NEWPORT-MESA -Holidays have a
way of pointing up d.ivisi~ns between the
haves and the have-nots. On Christmas,
those without families head to the bars. On
Valentine's Day, the loveless bury them-
selves in boxes of tissue.
Sunday, depending on who you asked,
Mother's Day marked a time of family
warmth. And for some, a day that couldn't
end soon enough.
"There will be a lot of girlfriends but
there's only one mother, so I'll treat her like
gold," said Jesse Nuno, 22, a beefy, tat-
tooed Orange Coast College student who
lives with his mother in Costa Mesa.
Standing outside Conroy's Rowers on
Harbor Boulevard looking for bouquets, he
added, "She's been my mother for 22
years. One day out of the year (to show
gratitude) -it's not much."
Yards away, 32-year-old Aaron .Chasen
walked through the aisles of flowers .on the
first Mother's Day he will spend without his
mother. Dressed in black jeans and a black
shirt, the Corona del Mar man searched for
bouquets to set on the grave of Lynn
Chasen, who died at 70 last July of lung
cancer.
"She liked roses,• Chasen said. "We're

• EDITOR'S NOTE: Th is is another in a series of articles on plans to revitalize the Balboa Penin-
sula. Other articles will continue to focus on those affected by the proposed changes.
By Jennifer Armstrong, Daily Pilot
Bill Howard doesn't know much
about the city's efforts to revi-
talize the Balboa Peninsula's
flagging business districts. But
he does know he wouldn't mind seeing
a few changes around Z Pizza, the Lido
Village shop he martages.
Parking, of course, causes some
problems for employees and cus-
tomers, he says. A little more landscap-
ing would be a welcome change. And
more coffee hoµses, a bigger movie
theater and a health club would draw
some business from the malls, he says.
"When I get ready to go out at
night, I'll go over to niangle Square or
Crystal Court, where they have group·
ings of things I want," says Howard, a
Laguna Beach resident.
Howard -like many of those who
work, shop and eat in the area bor-
dered by Newport Boulevard, 32nd
Street and the bay -hasn't heard the
city's grand plans for the peninsula.
Officials are now launching a public
outreach effort they say will change
that as they draft parking man~ent
and tenant recruitment strategies.
A citizen committee earlier this year
proposed such ideas as establishing
Via Lido as a shopping district and
making the area near City Hall a town
square. The council has already nixed
the controversial plan to reroute Via
Lido traffic to 32nd Street.
As things stand, the neighborhood
includes the red brick warehouse that"

with the tournament operator, forcing
executive director Bob N~y to scramble
for a new site to host the Senior PGA
Tour event.
International Sports and Event Mar-
keting, the event's manager the past two
years, has a three-year agreement with
Toshiba that will extend the life of
Orange County's only PGA stop into the
year 2000:
ISM, however, was told in the form of
a letter that it was no longer weltome to
host its event at Newport Beach Country
Club because of payment defaults
#which persist even today nearly two
months after the 1997 tournament,"
f CCording to David Wooten, President of
International .Bay Clubs, Inc., which
ownsNBCC. •
MNBCC believ_es that i1 is nou n its
best interests to enter into an agreement
with ISM for continuation of the tourna-
ment because of continual defaults by
ISM under the prior tournament agree-
ment,• Woote n added in a statement,
which also went out to three city officials,
who plan to rally the principals this w~k
in a last-ditch effort to save the tourna-
ment for Newport Beach's economy.
Neely, meanwhile, must find another
venue for the fourth Senior Classic,
which was played initially at Mesa Verde
Country Club in -i995. Tustin Ranch,
Coto de Caza and Pelican Hill Golf Club
{Link Cou.,rset are pessible-leeaoons
next year, Neely said. _
Senior Tour golfers and officials raved
about NBCC's layout and playa.Pility, but
above all most said they were pleased
with the convenient location of the golf
course from the airport, hotels and shop-
ping, and the numerous amenities in the
area.

The trio, along with other community
leaders, hope to bring the_ two sides '
togetber to keep the event m Newpo~

because of the tournament, Neely said.
MThe two sides are not that far apart,"
said Hill, also a member of the event's
recent events unfold. MBut it's the atti-
tude of the application that bas been the ,
difficulty. It's like oil and water. {ISM and
NBCC) have two totally different •
philosophies and management styl~s
and they just haven 't bad any compati·
billty."
Wooten and Ray both said they would
prefer the event stay at NBCC, but only
under new tournament management.
ISM is 60 days late on payments totalli.rig
$25,000, Ray·said.
Neely admitted ISM, which paid •
NBCC a site fee of $75,000 last year and
. $125,000 this year, is in arrears $25,000.
But Neely said late payments are not
uncommon in the golf-tournament b~

M It's their way or the highway,• Neely
said of NBCC owners.
· In addition, an issue between the,par-,

