FAIRGROUNDS -From sometimes

"Weird Al• Yankovic. the 107th Orange
County Fair Cdme to a smilingly successful
golden close Sunday.
With attendance, paid admission and
revenues surpassing the numbers generat-
ed by last year's Fair, the team that helped
put •t together seemed happy that so many
joined tlUs yeat:'s •rush"-themed event.
"We are pleased on a number of levels,"
said Becky Bailey-Findley, the Fair's gener-
al manager. "We were able to present a
good event "
Bailey-Findley satd complamts and
arrests, which were down to 214 from 260 a
year ago, were one of many bright spots. So
were the positive comments on havmg as
many entertaining options to choose from.
"I trunk from our patrons we received the
most (comment) about the vai:iety of enter-
tainment and the ndes," she said.
Steve Beazley, deputy general manager,
said this year's Fa.tr compares "favorably" to
last yea.r's. Beazely said the addition of a
turnaround parking area was a great suc-
ct?ss.
"It was something that we have known
about for several years," he said. "lt was just
an issue of solVUlg it."
Seazely said another area they worked
on was to provide more shading for patrons.
He said they will continue to sed.Tch for ways
to make the event cooler for daytune visi-
tors.
"Short of putting a dome over the Fdir-
grounds," he said. • .
Although making money 1s not the m~
concern, Bailey-Findley said Fair board
members were pleased with virtually all
aspects of the 17·dd¥ event. \. ..
"We are always looking for more space to
present items and pdrkmg," she s8.ld.
Other areas also showed an mcrease m
revenue. The carruval company, Ray Cam-
mack Shows of Anzona, posted a 5.9°.,
increase to $2.42 million over 1998. And the
82 concession food vendors enjoyed an 8%
mcrease in revenues while sponsorship was
up a healthy 21 % to $1.52 million.

A FABULOUS FAIR
Although the Ordnge County

more fdl!goers made their way
mto the Fd.ligrounds this year
-than m 1998 Pe:ud admission was
up 8% from last yedI to $2.34 '
million, while the C'dnuvdl
brought in $2.42 million in all,
just off the 1997 record of $2.5
million. And the number of
arrests dropped from 260 to 214
this year.
But the numbers alone don't
reflect the fun and thrills the Fair
provided, as always Next year's
Fair is scheduled for July 14-30.
We can't wait.

PROPER PUBLIC RELATIONS
A decad~ ago, CJ.

Residents shot it down.
Now, the company has
returned with a plan lo build a

And they're ~ringing the plans to
residents early on, which should
ensure a project everybOOy can

It.
ln the progressive era, radical, new meth-
ods were adopted by many states to give the
people a louder voice in politics. One of
these new ideas was the initiative. The ini-
tiative gives common people the ability to
put a piece of legislation on a stdtewide vot-
er approval. The mitiahve must receive the
signature of a certain percentage of reyis-
tered voters first, however.

There are people who are very strong
believers in the initiative process, and these
people will sign any initiative because they
believe people have a ngbt to vote on the
issue .... Even il Cox does support this initia-

According to concluding state-

school DARE program seeks to
impact the safety and behavior of
students through the reinforce-

Sgt. Mike McDermott of the

•When y()u think of great quarterbacks at Newport
Harbor High, he truly rates as one of the all-timers.
well in the first half, and I guess
you· could say we won the
second half." Bukich said.
W en Steve Bukich

