But making a profit doesn't
come easy. There are many steps
potential inventors must take that
sometimes cost thousands of dol-
lars. said Eliot Geeting, who
heads the _Huntington Beach-
based Inventor's Forum. Geeting,
who designed a bug stick that
catches insects but doesn't kill
them, said many times people
will fork out thousands of dollars
when they aren't prepared.
"There are some simple steps
you can take that don't cost much
at all." said Geebng, who teach-
es a daily seminar at the exhibit
"You have to nurture yow idea
and then bring it to a state of pro-
tection."
Geebng Sdld many people try
to obtam a patent, a legal protec-
tive form, before researchmg. He
said there are several steps
before paying for a patent: 1)
conduct a patent search to see
whether it has been created and
2) build a prototype.
Geeting said he was success-
ful because people believed in
tu.s bug stick and they financially
backed him. Although be is look-
ing to put the product in retail ·
stores, the stick can garner
$30,000 on a home shopping net-
work in 10 minutes.
"I've made a 40,000 i)ercent
return on our investment m the
first year," he said. "You have to
get validation from people who
don't think you are crazy to back
you up."
MacLaine· has sold out her
first batch of dog potties and
plans to keep plugging away.
She estimates by the end of the
year, she could rake in more than
$1 million.
"If you stay true to your vision,
you can create something that
people will buy,• she said. • 1

The Nationals found out the hard way

What Jo you bid now?
A· You have goc~. uppo<t for part·

without four carcJs in responder's
suit if there is any other bid avail·
able. Herc. that option exists. A
jump rebid or three hearts expresses
the valui of 1.tu hand perfectly.

Partner opens the bidding wiih one
Jp8de. What do you respond?
A • One method of showing a sub-
ntinimum l">-over-one response is to
bid two diamonds followed by three
diamond at your next tum.
However, this 1s the wrong hand for
that action-· you h;ive too much
strength OUlSide your long suit.
Respond one no uump, then bid dia'·

A • No diamond bid does this hand
~ustice.. The hand 1s su1tabl6 for play
in any of the other three suha, and
there is just one way 10 gel this
across to pclrlner. Start with a t.ake-
out double. If partner converts for
penalties, that might be your only
plus score. .

Whal do you btd now'?
A-TIICtC is no need to do anything
more than to complete the descnp-
tion of your hold mg -you cannot
tell whether the hand will play better
in clubs or no trump. For the
moment bid three heans. to see what
response that evokes from partner.
Q 6 ·East-West vulnerable, as South
you hold:
•AQJ87 O AK94 0 QJ8 •6
Your righl·hand opponent opens the
bidding with one spade. What action
do yo" take?
A -From the early days of contract
bridge a nugget of wisdom has been
handed down that covers this situa·
Lion perfectly: When you are fixed.
stay fixed. It rs unlikely that your
vulnerable opponent is trying to pull
a fasf one. so pass to see what hap-
