Huber, the moment she nervously
awaited for years came and went
quickly Monday in Orange Coun-
ty Superior Court. Huber, 53, tes-
tified only briefly at the murder
trial of John J. Pamalaro, the man
accused of abducting, raping and
killing ber 23-year-old daughter.

don't want the tournament back,
saying its operator, International
Sports and Event Marketing, is
60 days late on $25,000 in pay-
ments.
"It breaks my heart," Mayor
Jan Debay said of losing the
tournament.
Newport Beach Conference &
Visitors Bureau President Ros-
alind Williams said there's no
way to know how much the tour-
nament brings in for the city. The
event means more business for
local hotelS, restaurants and
tourist attractions -more tlian
$1 million, WUliam.s estimated.

is an understatement," she said.
She said the city would be
happy to host tournament offi-·
cials or spectators if the event
lands nearby next year.

convince the marketing compa-

Meanwhile, they're hoping
those scenic shots of Newport
shown during ESPN's tourna-
ment coverage this year piqued
the interest of enough tourists to
make up for the financial loss.
"The one thing you can't put
your finger on is what the public-
ity does for us," City Manager
Kevin Murphy said. "They made
Newpart Beach look awfully
good."

that a high-risk sex offender -
James Lee Crummel, 53 -lives m

cation in an education journal this

Families needed for
exchange students
Volunteer families are needed
to host teenage exchange stu-
dents from one of several coun-
tries, including Germany, Poland,
Czech Republic, France and
Brazil.
The students are expected to
arrive in the United States in mid-
August. They will stay with the
families for the entire school year.

organizers from the Educational

tion at local high schools.

Rainforest Cafe plans
to hire 350 employees
Want to serve customers goril-
la grilled cheese sandwiches or
jungle chowder? The Rainforest
Cafe, which is scheduled to open
a\ South Coast Plaza on June 9, is
seeking to hire about 350 employ-
ees for its new 16,800-square-
foot, 300-seat re:;taurant, which is
currently under construction.
The simulated jungle-themed
restaurant, which is estimated to
cost from $5 million to $8 million
to complete, began holding inter-
views last week.
The fast-growing Rainforest
Cafe chain will make its Califor-
nia debut by locating its seventh
restaurant at the plaza. The
restaurant is being constructed in
place of Carl's Jr., adjacent to
Sears.

Dance classes to raise

A ballroom dance class is
being organized by the Costa
Mesa High School Grad Night
committee to help raise desper-
ately needed funds for the
school's drug-and alcohol-free
event for seniors.
The class will be held four con-
secutive Wednesdays beginning
May 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the
school's cafeteria, 2650 Fairview
Road, Costa Mesa. The cost is $25
per person and $45 per couple.

Bob Henry dedication
set for August
Plans are finally underway for
the Bob Henry Park dedication
ceremony, scheduled for 1 to 5
p.m . Saturday.
The day's events will feature
games and food, said city Com-
munity Services Director Ladonna
Kienitz. Construction of the park
at 16th Street and Dover Drive
has dragged on because of soil
problems and rain delays.
Most of the equipment for the
baseball and soccer fields are
now in place. The park was origi-
nally slated to be finished late last
year.
City officials haven't quite
hammered out a way to memori-
alize the park's namesake, a
Newport Beach police officer shot
at the spot in 1995.while respond-
ing to a distress call. The monu-
ment will sit at the comer of the
park and honor all city employees
killed on duty.

ship has stopped contract
extension negotiations with
Toshiba Senior Classic officials,
the two sides relterated their
positions Monday, seemingly
'l. closing. the book on
-a stormy two-year
relationship.
The latest dis-
pute between the
tournament opera-
tor and golf course
proprietor is report-
edly an outstanding
food and beverage
invoice that was
created during the
Senior PGA Tour
event March 10-16.

International Bay Clubs, Inc ..
which owns NBCC, said an
unpaid bill totaling about
$25,000 is unacceptable two
months after the event.

tor of the Senior Classic, has
been challenging the debt

pro-am turnouts and the
apparent lack of corporate
sponsorships.
"We're confused by that,
because by everybody's
assessment we had more spon-
sors this year than last year,"

Alan Sawyer, the longest-
tenured faculty member in
• Orange Coast College's hist6ry, is
• hanging up his teaching and
coaching responsibilities. l:fe'U
retire when spring semester
classes come to a close later this
month.
Sawyer came to the colleg e
when it was observing its 10th
anniversary, in the fall of 1957.
He leaves as O CC prepares to
unleash its gaJa 50th anniversary
celebration. He's been on the
staff longer than anyone else
-teacher, administrator or
classified staffer.
He's outlasted such venerable
Orange Coast College legends as
Basil H. Peterson, Robert B.
Moore, Nonnan E. Watson and
Hany R. LeBard -all of whom
!'\ave campus buildings named
after them!

withdrew from consideration.
"l felt it wasn't time for me to
leave Coast, and I've never
reg retted that decision," said
Sawyer.

The Sawyers plan to move to
Sequim, Wa. in a year two,

services as a math tutor to the

Born in Long Beach, be grew
up in San Pedro, and made such
an impact in basketball and
tennis that three years ago a
plaque recognizing his exploits
was placed on the city's Walk of
Fame.
After his freshman year on
UCLA's varsity, he dropped
out of school, enlisted in the
Anny Air Force and served in
Japan.
"I need to grow up a bit,· he
explained. "My first year at
UCLA hadn't been a huge
success and I needed to add
some maturity before going
back. It was one of the best
decisions of my life.~
He returned to UCJ,.A and

('47-48) under Wilbur Johns, a
coach knoWQ best for his

season, replacing himself with
John Wooden.
Sawyer would go on to be the
Bruins' leading scorer for the
next two years under Wooden,
an All-Pacific Coast Conference