Bukich's father, Rudy. played illl quarterback for USC and was 1111111 named MVP of the 1953 Rose
Bowl Game when the Trojans
defeated Wisconsin, 7-0. gray line that is Newport Harbor
High football, there was little
anybody had to teach him when
it came to respect, tradition and
appreciation.
Bukich, one of the school's
greatest quarterbacks of all time,
grew up in Chicago dwing a
period when high school football
was king and moved here with
his family before entering his
freshman year at Harbor, when
Ernie Johnson was the head
coach and made quite an
impression on the young Bukich.
•(The Tars) seemed to
attract some of the best
coaches around," Bukich
said. •With Ernie
Johnson (for one year in
1970) Wld Don Lent
(1971-73), from a high
school standpoint, the
staffs they put together
were exceptional.
But Bukich, a valued
205-pounder with a strong arm
and good wheels, was so
unpressed with new UCLA
Coach Dick Venneil that he
selected the Bruins in the
recruiting process over USC and
BYU.
Buloch. who also played
baseball at Newport Harbor,
suffered from back problems
after graduating in 1974 and
didn't play in any summertime
all-star football ga.m~.
· But, as a true
freslunan at UCLA,
Bukich was thrust into
the starting lineup on
the road against
powerful Washington
when quarterback John
Sciarra was injured.
•My first full year of
school in California was
my freshman year at
Newport Harbor, and I
Steve Dukich
It was a day m
Seattle that Bukich
would like to forget,
but a school-record five
interceptions in one
just remember being unpressed
by the strong importance football
had in Southern California at the
time, compared to Chicago,
where it was the ultimate activity
for kids growing up:
Bukich's hard·nosed, Midwest
attitude blended in nicely with a
core of Sailors.who felt the same
way about football. Jeff Kravitz,
Mark Duffy, John Gust, Gavin
Hedrick and George Nonis were
first-team All-Orange Coast area
seniors along with Bukich in the
fall of 1973.
•we had some guys who
could play football, all at one
time," classmate Pat Millican,
who later started on the
defensive line for the University
of Miami, once said.
But the humble Buldch was
the field general of the Sailors'
'73 Sunset League
co-championship, a squad (9-2)
that tied a 31-year-old school
record for victories in a season.
Bukich, who was later a
starting quarterback at UCLA,
was a first-team All-CIP
Southern Section 4-A choice and
first-team All-Orange County
selection (along with his favorite
receiver, junior Vinnie MuJroy).
Santa Ana Valley's Myron White
was the Orange County Back of
the Year in '?3. Valley that ..
season also had a first-team
all-county comerback named
Garry Templeton.
Bukich, who teamed with
Mulroy to form the best
passing-receiving combination m
Harbor's 42-year history at that
point, completed 51of106
passes in the regular season for
1,099 yards and 12 touchdowns,
and ran for eight others,
iilcluding four ruShing scores in
a 31-3, sea.son-opening victOpY
over Corona del Mar.
In the Tu.rs' first playoff game,
they knocked off Siena League
champion South HillJ, 35-20, as
BuJdch canied for 16 yard.I on
nine attempt.I, mduding
touchdOwns jaunts of 33 and 20
yards. Newport Herbot loit in

game makes it ctifficult
to 1gnore. •But the record was
bed (shortly thereafter) by Tom
Ramsey,• Buloch said. "I can't
wait for )um to read that."
Actually, Matt Stevens tied
the record in 1986 against
Oklahoma, and it's a mark that
still stands. At least Bukich can
say he's in the same UCLA
passing record book as Troy
Aikman and Cade McNown.
Bukich, who earned UCLA
football letters in 1974, '76, '77
and '78 (he was injured his
second year and redshirte!i),
enjoyed his Bruin experience
athletically and academically,
ma1oring in urban geography
and economics. One of his UCLA
highlights was playing Arkansas,
the n coached by Lou Holtz, in
the 1978 Fiesta Bowl.
•Holtz was on lbe Tonight
Show' with Johnny Carson the
night before the game, which
was played on Christmas Day,
and he was doing a stand-up
comedy routine which was really;
funny," Bukich said.
Coach Terry Donahue's Bruins
bed Arkansas, 10·10, as Bukich. 1
making his only start of the
season, scored UCLA's lone
touchdown on a 15-yard run
in the fourth qu¥ter.to ti~ it.
•Lou Holtz said after the
game it was like kissing your
sister,• said Suki.ch, who handed
the ball off mostly to running
bock James Owens (121 yards
on 11 carries).
During the Bu.kich era at
Newport Harbor, a supportive
booster club paid for a brand •
new weight room. •Initially,•
Bukich 58.id, •that gave us a Jot
of momentum.
•1 think the tradition at
Newport Harbor High has
always been strong. I just feel
proud to be a part of it." ,
Today, Buk.ich, a member Of
the Daily Pilot SportS Hall of
Fame, celebrating the
millennium, is vice president oi
construction for a company that
builds auilted living fadli.ties.
He lives in Laguna Niguel

Treat this hand IS a play problem.
Cover the East-West cards and decide
how you would play five clubs after
the lead of the four of heaiu.
When this succeeds, • you are
almost home. Ruff another diamond
high. cross to the ace of clubs and,
when the suu breaks even1y, you can
claim 11 Lncks. Discard another
spade on the lood diamond, concede a heart and, smce you can ruff your
remaining heart on the llble. you lose
only one trick in each ma;or.
We do not know whether North
mtended two spades as a psych1c bid
or as a help-swt trial btd. Regardless
of its intent. South should have rebid
