted political asylum in
Belgium and given refugee cre-
dentials. Continuing his run of
good luck, his briefcase was
stolen sometime later, creden-
1lals and .all. He wandered
around Europe Ulltil he was
detained _by the poijce on a visit
to Paris. They dr99ged him to
Charles de Gaulle Airport and
tried to ship hun off somewhere,
anywhere, but no country
would bite since he had no
papers and no identification.
Eventually, the gendarmes ·
told tum to get himseU on the
next thing smokin' to anywhere
as long as it wasn't in France -
they must have mistaken him
for an Amencan. They told him
that, believe it or not, in 1988.
And that's exactly where he's
been for the last 11 years -at
the auport, sleeping on a bench,
washing up m the men's room
dnd living off handouts from
airport employees and odd jobs
for dllport shops.
So the next time you're stuck
at an a1rp0rt and start complam-
mg to the guy next to you,
make sure it isn't Mr. Nassen
I gotta go.

• Ann1;lal Bastille Day
Race will fill the streets
of Newport Beach
Saturday evening.
NEWPORT BEACH -Coro-
na de! Mar I bgh School coach
Bill Sumner has never rrussed
the Bastille Day Race.
In fact, he was the one who
started the com~tition 15 years
ago with its onginal name "Run
for the Stars,"
This Saturday, walkel'$. ·run-
ners and bik~ riders will once
again storm the streets of New-
port Beach to participate in
Orange County's prem.ler twi-
light SK run, 51< run/walk, and
scenic 25K family bike ride.
•Everything I do is about
running, said the 51-year-old
Sumner, who runs more than 50
races each year m addition to
coaching the Cal Coast Track
Club, OC Fit d.Dd Corona dal
Mar High School's track and
cross-country teams. •
"Since I run all the time, I
won't do anything special to
prepare myself for the BastiUe
Day race,• he said. '
Sumner w the personal roach
for Kelly AaU1e.rs, the female win·
ner of last years SK race.
#J love runrung because 1t
helps you think positive, set
,goals, practice teamwork and
strive for accomplishments, fl
Sumner said.
. Sumner u es running, he
said, as a hook to connect with
people, especially the younq
athletes he trams. His metha(LJ>
·to care about what is going on
in his runners' lives, not just m
thell athletic aspects.
ln 1996, Sumner sent six run-
ners to the o'tympic trials, and
this year he bds been invited to
the .Olympic tra.1mng camp for
coaches for the third tune.
Over the years, the Bastille
Day celebration, which attracts a
crowd of up to 5,000, has turned
into. a block party with live jazz, an international food fair and
micro-brew beer garden.
The race begins at 4 p.m. and
runs unbl 8:30 p.m. at the Sut-
ton Place Hotel.
All proceeds from the celebra-
tion will beneht the Second Har-
vest Food Bank of Orange Coun-

food bank m Orange County.
The food bank serves more than
185,000 people each month ..

Ortiz was in tears as she got off

Initially, Ortiz's family was hes-

eager to touch the woman they

,. On making the announce·
ment, Chinese government
~J?Rkesman · Zhao Q12hang
denied allegations ma~6 by Cox
8'ld members of b.iS House com-
mittee that China spied on U.S
military sites and stole nuclear
information.
But according to the New Chi-
na News Agency, Zhao said oth-
erwise: ~since China has already
possessed atom bomb and
hydrogen bomb technologies, it
is quite lbgical and natural for it
to master the neutron boll}b t~h-·
nology through its own efforts
ewer a reasonably short period of
• tune .•
Not so, Cox argued China's
development of the bomb clearly
coinodes With the evtdence of
spying, which dates back to the
1970s.
According to the New China
News Agency report, China
began serious test!. for the neu-
tron bomb in 1986 and mastered
the design between 1990 and
1992.
Thal timeline minors his com-
rruttee's fi.ndmqs that China con-
IJ.nued spying well into the 1990s
when the Chmese gained
enough information to build their
own neutron bomb, Cox said.
Such condusions are "silly:
and sunply a matter of coinci-
dence, Zhao said
..
"lt was revealed l ter from
U.S. declassified documents th t
Chinese and American sctentist!I
almost simultaneously advanced
a similar concept in their respec·
tive research,· Zhao "said. ·nus
fully indicates that the la'Y gov-
erning science exists objectively,
and ~ple !rom all over the
world can get bold of it sooner or
later no matter what method is
used."
Cox stressed . that the
announcement is not the start of
another Cold War. But China's
possession of the neutron bomb
is of concern in Southeast Asia
because it typically would be
placed on short-range missiles.
The neut(on bomb, unlike the
bombs the U.S. dropped during
World War It, does not do Wide·
spread ddll}age to buildings and ·
other infrastructure. Its radiation
effects m the aftermath also arc
less, wluch makes it better-suited
for deployment near the country
dropping the bomb,· or even
Within that country's borders. ~
"It is more tempting to use
than the standard nuclear
weapons that are so messy in
their effects.• Cox said.
The main concern, Cox scUd,
is the possibility that U.S. troops
in Southeast Asia could come
under fire from the weapon.
China's announcement came
just days after Taiwanese offi-
cials seemed to back away from
the "one China• policy, which
bas kept relations in the region
relatively stable for decades.