#Frankly, myself and other executives
here at NBCC are unwilling to do busi-

hold up their end and pay their bills,• '
Wooten said.
Neely has until July to announce the
new site of the golf tournament, when
the PGA Tour hosts its annual meetings.
That is, unless local leaders can convince
NBCC officials to reach an 11th-hour
agreement with ISM and keep the event ,
here.
Wooten reiterated Sunday, however, ·

was Toshiba's point man for the golf tour-

Yugoslavia took the title
game, 9-8.
• Yugoslavia has the ultimate answers for a 9-8 victory at Cd.M
in Newport Invitational Tournament championship duel Sunday.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
Pfl. MA -Throughout
piotislip match· of the 1997
ternational Water Polo Tour-
unday between Team USA
and Yugoslavia, the mother o• Team
USA's Gavin Arroyo waved the Ameri-
can flag, fired up the crowd of nearly
2,000 Corona del Mar High School's
Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center and
did everything sh ort of jump in the
water to assist her son's team .
But even on Mother's Day, Arroyo's
mom -who was clad in a stars and
stripes jacket and hat -couldn't lift the
Americans over Yugoslavia, who pre-
vailed 9-8.
"We did a goodiob the last four days
and just didn't today," Team USA's
Coach John Vargas said. "We made
some erro~ that have to be
corrected.•
Some of those mishaps cost
Vargas' squad the title.
Yug~slavia jumped on the
Duplanty, who tallied nine saves in
the final, added, "The way we played
with a man-advantage wasn't too hot.
Both offensively and defensively, that is
a huge part of the game, and our num-
bers in those areas were bad."
Despite that, the Americans hung in
the contest.
With the Europeans ahead 9-7 and
2:04 left in the game, Corona del Mar
High product Chris Oeding sent ct pass
to hole man HWIU>wt. Humbert raised
lus torso about a foot out of the water,
caught the ball with one hand and rifled
it past Jovanovich.
With 32 ticks remaining on pie clock,
Vargas called a timeout to set up a play
with hopes of tying the game.
The play seemed to be going down
as planned. Humbert freed himself in
.front of the goal, but Oeding's pass was
wide and Humbert reached to snag it. It
went off his hand and landed
in front of Jovanovich, who
kept it until time expired.
"The play didn't come off

of the game, but about 15 sec-
onds later, U.S.'s Chris Hum-
bert, who earned the tourna-
ment's Field Player of the
Tournament honor, fired a-no-
look backhand into the goal JOHN VARGAS
to tie the score. •
Humbert led his squad
with three goals m the final
That boosted his tournament
total to 13, which tied him for
the team lead with Oeding.
Jeremy Laster scored a
pair of goals for the U.S. and
"{he score went back and
forth throughout the first quarter and a
play that was nullified by the expired
game clock seemed to light a spark
beneath Vargas' squad and ignite the
standing room only ·audience. Team
USA's goallceeper Chris Duplanty, who
resides in Corona del Mar, won a face-
to-face duel with Yugoslavia's Aleksan-
dar Sapic by rejecting a shot attempt.
Duplanty hurled the ball to Humbert on
the counter-attack. Humbert went one-
on-one with Yugoslavia's keeper, Dra-
gan Jovanovich, and whipped a score
directly past him. The noise of the bois-
terous crowd, though, had. drowned out
the buzzer that marked the end of the
period. The goal was noiJood.
But the momentum definitely swung
to hosts, who took a 5-4 lead to the third
quarter. The go-ahead goal was scored
by Kyle Kopp when he drew Jovanovich
out of the net and <linked the ball in with
19 seconds remaining in the half.
Then Team USA began missing
shots, throwing the ball away, missing
defensive assignments and not taking
advantage of man-advantag~. The
, hosts converted just four of 13 opportu-
nities when Yugoslavia was doW'n a
player because of an exclusion.
"You can't win ames with that kin
'of percentage,• Vargas said. "But we
were still in it, you cao.'.l blame the game
on that. It was the little fundamental
errors.•
Wolf Wigo also added one.
"I'm pleased we got to the finals, but
not satisfied," Vargas said.
Vargas said the team will begin train-
ing for the FINA World Cup in Athens,
Greece, which is May 27-June 1, Simil-
iar to the regimen the team followed pri-
or to the Newport International, the
team will be split with one group train-
ing in Northern California and the other
in Newport Beach.
"In terms of how much training
we've done and the system Coach Var-
gas has begun, to implement, we ,can
compete with anyone in the world,•
Duplanty said. "I think how we have
performed here has given us confidence
and we need that.• ------
Humbert. ~ho returned from playing
professionally in Italy just days before
the tournament began, said the squad
that played .in Newport had, in essence,
only been together for the six days of th~
tournament.
"We've been together six days and
were playing with the best teams
around,• he said. "That's a great step for
us; we're competing in every game.·
Team USA got to the final game of
the tournament by-defeating Greece 7-6
Saturday. Y~goslavia beat Croatia 12-6.
olher ac on un ay, ro·a a

win over Australia, and Greece claimed
fifth place by beating Canada 13-2.

What action do you take?
A • A close decision. Since partner
is a passed hand, point.-counters
will be quick to claim that the val·
ues for game simply are not there.
However, the hand is rich in con·
trots. Since aces and kings are
undervalued in the point-count, we
would raise to three hearts.

A · With J 0 points in high cards
the hand is a little heavy for a mere
two-heart raise. but there are two
major flaws. The hand is fl at, and
the three queens may not be worth
their value. We like two hearts, and ·
proponents for a limit raise should
brush up on their hand evaluation.
