SERYING THE NEWPbRT -COSTA MESA COm.AtJNITIES SINCE 1907 MONDAY, .JULY 26,· 1999
. :A proposal from
CJ. Segerstrom
&Sons
C .J. Segerstrom & Sons have
proposed a low-rise devel-
opment project of retail and
office space for its Home Ranch
property located near Fairview
Road and the
San Diego
Freeway.
Mesa Verde
Community
,-Inc. President
.Rkhard Kass
adniitted at a
community
meeting last
week that be was-
n't sure what the Home Ranch
project was when be first heard
about it at a board meeting.
At the mention of Home
Ranch, Kass said he thought to
himself, "Well, if Paul Newman
bas one, why not the
Segerstroms?"
NO RESPECT
Daily Pilot reporters were
crushed to learn that the Orange
County Fair wouldn't have its
annual media contest -one
that provides cash prizes and a
free lunch -or so they thought.
The fair's publicity office sent
out a press release last week
peralding the •Best Reporter"
and •Best Photographer" award.
The winners were chosen from a
pool of Orange County Press
Club's contest. The Pilot's editor-
ial corps weren't noWied of the
contest and wasn't included in
the fair's covert edition.
Much to the chagrin of the
four reporters who comprised the
Pilot staff, the press release was
passed around, scrutinized and
promptly lhroWn in the trash.
DON'T EAT THE ICE CREAM
Stalf at the Orange County
Fair is usually scrambling all
over the Fairgrounds to make
sure everything goes smoothly.
As a result, they find that using
radios to communicate is a lot
more convenient than the tele-
phone. However, they've decided
to spare the details for anyone
who might be listening in.
Calls for clean-up for spilled
ice cream are not what they
appear to be.
•Spilled Ice Cream" is just
another way for fair staff to refer
to animal manure.
HOSTING VISITORS .
FROM A SISTER OTY
Newport Beach is scheduled
to host a delegation from Okaza-
ki. Japan, today and will rededi-
cate the fnendsbip sculpture at
its new site at the Central
Ubrary.
To honor the Sister City rela-
tionship, Okazaki presented the
friendship sculpture to Newport
Beach in 1934. Newport Beach
is hosting a delegation from
Okazaki, who will be presenting
a celebratory event of the
Japanese festival "Obon."
This year is the 15th
anniversary of that relationship
and to mark the occasion, 18 vis-
itors from Okazaki will arrive for
several planned events.

DAYLIGHTS
It may seem contradictory to
ec automobiles drivin~ along
durin$ daylight hour with their
headlights on. Daytime running
light • however, do make l>Cnse in
term of safety by making
vehicles more conspicuous. The
light have been mandatory on
new car m Canada since the
beginning of the decade, and
mo t Scandinavian nations have
been. using them-for up to two
decad~s. The e northern-latitude
countries t.Vere the first to adopt
daytime running tights because
they work best in the dim light
associated with long twilight. In
any ca e, 'leveral studies from
Europe, Canad.a, and thls country
have hown that daytime running
lights probably help reduce
daytime multi-car crashes. Thu •
increasing numbers of car makers
are outfitting their products with
this f eaturc.

could help avert hundred of

year.
RIGID TillNKING
One of the claims car makers
often make about, their products
involves improvements in
"torsional rigidity." This term
refers to the·automobile's ability
to ro i t twisting forces. In
addition. desi_gners pay great
attention to "bending rigidity"
and "re onant frequen~y" (which
refers to vibration). Why should
these seemingly arcane element
be important to car buyerfi? Jn
order to avoid the squeaks and
rattle that consumers as ociate
with poor-quality vehicles, car
makers must produce products
with good overall rigidity and natural frequencies (vibrations)
that do not overlap among . the
vehicle' many sub'Y terns. When
these factor are taken into proJ>er

But when she was
selected five months ago to
become Orange Coast College's
new athletic director, the
response across campus was
overwhelmingly positive.
Hilgendorf has been an OCC
faculty member and coach for 29
years and she has a host of •
friends at the college.
Hilgendorf, 58, was OCC's
highly successful women's
volleyball coach for 19 seasons,
compiling a 233-100 career
record. She led the Lady Pi.rates
to state charnp1onshlps m 1978,
1980 and 1982.
The hard-worlang mentor
gwded her Bucs to six
conference titles and mto the
playoffs 15 times during her 19
seasons.
A longtime Corona· del Mar
resident, Hilgendorf was
mducted into the California
Community College Volleyball
Coaches Association Hall of
Fame in 1986.
She was assistant dthletic
director under Dick Tucker for
seven years, from 1977 through
1984.
Since 1991 Hilgendorf has
worked in the area of cumculum
and teaching assignments for
OCC's Division of Physical
Education and Athletics.
The OCC coach was a
member of the board of directors
for the state's Commission on
Athletics for sut years~ and, for
•the past year, served as president
of the Orange Empire
Conference.
Jane Hilgendorf, ever upbeat,

l of managing decisions. If
necessary, I can make a quick
decision. But I prefer to sit and
mull things for a while When I
have the luxury to ~o so.•
N eedless to say, Hilgendorf
has more than paid her dues
irl OCC's Athletic Department.
•she has great integrity.· says
P.irate football coach Mike Taylor.
•Jane plays by the rules and is
fair. Everyone in the department
appreciates that. You know
where you stand with Jane."
lrack and field coach Fred
Hokanson schooled Wlth

more than 35 years ago and has
erved with her at OCC for 29
years. ·she has credibility and ..
he's not afraid to make tough

Men's and women's volleyball
oach C huck Cutenese agrees.

But Hilgenddtf wasn't exactly

• In fact, she didn't even apply

certain I wanted to be in a
position where I might have to
discipline some of them or have
chsagreements. I've seen people '
m other circumstances lose
friends when they took over
managerial positions. I didn't
want that to happen to me.•
Besides, Hilgendorf was seri·
ously considering retirement.
"I'd done it all," she says. "I'd
been a coach and administrator
m the department and I was
thinking that it might be time for
me to leave and to let a younger
person step m. Playing golf five
days a week sounded pretty
enticing."
Hilgendorf is a golf fanatic. A
member of the Newport Beach
Country Club, she's been playing
senously for 10 years.
At one time, she had a seven
handicap. Today, because of her
busy schedule, she has a 10 and
is hoping to whittle that down to
eight with help from LPGA
teaching pro and good friend,
Pam Higgins.
After Hilgendorf spent a
month last summer as OCC's
interim athletic di.rector, she had
a change of heart.
·People in the department
accepted me as irlterirn AD, and
encouraged me to pursue the
permanent position. I ended up
surprising myself. I actually
enjoyed what I was doing and I
hadn't expected that.•
•1 began to think that maybe I
was the best person for the
permanent position. I was
coming from inside the
department and could contribute
continuity and consistency. I also
felt that I could make a
difference and do some very
positive things for the division.
I finally decided to throw my hat
into the ring."

10 classified (non-teaching) staff
members.
•This stolf bas been fantastic
in the year that I've served as
interim and pennanent athletic
director. The morale is good and
I've seen lots of people step up
and take on new and expanded
responsibilities. The image of our
division across campus is very
strong.•
The 1998-99 athletic season
was a very good one for Orange
Coast College'.s Pirates.
For one thing, the insntution

card sual for lhls acllOn, so a fit has
